Title: VectorLinux Core 7 Alpha4 is up and ready to test
Post by: vector on December 07, 2010, 11:54:50 pm
Hi everyone,
Sorry to do this to you but I need to try out one more alpha before we start the beta stage. We had multiple problems with the 3.6 release mostly due to an upgrade to the installers  core system to accomodate the latest kernel releases. Hopefully the install will go without problems this time and I added a few updated packages like xscreensaver, grip to rip cd's/dvd's, and a few other core programs. Wicd, the network manager should work correctly now as well as the keytboard setting problems. I added a few new twists to the overall theme of things, interested to hear any reactions...............:). I know I have thrown a lot of releases at you lately but I would like the final stages to be pretty damn perfect so the betas rc's should be quick and painless. Thank you very much for taking the time to test............looking forward to your results..comments

Cheers,
Vec

Is this the same as the one I tried yesterday? The md5sum isn't found, so I've not been able to check the iso I've already downloaded.....

Apart from the problem with the keyboard layout (not tried your fix yet), everything else seems to be working quite well.

Paul.

The text-based installer still can't find the CD drive in either PC I tried out, but the GUI installer can. GParted now correctly makes the partitions and the installer can use them, a problem for me in 3.51. I don't get dumped into xterm any more and grub now works for me, previously I had to use lilo. So, apart from not finding the CD it's looking good.
Cheers

Initial test: Booted from CD. Installer found both CD and ISO on drive. Installed from CD to /dev/sda2.

Issue 1: "unable to probe for other operating systems..." (I have VL6 installed on /dev/sda1 using XFS).
Accepted the failsafe grub install. "Error: Failsafe ;31mlibhardware (EIDE) directory /proc/ide iesistente ! [37m/dev/sda".
Reboot showed old LILO in place, but.. booted VL6, ran vliloconf. Did not find VL7. Mounted sda2 and made symlink vmlinuz in "boot", pointing to kernel. After that vliloconf did find it and added to menu.
Upon reboot I got just a string of "9A's".
Booted VL7 from CD, ran LILO install and now it all works fine.

Issue 2: Installer failed just after filling out information on regular user. After reboot no user created. Rest of config completed. Added user manually and now system is running okay.

Funny: PNG images open with Xine. I never knew it would do that.

´╗┐VectorLinux Core 7.0 Alpha 4 is worth the extra time!  :) :)
Vec no apologies necessary. You need to be proud of this release.
From what I can see and as far as satisfying my needs, Vec and others involved have hit all the marks. Thank you all! What worked before is working now and I can see you all have worked hard to improve what needed improving. This new full-featured desktop really looks great. The desktop is certainly stylish and people coming from Windows or Apple will feel very comfortable with it. It is easy to see that Alpha-4 was carefully worked-out. It displays the kind of polish that really makes it shine. Among other out of the box treats the resolution was just right for my video card, flash worked and I was able to watch a DVD. I still remember when Nvidia drivers required me to kill X Windows and run a console script. Firefox was very, very sluggish. After running the updates and performing my usual tweaks Firefox it is still slow, but acceptable. I have used Vector pretty regularly for many years. Despite the occasional annoyance Vector has been solid and improves with each release. The best compliment I can give this release is that I'm running it now and will be using it every day. It now rests on the only partition to the hard drive of my main desktop. I am sure after trying it many others will do the same. You have once again outdone yourselves and in my mind, hold the title as one of the best new user distributions available. For the past few months I have routinely checked the forum and downloaded each release and tested it. I was worried that Vector had reached a pinnacle and would not be as active as in the past. I was wrong. With the release of Alpha-4 it is plain to see Vector is still strong and getting better, greater and faster than all of the previous versions. It's both difficult and time consuming to improve upon something that is already excellent. Thank you again for all your successful efforts and my early Christmas present. ;D No one should be disappointed with the end result.

Downloaded and installed proprietary nvidia driver for my GF 240 video card. Noticable speed increase. :)

Cairo dock: I click the icon for Graphics and try the ones in the pop-up. Inkscape, Gimp and F-spot, they all bounce but nothing happens.

Display: Fonts are fuzzy, not as sharp as in VL6 KDE3.

Couple notes on alpha 4.
Will not work on my on laptop with Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01), graphics.  Works on my other machines, but on on this one right after the "hold on tight testing X bit, it just goes to a black screen.

I've also noticed on any qt app that I install the text that appears on roll-overs (ie, mouse rolls over an item that generates some pop up text), is nearly invisible as text is a very light yellow on a white background.

also I get the following error when trying to run dvdstyler, which I had running just fine on the previous verison.

Code: [Select]
Fatal Error: Mismatch between the program and library build versions detected.
The library used 2.8 (no debug,ANSI,compiler with C++ ABI 1002,wx containers,compatible with 2.6),
and wxNet used 2.8 (no debug,Unicode,compiler with C++ ABI 1002,wx containers,compatible with 2.6).
Aborted
even after re-building the wxGTK dependency on the new alpha, I still get the same error.

See if this helps. Run qtconfig and on the first screen, under GUI Style select Desktop Settings (Default). By default, qtconfig seems to come up with GTK+ . Maybe this should be changed, devs?

I had the same problem with Scribus 1.3.9 and couldn't read the tooltips until I changed qtconfig to Desktop Settings. That fixed it right away. I hope it does for you, too.

I'm writing this from Opera in VL7 alpha4. Installation went smoothly. I had no problem creating a user during installation.

I can't get LILO to work. I want to install on a floppy disk but when I run LILO in VASM, I get this message:
Cannot find kernel (vmlinuz). Aborting LILO install.

I'm booting with the installation CD. I see a vmlinuz-2.6.35.7 file in /boot but no symlinks as there are in /boot of my VL7 a3.5.1 partition. I may try to copy a couple of files from that partition to VL7 a4 but am a little scared to mess with it.

My glxgears scores are worse than they've been on any VectorLinux I've ever used. I have a Radeon 9200 card with 128 megs. I use the xorg radeon driver; ATI doesn't have an updated driver for this old card. I'll compare xorg with what's on my VL7 a3.5.1 partition and see if I can spot some differences.

I've installed a bunch of stuff (OpenOffice, SoftMaker Office, Tuxcards, among others) which seems to be working, though I haven't done much beyond starting them.

I'm seeing a GDM error every time the alpha is booted. As below:

Code: [Select]

Doesn't seem to be doing any great harm, but it is consistent....

