Title: DVD ripper please.
Post by: Locator on December 17, 2012, 11:32:37 am
Can anyone out there recommend a good quality, easy to use DVD ripper for Vector Linux 7.0?

My preferred method is the command line utility "vobcopy".

Some DVD's use trickery which confuses rippers. In those cases, I've had good luck with mplayer. It takes a little more work, you need to find the title which is the main movie, then dump it to one big mpeg file. Something like "mplayer dvd://2 --dumpstream --dumpfile bigmoviefile.mpeg".

I SAID "easy to use".

k9copy might work.  It's generally used for copying a dvd in the same way that Windows dvdshrink does (IE, compressing so that it fits onto a regular dvd).  But it also will rip a file into either an avi or mpeg file (I think mpeg-4 and mpeg-2 respectively.)  avi is generally a better choice since it's smaller.  You usually need to select the largest title from the dvd, along with its corresponding audio file, and it will generate a movie file from this.

No need to shout. Some of us consider typing "vobcopy -m" in a terminal to be simple.

As far as GUI program for ripping discs, I have found makemkv to be the easiest. Well worth 50 bucks.

dvd-rip is now in the testing repo.  Updated transcode with more codecs enabled fixed issue hata_ph was referring too.
Please help us discover if there are any issues we have not seen and report here  (http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=17236.0)after testing.
hint .. under the Video codec tab I had to change to xvid4, before I could rip all the way through.

While ripping was faster than thoggen or k3b it was about 40 minutes longer than HandBrake.

Think I gave this link on another thread, but here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS-_hxy4iyw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS-_hxy4iyw)

It's a tutorial on gslapt.  Just look for the bit where you go to sources tab and check the testing box, then update.
Really that simple.

Tried dvd::rip.  Seems to be working, though it's slow on my computer, and the program layout is a little confusing.  I remember using acidrip some years ago, and liked it then.  I just installed it on my computer, along with lsdvd, and will try it tomorrow.
The layout of Thoggen is good, but the fact that it only supports conversion to ogv is a little annoying.

Try HandBrake...it seem better

Unfortunately, the documentation link that you provided doesn't seem to be of any help, because when I start dvd::rip, I get the following display, so how do I get dvd::rip to read the contents of a DVD?

And according to the documentation for Handbrake, it is NOT a ripper.

Go to "File" and select "New Project".

Locator,

Thanks for trying out dvdrip and handbrake but it is really NOT VectorLinux's responsibilities to prepare or update documentation for other applications. You have to refer to the author of the application for it. Sorry I cannot help you much here...

I think k9copy, which was already mentioned previously is the better pick for ease of use. Though many of the others seem rather simple as well.
The VectorLinux community, nor the Developers are responsible for teaching you how to use these applications or "rip" a dvd. Each application has it's own web sight and documentation and probably a bit more. If that is not enough, there are TONS of other web sites out there that do provide such information.

If an application does not work as it is intended to, please feel free to report it here on the forums for the packagers and developers to take a look at. If you're looking to be schooled on how to rip a DVD or any other medium, maybe the lounge is a good place to try your luck, or some other web sites.

This thread has offered many good replies with information which requires you to read in some cases. Go read!

Additionally,
I will probably lock this thread to save the helping community from headaches which aren't necessary. I advise to travel wisely and respectable.

Cheers...
