Title: beta testing veclinux-7.1
Post by: vector on March 23, 2013, 12:09:04 am
Hello all, we have entered phase two of our beta testing (meaning we are really close to an official beta release) all testing should concentrate on our latest release link here:
http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/VL-7.1-STD-B0.17.iso
http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/VL64-7.1-STD-B0.17.iso
Please report any issues you find with installer or the resulting install. The links above are for 32bit and 64 bit installations your choice.

Cheers,
Vec

no feedback = no improvement so be vocal here please

VL64-7.1 B0.17

Flawless install.

One item I'd like to see with the installer. I prefer to install the ISO from the hard drive instead of the CD/DVD. The installer detects the ISO, but it doesn't tell me where it found it. So in this case, I copied the B0.17 ISO to root and the installer showed me two copies but didn't say where they were located.

Still having issues with Network Manager. It asks for the password and accepts, but I'm still having to input the IP address of the router in the Additional DNS Servers block for wireless. If I don't input the router IP, I can browse to IP addresses, but the system won't resolve URLs.

Still seeing graphics issues on mouseovers. I'll monkey with a few screen resolutions to see if it's something related to that.

VL64-7.1-STD-B0.17.iso / Virtualbox 4.2.6 r82870 - dual core 3G ram VM:

Automatic: pauses on initial partitioning. System remains responsive, showing no activity. Shuts down from menu.

Advanced, using existing partitions, check all install options:
pauses on "Creating users".
reboot ok from menu.
all 99's on next start.
boot from CD gets me to maintenance login only; fsck: WARNING: couldn't open /etc/fstab: No such file or directory
boot from CD, drop to shell and mount drive. Basic file system tree is there.

Text install:
completes without complaints.
second reboot brings up gdm. No response to mouse or keyboard input, nor VB commands "insert ctrl-alt-del/backspace".
boot to text mode okay.
using "startx" renders system unresponsive again. No hdd nor cpu activity noted.

I will leave the VM in this state for a while, if anyone have suggestions to try.

Test two: VL64-7.1-STD-B0.17.iso burned to disc, install on Intel Core 2, 1.8 GHz, 2G ram, ps/2 input devices:

About the same result as in the virtual machine, bringing up X leaves it almost unresponsive.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 does nothing, but it responds to power button and initiates shutdown.
Also, "Ctrl+Alt+ SysReq - r -e" brings me to text login.

Aside for the things I've already mentioned, haven't run into any issues with this release. Even spent a couple of hours doing some gaming.

Just attempted to install B17:
1. Burned cd
2. Restarted with cd in tray.
3. Listed sources but didn't say where they were.  It did list two "Vlocity Linux 7.1 STD B0.17".  ( I thought Vlocity was the 64 bit one - was sure I dl'd 32 bit will try again later.  continued with first listed one.
4. Chose Automatic.
5. Listed my disks.  "Data in the disk will be overwritten".  STOPPED right there as this would have gone to sda1.  VL6, Data, and ISOs are in other partitions on this disk and I wasn't going to lose them!

Will download again and make sure I got the 32 bit one this time.

Bruce

Edit:  The name is correct for 32 bit.  Will see if any response before trying again.

Interesting.. both of my installs have no networking. The VM uses an Intel Gigabit device, and the real machine a Realtek 8136.

Update: I can load the module for the NIC (e1000 and r8169) and get the network up.

Tried startx with fluxbox, still no mouse/kb.

Installed from USB stick.

Clicked enter for GUI installer, however, it switched to TUI installer which I
prefer anyhow. All went mooth except no detection of sound card.

In X no keyboard and mouse.

Switched to root console with inittab set to 2. No mouse since there is no /dev/mouse.
Changed in /etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux.
Run it, now mouse on console still none in X.

Tried all possibilities offered in vxconf, nothing doing no KB or mouse in X.

I think I see a trend here.. text installer completes without errors, but leaves machine in this unresponsive state.

The installs I have got to work have all been done using the gui installer, even though it did not complete all the steps.