Looks better this time than the last alpha, uk keyboard up and running, no issues with not being able to start X.  etc.

However some issues with downloading aps, for example

osmo: Depends: libgtkhtml >= 2.11.1-i586-1vl70 is an error message in Gslapt - this is on a clean install of alpha 4

After downloading and installing osmo I get the following error when run from a console
lyn:$ osmo
osmo: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkhtml-2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Frozen bubble gives the error in gslap of frozen-bubble: Depends: perl-gettext >= 1.05

But runs fine from the menu.

Inkscape and F-spot still show up in the dock under graphics when they are not there.

One small thing, the very nice mushroom wallpaper, isn't that copyright digitalblasphemy?  If is now released great, I rather like it.

BTW what has happened to VASMCC?

No gslapt way of installing NVidia graphics drivers as far as I can see...

Running it now on a my Optiplex GX270 (2.8 Pentium 4). I have to boot from the CD (because I'm using an older version of Grub that can't work with 256 "something or others" in ext3 -- but that was expected). I got a kernel panic on the first boot, but afterward everything went fine and the error hasn't returned. [I'm sorry I didn't write it down.] Everything seems to be slick and fast on this machine. Cairo is kind of "iffy" at this point. The Graphics button brings up Inkscape, F-Spot and Gimp, but now doesn't open any of these. (At first it opened Gimp.) Firefox works fine from Cairo, as does the Terminal, Galculator, Pidgin, Show Desktop, Exaile and the volume setting -- though I had to go to the top panel to shut off "mute" on the sound. The weather applet is not working yet, but I chalk that up to my stupidity. I'm also having trouble getting the home folder to work. It comes up with "Open this folder" but it never opens.  Also, I often have double images when I "zoom" on the button in Cairo. So, at least on my computer, Cairo still seems "not quite there."

Upgrade was quick and easy, now using Firefox 3.6.13. I like the cursor themes better than the other alpha I tried (Alpha 2, I think). I kind of like the background and login screen. Hulu ran well, even without proprietary nVidia drivers (unless they're now built in). [No, Hulu runs okay until I try full screen, so that's right for the "nv" driver as opposed to the proprietary nVidia driver.] So far sound has been good, video has been good. Pretty impressive for an alpha release. I'll have more comments after I've done some more testing. I'll probably have a computer available specifically for testing Vector Linux 7 soon. I like the fact that so much is looks and acts the same as Vector 6 -- even though it's a bit prettier. Once it's released and I move over to 7, I'll probably jettison Cairo, but I plan to keep and use it while testing. It looks like another great Vector release is coming up.

I figured out the "multiple images" in Cairo. Each time I logged out and back in, it appears that Cairo loaded another instance -- or maybe something else caused it. Four of them were open at once.

Thanks to everyone for your hard work.

I like the theme (light blue / gray), the simple and clean icon theme in Firefox, the new sound volume icon (I like the way it gets rid of the vertical bar) -- a lot of work has gone into making Vector Linux 7 look great. (Sorry to ramble here -- I just didn't want my first impression to seem negative.) I've tried all the music playing applications, everyone is working fine. Except for the few Cairo issues, I can't find much to report at all. I'm now looking forward to 7, and I'm not one who is always big on change. Again, great work. Thanks.

That's odd. I've seen no slow down at all compared to VL 6. Do you make network.dns.disableIPv6 true? I always do that and it gets rid of the hitches in Firefox. (I realize that, sooner or later, I won't be able to do that, but it works well now.)

I tried installing from hard drive using vinatall-iso script I got from the alpha4 iso file, but it wasn't able to find the iso image.
Then I burned the image to 2 different CD-RW's and couldn't even get through the first screen.
It said that it can't read sector blahblah, so I assumed the CD-RW was busted, but then I tried another one and I got the installer saying that there was no UI specified and it kicks me out to the "boot:" prompt. I burned both CD-RW's with K3b, although it shouldn't be a problem since it worked just fine before.

Edit:

I did do a md5sum check and it came out ok.

Lynn could you check that out........the place I  got the wallpaper from said nothing about copyright not did it have any watermarks that I  could see. I do remember it from digitalblashemy but since it has appeared on other sites perhaps it has been released.
Also, please adjust your slapt-get sources to use vl7 only as the vl6 repo will cause lots of problems. I will fix that next release. All you packagers out there if you have your favorites please start building agains't the vl7 release so we have a decent repo by final release time as I think its stable now and there won't be any major upgrades in key libraries now in the final.

Cheers,
Vec

I wanted to mention that Scribus 1.3.9 is now out. I compiled it for my VL7 installation but did not create a VL package. It compiled very easily, needed dependenciies were already there, and it is working well. I hope the next VL7 release will include Scribus 1.3.9.

That one is a bit strange. For some reason, the necessary extra files for libgtkhtlm weren't generated., so it probably wasn't found in the repo.

You could try it again - I've just rerun the scripts and it seems to have processed correctly this time round.

Osmo installed just fine...

I found the digital blasphemy image - its not quite the same so its been altered from the original

http://digitalblasphemy.com/preview.shtml?i=fluorescence

I used only V7 repositories initially, which is when I got the errors, but did enable others to install the icewm mod and that was excellent, now disabled and purged the files etc.  So working just from V7 repository now.

Frozen Bubble still gives me the same error - frozen-bubble: Depends: perl-gettext >= 1.05 when I try to reinstall.  But it runs fine.

Filezilla gives the error - wxGTK: Depends: pixman >= 0.18.2-i586-1vl70 and then gives an error when you try to run it from a terminal - filezilla: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2u_aui-2.8.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Incidentally why is Scribus under multi media rather than office?

I think this is coming on well, some polish to do and we need to test the repository for errors.

Incidentally I don't like the new interface for Cups... not sure what to do with it seems to have an extra step there.

I decided to give it another try and after burning a CD-R from the same downloaded image, installation started without any problems.
Here's my feedback so far:

On the installer:
Out of 3 times I installed Alpha 4, once for whatever reason selecting boot loader screen jumped in front of the actual installation screen. I saw the selecting boot screed for a few seconds, with no options at all and a countdown to begin installation, just like on the installation screen. After that the installation started, and when it was done I got a message saying that there was an error selecting boot loader and I can either say Yes and continue or say No and try to correct the problem. I said No, and it went back to the installation screen with all the buttons disabled, so I can go neither back nor forward. The only option I had was to quit installation and start over.

