No internet connection - wicd-daemon quits and therefore no network-interface can be detected for configuration sequence.
How can I force a restart of the wicd-daemon?

/etc/rc.d/rc.wicd restart
if it's not there look in /etc/rc.d/init.d/wicd

It's worked for me to just su to root in the terminal
then type
wicd
and press enter.
Seems to be enough to restart the daemon.

I am very pleased. The installation was flawless. KDE4 works from the repositories.
The only error message that I have seen is from starting Adobe Acrobat in the KDE4 menu. - "Unable to make the service Adobe Reader 9 executable. aborting execution" Curiously enough, starting Acrobat from the command line in a terminal works just fine. It may be a broken link.
I would like to see k3b in the repositories sometime since it is my favourite disk writer.
On whole, I am very impressed with Vector Linux 7 and look forward to the final version.

Vector classic worked good so I have been eager to try this.  wicd has not worked for me on four pc's.  I have checked the md5sum, and I have not had a defective burn with k3b.  I did get to the desktop.  I have a wired cable and router.
Cheers

Have you tried the official install cd or is this just with live? We know with live we have a wicd problem with the install cd should be no such problem (thats why we called live beta1...........:) )

Agh, just posted in the other thread about the install CD version about the live wicd problem, hadn't seen this thread. Also a couple of other points, not sure how significant they are.

Thanks for the reply, this is the live cd.  When wicd is running my eth conn is not detected.  VL classic works fine.
Cheers

Burned a CD and opened VL-LIVE in HP-2133.
No internet connection.
It detected eth0 when it should be apparently eth1. Changed that in rc.inet1.
"rc.inet1 start" gives the following:
using hwaddr 00:1f:.......
executing 'lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason PREINIT
executing 'lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason NOCARRIER
eth1: waiting for carrier
time out
allowing 8 seconds for IPv4LL timeout
timed out

I gave /sbin/eth0 up and got "No such device"
So I changed to eth1 and it was accepted therefore the "apparently"
above.

Strange, I cannot boot VL7-LIVE with my desktop. Tried it 4 times and
end with boot failed.

Tried VL7-LIVE again with HP-2133-Mini-Note and it  comes up right away.

With VL6-Light-Live and VL6-KDE-Live or Salix-Live-Fluxbox there is no such problem.

I had the following problems with 7.0 Live Beta-1:

1.) Network icon on panel did not respond

2.) When trying to open wicd from menu, I repeatedly got:

Code: [Select]
Could not connect wicd D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages
3.) Nothing happened when I clicked-on "Disk Utility" from the "System" menu.

4.) I created and saved a .txt file with Leafpad, then when I double-clicked on the file icon, it opened with AbiWord!

Right-clicking on the file icon gave the option to open with Geany, right-under AbiWord. In order to open with Leafpad, the app that I actually _created_ the file with, I had to scroll down and find Leafpad in a long list of programs (most of which seem to make no sense for opening a .txt file in)

5.) Chestnut Dialer would only work if I opened it in a terminal from which I had first invoked root privileges.

Otherwise, it returns an error message of not being able to load the "sfo modem plugin" or something to that effect and will not even dial.

Also, the following, each and every time:

Code: [Select]
vector://home/vector
root:# chestnut-dialer
/usr/share/chestnut-dialer/chestnut_dialer/gtk2_ui/confbox.py:494: GtkWarning: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated
  chestnut_dialer.domain)
/usr/share/chestnut-dialer/chestnut_dialer/gtk2_ui/confbox.py:363: GtkWarning: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated
  chestnut_dialer.domain)
/usr/share/chestnut-dialer/chestnut_dialer/connection.py:190: RuntimeWarning: tempnam is a potential security risk to your program
  file_name = os.tempnam()

I had these same problems with Chestnut Dialer in the Live Light 6.0 release as well.

There is no file /usr/share/dict/words, therefore, 'look' does not work.

