Title: VectorLinux SOHO 6.0 Final has landed !!
Post by: vector on August 11, 2010, 12:01:51 am
The VectorLinux development crew is proud to announce the final release of VL-6.0-SOHO. The SOHO project is VectorLinux for the small office or home office (thus SOHO) as such is larger than our other releases. The challenge is to keep SOHO as fast and as stable as the rest of the Vector family and we think we have met that challenge!

The SOHO final release is based on the KDE-4.4.2 plasma desktop with many graphical and system enhancements. We have included all the productivity software one would need like Digikam, the gimp-2.6.10, k3b-2.0, scribus, OpenOffice and Inkscape to name a few. The kernel is version 2.6.31.11 which adds new wireless network possibilities along with greater speed and stability. The GUI installer first introduced in the VL standard 6.0 release has seen futher refinements and is the default installer. Support has been added for a wider range of graphic chipsets and both lilo and grub2 bootloaders are available. Importing user accounts from previous installs is now possible provided a seperate home partition is used. The latest versions of Firefox, Opera and SeaMonkey browsers are also included. X.org has been upgraded to version 7.4 to expand the useable hardware base for SOHO.

We have included out of the box multimedia support so that all of the popular formats play without the need for searching for third party downloads to play a certain format. We also have the latest amarok 2.3.1 for your music appreciation.

Please note that our DELUXE SOHO release will be available for purchase in about 10 days to allow for any last minute bug fixes that may show from our public release. The DELUXE version will be available as a high speed download or as a packaged two CD set via snail mail. You can preorder the packaged set from the order links on the website. We will announce the DELUXE release on our forum and website when ready so stay tuned.

Cheers!!
the VectorLinux team

I don't know whether this is the place to post a problem with 6.0 Soho, but here goes. I just installed 6.0 Soho, including CD2. I can't boot: The process goes as far as the last icon after signin (is that the desktop?) and stops. I have installed twice, tried to start x as both user and root. I have to turn off the computer and turn on again.
I have a PentiumIV machine with an Intel graphics card, 512MB RAM. I have Vector 6.0KDE on another partition, and it works perfectly.

If you're getting that far, it doesnn't seem likely to be a system / driver issue. Is your /home partiton a freshly formatted partition or is it a used one?

I would suspect one of our custom settings is stopping you in your tracks. I would try deleting .local .config and .kde from your home folder and try again. This will give you a default factory kde install but hopefully you get to the desktop. The easiest way to do this is mount your soho partition from a partition that works then delete those folders then try booting logging in again.

Cheers,
Vec

how do i install the apps from the 2nd cd? i went to a terminal and as root typed ./myinstall.sh or whatever it was, it showed that it installed 66 extra packages but they don't show up as installed.

So what does "Deluxe" have that the 2 iso set doesn't have? Does it come with a blonde or something? If so, I am SO there!  ;D

All I can say is that the Deluxe has more.
Perhaps a blonde will deliver yours, who knows  ;D

I don't know if Deluxe has more. I buy it because I like to support VectorLinux. I do pay for any VL distro that has a paid version either by buying it or making an equivalent donation.

Congrats to the Vector team on the latest SOHO release. I've been away from Vector for awhile but decided to give this latest release a spin.
All I can say is that after a couple of days I am quite impressed...nice work indeed.

Sweet! I was hoping a new release would be out by now. My 5.9.1 SOHO feels long in the tooth. I have ArchBang and a few other distros on my list, but I can't seem to get away from VL SOHO as my foundation. :)

Any recommended way of dumping the two isos onto a thumbdrive? I'm pulling down the isos now. Will give the dd route a go right off.

Hello! to all vectorians.
I like linux in general and I am a distro hopper in search of user friendly distro and to learn things specific to a particular distro.  Finally I got settled with 4 OS Fedora, Debian and recently VECTORLINUX 6 SOHO installed in my machine which is AMD Athlon X2 with ASUS M2NPV MOTHER BOARD though it is x_64 compatible and works fine I prefer x86 versions.

Though I used VL some two year back and found it as one of the user friendly and newbie distro.  Software download was lot of slower compared with the speed with which I downloaded iso file of VL as well as other software download after installation. In addition to this, this VL vs 6 SOHO edition looks more polised in its appearance, stablity and the speed and make me to chose it as a prefered distro over Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu.
I congradulate the team behind edition and making user happy.

Well,..
what do you know!  I never really liked KDE,...but here I am really liking VL 6 SOHO.  And would you believe that I have it on my older P3 (1Ghz--512mb ram--160G hd).....and the speed actually isn't bad at all.  Sweet.  Much thanks to all who helped on this lovely edition  (it's being very appreciated).

Hello, vectorians

After some years using Vector Linux, I spent a short season with other distros ... behold, now I return and am very happy to install Vector Linux SOHO and verify that everything is very beautiful, efficient, and working perfectly on my old machine! Congratulations to all developers and users that make this distro the best among all I've ever experienced.

Thank you for this excellent work

Sandra  ;)