Other than that, I love the new installer, especially the boot loader screen, since it gives a lot more options than the old text installer(I mean things like selecting which OS's it should include in the menu and the ability to change labels). Also it detected an Ubuntu install I have on one of my partitions, something that the old text installer could never do. The select partitions screen got my attention as well. Now I can set up mount points for all my partitions in the mount directory(like /mnt/sda1 and so) during the install, or even choose a different directory if I wanted to.

There is a little problem with that, though - when I click on selecting other mount point, I am given a small text field to enter where exactly I want to mount something. If instead I want to go back and let's say mount it to /home, when I click on /home I get and empty field. I don't know if it actually selects /home, but just doesn't show it, or if it just doesn't select anything. If I close that window and then open a new one by clicking on the partition name, then the menu is back to normal. Hope that makes any sence ;)

Also there is another small problem - I can't drag scroll bars. If I press on scroll arrows, then the scrolling works fine. If I press on empty space between a scroll bar and a scroll arrow, the bar moves fine, but if I try to drag the bar, nothing happens.

And I couldn't figure out how to move in space invaders :D    Space bar for shooting works fine, but arrow keys don't move the guy.

Another thing, is it possible to add something like Super Mario or Crimson Fields to the installer game list, because the installation takes quite a while and the existing games(except maybe freecell) don't help too much.

Now for the Alpha 4 itself:
It is simply beautiful! I am not usually a big fan of eye candy, but compared with let's say VL5.9 with XFCE(that was the last time I used XFCE), well, there is really no comparison.

As for the bad stuff:
My wireless does not work. I can see the card is recognized with lspci. The right modules seems to be loaded, but wicd can't see my router.
It was a royal pain to get it working in VL6, so I was really hoping to avoid that with VL7. I'll look into it more and see if I can figure it out.

On the first install I forgot to mount my home partition, so when I've done it manually afterward and then rebooted, xfce wouldn't start saying that some file in my home directory was missing. Since it was a fresh install I didn't bother to save the home directory and it was overwritten when I mounted my home partition. This isn't really a problem, more like a word of caution. Also I *think* I could do that in earlier versions without much problem.

Also is there any way to include an option to install closed source nvidia drivers either during install or right after with vasm in the future releases? I think it would've been quite handy, since the desktop is kind of slow with the nv driver.

Another thing, are Suspend and Hibernate buttons in XFCE logout menu supposed to work, or is it still work in progress? Because here it says they are missing scripts or something like that.

Overall, I have a feeling that the final version will be amazingly awesome!
Thank you everyone who got VL7 up to where it stands right now for the amazing job you all did.

EDIT:

While trying to get my wireless card working, I realized that ifplugd is not installed by default(I can see it in the repo, but since I don't have an internet connection it doesn't help much). Is that an oversight or does VL7 use another program instead of ifplugd? I was going of this (https://vector.ecosq.com/ic/HowTos/HowToBook/ChapterWireless) tutorial, and although it's quite dated it helped me to get my wireless going with VL6.

EDIT2:

Another small thing, each time I log in, the mixer values are reset.
Also I have 2 cairo docks on startup.

EDIT3:

While watching video with gmplayer, screensaver came on.

Couple more things I've noticed:
If I have a CD in the drive during boot, 2 identical icons appear on Desktop and in the file manager. If I eject it and then put it in again, then it works as it should and I only get one icon on both desktop and in file manager.

Also my down arrow key and a left control key don't seem to work. I chose a default keyboard type during install, and I don't remember ever having to change anything keyboard related on any other version of vector I've used so far.
By the way, this (http://www.msiwhitebook.com/product/notebook/MS-1651_2_zoom.jpg) is my keyboard.

That happened to me on one of the earlier alphas. I don't remember the solution, but you should find it with a forum search. It may have had something to do with .Xmodmap in your home directory. You could try renaming it, exiting X, restarting X, and seeing what happens. If that doesn't fix it, restore the file you named and hope someone who knows what to do jumps in.

something to do with .Xmodmap in your home directory

In my case, problem was solved by removing both lines in the file, leaving it empty.

Downloaded and installed alpha 4.1. Install was fine, and most things seem to be working pretty well.

One thing that really needs to be changed - the installer is generating a ~/.bash_profile. Contents is as below:

Code: [Select]
# LOCALES ADDITIONS MADE BY THE VL GUI INSTALLER
export LANG=en_US
`setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout gb`
# END OF MODIFICATIONS BY THE VL GUI INSTALLER

While the keyboard layout obviously needs to be set up, 'export LANG=en_US' is both counter productive and annoying - it overides any attempt to set the locale by /etc/profile.d/lang.sh. Setting a keyboard locale correctly and then setting a default language/locale of en_US is pretty silly.

Sound Problem with all flavors including latest 4.1.

If I have my USB webcam plugged-in on booting I have no sound.
Sound card cannot be found.

Booting with webcam not plugged I have sound after adjusting sound
levels in alsamixer and enabling controls in xfce4-mixer.

Giving command 'alsactl store' does store the settings, however, on reboot
apparently 'alsactl restore' is not executed and has to be done from the
console after which there is sound.

Whatever is done with sound above alsaconf refuses to detect the sound card.

--GrannyGeek

In my case, problem was solved by removing both lines in the file, leaving it empty.

I just ended up installing a later alpha version(Alpha 4.6), which fixed the problem. Thanks a bunch nonetheless.

Speaking of which, I was finally able to install VL7 from CD-RW.
Still 2 cairo docks, though.
Also no luck with wireless.

Does anyone have wireless working in VL7?

Yes it was nice to see the .Xmodmap thing finally put to bed with alpha 4.6.
If you watch the cairo dock thing carefully, at first boot there really is only one cairo doc. It's only with each subsequent boot that you start accumulating  cairo dock's.  If you exit the cairo-docs until there is only one and turn off "Automatically save session on logout", and also uncheck cairo-dock from "Application Autostart" the problem stops.  I'm guessing cairo-doc get's captured as a saved setting and the autostart creates it's duplicate.  If you close with two cairo-docs running the next boot makes a third then forth.
I've had good luck with wireless so far.  I use zd1211rw wireless in two machines.  A Broadcom bcm4318 in the other.  All work fine.

Hm, I think I had 2 docks to start with, but now that you mention it I am not really sure anymore. I close one but the next boot I have 2 again. I'll try your fix the next time I reboot.
EDIT: 2 reboots later - problem solved. Thanks a bunch to stretchedthin.