Still having intermittent stability issues with this kernel. B0.2 remains the most stable version with the 3.40 kernel for me. (At least I think it's .2. I've done so many installs, I forget what's installed where.  ;D )

can you post "uname -rm" from that install?

My bad. It's B0.13.

And it is 3.2.39

Crap. That means I got rid of one I didn't mean to get rid of. **banging head on desk**

B0.13 is pretty stable, too. Don't think I've crashed once with it.

Edit -- I spoke too soon. After I posted this, I went out to play with the dogs. When I came back in, the screen had locked up. Could move the mouse around, but that was it.

Zeroing in something.. tried 32 bit VL-7.1-STD-B0.17.iso,

First install: GUI, automatic. It stopped at "creating users". Let it sit for several minutes to make sure it was not going any further, then rebooted from the "hidden" menu. Upon restart it brought me to gdm where I could log in as root without a password. System runs fine. :)

Second install: Text installer, completed without complaints. Upon reboot X does not respond to inputs but cli works, network down, just like 64-bit.  >:(

network down, just like 64-bit.  >:(

Try going in to Network Manager and input the IP address of your router into the Additional DNS block.
Title: Re: beta testing veclinux-7.1
Post by: nightflier on March 26, 2013, 01:25:20 pm
System in question is in a state where X does not respond to inputs. The install is borked.

I can work from command line, load the module for the nic and configure network manually, but that doesn't really matter.

Progress: I have a working VL 64-7.1 B0.17 installation on real hardware.
Found three fairly predictable scenarios:

1: Text installer: Completes without errors but leaves X unresponsive. System partially usable, cli only.

2: GUI installer, using existing partitions: Installation dies at "creating users". Reboot to a corrupted file system, maintenance login only. System unusable.

3: GUI installer, install on a hard disk with no existing partitions: Installation dies at "creating users". Reboot and log in as root without password, to a functional system.

Made another install, this time using vinstall-iso-ng. Went smooth until asked
for time zone. Keyboard did not work and no scrolling. Rebooted into VL-7.1
and ended in login. Logged in as root w/o password. Started X and KB/mouse working. :D
Unable to get network configured and connection. Interface flags, no such device.
With vasm did some configuring and something hang. Mouse could move,
however, no clicks. Got out with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
Tried alsaconfig and got error:
Code: [Select]
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 538: 28350 Hangup                  $DIALOG --msgbox "$msg" 20 63

Rebooted, now mouse would not work in console and not anymore in X
neither the KB.  :(

Question. Is there a specific reason why we're sticking with the 3.2 kernel tree? 3.8.4 is the latest stable release, and 3.4.37 is the latest long term release (yes, I know there's a 3.2.42 long term release). Is there that much of a difference between the 3 branches?

we had a lot of problems with 3.4 early on. We are trying 3.4.37 in B.0.18 it is much better so far.

3: see #2

Guilty. On 32-bit vm, tried 6 char instead of my lazy testing single char, and voila! One perfect gui install.   :D

Installed B0.18 (64-bit)

Appears that the video issues are gone. YAY!

Network Manager still needs router IP in "Additional DNS Servers" (wireless connection).

Copied two music folders from another partition. No crashie crashie.

I think we're on the right track with this one! WOOHOO!

Still getting no suitable plugins found for Exaile. Same error for .m4a and .mp3 files.

Using the mouse wheel to adjust the volume still results in a Mixer crash.

Did some more testing of GUI installer on 64-bit systems, vm and real hardware:
With usernames and passwords 6 characters long, install no longer hangs at "creating users". It continues to where you reboot, and system comes up as it should.

Installed B0-18 with vinstall.

I am now as user in X and mouse/keyboard working. Connected to internet w/o my doing. Sound card found w/o my doing, alsamixer up.

Unable to play an audio CD. Gnome-player says
Code: [Select]
in media state change with state = 0
when trying to play.  Umplayer and exaile both not responding as well.

Code: [Select]
$ eject
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device

DVD playing well with Umplayer. Unlike  with audio CD no icon shows on desktop when DVD is loaded.

