Title: VectorLinux 7.0 GOLD has been released!!
Post by: vector on November 27, 2011, 11:09:01 pm
The final release of VectorLinux 7.0 (code name 'GG') is now available. This release is the result of nearly two years of blood sweet and tears since the very successful release of VectorLinux 6.0. With the enthusiasm of a small group of packagers, our repository now hosts over a thousand up to date packages. VectorLinux is the fastest Linux desktop in it's class bar none. We have exceeded our original goals of VectorLinux 7 and produced a beautiful, full featured stable desktop that is fun, fast and efficient.

The main desktop is based on Xfce-4.8 with a custom theme and artwork again unique to VectorLinux. FluxBox is installed as a secondary desktop option. Much work has been done on localization and we know users from all over the globe will find VectorLinux usable in their language of choice.

All the VectorLinux trademarks are included: DVD playback, Audio and Video Codecs, Multimedia and Java plugins are installed and working out of the box. The best of the Open Source world is included: Gimp, Inkscape, Geeqie and Shotwell for Graphics; the latest Firefox and Opera for Internet Browsing;  Pidgin and Xchat for instant messaging; Brasero for CD burning (K3B is available in the repo); Mplayer, UMplayer, Xine and Exaile for playing most available media formats. The office applications are Gnumeric and Abiword (Libreoffice and many others available in the repo).

Wireless networking has been extended with updated drivers and firmware, Wicd has been employed to manage wireless and non wireless networking. Ufw with the Gufw gui is included for firewall protection and there is added support for several webcam makes and models.

The Kernel is version 3.0.8 and there have been improvements in installation, usability and hardware Support. We believe this release will fulfill all the hardware requirements of even the most modern equipment.

A special "Thank You" to the testers and packagers that helped during the development phase to make this release a reality.

There is also a live version of the current release which allows for pretesting the viability of the release on an individual basis. We are currently testing a 64 bit version of VectorLinux 7 that has reached the beta stage check our forum for progress.

Indeed a special thanks to the testers and packagers. They really worked extremely hard, often without coffee, tea, and wee breaks. It was also hard to keep up on the delivery of the box materials, hammers, nails, lines of code and such. We did do towel runs to pat their sweat down as they were building away.....  ;D

P.S.
      stretchedthin, hata_ph, and pierce.jason,
awful sorry about the paper wads landing in your cubicals while working. Don't worry I'll clean up later. ;D

Seriously though...
Thank you testers and packagers! A huge job very well done.

Another beautiful Vector Linux release, and beautifully timed.    With the slick 4.8 release (and the icky gnome 3) XFCE is poised to take its place as the preferred no-nonsense Linux DE, and this is as beautiful as XFCE gets.

Minor complaint: even after adding the unstable and testing repositories, I had to compile GNU Emacs myself.    Not hard if you know how to do it  (No additional dependancies), but Emacs seems like a major omission.  Did I do something wrong?  Are the repos still under construction?

Thanks.  I figured that so I PM'd him.  I think I can help wrinkle out a couple of small things in the live as I have a bit of time right now.

And yes it is a very nice release.  I love the artwork and what you folks have done with it.

I've got emacs packaged and will have it in the repositories, shortly.
hata_ph beat me too it.  Sent me a pm letting me know it was already done.  Has been uploaded and should be at the ready for anyone who needs it.

So the repositories are still taking shape.  That's all I needed to know.  8)

Some of this software is brand spanking new.  This is the first time I've seen this version of the simple video editor KINO.  I did some editing last night, and a really longstanding MAJOR bug has finally been fixed.  I'm too busy to describe it right now, but if you use KINO, you know
what I'm talking about.

Also, I think this is the first time I've ever used a 3.0 kernel.

Give Openshot and kdenlive a try as well.  While your at it why not try installing them through vl-qwik-picks under the Multimedia category of the menu.

First a short note to all the members.....I have been absent from the forums for awhile due to personal issues. (work, health, family, etc.) so i patiently watched from the sidelines as your development progressed on VL 7.0. I felt my spotty contributions in the interim would only be a nuisance, so I decided to stay out of the mix.

Now I have VL 7.0 installed and it is breathtaking!! a masterful crafting of Linux that just shines !! Words cannot describe my initial impressions so I'll defer to an illustration :

This is the first time I've managed to get EVERYTHING I NEED in a Slackware-based distro.    Haven't had a chance to try it all out yet, but I already know that on Vector Linux, things tend to work.

After nine years of using Linux, I think I may have finally been cured me of my Debian addiction.

At 10 pm tonight I decided to switch from VL 7 rc 2.1 to VL 7.0.  Its now midnight and I am basically done.  I first installed 7.0 (went perfectly), then etm (Dan Graham's calendaring and time keeping program), then thunderbird, then libreoffice (which I deleted as I had done in 2.1 due to the "general error" on opening a file), then openoffice from slackbuilds.org, then dosbox (to run foxpro 2.6), then twinkle, then tetex and lyx, then medit and finally, after confirming that "open terminal here" still doesn't work in Thunar, XFE.  All went perfectly.  Even pdfsam still works without a reinstall. I am most impressed.  I will try printing tomorrow at the office.  That has been problematic.   Two hours is darn good.  All my files are right where they were.

Good work!

John

hata_ph  I tried them both and so far both are working fine.  Libreoffice no longer gives the general error on opening an odt document.  Don't see much advantage though in libreoffice vs openoffice.  Seem the same to me.  I use them mainly to format and print documents composed on google.docs.  Lyx, beautiful lyx, doesn't work for this purpose and since it doesn't lend itself to easy collaboration, is, sadly, being used by our office less and less.  Mostly to edit docs done in lyx before google docs came along.  If I ever write a book, though, I will do it in lyx.