Another thing, the kernel sources are gone this time, which prevents me from installing NVidia drivers. Downloading source right now ;)
EDIT: Well that sure wasn't fun - now it says that it's missing kernel headers and it's most probably because the source isn't configured... I think I need to do a menuconfig or something on it... But first I need to learn what kernel headers are and how to cook them :D

Another thing I remembered, during installation space invaders and freecel wouldn't start. Maybe it has something to do with me using a CD-RW(for some mysterious reason previous alphas hated the poor fella).

As for wireless, stretchedthin, could you please explain how you went about setting it up? I am lost since ifplugd is missing. Does VL7 use a different way of getting interfaces working?(I hardly have a clue of what I am talking about here. I am going off this (https://vector.ecosq.com/ic/HowTos/HowToBook/ChapterWireless) tutorial, which helped me get wireless going in VL6).

I have a fix for what ails you...
Choosing your default sound card with asoundrc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsgOFHCJAUE)

This might interest the developers as well, I can easily see a vasmCC application that takes this a step further and allows the user to preselect what should always be choosen as default.  Also .asoundrc settings can be used much more powerfully than what I've shown here.

I've got it easy.  Both my wireless cards are detected automatically. So I can just use wicd to make the connection.
When you iwconfig as root in the terminal, do you see a wlan0 section in the output?

open the cdrom and you should be able to install the pkg from there.

there is a problem with the fonts that freecell and space invaders uses on the initrd, I will get to that as soon as I can.

wireless should be handled by wicd now.

Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device e002
 Kernel driver in use: rt2860
 Kernel modules: rt2800pci, rt2860sta

The module that got it working in VL6 is rt2860sta(which was a in the staging tree at the time). That same module is also loaded in VL7. In addition to that module rt2800pci is loaded which is said to be causing trouble for some hardware. Therefore as indicated here (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/132350), disabling that module could help, which is exactly what I did, but with no result. Then I disabled rt2860sta, leaving only rt2800pci, but still nothing. So basically both, or separately it's a no go either way.
When I say no result I mean I can't get past this:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted
It seems to me that this isn't a problem with a module(since it worked before and I verified that it doesn't get interference form other modules).

Also I am guessing that ifplug.d isn't necessary after all..

kernel-stripped=src package is on the ISO it is not installing for some reason.
open the cdrom and you should be able to install the pkg from there.
Is it possible that some other packages are not installing too, or is it just the src?

Wicd says that it can't detect any wireless networks.

I don't quite understand what it means for iwconfig to see the interface but for ifconfig not to. I think it's something along the lines that it's there but when I try to turn it on, it breaks.

I think you are missing a piece of firmware needed for that ralink chip. I repackaged our firmware pkg that now includes firmware for ra2860 so hopefully that will get it going. get the packages here and just install on top of the one that came with the last release:

I have the usual printing problem with VL7. I just can't get it to detect my printer
which is a Brother DPC-385C. In cups it does not show under local printers.

This problem was as well with VL6 which I finally "solved" by installing VL-Light
over VL6 since VL-Light does detect my printers. The same holds true for VL6SOHO.

I am now in a jam since I cannot use my office suite applix ware. It does not
open in VL6SOHO where I can print, however, it does open in VL7 where I can't print. ??? ??? ???

My old VL6-STD is on a HD which is deffective and opening it it freezes the system
after a few minutes.

Would much appreciate guidance on how to get my printers working in VL7.

Just to double check. I am now in Live CD VL-Light. Trying to add a printer with cups
it shows my Brother as well as my Epson printer to add amoung others whereas
in VL7* it only shows one SCI (??) and 2 HP printers of which one is a fax as local printers.

To me that means something is amiss in VL6-STD and VL7* for detecting printers
on my PC desktop.

I installed VL6LIGHT on top of VL7*.4.6  and yes, yes my printers started to roar away.

Hallo nightflyer, the creator of the wonderful VL6Light would you know what is is that in VL6LIGHT my printers are
showing and what part I have possibly to copy over to VL7 instead of over-installing all to make that beast print.

I wish I knew. Only modification I remember doing with regard to printing was an edit to /etc/cups/cups.conf to fix a problem with the web interface. You really need to figure out the basic settings required to make your printers work. Maybe you can copy the parameters from the working system. Assuming you use CUPS, go to http://localhost:631 and look around.

Yup, that brought the speakers to life.  :)

Separate issue though: It plays, but when feeding an .m3u file, it plays a blip from each song and only plays the last one through. I don't think this is mplayer itself, because when opening location in Gnome Mplayer it plays all entries. This one is too limited for my taste, no skip nor seek. When trying the default Mplayer and opening URL nothing plays.

Installed VLC 1.1.5 alien slackbuild. Copying and pasting the link into it works as expected, it plays all songs, I can skip and seek.

Which brings up another annoyance; I remember when it was easy to specify/edit helper apps in Firefox. At some point, this disappeared.
I prefer to have most media streams fed to a separate instance of VLC. Opera does it right, it is just a matter of specifying it in preferences.

@ budulay try this...

as root at the terminal enter...
cpan Template
then answer yes to all the questions.

When done try sbbuilder -manual or sbbuilder -help
should work then.

I don't know when sbbuilder got included into the alpha's but it must have just been recently.

A4.12 kernel 2.6.36.3
1st machine tested was xplio with p4 processor and older intel graphics (82852/855gm integrated graphics.)
Alpha 4.12 installed just fine.  vxconf, did not work to set up graphics but using the no xorg option did 'Auto'.
Some nice tweaking guys as previous experiments with the 2.6.36.3 kernel resulted in kernel panics at first boot.

Wicd asks for root password at start-up but then fails to launch.
System froze during one of the screensavers (endless staircase), but seems to be fine for other openGL type screensavers.

2nd machine. HP q6600 quad core, ati hd3650 graphics.
Installation goes fine but then on first reboot system freezes with a fuzzy staticy colorful screen.  This is still in tui mode as the graphics configuration window for vxconf and such has not even come up yet.
Kernel 2.6.36.3 has worked on this machine before in other tests the only problem being that the ati proprietary drivers could not be loaded without error.  This resulted in an inability to handle OpenGL.

