Title: No Sound for USER in HP2133
Post by: Pita on March 17, 2010, 11:57:08 pm
HP2133, VL-6-STD, XFCE4

When I add a new user I am unable to get sound. There is sound for root.

In user, command alsamixer says: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: no such file or directory.

Settings in Xfce Setting Manager Sound are empty. On Device it will not show
the sound card as it does in root as #0 HDA VIA VT82xx.

Doing sudo alsaconf in user ends with ALSA is ready to use.... and then using
alsamixer I get above error.

xfce4-mixer is empty. View-Manage shows Device: /dev/sound/mixer whereas in
root Device: default

as user alsactl restore says: No soundcards found...

sudo aplay file.wav plays file, aplay file.wav gives error.

What went wrong?

What went wrong is the habit of mine stemming from the old linux days
to add users as root from the console. This is what I did with 2 users and both
have then no sound. Adding a user with vasm the user has sound.

Now I have to solve how to get sound to a user added from the console.

Any suggestions?

Edit:
I just checked it in my PC Desktop adding a user via console that user has
sound.

You should make sure the users are added to all relevant groups in /etc/group.  It's possible that they are not added to all the necessary groups.

Thanks!
Yes there was none added at all. Replaced all the test user which was added with vasm
with real user and bang there was the sound et all.

Now again in my PC desktop with VL-6-Light adding a user from the console with
"adduser" command that user cannot be found in /etc/group yet it has sound.
I just tried it.

Is there something not right in VL-6.0-STD in this regard?

That's a good question. I _thought_ that users needed to be added to appropriate groups to have respective permissions (audio, video, login, etc), however I've mostly worked with STD.  Perhaps Light takes a different approach. Nightflier would be the one to answer this question (I think).
