Title: VectorLinux 7.1 official beta (almost)
Post by: vector on September 18, 2013, 12:08:33 am
Hi Everyone,
Well at long last we are ready to do our first public release of VL-7.1 beta. We just released on Monday build #45 of our prebeta testing iso's and it turned out pretty damn good. There are two minor glitches, we still have a desktop folder showing on the desktop of the user account for the 32 bit build not sure on 64 bit maybe someone can clarify? The cups web interface if used will throw an error saying no htmlview present this was due to a missing dependency with the cups build (xdg-utils) that is fixed now and will not be present in the official beta release. My testing shows most everything else in working order and performance is top notch with the 3.10.12 kernel (thanks to Uel for keeping up with the constant kernel releases!!) I Would like everyone to take our #45 release for a test run to see if there are any other fixes to be done before we go beta  and report back via this Vector forum topic. Thanks to all the developers who have spent so many countless hours on this release and thanks to you testers for letting us know how we are doing. You can find the #45 release iso's here:
 http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/

Looking forward to hearing from everyone and thanks in advance for testing!!

Cheers,
Vec

Just in case anyone wants to try cups for printing the fix is pretty easy open /usr/share/applications/cups.desktop in an editor and replace htmlview with xdg-open or even firefox will work.

Cheers,
Vec

Yeah, Desktop folder is showing in the 64-bit version as well. Be nice to knock that CPU bug out of the park, too. ;)

I can see the Desktop directory in the actual Desktop in 64-bit

vcpufreq still crashes from the menu.  This should either be addressed or the app removed (unless people still use this)

I use it.  And it's working well for me. Not crashing at all.

I am still downloading B0-45, it says for 17 hours. I assume there is water
in the providers system or is it at VL. :P

Anyhow, I installed the kernel-3.10.12 in B0-44 64bit and sound
is subdued as what I have noticed with kernels starting 3.9.up.
I have to turn the volume up a few notches for same volume as I get
with kernel-3.7 and lower.

Has anybody the same experience?

That is the case as well in other slacky distros. Whenever I change to the
new kernels volume is subdued. All volume controls are the same 100%.

B0-45 32bit

claws-mail still hangs when trying to change preferences.

vcpufreq Type mismatch: wanted integer get string instead. Utils.?.0

Only one CPU showing on dual-core.

Sound subdued

New Login in a Window: kind of blank. No letters when typing user name.

New Login: ends with screensaver locked. After entering password crash to xfce4.

I'm noticing some instability with this version. Have experienced numerous lockups and other "strangeness".  I'll keep playing with it and see if I can nail down some causes.

I installed 64-45 a couple of hours ago on my backup laptop (a lenovo N586).  The installer is beautiful.  A work of art.  I put 7.1 in / and did not format /home.  Can see all my files.  Pretty slick I say.  Pretty slick.  Lyx installed from repository.  Am now downloading texlive.  Wondering whether to go to bother to install dolphin.  I sure like that file manager but its a lot of trouble to install.  So far everything I have tried works.    Fn F6 (rather than Fn F4) turns off the keypad.

This is my first venture with 64 bit Vector.  I see two penguins on startup.  Can't think of anything else right now.  Texlive sure takes its time downloading.  Texlive prefers that it not be installed as root, but VL seems to require that it be loaded as root.  Don't suppose it matters much.

And congrats, Suspend and Shutdown are finally working! :D

Interesting results here, installs fine, but some issues. This is the 64bit version

Onboard Nvidia graphics card, running with no xorg - and firefox locks the computer giving me a screen that suggests it can't run the graphics.  Installed seamonkey and the same thing happens.  Installed dillo and runs fine.  Installed Midori and it will not launch, from a terminal I get an error message, error while loading shared libraries: libzeitgeist-1.0.so.1 cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

No other programs seem to do this.

Note this is a fresh install with no other distribution and no other repositories added other than those that were loaded when I installed fresh.