So far the best Alpha for my HP desktop (ati graphics), toshiba laptop (nvidia graphics), and acer netbook has been Alpha 4.0.  The best alpha for the xplio with the older intel graphics has been alpha 4.2 (I think) with kernel 2.6.36.2.  I really feel for you guys.  Creating one disk that is going to work for everybody has got to be tough.

A13:
Wicd works now :D
Well, there was something weird to it at first:
When I first tried connecting to my router, wicd froze, saying that it was flushing routes or something like that. And it wouldn't restart after I shut it down.
I tried rebooting, but got stuck with Removing Gateway message. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Del would help. Each time I press it I would get an Issued Kill signal, the system is going to restart message on the Ctrl-Alt-F7 workspace, but nothing happened. Had to do a hard shutdown. After booting up however, wicd picked up my router and I've got internet ;D

Still no Pidgin icon in cairo-dock by default and the OpenGL version of cairo-dock won't work with Nvidia closed source drivers installed.

Correction:
Just rebooted into A13 and after entering my login information I get a black screen and mouse cursor.
I can get back to the login screen with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but when I login again, I get the same thing.
On reboot/shutdown I get Removing Gateway message as before.

Finally got my hands on 4.12 and am just installing to a vm. I should point out that it would not boot and wanted PAE enabled, which I could do in virtualbox, but I don't think the installer kernel should do that. I realize this is probably fixed since there are already 2 more isos out there... ;D

EDIT: a quick issues report ():

- during boot, the VectorLinux graphics moved... :o
- before gdm: error loading theme mushroom (Mushroomlake.jpg)
- after gdm and login in: xsession crashes, error with libstartup-notification-1.so.0
- vasm: no x11 keyboard list trying to select keyboard for X

I tried no xorg.conf at first, then went for vesa in vasm, but still same problems, so I never got to xfce... ::)

After Alpha.4.6 I can't install any longer *.8, *.10, *.12.

After 'Installation complete' it says
'Preparing boot menu....
and then a window pops up saying:

....unexpected error und must abort
[45] File or directory does not exist
MdlMain.?.0

When I then quit the consoles shows a lot of seg faults trying to access
/etc/rc.d/rc.* files.

I had the partition ckecked for bad blocks and none were found.

This is an iso installation. My CDRom is read only and the new R/W
I bought does not find an install disk. I still try to figure that one out.

do all of your partitions mount ok after reboot?

all partitions mount properly including VL7 which shows all the installed
files. du gives 1180649. The partition has 9 Gig.

I've been seeing so many odd problem reports with the point updates to alpha 4 that I decided not to wait for the first beta and to install VL7 4.15 and see how smoothly it went.

Bad news: After the installation completed I could not boot into the new installation with the installation CD. When I type
linux root=/dev/sda7 ro
I don't get booted into my alpha 4.15 installation. Instead, I get the start of the installation with no option to boot into my new alpha 4.15.

On this computer I do not install LILO to the MBR. I use a floppy disk. However, there is no option to install LILO to a floppy disk during installation. I have to run VASM, lilo after I reboot into the installation with the CD. But that won't work with a4.15, so I can't get into the installation at all. I have booted into various VectorLinux installations with the CD for years and I don't recall getting these results in all these years. This is a disaster!

The other odd thing was that when I first was about to go into the GUI installer, I chose 1280x1024 for my resolution (I have an LCD monitor with 1280x1024 and 60 Hz as the defaults). However, the monitor went black and the monitor's message about Not Optimum Resolution (1280x1024, 60 Hz or something like that), was moving across the screen. I had to reboot with the power button and chose 1024x768 for the installer's resolution and didn't have that problem and was able to complete the installation.

Is there any solution to the problem of booting with the CD or am I out of luck until the next release, when I hope it will be fixed?

the only one I know of would be to boot it with a VL6 cd.
Sorry about that, I knew about it but have not got around to fixing it yet.
I'll get right on it.

There seem to be significant changes between the point releases. Alpha 4.10 went ok for me, 4.12 wouldn't give me a desktop even in VESA, 4.15 boots to the desktop perfectly again. Thankfully all the early problems with getting the text installer to run and the partitions made in the GUI installer have been squashed and things are looking good generally. But it must be really hard moving things forward when a change in one place seems to mess things up in another.

Is it only me or does anyone else think that X is the biggest source of problems plaguing Linux distros in general? In fifteen years of installing Windows I have never - never - not got to a workable GUI after the installation completes. If MS can manage this why can't Linux? Well, I'm not a programmer so I don't know the answer and can't offer any help, so perhaps I shouldn't criticise!

New iso is up: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/iso-test/VL7.0-CORE-ALPHA-4.16.iso
This is essentially the same as 4.15, the only change is the ability to boot an installed system from the cdrom.
It still identifies itself as 4.15

I have done my best to keep the deltas small between the last releases so if you have slow connection, I suggest using the deltas located in the  http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/iso-test/ directory.

I think we are pretty close to a Beta release at this point.

Thank you all for the testing you have done.

we are still trying to work this out.
can you boot the installer, close the installer, open a terminal and run "./vinstall-ng.gambas -C"
the installer will reopen in config mode.
from there you need to choose the iso you originally installed from and the / partition you installed to.
then the installer will attempt to reconfigure the system.
if it fails at the same point I will need you too run "chroot /mnt/target" and then "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"
if that finishes without error then run "grub-install /dev/sda" ##Make sure /dev/sda is where you want the grub mbr written##

I managed to boot into my a4.15 installation with the CD for alpha 4. It was sort of a mess because by default it boots to runlevel 4 and I had no keyboard or mouse working in X, so I couldn't run VASM to finish the configuration and had to use the power button to get out. Then I booted from the CD into runlevel 2 and had keyboard support and was able to finish the configuration with VASM. However, when I did startx I got into the desktop but again had no keyboard or mouse. So I got out through the power switch, rebooted into runlevel 2, and set up keyboard and mouse in VASM. This time they worked. I also ran alsaconf again because my soundcard was not detected on my first attempt. This is very unusual, as this system has been very Linux friendly in all the years I've had it. Sound is working now. Keyboard and mouse are USB, if that has anything to do with them not working until I set them up individually in VASM.

I couldn't set up LILO through VASM because it complained there was no vmlinuz file. The same was true in alpha 4. I made a symlink in /boot, reran VASM-LILO, and was able to create a LILO boot floppy.

I'm writing this in Firefox from alpha 4.15.

I'm getting much better glxgears scores in 4.15 than I get in alpha 4.

