Title: HP 2133 Wireless Connection Shut
Post by: Pita on September 29, 2009, 07:59:01 pm
Our HP 2133 Mini-Note conked-out luckily still under warranty.
The motherboard had to be replaced and now it will not connect wireless.

On first installation of VL-6-STD we had nothing to do, the machine would just
find and connect to whatever wireless router it found. ;D

Now the WICD Mangager says:"No wireless networks found". ???

If I plug-in the cable to the router, connection is established immediately to wired network.

How will I get the wireless connection back?

/sbin/ifconfig says it is connected via eth1 which shows a differect HWaddr from eth0.
I would not know now where it was connected before the MB change.

My guess is that the replacement parts are not identical to the original ones.

Did you re-install after the repair or re-use the same installation?

can you use vlwifi to connect using your wireless?

Uhhh...this may seem to be a smart a$$ statement but if it has an on/off switch for the wifi, is it turned on. Been there and done that before.

If the wireless card-or-whatever-it-is didn't get plugged in all the way, it may be found but not work. Been there and done that before.  ;)

Thanks all!

I will just reinstall and hope for the best. My guess too is that the new MoBo
is not the same as the old one and hopefully better meaning lasting longer than 9 months.

I made a new install of VL-6.0-STD and the problem remains, no wireless
conncetion can be made.

If I run VLWiFi I get: "Could not obtain an address for wireless eth0."

I run KNOPPIX and it tells me that it cannot find a wireless card.

I can now only make a connection with the cable to the lancard via eth1.

Should there be a wireless card as well and was that possibly not included
or activated when the new MoBo was installed. Could somebody enlighten
me on that please.

Ifconfig shows a different HWaddress both for eth0 and eth1.

Thanks

If I run VLWiFi I get: "Could not obtain an address for wireless eth0."

This usually means that the hardware is recognized but it can't establish a connection.

In a terminal, as root, try:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig eth0 up
iwlist eth0 scan

Does that show any results?

post the output of ifconfig -a, lspci and lsmod....

Doing ifconfig eth0 up, nothing happens.

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 start shows the HWaddress for a while then stops.

I attach the files Ifconfig, Iwlist, Lspci and lsmod having the output of
those commands.

Is this the right way or should I fully list it here?

Do VL auto-detect your wireless before you change the motherboard?
Did you try using ndiswrapper?

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=650729

PS: Did you try modprobe b43?

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

Yes we had no problem at all.

Only now after you mentioned it

Yes now.

Nothing changed aftger rebooting.

Now this morning I brought the unit to the shop where we bought it and believe
it or not WICD picked up the wirless router there just like before at home.
So apparently nothing basically wrong with the system.

Then my neighbour came over with his laptop on Windows and he connected
immediately to our router Linksys WRT54G2 V1. So nothing wrong with the router.

In WICD manager I then made an ad-hoc connection for linksys and the ip address
of eth0. That made then as if it is connected showing eth0 in gkrellm and in
ifconfig like connected. Yet that was just for show, there was no connection.
Then I gave "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 start" which killed this pseudo connection.

Is there a driver missing? And that KNOPPIX could not connect speaks a lot
since this distro is usually quite smart.

Do your wireless using any security setting? If yes, try disable it and connect again using WICD or vlwifi....

No security settings in my place. At the PC shop there was one, and after entering
the password connection was established.

Can you double confirm that your laptop's wireless is working fine when connect to other access point?

It sound so strange that only your laptop cannot connect to your wireless router while other can and some more it can connect to other wireless AP.

Strange indeed. I can double check that again only tomorrow.

At times truth is stranger than fiction.

Can you repost your lsmod? I notice your wired NIC is using tg3 as it module but I am not sure what module for your wireless NIC. It is either b43, bcm43xx or ndiswrapper.......

According to your posted files, ifconfig shows eth0 up and running, and iwlist shows a "linksys" router. You should be able to connect with these commands:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig eth0 up
iwconfig eth0 essid linksys
iwconfig eth0 mode managed
dhcpcd eth0

:D :D  :D it is up and running and survived a reboot.

I guess it must have been the command "iwconfig eth0 essid linksys" since I
have tried "ifconfig eth0 up" and "dhcpcd eth0" several times with no effect.
"iwconfig eth0 mode managed" gave an error "Invalid argument".

I went back to the PC Shop and can confirm that there I had a wireless Internet connection.

Thank you all so much!

Just got a message from the owner of the machine, my good woman, she says,
thank you very much, as well.

Rejoicing was a bit too early.

It turns out now that apparently the problem is that connection can
only be established when the HP 2133 is very near the router.  If I connect
that way and move away the green bar at the WICD applet turns yellow
and it says connected to linksys at 20% and there is no more data flow.

Before the MoBo change the HP 2133 could be used all over the house.

The fact that I got a connection at the PC shop must be that the router there
is near by.

My neighbour with his laptop has no problem with my router everywhere
around the house like with the HP 2133 before.

When I got finally the connection yesterday I was in front of my PC where the
router is as well and followed the instructions given right there on the HP 2133.
If I would have been sitting farer away I would still report: Can't Connect.

So we can make a connection, however, only close to the router. ???

Could it be something wrong with the hardware itself? I have a suggestion, how about you reinstall your laptop with windows and see does the same problem happen? :P

That what I suspect now, it to be a hardware problem.  I have no Windows far and wide, however, I will try KNOPPIX near the router.
5 m away like VL it will not pick-up the signals. At the moment I am finalizing
the install on the HP 2133.

Could it be a channel conflict with a nearby neighbor? Try setting the router to a different channel and see if that resolves the problem.  This actually happened at my parents house when they got a new router. It had me confounded for a couple hours. As soon as I changed channels on the router the problem resolved.

My neighbour (only one) is quite far and I could not pick-up their router before.

Tried KNOPPIX, held it close to the router, could not detect IP address.

I went into a restaurant where a lot of people use their laptops, HP 2133 had no
connection. From there I went to the PC Shop upstairs and got a connection. Next time
I will try different locations at the PC shop and after that might give the unit
back for further repair. ???

I use the wl wireless driver on my 2133 (posting from it via wireless now), not the b43.....

The unit is back with HP for repair after it came back from the repair with a
defective wifi detection, another 2 to 3 weeks waiting. I pity the owner of the
machine already. It does not speak too well of HP here.

Does that mean there is something wrong with the wifi card?

That is all one can guess and as well the idea of the technician at the Computer Shop.

Believe it or not. After 5 weeks we finally got the HP2133 Mini back with the
wireless card repaired and working. Before that it took 3 weeks to have the motherboard
changed after the unit just blackened-out and by doing so HP must have damaged the wireless card and
returned the unit still broken.

Within 8 months the unit was 2 months under repair. Does not speak too well
for this company at least here.