Texlive installed fine to my Lenovo backup laptop, so lyx works great!  On that same machine I did not have Lyn's problem with seamonkey, which seems to run fine.  Etm also installed (from the etm - duke university site) but see next sentence.

I need to copy my files from my Samsung running 7.0  to the Lenovo backup laptop. I use grsync on my main (Samsung) machine to save to an external hard drive.  Do this every Sunday night.  Works fine.  But I can't find the grsync backup tool (root).  It is apparently not in the 7.1 respository.  So I don't know how to get that info from the external hard drive onto the Lenovo.

Title: IDE cdrom abnormally locked always
Post by: vincent2 on September 22, 2013, 06:40:09 pm
running  vl7.1  45 beta 64bit on gygabyte G41mt-s2pt,intel g41 chipset based MB still, strangely IIDE cdrom 're locked ,  press cdrom button  still can't open it to load cdrom......
always have to reboot the PC, load cdrom disc before its booting into vl7.1, then can see the cdrom content by typing "mount /dev/sr0  /mnt/cdrom".........

umplayer still can't play vcd or  music cd normally, even configure cd drive as /mnt/cdrom, umplayer doesn' recognize ........

how should fix it?

VL7.1 bo45 32bit

grip - created an mp3 file for testing, mp3 plays with um, gm and xmms via right click

no sound from exaile ( right click .mp3 play with) although it appears to be playing and gives track info.

um player does not play cd from open/audio cd.. although I set cd and dvd as /dev/sr0 in devices. dvd plays from open/dvd from drive.

notice in recent list- cdda://1 and dvd://1//dev/sr0

my canoscan n67ou usb scanner works with xsane

adding:
I have been finding my stark desktop very easy to use and will keep using it but decided to add another user which gave me the default desktop back.

when I double click the vector icons I get an untrusted application launcher error with option to - launch anyway or mark executable, also cancel. which option do I choose? I then got a launch error, failed to run docs.desktop

log out and switch user seems to work

edit: exaile required /preferances/playback/audio sink change to alsa from automatic to play.

VL64-7.1-B0.45
Pentium Dual Core 1.8 GHz, 2G RAM, Intel 945 mobo with integrated video.

Automatic install created 1G swap and left 4G unallocated.
You need swap equal to or greater than RAM for hibernation, don't you?

Thunar: Icons for Networking folder seem to be just defaults (1's and 0's).
Desktop launchers need to be set to executable to work properly.

Suspend or Hibernate only disconnects networking for a few seconds, then returns to normal operations.

EDIT: Just adding a few more observations:
If I shut down or reboot from command line, X will not start until next reboot.
Shut down will not power off machine.
Hibernate command complains about no configuration file, and "no suspend methods found".

On first booting X crashed to login screen every time I tried to open an application.
Stopped on subsequent booting.

Might have tried by now all applications. Few bugs remain as reported:

-- Hang in claws-mail

-- System>New Login in a Window, not working

-- System>New Login, opens locked xscreensaver, after entering password crashes back to xfce4 desktop

-- vcpufreq not working

-- Epson LQ300 printer not detected.

Need to do more testing, but I've run into issues with leafpad as well. Specifically with the saving of files and its ability to be read on other OSs.

Leafpad has been an issue for me, no consistent saves with garbled text. I have posted pics on the previous thread. actually I posted on the previous page from leafpad with the garbled text. If I click edit on the post it sits loading until I am tired of waiting.

Is there a problem with leafpad

Think so. On several occasions, it corrupted a file when saving. File will no longer open in Leafpad, but Abiword will, revealing junk characters on first line.

Post by: M0E-lnx on September 25, 2013, 11:20:08 am
I just updated leafpad to 0.8.18.1 in 7.1.  Available from untested.  Try that and let me know if the problems persist.
Build logs = http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/buildbot/builders/leafpad/builds/6

The gedit problem is a bit more complex.  Seems to be related to dbus, and something that has been showing up in different environments for quite some time.  Not sure what to do on that one.

http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=17875.msg98564#new

only other issue while customizing was the bar periodically highlights sections or an icon disappears and a click on the desktop seems to correct it, perhaps the video card?