I'll burn a CD for 4.16 and see if I can boot into my 4.15 installation with it.

I'm really looking forward to beta 1.

The CD I made for a4.16 did work to boot me into my VL7a4.15 partition. I didn't install 4.16, just booted with it.

A successful boot, but...
For some unknown reason, my XFce was totally messed up. No icons were showing. I could not change the background image. I did VASM, skel to restore to defaults, but still no icons and the background was unchangeable.

I didn't know what else to do, so I booted into VL7 a4, which has been working well enough to use it all the time (which I do). I do need Inkscape, however, and hope it will be available for VL7 soon.

If anyone knows how I can fix XFce a4.15, let me know and I'll give it a try. For now, I'm back to a4 and will stick with it until beta1 unless we get an a4.17 (hope not!).

I do not have any jfs partitions.

The partition I want to install to is reiserfs formated.

all partitions mount properly including VL7 which shows all the installed
files. du gives 1180649. The partition has 9 Gig.

On further inspection it showed that in VL7-A4.15 /boot was empty. I then put the
necessary files into it kernel-2.6.33.4 and was able to boot into this version. Then
it became clear that contrary to the installers claim of 100 % installation lots of files
were not installed.
There was beside no kernel, no X, mc, slapt-get, xfce4, etc. etc.

No I did not check the md5ums since I can open the iso file with mc as well
as mount it, therefore I assume it is good.
I can't burn R only CD drive.

I was now able to install all files. Booting into VL7A15  mouse and KB on the console
working well, however, I can't make them work in xfce4.
Did all the configuring with vxconf copied even my VL6 xorg.conf over.
No dice.
On booting it says ....alsa  [OK] yet alsaconf cannot find my sound card.

Don't assume because you can open the iso that it is good!
md5sum the iso and be certain.

Indeed, I have seen mc happily open tar.gz, tar.bz2, etc. files that turned out to have errors when actually extracted.

EDIT: Tried A4.14 and FWIW (I see 4.16 is there!), it doesn't want PAE anymore, but the mouse doesn't work when it gets to the installer. I tried to go on with the keyboard, but you can't select the partition when it gets to that step.

Are the discussions on the iso problems going on on IRC? Because I don't see them here nor on the devel list, nor announcements for a lot of the isos either.

Only usb mice will work in 4.14, 4.15 fixes that.
4.16 is just 1 file different than 4.15, the delta is only 61K
yes, iso discussions are going on in irc.

Thanks, I got 4.16, will give it a go in the vm today.

EDIT: Installing now, but I see the installer kernel wants PAE again... ???

EDIT2: Ok, got to xfce without a hitch this time (except for having to activate PAE in virtualbox). Just a little detail that could create confusion during install:

- FUNCTIONS and README.FUNCTIONS show as available services in the System Services selection screen of the installer.

EDIT3: Just had a little chance to check on that and those 2 files should not be in /etc/rc.d/init.d, but rather in /etc/rc.d.

unable to make KB or mouse work in X. Both working fine on console.

I have tried tui installation already. Unfortunately my install CD VL7-ALpha-2
(the last I could burn before CD drive died) does not find anything in tui mode.
Install CD VL-6 in tui finds only the CD.

I will try later to intall to my old HD to see it it is a HD issue. When working
with VL6STD or VL6SOHO there seems to be no problem. Both are on different drives.
However, on booting I get the following message for both drive hda and hdc:

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
hda: possibly failed opcode: 0x25

Drive hda is brand new

I have no idea what that means.

There's a problem with exaile player...I'm testing Vector Linux 7.0 CORE Alpha 4.16
and Exaile from the menu does not work and from a terminal i got the message:
ImportError: No module named pygst
The package gst-python-0.10.19-i686-1vl70 is installed.
Then i do something to test and it works
#cd /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/
#cp -rf * /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/

It started Exaile, and it's working.

i think gst-python needs to be upgraded.

Title: Re: VectorLinux Core 7 Alpha4 is up and ready to test
Post by: MO9013 on January 29, 2011, 07:20:14 pm
I have  Toshiba Satelite A665 S6050 core i3.   7.1 wouldn't install so waited and tried 7.15 and is currently running well.  I couldn't boot it from a pen drive but the cd went without a hitch.  Couple of problems though.

1.  No sound from the beginning and I tried the default sound process mentioned earlier with no success.

2.  Had 7 Cairo-Docks but fixed it with the post from earlier.

3. No wireless.  Still not working. When I go to Wicd it tells me no wireless. Tried the wireless how to but i get permission denied even as SU. Seems like the modules are there just not working. Went to Intel website and downloaded the firm wear but still no go. Terminal post at end.

4. More of a question then a problem, but were and what version of Open Office do I get. Its not in the Repository.

MO9013,

you need to run depmod as root.
open wicd and change the wireless wlan1 and see if it finds any access points.

I tried changing it before.  I use wan0 for my usb wireless to work but wlan1 doesn't find anything and stops my usb from working.
when I depmod as root I get this

I'm using VL7 a4 because I had problems with a4.15/16. There doesn't seem to be any app or library to use to expand .rar files. This is pretty important, so I hope that a .rar application will be included in upcoming betas.

Looks like devs where thinking the same thing. 'unrar' is on alpha 4.21.

Alpha 4.21 is out on Distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com/)
Kernel is now 2.6.37 and it seems more agreeable on all machines I tested on.
Also, Xfce is now 4.8.0.
Anyone who has shied away from the distro with the kernel testing that went on since alpha 4.0, I would say this is a good time to jump back in.
Some notes...
Installed very painlessly on the 3/4 machines at home I tested.
Xfce 4.8 can access your other partitions right from thunar or the desktop.  I know, you could always set up to access the other partitions with vasm, but it's nice to be able to do right from the get go.  Thunar can also access the other alpha4.21 machines on your network from Thunar.
There is a lot I like here is the bit that I noticed that may need the dev's attention.

1. Desktop files are not showing the correct icon on the desktop.  It's odd, because they seem to be set up correctly.  Once more, they are easily fixed by right-clicking editing the launcher and selecting the same icon again.

2. The move to the 2.6.37 kernel seems to have made my Nvidia proprietary driver uninstallable.  I will have to get the exa

3. The one machine I couldn't install on was a dell that only had usb ports for the keyboard.  I don't know if it was my brand of keyboard but it could not be detected once the installer started.  Would be nice to hear from someone else using a usb keyboard about their experience.