Made another install with vinstall-iso-ng.

This time I did no vasm configs in X like adding a user  or changing root
password. Instead I stayed in root console and did vasm there. So far so
good survived 3 (now 4) reboots and logins as user. Internet, sound card working
as well as mouse and KB.

Installed B0.19 (64-bit)

Flawless install.

Still running into the issue where dhcpcd.conf isn't being written.

Mixer still crashing when trying to adjust volume with mouse wheel.

No suitable plugins found error still with Exaile. (.m4a and .mp3 files)

Will put this one through its paces later today.

Edit -- Almost forgot. During the install process, GRUB isn't picking up all the OSs on the system. It tends to ignore the SOHO installation which resides on /dev/sdb1. Running grub-mkconfig picks it up, but it SHOULD detect it during install. Happened on B0.18 as well.

B0-19

It is now very clear that the problems I get is due to alsaconf in vasm-legacy while in X.

Installation and first boot smooth. Internet connected and sound card found.
Mouse working in console.

Startx opens Xfce4. All working correctly.

Opening vasm-lagacy, trying to start alsa sound vasm-legacy crashes.

After that mouse can be moved, however, not clicked.
Get out to console with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

Reboot

No mouse in console, no Internet connection, no soundcard found.
Starting X no mouse/keyboard.

I can only solve it by reinstalling and not touching vasm-legacy-alsaconf while in X.

BTW audio CD does now play with umplayer and gnome-mplayer.

Mixer still crashing when trying to adjust volume with mouse wheel.

I tracked this down to this: xfce4 -mixer crashes if you dont run the configuration tool (right click, properties) and pick your soundcard, etc.
Even if it looks like the default settings are alright you need to get to the dropdown and select a card.
There is some talk at the xfce4 mailing list about some patches for this issue, I will stay alert.
Let me know if doing this dance fixes it for you or you are facing a different bug.
Regards, Rodrigo

xfce4 -mixer crashes if you dont run the configuration tool (right click, properties) and pick your soundcard, etc.
I can confirm this. I was recently building my own xfce-4.10 packages (I build all the libs and apps as separate ones) and then started to use them. I thought: dang... xfce4-micer still crashes!!! Then I realized that after configuring it, no more crashes... ;D

PS: FWIW, they should probably program in a call to the config window on first run...

there's other bugs for VL64-7.1-STD-B0.37 installer as well.
installer can't distinguish samsung syncmaster  920nw lcd well, which should be working at 1440x900 resolution  in standard...when installing with sync master series of lcd, installer keeps flashing, thenshut off, have to press  switch on  every 2 minutes.....even chosing auto install,
once booting into
vl64  7.1 037 ,it can't  load graphic driver for  intel G41   chipsets, then xvconf  can only configure it work as vesa, still samsung syncmaster 920nw  can't be able to work at standard 1440x900.... which s old bugs for xorg, addressed many times since 2010 but still didn't put fix in xorg yet...mandriva does have good support to syncmaster lcd./

Burned DVD. Tried to install from with GUI. It does not go Forward when a partition is
assigened as root no matter if set to format or not.to format

Tried TUI installer. Same after assigning a partition as root and clicking on Next
it jumps out to console as root.

Tried good old Setup and it will not find the CD.

Might try vinstall-iso-ng tomorrow.

./packages/*/*.txz. It showed some packages were not installed, therefore,
coud not be upgraded. Cancelled it and run instead installpkg.

Rebooted. This time no error messages, however, it did not go into init 4.
See below Error.

Started xfce4. It opened, however, the language beside the icons looks
like a pile-up of sanscrit, uintelligent.

echo $LANG gives enUS

No program could be opened not even xterm.

Tried to start fluxbox, failed since setting in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.kde
instead of xinitrc.fluxbox.

Changed it and coud open fluxbox. Could open a terminal. Commands
opened some progams like exaile or abiword.
Firefox failed:$ firefox

So for sure the GUI Installer did not load all packages even given to FULL.

Question:

How do I change the language characters in Xfce4 to English?