I have been wondering all the while if the crash/hang I experience with claws-mail is not caused by some themes.
It was the case in one distro box with brasero.
I tried a few themes, all did hang/crash claws-mail.

BTW I got the muzzled sound solved in a a way. See my post under Technical General  - Muzzled Sound.

Post by: roarde on September 27, 2013, 01:31:58 pm
Actually, this deserves a word or two. But as I'm the one posting, you can count on more than two :P

3.10 series being LTS means "Long Term Support" from kernel.org. So complete support for the 3.11 series will probably stop before support for 3.10 does. That's why it's a better choice for default kernel for a distro release.

If you want a newer kernel after installation, have no doubt that those kernels will be available just as they've always been.

I just can't do two words, but I can say it in five:
Intelligent choice with other options.

I grabbed an old 80G HDD and did some testing on my main i7 Ivy Bridge machine.

VL64 B0.45, manual partitioning, full install. No problems with install. Hardware works except a weird issue with the USB mouse; it seems to go to sleep. I have to wake it up by clicking a button, then it works for a few minutes at the time.

VL 32 bit B0.45: Not so good. Mouse does not work at all. Neither does the network card. Using vasm-legacy to install boot loader only gives LILO as an option.

Boot times seem to be longer than I've come to expect from VL. Did some testing with a stopwatch and the results seem to confirm my suspicions. I timed it from hitting "enter" at the boot loader selection, to the login screen, three tests for all installations.

VL 64-bit: 34 seconds
VL 32-bit: 39 seconds
Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit nightly build: 26 seconds.

The default icon set is Faenza cupertino (very nice), However, the icon for nm-signal in status folder for faenza Dark (signal strenght) is silver and more in keeping with the volume icon and general appearance. Is it possible to move these icons so they are included as default?.

Edit: On further inspection the icon is not scalable so perhaps not functioning correctly and already intended to be silver as it appears in the icon folders

From settings manager/ appearance/ icons the signal strength icon is only silver when Faenza-Dark is selected and is not scalable.

adding: By editing icon.theme and "#" Inherits=Faenza, gnome, hicolor and removing # from Inherits=Faenza-Dark,gnome,hicolor and logout/in. The icon appears silver but remains unscalable when panel is made larger. perhaps not a scalable icon

works for me

Don't know if this is problem or not,, but when rebooting into 64 version, VL insists that I name the new session.  This seems to be an unnecessary step in the loading process.

The icon appears silver but remains unscalable when panel is made larger. perhaps not a scalable icon

works for me

overthere,

the faenza-icon-theme pkg on 7.1 had been trim down by removing any icons files that is larger then 48 to reduce the pkg size...

Quote
# remove icons that is above 48 pixels to reduce size
for a in $TARBALLS; do
   #rm -r $PKG/usr/share/icons/$a/{extras,stock}
   rm -r $PKG/usr/share/icons/$a/*/{64,96,scalable}
done

Installed 7.1 Beta 1 this morning. There's an issue with the Grub installation at the end of the routine and the system just hangs. Shut things down manually and sure enough, Grub wasn't installed properly. Booted in manually and ran grub-mkconfig and grub-install.

CPU0 is still MIA as well.

once boot into vl7.1, go to vliloconf, grub2, make another new bootloader......

then boot into vl7.1 again, at first alsamixer went missing, then one more times, alsamixer came out normally

bo46 32 bit

Installed to sda3 via gui advanced, existing, lilo to partition

reboot kicks disc, reboot via partition manager to sda3

very easy install, connect to wireless, create additional user

shut down, reboot, logins/outs

desktop folder no longer on desktop

leafpad appears to save 6/6

*/root folder remains on lower panel.

from previous notes - marble via gslapt crashes with current theme, works with simple gtkrc theme

gnubg no icon on menus, etc

keeps gettin better :)

may be worth adding the settings manager, pkg manager  to the favorites menu when you tweak the desktop

Repeated install of B0.47 on Ivy Bridge machine. Not much change from B0.45.

