Title: No sound on the WWW (solved)
Post by: Lyn on December 28, 2012, 02:23:38 pm
Hi there, recently installed velocity on my new computer, however I have no sound via any web browser at a sound enabled site.... for example flash plays (extensively tested youtube) but no sound, Likewise the BBC iPlayer.   If I download something from you tube and play it locally we have sound.   I can play CDs (with sound) and also DVDs with sound.  My audi chip is a HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic.  Any clues?

I used the latest one in the 64bit repository... no joy

Checking on the Adobe site I have flash 11.2.202.258 installed, which is their latest version

I know, I know.. But gotta ask anyway. You checked the appropriate channels in alsamixer?

Now that is an interesting thing, I have multiple options and  I have turned up all full and selected all channels.

Yeah, besides reinstalling the flash-plugin, and checking volume levels via a mixer (maybe the PCM level is important, I'm not sure), I don't know what to suggest.  Perhaps checking to see if alsa-oss is installed on your machine will help.  Perhaps running "alsaconf" as root will work, assuming that this command still exists (I think it's in the "alsa-utils" package).

No joy on any of those - its not as if I don't have sound, just on on flash or other systems via the www.

Lyn, what browser? Is the appropriate mime setting correct?

Hmmm. Grasping at straws here. Is port 1935 blocked? Flash uses that to communicate with the client.

Now how do I check that?

Disable any and all firewalls as a test. If sound works, we'll go from there.

firewall disabled, no difference.

as a matter of interest with live distros I get very mixed results, some can't cope with my graphics card and most can't produce sounds on the interenet with this computer.... most frustrating.

It's that old?  ???  What are you using?

disclaimer:  I'm truly shooting in the dark here.  Consider the following post as brainstorming.

How many soundcards do you have?  Is there an onboard along with another (perhaps) PCI soundcard?  If so, and if it's the PCI one that you wish to use, then try the bios and make sure the onboard one is disabled.  I think a list of cards recognized on your computer can be found in /proc/asound/cards.

Also, is libao installed?  Perhaps you have some conflict between arts, esd, alsa, and/or oss.

lyn:$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfef44000 irq 42
 1 [Generic_1      ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfef40000 irq 16

Interesting, looks like two but there is actually only one on board one.

And yes libao is installed.

There was a discussion about sound issues that can come up when certain usb audio devices were being used at this site here (http://osdir.com/ml/debian-user-debian/2009-04/msg01684.html), relating to the assignment of cards.  Perhaps a tip or two can be gleaned from it.

Interesting, I think there are more general issues with this machine.... may get an nvidia graphics card and a separate sound card, see if that makes a difference.

Downloaded Slax - same issues when running in live mode.   Interestingly the the sound icon is grayed out.

try opening or creating ~/.asoundrc

put this inside:
Code: [Select]
pcm.pulse { type pulse }
ctl.pulse { type pulse }
pcm.!default { type pulse }
ctl.!default { type pulse }

done, created a text file and saved as .asoundrc and put in the root of my home.  Is this correct, what next?

LOL very very tempting!  I am wondering if it the combined graphic/cpu that is the issue, perhaps getting an nvidia graphics card might help (I know I am grasping at straws here).

The plot thickens, when running a live cd of the latest Mint I get sound on youtube.... next step is to install it and see if it still works (though I am slightly wary as Grub doesn't always pick up other Linuxs installed (so a quick back up and a look at adding grub entries would be useful! )

If it does work what do you suggest I make a note of?

Lyn, the issue I've found with GRUB not picking up other installations depends on whether you're installing a 32-bit or 64-bit system. It's been my experience that GRUB for 32-bit distros tends to ignore any 64-bit installation.

OK installed a 64bit version of mint and all is working as expected, I have sound when using the www....  Flash etc This proves that its not the hardware that is a problem its the software (and its configuration).   Now what configuration files do I need to look at to replicate on Vector - so that I can get sound working in my Vector install....  Sound also works in Manjaro live 64 bit version.... an Arch Linux based distro.

Any idea of what config files I should be looking at to resolve the no sound on web pages issues?  Now that I have a distro where I have it all working what should I copy to my vector installation?

Hi
Have you read this already

http://dallarosa.tumblr.com/post/19626256742/fixing-no-sound-in-browser-problem-on-linux

 I think you are almost there..0 HD-Audio Generic would be the hdmi port, you already added .asoundrc but there is another step..setting the default devcie

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, that worked....

Added

pcm.!default {
   type hw
   card 1

ctl.!default {
   type hw

I searched the internet and couldn't find that page, I suspect quite a few people with have this issue so I think if we could make the solution "sticky" then that might help others....and thank you again for this.
