Title: Networking printer RESOLVED
Post by: StrayBit on October 23, 2009, 06:49:57 am
Hopefully this is an easy question.  I have an HP LJ5 installed with CUPS on VL6 Std and it is working well.  Also, I can read and write files to and from VL from Win98.  I attempted to install the LJ5 on Win98.  The printer was found but then it asked me for a password.  I tried both blank and the only password
I use on VL to no avail.  No passwords are set in Samba.

What am I missing?

No passwords are set in Samba.

That may be your problem. Add a samba user with a password (smbpasswd -a) and see if it helps.

su
smbpasswd -L -a (the L was required)
SMB password:
(repeated)
root has been added

retried from Win: "The password is incorrect. Try again."

You need to add users other than root.
See smbpasswd --help for info on how to add a new user

then try smbclient -L localhost
it should ask you for a username or pass

if it works, it should list your shares, otherwise, well... it'll reject it.

Added both users to smbpasswd.  Then for good measure went to cups and added root bruce cleo pcguest guest as allowed users.  Now the password works from Win98  ;D