A little more info: On 64-bit the pointing devices still go to sleep after 2 or 3 seconds. Optical mouse needs a click, but on an optical trackball wakes up if I move it around some.

32-bit still no mouse. No eth0, but I did see repeated entries in /var/log/messages about it coming up.

Hi Roy,

Try:

Code: [Select]
echo on > /sys/bus/usb/devices/usbX/power/control
Where "usbX" is your usb port (usb1, usb2, etc.)
I know this is not an optimal solution but if it works at least we have a clue :)

perhaps not as important just now but

Find that moving the mouse wheel on the desktop switches desktops, unchecking the box in switcher preferences is only effective when the pointer is on the switcher.

Edit: Solved, sorry there is also a check in tweaks

was happy to discover sweethome3d in the repository but only get a splash screen, which is better than the nothing I got when I tried the downloadable portable version from the web site on my VL7std install.

Three tests of B0.48 32-bit:

In Virtualbox no problems. Played with boot settings, found that not using an initrd cut the boot time by four seconds. Do I lose anything except the boot splash this way?

Custom box; VIA mobo, AMD CPU, nV graphics: Installed using B0.44 burned CD and .48 iso on USB stick: Install hung at "installing bootloader". Booted from CD and installed grub. Upon restart, no response to kb (ps/2), or mouse (USB), except Ctrl-Alt-SysReq, r, e did give me command line.

IBM Thinkcenter Intel P4 box, same peripherals as above; installed using B0.44 burned CD and .48 iso on USB stick: Install hung at "installing bootloader". Booted from CD and installed grub. Keyboard and mouse works, NIC does not.

reinstalled and choose lilo no issue.

The wifi notification is now silver but has a black background.
when I previously switched from inherits= Faenza, gnome, hicolor (which was black) to = faenza-Dark,gnome, hicolor I got silver but no background. must have been getting the notification-gsm-x-.png. which matches the volume.I though it must have been nm-signal as it was also silver

you can see the better match here

added the foum as a button replacing the redundant close all window button as I am not using desktop icons here

added the optional menu tag as some may need it. just the button looks better personally

I was looking at this icon that matches the volume

I deleted all the nm ones hopeing it may default but not.

The icon themes from xfce-look are about as usefull as the style themes, NOT

Rodrigo, if there is a way to mess something up, count on me to find it. I suspected that the install method could affect the process, that's why I specified how I did it. ;D

With this in mind, I tried using VL64 B0.48 ISO and unetbootin to create a bootable USB stick. It booted to command line only. Trying "install" for text installer resulted in "image not found". Oh well, booted into 32-bit .48 (with Vector's new kernel) and used Brasero to burn a CD of 64-bit.

Burned VL64 B0.48 CD booted and installed without problems, for both GUI and text installer. This on my Ivy Bridge box.

Once up and running I tried some customizations. Changing desktop appearance works, hello Clearlooks!  :)

Changing desktop background did not work as expected. I could change the wallpaper, but selecting "none" and specifying only a solid color resulted in a black desktop with no icons, and system instability. Right-clicking desktop did nothing. Took well over a minute to log out. Created new user and tried again, same result. Best I could come up with was to create an image of the solid color I wanted and set that as background.

Next I wanted to install the nvidia driver. Could not find kernel-src for 3.10.14 in vl repo. Downloaded source from kernel.org instead. Uninstalling nouveau using gslapt did not disable the module, though the Nvidia installer did detect and disable it. Still, I could not get the module to build, it complained about missing info in some .h source files and I didn't feel like pursuing it any further. Will try again when our own source package becomes available.

Couple of comments on loading bo-48 tonight. (64 bit)

The first screen still says VL 7.0 rather than 7.1

At the "choose where lilo is installed" (paraphrasing) screen, no suggestions are expressly made, though there the box comes filed out with, I believe, the home partition.  Anyway, using the advanced install (so I would not reformat my home partition), at first I tried to install lilo in root partition.  Computer wouldn't boot.  So I reinstalled with the default partition for lilo and it now loads fine. I did this on a lenovo laptop, about a year old.

