Title: Firefox Installation w/o gslapt
Post by: Pita on November 13, 2010, 08:58:05 pm
For those who want to upgrade firefox while the repos are down I suggest
the following:

Download Firefox

Open the downloaded file as root/sudo with mc

Copy file firefox to /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.12

Change symlink @firefox to point to firefox-3.6.12

Move to /usr/bin

Edit file firefox and change the versions for firefox to read 3.6.12. There are 3
places to change.

Save the file.

Close mc and start firefox.

Pita,

Could you add some detail to this for those who use VL 6 standard?

I think I followed your directions and ended up with a firefox-3.6.12.tar in /home/johwhi/src.  Is that the file I copy to /usr/lib/firefox, tar and all?

No that is not the file. I will get back on it tomorrow since now fine dinner is waiting
with good red wine of which I took already pre-tasting sips. :D

Cheers

An easier way: Download the VL package from here:
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-6.0/testing/net/firefox-3.6.12-i586-1vl60.tlz

Install with "installpkg".

nightflier,

Sounds like we should visit Pita.  I love red wine.

Could you doublecheck the url.  I get

Perhaps it has been moved.

Thx

As you were.  I found it in the ibiblio testing repository (gslapt->edit->preferences->sources). I installed firefox 3.6.12 from there, with gslapt, and it seems to work fine.

FWIW, I installed 3.6.12 from testing shortly after it was announced. No problems at all. Since, my web browser can't find it in the repo. Looks like at least one mirror has it, some don't. Thanks for the tip on Ibiblio, sledgehammer.

Thanks for the link location, sledgehammer. I downloaded it with wget and installed with installpkg. (I probably should have used upgradepkg.) I haven't done extensive testing but the sites I visited did work.

So I'm guessing you don't suggest using the "Check for Updates" and download via the "Help" sub-menu? That's what I did a few weeks ago because Firefox kept bugging me to upgrade because of a security issue. I've had no problems.

Even so the problem was solved an easier way I still will point out my way.

The file I downloaded was firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2. Now in mc I put the pointer over
the file and press Enter. After a few seconds the file opens and it shows
a firefox directory. This directory has to copied (F5) to /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.12.
Then proceed as outlined in first post.

The wine and dinner cooked by my good woman was sooo good. Sledgehammer
you are welcome anytime I have ususally a good selection of wines laying
around.

using the "Check for Updates" and download via the "Help" sub-menu
I have done that in the past and it caused me to lose my spell checker. Installing the VL package fixed it.

pita: I raise my glass (of stout beer) to you. Enjoy life while you can.  :D

I too had troubles installing firefox from the firefox help menu.  However, seamonkey seems to install OK that way on my system. But in all instances, I think using the VL repositories is preferable, if the package is there.