They pretty much are the same.

I'm thinking that this is the direction we should be going as well and send a message to Oracle to, well, you get the idea.

Hi everybody

Welcome VL7 at last ! And many thanks to all the staff: clearly
there has been an enormous amount of work involved in this
(painful ?) delivery.

Unfortunately, as in all human matters, nothing is perfect. I
would like to (constructively) report several malfunctions
that I discovered. Most of them appear when trying to use
programs from KDE: K3b, Kwrite, etc... which I installed by
the "official" way, i.e. using the VL repositories and gslapt.

Where can I report ? Here ?

Demigaucher
happily running VL6, and hoping to do the same with VL7 soon

I've installed VL7 Gold on my Sempron desktop. Everything went flawlessly. No problems at all so far. Many thanks to the devs and everyone else who has worked on this.

I'm going to get rid of one desktop computer because we're planning to move to smaller quarters in two or three months and we need to downsize. I've decided to consolidate things on the Sempron even though the processor is considerably slower than the Athlon 64 X2--though plenty fast for the stuff I do. The Sempron as a whole is newer and more up to date and the CPU is upgradeable if we want more speed. So I probably won't install on the Athlon 64, as I'm phasing it out. I got a new laptop last week and hope to get VL7 installed and working there. Unfortunately, I need to do a lot of backing up (Windows 7) because I have to delete a couple of the four primary partitions that came set up on it and then shrink a few hundred gigs from Win 7 so I can set up an extended partition for Linux.

I no longer have any crap computers. All processors are now 64 bit and if I can find the time and energy, I'm eager to test our upcoming 64-bit version.

VL7 Gold is everything I hoped it would be, a true thing of beauty.

Well, I downloaded and installed 7.0 Gold on both machines  Very nice and very fast too. Currently, I am still using KDE 6.0 as my main O.S. and have been since its release. It's really hard to give up what I  am used to.  KDE 3.XX.

I have been using Vector Linux since 2004 and doubt if I will ever switch to another distro, even though I have tried several through the years. Keep up the good work!.

Absolutely beautiful work.  I am amazed at the level of eye candy packed into such a fast and light distro.  VL7.0
is the very proof of what Linux can be.

Thank you for all the hard work - and Google Chrome in the repo!!! :)

Okies;
I have 7.0 Std Gold up and running.

A few issue, that jumped in my eye:

-Old, recurring issue(of minor importance, I might say...) : User- accounts, created during install just aren't. You have to create them post-install. Better fix that issue or remove the instance from the installer.

-The dock(default at the bottom of the screen...) is like that obnoxious "photobomber" you'll find at every party; Annoying and blaringly obtrusive. Why are there TWO docks anyway?...
I'll see if I can get rid of that one.

-Again, my usual gripe: WHY the multitude of apps, covering the same thing? I'm all for choice, mind me. But in the repositry.
And with the current applet that lets you pick by category what app you want to install even more so.
I mean; GQView(Geequie or something like that now, I believe..) is about the best image-viewer available, why add that lame-ass Shotwell to the stack? If people want that they can Download it easily.
Bottom-line: it's easier to ADD software than to cut out the unwanted, surplus lard without messing up the entire system.

-To each his own, but I guess it's a marketing-thingy to make an OS look like made by Tonka or any such toy-factory.... I prefer a much more spartan, down-to-earth look. (And puh-lease: no "300"-jokes...) All this "eye-candy" is bad for my teeth...

A BIG word of praise though for the rightout MARVELOUS addition of VL-Quick-Picks!
THAT is a huge step forward!(I know, it's "just" a frontend to gslapt, but in this case the rule that the smallest chances can make the biggest improvement is eminent.)

Got some trimming to do, but 7.0 Std is to stay on my system. (Also because 6.0 light won't recognise the soundchip on my new rig...)

I've installed Vector 7 Standard on several computers,...and never had a problem setting up/adding a user on the initial install.   And I stopped the Cairo Dock as well.  It's just one of those things in the "start-up sessions" that you can go to,  and click to not start when you start-up Vector.   Then I just clicked on the edge of the top panel,...and dragged it on down to the bottom.  And also,...guess I really like having the different choices of apps.  But then,....I'm one of those still stuck on dialup,....and am thrilled not to have to do a bunch of downloading the apps I want.  (I'm spoiled).   ;D

All right, I've been using 7.0 GOLD exclusively for a few weeks now, and I think it's safe to say that this is the best OS I've ever used.  Version 7.0 runs even faster doing the same things on the hardware I was using for 6.0, and has more features ... I could go on, but I couldn't be more impressed.

I'll probably make a donation before Deluxe comes out (have to figure out what I can afford), and then buy the Deluxe edition (I assume there will be one).

All my thanks to everyone involved.

I gotta say, your guys' disto is the best, i had a bit of trouble with the live install cd not picking up my wireless stick or playing dvds but....i reinstalled about an hour ago with gold and it's awesome!!!! it not only picked up my wireless stick, but i'm also able to enjoy my dvd's now as it started playing them. i'm not knocking other distros of linux but....i tried six different distros and NONE would pick up my compact flash drive in my old sony vaio laptop other than vector!!! The only thing i dont really like is when i'm streaming any video from hard drive, flash drive, usb stick, or disc it's too slow and i gotta go into fluxbox to get it to stream normal speed(although, music plays fine).....also, for support u guys rock in that department also, i'm very glad i found vector and will be using it for years to come. All the best!!