4. When first launched after a startup Thunar seems to take quite a long while.  I assume this is because it now checks for network connections and other partitions.  It does seem to be quicker on machines that have no other partitions and no other networked machines.

5. Noticed that using vasm to mount partitions (the way we used to) shuts the xfce functionality down and partitions can only be accessed via /mnt/sda? (the old way).  Don't know if we should keep that in Vasm or lose it, in favour of the xfce function.

6. I hoping to test this to see if it happens again, but on the one machine I set up to use grub as it's boot loader.  I thought I set up a user account but at first boot I had to sign in as root and set the user account again with vasm.

None of the players in Multimedia would play an audio CD. xine even hangs and had to be xkill(ed).

/usr/bin/cdda-player plays an audio CD well.

none of my printers are detected. Cups shows only SCSI as local printer.

I installed VL7 a4.21. Although my LCD monitor's resolution is 1280x1024, I had to select 1024x768 for the installer. The computer crashes and monitor goes black at 1280x1024 in the installer. The rest of the installation was uneventful. My USB keyboard and mouse worked in the installer and when XFce started.

I haven't had a chance to do any further setting up. Will report on what happens. I really hated the look of XFce when it started but will fix it up to my liking tomorrow.

Any hints about when beta I will come out? I'm about ready to start testing on my other desktop computer but I don't want to take the time to install a4.21 if beta1 is a week or two away.

Now why in the world have the installer told me that it couldn't find my card?

With sound working I can listen to grabbag and wait for Duke Nukem Forever to come out ;-)

EDIT:
Just tried burning an image with Xfburn - it was saying that the drive was empty even though I put a CD-R in. I had to close and open it up again for it to work. I never used Xfburn before, so I can't tell if it's a problem or that's just the way it behaves.

Post by: GrannyGeek on February 03, 2011, 11:25:02 am
I spent the morning customizing, copying directories for icons, libraries, etc., and installing Tuxcards and CBTracker. I always have to copy libraries for those two from an earlier VL installation. The copied libraries do not overwrite any existing libraries. Sound, proper video, Internet are all working. I'm getting MUCH better glxgears scores than I did in VL7 a4.

Everything was going great until it all went bad. I think there's a serious bug involved here, as the same thing happened in alpha 4.15.

I did something (not sure what) and my icons disappeared, my desktop background went from the picture I use to a darkish blue, and I can't change it. Programs look right except icons are missing. For example, I'm writing this in Firefox. Window controls such as Minimize, Maximize, Close, Pin, etc., are all there. Pictures in the window such as for ads, VL's Donate button, and so forth are there and right. But the icons for Go Back, Open a new tab, Reload, Stop Loading, are missing. Instead there's a little "page" with a red x in it. That's what desktop icons have, too. Launcher icons in the Panel are missing completely, but some icons for running programs are there; others have a generic icon. In XFce Settings, Desktop, Background tab, nothing is listed. I tried clicking on Add an image to the list and selected a file in /usr/share/wallpapers, but nothing was added to the Backgrounds list.

It seems something is amiss in the window manager and I have no idea how to fix it. This happened after I tried changing an icon for a launcher through XFce's new editor for Launcher properties. I also ran qtconfig and changed the GUI style. I don't know the exact sequence when the icons disappeared. I did run qtconfig again and changed back to the original GUI style.

I don't have icons if I run XFce as root, either.

What concerns me is that the exact same thing happened to me in alpha 4.15. I reported it here and asked if anyone had a fix, but got no answers to that. I suspect it's a simple fix. There has to be something wrong, a bug, I expect. I didn't do anything unusual or that any user might try.

I'll wait until tomorrow for an answer about how to fix this, if it's possible, but if I don't find out by tomorrow, I'll reinstall and not run qtconfig. If qtconfig is the culprit, I think it should be removed from the distro because running it may trash your installation.

Actually, things are working except for no icons and no possibility to change the background or add icons.

When a4.15 had the same problem, I tried going back to skel through VASM but that did no good. It's system wide (root has the same problem and I never ran a root desktop until I checked to see if the icons were missing).

I'm sort of tearing my hair out because I really liked what I was seeing until this happened.

Post by: GrannyGeek on February 03, 2011, 11:58:55 am
I fixed the problem and the solution is very interesting.

From the error messages I got when I tried to run mousepad, I saw that a bunch of libpixbufloader libraries were not found in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders. I copied them over from vl7a4, ran ldconfig, and I was able to change the background, get the icons to appear, and so forth.

So something made those libraries disappear. Running qtconfig? I doubt that trying to change an icon was responsible. It would be good to track this down because it's bound to happen to someone else and the fix is not at all obvious.

Phew! Now I can get back to configuring a4.21. I'm glad to have XFce4.8 included. Some of the changes were a bit unsettling but not hard to figure out. I do prefer the old way of editing launchers, as the new way forces an extra step on me.

I had something similar when I was compiling comix.
I got a package for it, but every time I install it, I get the exact same problem that you just described. I never got around to figure it out, though. I suspect it's something in the install.sh script that causes it. So if anyone want's to reproduce the problem GrannyGeek just described, I can upload the package.

I did more installing, configuring, and running and have some things to report.

I couldn't make a LILO boot floppy disk because there was no vmlinuz file in /boot. I made a symlink and then was able to create a boot floppy for LILO. It didn't pick up my VL 7 a4 because there is no vmlinuz file in the /tamu thing, I'm guessing. I may try to symlink what's needed and see if LILO is successful in adding VL7 a4 to the boot list. I hope this will be fixed, as I don't think a real newbie would have a clue and would give up.

Installing Root Terminal in a panel Launcher does not work, nor does starting a Root Terminal work in the Applications Menu. The executable command is wrong. I fixed it to point to /sbin/vsuper /usr/bin/Terminal and can now get a Root Terminal.

Opera's license agreement screen is blank, as someone already reported. The Flash plugin is not working in Opera, though it's working in Firefox and SeaMonkey. The path to the plugins for Opera is correct but it thinks it has no plugin installed. I've had similar problems with earlier versions and somehow got them fixed, except for one time when nothing worked, not even a complete removal and reinstallation. Is anyone else having a problem with Flash in Opera 11.01 in a4.21? Except for that, Opera seems okay. I'm writing this in Opera from a4.21.