I am not looking forward to reinstalling texlive.  So I think I will have to wait a while before I can use lyx.  Just a backup machine anyway.

bo49 32bit

gui, advanced, existing, sda3

grub2 to sda3 still hangs at end of install not offering completion

lilo works fine, perhaps to mbr of drive is required by grub and I am unaware, lilo is default

At end of install did Not kick out cd prior to/during reboot

login/out user/root, create new user, shut down, boot..looks ok

add: same issue with background "none" as previous.. when finally log out, login as root to delete user but delete user failed

add: can create and delete new users but if none is selected as background that user can not be deleted and desktop not usable

add: after reboot, user can be deleted

Installed the 64 bit version 49 of 7.1 on my Lenovo N586.  Pretty.  I rebooted to set machine and set time in bios to local. VL7.1 hung up on next reboot.  Forced power-off and it rebooted fine second time. And third time.

Wireless does not work (doesn't see any signals).  Tried wicd and got dbus error.

Suspend, shutdown and reboot work.

Hi folks,
I have just attempted to install from 'http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/VL-7.1-BB-FINAL.iso' and hit a problem.

On booting from the CD and reaching the boot prompt I get:-
Loading kernel/sata
Could not find ramdrive image: init.lz

Entering 'gui' or 'install' made no difference. Entering 'linux root=/dev/sr0' did get the system to start but I ran into a kernel panic before I could get anywhere useful.

I should add that my drive setup is not a simple one. The mobo (Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5] has six SATA slots. These are set in the BIOS to behave as IDE. Of these only the first four are bootable. These slots are being used as follows:-
Slot 0: 1st hard drive - 1TB Seagate Barracuda
Slot 1: 2nd hard drive - 1TB Seagate Barracuda
Slot 2: 3rd hard drive- 1TB Seagate Barracuda
These first three hard drives are configured as a RAID5 software array using  'md'. This is my working system and so cannot be touched (Debian Wheezy).
Slot 3: Optical drive. LG BlueRay writer
This is the drive the installation was being attempted from.
Slot 4: 4th hard drive - 1TB Seagate Barracuda
The fourth hard drive is being used normally and was to be the installation target.
Slot 5: free
There is also an IDE controller which has a DVD writer attached, This is proving unreliable so I do not use it to install from.

There is also a 4-slot memory card reader attached via USB which has been known to cause confusion with drive letter assignments. 'lsusb' reports 'Neodio Techologies ND3050'.

Any tests I might carry out to help diagnosis?
Cheers, Kimdino

It is very simple.  That ISO you downloaded is not meant for your typical installation.  That is only the barebones (hence 'BB' in the file name) environment upon which we build the standard (STD) iso.
You should be trying the ISO's with 'STD' in their filename.

Isn't it about time for a beta?

If someone wants me to test some part of the new iso, let me know.  The stuff I have tried works fine.

hata_ph,

I tried it on the 64-49 on my Lenovo N586 and sound didn't work, but no big deal as sound doesn't work on anything..no sound on youtube. No sound on VLC. No sound on any CD. Everything looks like its playing, loads fine etc but no sound onboard nor through my logitech usb headset.

I tried fooling with alsamixer, changing sound cards etc, but no luck.  I might have a firmware problem.

I don't know how to find answer to your question.

However, when I first bought this Lenovo N586 I posted the lspci, which can be found at http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=16905.0 (I was running VL 7.0).  It showed an audio device. I don't recall having sound problems then. Here is that old lspci:

I also note that whether I have pulse-audio start on boot or not makes no difference.  When I go to

sledgehammer,

I am not sure about your issue but then it might be due to firmware issue.

For the Mplayer issue, I have build MPlayer-1.1.1 to include alsa and other optional drivers. Someone might want to check out optional drivers as it may contain copyright drivers which maybe illegal in some country...