Now running live CD on a ThinkPad R51 Pentium M laptop. Booted OK using the default no xorg.conf. This machine was problematic during the KMS madness of a while back, many attempted boots on sundry distros went into the darkness . . . . See lspci output below for specs.

One thing I noticed was that Vector appears to have decided that the wifi interface on the machine shall be known as eth2. Commonly it is seen as eth1. Took a few minutes to work out why wicd wasn't hooking up. Got a WPA2 connection while running as root. Look forward to the user being able to use the wifi . . . .

Like another poster above, clicking on Disk Utility under System had no result. No idea what this menu entry should launch. Tried gparted in a terminal, nothing. However parted does run.

Hmmm, wifi connection on an open network has dropped out after around 15 minutes. Unclear why. Reconnect OK.

Like the look of this release, though the screen is a bit crowded on this 1024x768 LCD.

I burned another CD this time with my new CD drive of my desktop PC.

I can now boot from my PC.

Booting in HP-2133 takes forever, more than 20 min to open vmlinuz and initrd.
Put the option "compact" and zoom it opened. ;D

For those having problems with the pointer going wild by the touchpad mouse
I have to reports that there is no such thing in my case, unlike when I
first installed VL-6 on this machine which was then corrected with gsynapsis.
Now I do not know if VL7-LIVE snatches the settings from VL6. ;)

I'm on Live Beta2 here.

There are two themes saved for Cairo-Dock. The one in use does not seem to be saved to either of these. If I change to "_default_" or to "Humanity-dock", then I can not change back to the setup that the live environment starts with.

I would think that the web browser in the Cairo-Dock, should be the system-default browser.  I don't know what the system-default browser is, but when I click the firefox icon in Cairo, it says it is not the default and asks to be set.

The Cairo-Dock graphics launcher has an icon for F-Spot, but F-spot does not seem to be on the system. Perhaps this should rather be an icon for Shotwell? Additionally illustrated through Cairo-Dock in the graphics launcher, but not a problem with the Dock settings... Inkscape does not properly start. Inkscape is trying to load libpoppler.so.12. The poppler-0.16.4-i486-16 package provides /usr/lib/libpoppler.so.13.0.0.

The alt-tab task switcher causes a lag and frozen mouse for 2-4 seconds. It happens the same if briefly hitting alt-tab just once, or if holding alt and then hitting tab more than once to scroll through available tasks. Each time the tab is hit in this case, the mouse freezes for 2-4 seconds. During this lag, cpu consumption for X jumps up. Observed as much as 94%.

I think I've seen this mentioned as a bug before, perhaps just on IRC. Console mouse (GDM) fails to start with system bootup. Obviously this has an impact on efficiency of working in a console.

What is this live beta 2 of which you speak? Or, to be precise, where is it? Can't see such an image in my brief search.

Not getting the problem with ALT+TAB you mention here on BETA-1. This on a ThinkPad with i915. Maybe something related to a specific video card? Perhaps I am not running enough tasks.

After running a live session for several hours I tried to insert a USB stick - however the system said "Error creating moint [sic]point. No such file or directory". I was logged in as root iirc because of the problem with running wicd as a user.

Glad to report that I finally made a wireless Internet connection in HP-2133. ;D ;D ;D
In wicd-client >Preferences >wireless interface I changed eth0 to wlan0  and
connection was established after pressing Connect.  What a relief. ::)

Just booted rc2, it got to the desktop and connected automagically to the internet(cable).  Good work.  Now I can test it.  It seems to boot and run a little slow, it doesn't seem to be for low spec hardware although it does run on dell inspiron 4000.  900 mhz 256 mb ram linux swap part.  Vector classic kde is running well on dell lt.
Cheers

After installing to hard drive, I get dbus/wicd errors.
This is because /var/run/wicd/wicd.pid exists.
I think I added a command to the installer on VL6 to avoid this, will check into that.

Edit: Yes, in VL6.0-KDE-Classic-Live, /sbin/vliveinstall was modified to remove the file.
Warning: That version of the installer also removes the vlive tools. I'll do some playing around with it.