When I installed SeaMonkey from Gslapt, it complained about a missing gconf, I think, but I installed it anyway. SeaMonkey does not give any error messages when I start it from a command line and is working fine. Perhaps a false dependency? Gslapt offered me several packages for programs that were older than what is installed in a4.21. No big problem but it can be confusing.

I installed Scribus 1.3.9 in my home directory; I compiled it myself under VL7a4. It's working but is complaining about python problems. I didn't run any of Scribus's python-dependent things. Whatever I needed wasn't in Gslapt or a newer version of a dependency was needed that wasn't available in the VL7 repo. I hope VL7 final will come with Scribus 1.3.9. Actually, Scribus 1.4 will probably be released by that time and if so, that's what should be in VL7 final.

My glxgears scores are way better than in alpha 4 and general performance is spiffier.

That's all I can think of now.

I think it's amazingly good for an alpha release. Thanks, devs and everybody who is working on this!

Vector Linux 7.0 STD Alpha 4.21 built on JAN-30-2011

Install was ok, though attempting to use 'gui vga=870' caused a lock-up - had to let it run at native resolution for some reason.

The installer is still creating a ~/bash_profile which sets LANG=en_US. Not a good option - its in the wrong place and overrides any attempt to set correct localisation.

I'm not getting the normal logout options - only restart and shutdown, none of the hibernate or suspend options are available for some reason.

Most other things seem to be working. The network handling in Xfce 4.8 is pretty good - once I set up a basic Samba configuration, I'm able to log in to my NAS and other machines on the network. Not sure about its handling of Linux networking - haven't seen any support for NFS, which is my normal connection method for Linux machines.

I had to use VASM to mount local partitions, otherwise the desktop was covered with unmounted partitions.

Its nice to see vcpufreq back, but its not working properly. I can set it, and set 'load on boot', but the next time the machine is started, it is not running. Looking at /etc/rc.d/rc.local, I see that "/sbin/vcpufreq-loader.gambas" is commented out. I'll see if that fixes it.....

Paul.

Alpha 22 is looking very nice - once it's installed. The problem of running the text installer has returned for me and on the last couple of Alphas it hangs before getting very far. It's odd, the "loading sata kernel" step seems very quick, only a few .... and then a load of lines flash by and it hangs with the caps lock flashing, needing a hard power off. Same problem on both a P3 and a P4.

The GUI installer starts of in the same way but eventually arrives at the GUI and I can do the install. But when booting into Vector (every time) I get dozens of lines flashing by (some rather slowly!) in sections with headings such as evel@redhat.com and lines such as "[1.079017] cpuidle: using govenor menu" and "ati: link is slow to respond, please be patient". Eventually it gets to the more familiar "INIT version 2.6.8 booting... ", loading modules etc. and eventually gets to the log in screen.

XFCE 4.8 looks nice - great to have it included so quickly - but it took me ages to find out how to move the panel to the bottom  :)  I tried to add xfce-mount-plugin from Gslapt but got a dependency error about startup notification>0.10

Haven't installed much yet, but both wine and grsync seemed ok. Audacious had a missing dependency, wxGTK: Depends: sdl > 1.2.13

Looking forward to Beta 1!
Andy

I rebuild wxGTK, which should fix that misnamed dependency.

Thanks budulay. Audacity installs ok now, but it doesn't run. Opening from the terminal gives: error while opening shared libraries: libwx_gtk2u_richtext-2.8.so.0

On a different matter, running Scribus 1.3.8 from the menu gives an error: there is a problem loading 1 of 29 plugins:  libscriptplugin.so - but the program opens and seems to run, though I haven't done anything with it yet.

Looking forward to trying alpha 22, quick question can you refresh me how you use a delta, ie using the delta to change an iso from 21 to 22?  I have downloaded the iso of alpha 22 but would be good for future reference.

Code: [Select]
xdelta patch VL7.0-STD-ALPHA-4.21to4.22.deltathat is enough if your 4.21.iso is in the same dir if not you will have to give the path and iso as an additional argument.

Vector Linux 7.0 STD Alpha 4.22

Install was fine (no lockup this time using 'gui vga=870').

Problem with localisation. If I set LANG up the way I need it (LANG=en_GB.utf8) a number of things do not display correctly - nano, MC to name just two. This is a new problem - haven't seen it for a while. But it makes the system pretty well unusable for me. Problem seems to be in the handling of UTF8 - setting LANG=en_GB works, sort of. Just not a viable long term option.

Problem with sound. My T61 has Intel HDA sound. Since VL6.0, in order to get sound working, I've had to:

Open the mixer and use 'select controls' to enable Master, PCM, Speaker and Headphone.
Use the Switches tab to select both speaker and headphone outputs

Doing the same with 7.0a4.22 gets me sound. However, as soon as I restart the machine, I have no sound without repeating the process. I've tried using alsamixer and the Xfce mixer - same results. I've also tried 'alsactl store' after setting the levels I want, but it doesn't help. Every time the machine is restarted, no sound....

So far, other than the above, most things look ok.

Paul.

Thanks! saved that for future usage, I have noticed that some deltas are bigger than others suggesting more changes in some.

--GrannyGeek
Granny,
I am thinking this may be caused by a pkg you are installing.
can you check the pkgs you added to the system and see if any of them have a usr/share/mime dir in them?

I fixed this problem, as I mentioned in a message. Something wiped out a bunch of libpixbufloader libraries in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders. When I copied them from alpha4, everything went back as it was supposed to be.

I thought running qtconfig might be the culprit but I'll see if I can find a /usr/share/mime in packages I installed.

the libpixbufloaders libraries have been moved in last gdk-pixbuf to /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/
maybe there is an older pkg lurking that is looking for them in the old location.

Replaced my failing hard drive and reinstalled A22. Still can't install using the text installer, but the GUI installer runs fine now.

Opened Gslapt and did an update all. This upgraded about half a dozen packages but libgphoto2 failed, needing hal>=0.5.1.4

Tried to install Thunderbird and this failed needing gconf>=2.31.1

I installed xfce-mount-plugin. When I insert a USB drive or CD their icons appear on the desktop but they are not automatically mounted. It's easy enough to set in XFCE removable drives and media, but I seem to remember drives mounting by default before.

Also, the mount plugin shows gvfs-fuse-daemon > /home/andy/.gvfs, but I don't have fuse set to run. What is this one?

Quite a few apps which are installed don't show up as installed in Gslapt e.g. xarchiver, nano

Other than these few small points it's looking good and running fast.
Cheers
Andy
