Title: VL Newbie---Community Repo and packages Qn
Post by: vikram on February 23, 2011, 08:34:34 pm
I have just installed Vl 6.0 SOHO and I am very much impressed by the smoothness of the distro...

With regard to packages I have some queries:

1. Where is the community Repo for downloading additional packages?
2. Can I use sbopkg and slack packages? I know VL uses Gslapt which in turn handles dependencies..Can I install the dependencies by hand using slack's sbopkg.
3. I tried vpackmanager , the builds are for the 5.8 version...How do I upgrade to the latest repo...
4. If I want to install more recent packages like libre office where do I look for?
5. Is there something like Slack Builds for installing from Source ?

Thx

Vikram

Good questions! I'd like to hear answers to a few of these as well.

I'm bumping this thread so hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself will find it!

These questions should really be answered in a "Packages FAQ" or something.

THANK  you (was contemplating doing that myself)
After my oblique mention to the need in "kernel" forum header

I would like to see (version specific) system core-base content

Yes, a one_stop_shop repository to locate all,  including up-dated Docs is needed
A weakness most Distros share (LOL -'with one notable exception of course)

Musings:
NTIM - You mentioned "power user" (nice to see)  in Nuts & Bolts:
From that I presumed use of sbbuilder necessitated pre-knowledge of repository sources

Off topic - I did not dwell on your intriguing content (since  its' original  focus was on package Mgt. vs system in/out bottle-necks

Best wishes
