Title: Problem installing graphic card driver. Help needed
Post by: slevincross on February 28, 2010, 11:01:01 am
Hello everyone, I am new here and I would very much appreciate it if you could help me out with my graphics card.

So, I have got an integrated graphics card in my motherboard which is a Asus M4a785t-m. The problem is that the drivers
provided for linux at asus.com can not be installed at my Vector, or at least I do not know how to do it. So my question is:
How can I install my graphics card without the Asus drivers? I know it is possible, since it worked fine with some sort of
OpenSource drivers when I used Ubuntu at the same machine.

How do I configure HardWare without having the X-window activated?

I hate to be the one with millons of newbie questions, but I am very grateful for the help I get.
Thank you!

//Jasper

It looks like that motherboard uses an ATI Radeon HD 4200. The open source driver included with VL should work fine, but won't give you 3D acceleration. You can download the drivers from http://www.amd.com. Installation instructions can be found here: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_cat102-inst.pdf

Boot into linux-tui (text mode). Once you get into the text mode screen, as root run vasm. XWindow is where you set up your video. You can set up other hardware at Hardware in vasm.

If you're having problems getting your motherboard's video chip working, you can usually run the GUI if you select the vesa driver. You can change to the proper driver (apparently ATI) when you find out if it works as it should.
