Title: VL 5.8 Screenshots
Post by: kidd on December 28, 2006, 04:06:14 am
Hi,
Looking at  joe's post (http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=98.msg8001#msg8001) on vl reviews and mentions I saw on that review, they have a link to vectorlinux screenshots page, and realized no 5.8 screenshots are shown there (only 5.1 and previous).

Should we (comunity) post some screenshots of default configuration, or devs prefer to do it?
IMHO, having the website up to date is essential...

Regards

I think it would be useful to post screenshots. Just try not to post large graphics in the forum itself, mainly because some of our readers are on dialup connections where they pay per-minute charges and/or have caps on the bandwidth they can use each month. I would suggest putting the screenshots on a site like photobucket.com and put hyperlinks here.

Once Vector sees some shots, I'm sure he'll get the best of the best for the web site. ;-)

Cheers,
John

WOW!  M0E-lnx, I'm impressed! Have not seen Beryl in action before. Was it a lot of work to get it running on VL?

I have the same version of vec. M0e made a special cd version of vec with xorg 7.1 .There are some minor bugs to squash, but it works pretty well.
Beryl guys make new releases  each week, which is pretty exciting because we get to see more and more new features..
Beryl is considerably easy to build from svn...

now i have a clean install on vec at the laptop and while my dad isnt using it,I managed to make a bunch of screenies...

(http://xs411.xs.to/xs411/07044/vector-graphics.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs411&d=07044&f=vector-graphics.jpg)

(http://xs411.xs.to/xs411/07044/vector-net.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs411&d=07044&f=vector-net.jpg)

(http://xs411.xs.to/xs411/07044/vector-sys.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs411&d=07044&f=vector-sys.jpg)

my first impressions of vec 5.8 gold~

>boot menu image -- i didnt like it,sry.
>login screen - I liked it,pretty glossy and polished, but why that kde-ish blue-everywhere
>default wallpaper -- again,it had the style of the boot menu, same ol blue. Sry,I didnt like it
>icon set-- pretty good =)  I got used to it too
>organisation of the desktop: its abit crowded down there (the panel) You need to free some space for the task list and the tray..  and two desktops is better than 4

Other than that- You did a pretty good job . =)

VectorLinux 5.8 SOHO Alpha 4, with a window decoration modification:

http://clientes.netvisao.pt/alynnsut/soho_5.8_alpha4.png

Before pelting me with eggs and tomatoes over the vista look, let me explain myself  ;D:

I found this window decoration quite interesting since it does not require that composite rendering be enabled in xorg to function smoothly.
My nvidia TNT card with only 16mb of ram handles the translucency without any hiccups (but must have nvidia's proprietary driver installed of course...); and its not like aterm's fake transparency, this theme draws the overlay in real-time.
The theme is certainly good for those who do not wish to have a full-fledged 3d desktop + beryl/compiz just to get some decent eye-candy.

Besides, the vista buttons are not a must. Using the KDE Control Center, one can change every aspect of what it should look like in the "window decorations" section. ;)

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=13969&vote=good&tan=94735637

Installation is simple:

- unpack the tarball
- open a terminal and enter the crystal theme directory
- ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde
- make
- su -c "make install"

And here's my desktop:

(http://images13.fotosik.pl/32/cc8dd7f272da9d4bm.png) (http://www.fotosik.pl/showFullSize.php?id=cc8dd7f272da9d4b)

Xfce4.4
Thunar + thunar volman
composite - enabled
gtk-engine: Candido-Engine-Squared (u need to instal separetly) (xfce-look.org)
xfce-theme: MurrinaCandy (xfce-look.org)
icons: SnowIsh-1.0_PNG +some custom icons
audacious: skin - Dark Materia for winamp 2.x (icon from foobar - shame there's no port for lnx)
console: tilda (must have)

I've tryed X.org 7.1 + beryl but with no results. Always was downgrade or reinstall :P I've tryed also a lot of custom icon themes but some were incomplite, some broken, some didn't work. SnowIsh and Vista Inspirate are best :) Enlightenment E17... hmm... still have a lot o bugs and must say fancy look is not enough.

I will try also FVWM-Crystal, but today i couldn't run it... Maybe someone will help or make a package?

At the end i must admit that i like clean and eye-friendly themes, fonts and layouts :)

Nothing fancy. But still a screenshot:

http://www.fali.nl/wiki/uploads/ICT/image.gif

Transmission added, that should be standard in my opinion.
VDateSet, just to show how simple VL makes things. (And I am not gonna tell you all how long it took to find that button ;) )
The background is Milk-glass_leafed_bm-ed.jpg, which I found in one of the topics about a new desktop design for 5.8. I like that not so techy look. Really something different from all that shiny blinky backgrounds.

Hey, M0E-lnx, what is that bar along the top right of your screen?  I don't believe I've seen that short cut bar before.

Awesome screenies though, I'm downloading Beta 2 of Beryl LIVE and hope to give it a spin tomorrow/later today.

It's called the kiba-dock. It's pretty kool, but it needs beryl for transparencies..
I have the package on along with new beryl packages at http://m0e.lnx.googlepages.com

Running Beryl on my laptop. A little buggy starting the first time. Windows decoration not showing. But after a reboot of the windows manager/decorator it runs fine now.

Yes, Please. I was thinking to make a boot theme and login theme to match (as best I can). Sources would be handy in that area.

You will need to run Qtconfig for all users that you wan't to change.
vpackager is a root app, so logon as root in a terminal, and then run "qtconfig" and select the polymer style. Then you can tweak the colors to your liking.

oops, forgot about that.... But i can't change the background color. I change it to white, close the window (save) and when i start it again, its grey again. :-\

These default settings should be tuned for future releases to look better.  :-\ Even with motif, the background would look better in white.
Thanks for telling me about this.I remember seign it in an older version of vec,in icewm..there was a menu entry for qtconfig, but i forgot about it.

Edit: oops,sorry..I got it now! Thanks!

Yeah, I had that too lighans :). But I recently switched to the animated dance gif. I'm not completely happy with it yet, but it'll have to do for now. Making a new animated gif is a lot of work for me.. there's probably better ways to do it than my current work flow, but I have yet to find it.

Black is very good...and adical. Less tiring to the eye,it combines GREAT with blue.

The avatar is pretty nice, i liked the anime one too,and he did have a pretty good eye avatar (eye changing colors?). The dance could look better. :P

btw, this is vec pseudo (upgraded to sw12's greatness) It is a pretty good install ,altho it had some minor issues to iron out,and vasm doesnt work completely right here..

I got it from svn. If we had a build-script for that,it would be a keeper  :-*

note:i had to refresh libraries (ldcache?) after installing it to make it start. Also it will be installed in /opt and have a sepparate menu entry (it wont overwrite old gimp's)
Code: [Select]
svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gimp/trunk gimp

latest gimp+ google desktop (it just got ported for linux,go get it, better in ways than beagle if you ask me and no need for mono)
(http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07375/googledesktop-morning.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs219&d=07375&f=googledesktop-morning.jpg)

I am thinking of making a google package for the repo, that contains:
latest picasa+latest google desktop+ google earth... or i can make them sepparate packages.
Google wouldnt mind if we have them for the repo, and they are static builds, so it doesnt matter which vector you install them on (if we had a static repo...)

...orr since picasa and google earth have both nice installers, while google desktop doesnt, i can package google-desktop:
here is a package:
http://desktop.google.com/linux/
download the rpm,and then do the command:
rpm2tgz *.rpm

since it is static,it will run flawlessly on any vector.

pretty soon expect to see gtalk ported aswell. Its in google's priorities list, also i was hoping they'd port sketchup.
