Title: Anyone tried the new "miracle" performance hack?
Post by: nightflier on November 19, 2010, 04:09:26 pm
I've been reading about the kernel patch that is supposed to improve performance of a Linux desktop:
http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Galbraith-Linux-kernel-scheduling-patch/?kc=rss

Then there is this other one:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/alternative-to-200-lines-kernel-patch.html

I tried the alternative approach, but the system refuses to create the path specified. Anyone else tried this?

There is discussion of it in the Puppy forums, in the programming section.
Cheers

I was trying out the alternative, but it did not work because the kernel on SOHO 6 is not built with support for cgroups. I intend to build a kernel with that in for testing. I'll probably also take the opportunity to build a newer kernel and tweak the build config at the same time, but that will have to wait till I get some free time.

Finally got around to building that 2.6.36.1 kernel with cgroups. Tried the hack alternative and it seems to work, but I can't really say if things are faster or not, need some real testing for that. BTW, I had to use the ubuntu way to get it done, couldn't create that directory within /sys/fs for some reason.

Perhaps this performance boost (once it gets worked out) could be included in the VL7 release?

Are these anything like BFS scheduler or filesystem from CK Kolivas?
BFS coupled with a tweaked ext4 makes for a pretty snappy desktop system.
