Title: No Mouse, No Keyboard: Dell Vostro 1510
Post by: gacl on July 21, 2010, 07:22:30 am
Hi,

I installed VectorLinux 6 on a Dell Vostro 1510 and everything worked fine except for the video driver. I tried to change it and now everytime that I try to boot my computer I have no keyboard and no mouse. Help, please.

Gus

Edit: Oh, no! Same issues with VectorLinux Light Live. Wha. . . ?!

When I try "linux single" and "linux emergency" at "boot:" (LiLo) I get "No such image. [Tab] shows a list."

linux root=<your root device> ro 2

Neither "linux root=/dev/hda1 ro 2" or "linux root=/dev/sda1 ro 2" do anything. There's only one partition in the drive.

Edit: This is very strange. The installer also has a non-responsive keyboard, i.e. the "SELECT DEFAULT MONITOR RESOLUTION" screen.

are you using lilo as the boot manager?

You can also use a VL install CD to boot it using the commands I gave you

Yes, I don't mess with the bootloader settings during installation.

Now, "linux root=/dev/sda1 ro 2" boots but it hangs at "Vector Login: Setting up basic network . . ."

OK, this is freaky: the VL 6 installation, the VL 6 installation drive, VL 6 Light Live, VL 5.9 Live. . . no luck; no keyboard, no mouse. I put in the Ubuntu 10.04 disc and they work. And, I reboot and the VL 6 installation works. . . why?

same issue as stated previously.  just came across VL and thought I'd give it a try.  sounded like what i was looking for.

pc-pentium D 3.4 dual
currently running XP
no problem with Kubuntu/Mint

tried VL 6.0 STD Gold & KDE Classic.

no keyboard after the install loading screen.

any suggestions would be helpful.

That is very strange.

If the input devices are USB, I would try some PS/2 devices, or vice versa.. that's all I can think of right now.

If you have a USB mouse, try plugging that in when it goes unresponsive and see if anything happens.

Also, when this happens, look at the keyboard indicator LEDs. Can you turn on and off the Caps Lock indicator?

Finally, touch the power button and see if the computer shuts down in an orderly fashion.

Well, the problem is back for me. I've rebooted 5 times, and nothing, no mouse, no keyboard. The only key that works is the power key.

I have no mice. And it does power off properly.

I missed the beginning of this thing, but how was this installed? Gui or text installer? Reason I ask is because if the mouse and kbd worked in the gui installer, then we may look into what modules are loaded in the installer environment

I've loaded VL 6 standard hundreds of times on many different machines, regular and usb.  Only time I had this problem was when the mouse or keyboard was bad or when I plugged them in to the wrong slots.

Right now neither the installed Vector nor the installation flash drive have responsive keyboards (or touchpad).

LiLo responds normally.

With the installation disc not even the power button works, I have to pull out the battery.

Edit 1: A similar problem on Mint: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=34382 But they use GrUB.

Edit 2:
The Ubuntu live flash drive works fine.

Edit 3: OK, now it works all of a sudden after trying the installation drive again. This is very random and annoying.

Quite strange. Yesterday I rebooted twice to see if I could get a response from the keyboard or touchpad with no results, but when I connected the power cord it worked. . .

very strange indeed, but if I've learned one thing from all my trial-and-error tests is that there must be something causing it.
In the case of laptops, I know my old D630 has a function+[key] combo to disable stuff like touchpad, and wireless, you may want to check if yours does the same thing..

also, have you tried booting with acpi=off (because you said the power button didn't respond)

As far as I can tell both, the power cable and the ethernet cable have to be plugged in for the computer to allow control of the touchpad and keyboard. And even then it requires a couple of boots.

I don't know if this can be related to the problem but once I log in and unplug the ethernet cable the computer keeps trying to connect to the wired interface endlessly even though my wireless signal is available. And when I click "connect" to my wireless interface it never does. My other computer connects normally.

I found this:

"I had the problem with the keyboard lost. The issue was solved for me by adding “i8042.reset” to kernel commandline."

Could someone please explain?

Don't have VL 6 installed right now, so I can't check the kernel, but a quick "Google" shows that this may be a bug in the earlier kernels. Supposedly this is fixed after 2.6.27?

What would the solution be?

When LILO menu appears, press the Tab key. This will allow you to edit the boot command. Add a space and then i8042.reset (and/or the other options).

I see. How can I make these changes permanent?

Modify lilo.conf in your /etc directory as root. Once the changes have been made, run lilo -v to make the changes permanent.

Where does the "i8042.reset" line go? In "append"?