You're probably right, but it seems strange to me that I would have sound in 7.0 but no sound in 7.1.

Title: Re: VectorLinux 7.1 official beta (almost)
Post by: roarde on October 29, 2013, 10:46:17 am
Apparently it's a difference in name only. Looks like what was called an "Audio device" is now a "Multimedia controller".

ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa    Should be present and executable.

As for sound in 7 and not 7.1, the 7.1 Mplayer build didn't contain alsa output at first. Would you be kind enough to try the newer, alsa-enabled version and let us know?

To all:
The advice hata_ph asked for on the legality of certain drivers is important, but nearly impossible for one person in one place to figure out. Please lend a hand if you can.

If one person could install the newest mplayer package then cutpaste the output of "mplayer -ao help" here, that would give us a head start. (I'm stuck on 7.0 for a while, or I'd do it.)

mplayer -vo help may be helpful too. Keep in mind that the proprietary part may not be in mplayer, but only that mplayer can use it if it's there. Still, if you find something listed that might be an issue, please post back so that it can be sorted out.

@sledgehammer
See if running '/usr/sbin/alsaconf' as root is any help. It needs a terminal, either linux (textmode) or some kind of X-terminal. 'alsamixer' in a terminal should work after that, as should xfce's volume control.

Robert,

I installed the latest mplayer from the testing repository.  It would not run until I downloaded libvdpau.  Gnome mplayer then ran fine, but no sound.

B0.50 32-bit
Burned cd and also copied ISO to / of existing VL 7.0. Booted CD, chose the ISO as install source, asked for LILO to bootsector. Install hung at "Installing Bootloader".

Reboot, install from CD itself, LILO to bootsector. Also put in:
Username: joeuser                                    Edit: Mea culpa, I'm sorry. Posted this because I didn't think it might
Password: rootpass                                  matter what kind of characters, and these were just slightly
Admin password: rootpassword                            easier to type than the real ones, '12345678' and '1234567890'
I've used a mixture of alpha and num in the past, but never all alpha.
Password length might matter: never had fewer than 8 characters.
Yes, those are the actual entries[sic]. Did not install Xfce this run to save time. Install completed normally and reboot (after activating the partition, of course) was normal.

On login, chose fluxbox (tested all, doesn't matter), put in "root" for user, "rootpass" for password. Now logged in as root. Log out. Log in as "joeuser" "rootpassword". Also worked, as did using the "correct" password for each one. I've mentioned this several times and the only feedback I've gotten is that the problem can't be duplicated. I don't buy that.

Issued "nm-applet" from xterm. No start, error message complained of not finding libgnome-keyring.so.0.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Reinstalled from CD just as above, except installed Xfce this time. Started a fluxbox session first (password problem still there) and issued 'nm-applet'. It started, icon appeared in tray, and after setting up hidden AP, it connected and worked. Apparently, installing Xfce is necessary for libgnome-keyring to be installed, configured, or accessed properly.

Started GSlapt, turned testing on. Reloading produced the error of "http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.1/patches (not found, invalid, something like that)". Viewed repo in browser. What should be in the patches/ directory is in the patches/patches directory. PACAKAGES.TXT was empty (as in "no patches yet"), so I allowed GSlapt to ignore that repo.

Installed Midori (latest version in repo unless untested has newer ones). Started from Terminal. Came up, but browser window displayed the message "please install glib-networking". Installed it. Restarted Midori. Didn't have enough time to give it a workout, but what I did worked fine.

Logout. Login to Xfce. No particular problems. Needs an easily-findable audio-volume applet. Sound did work, default volume was pretty good, and alsamixer worked fine from the menu. Just took a second to realize the window had to be stretched down to access the sliders.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Every 32-bit iso so far, including 50 (no idea on 64's):
Either input (mouse or keyboard) is extremely slow and irregular, or it's posting input feedback to the screen that's the problem. Either way, it makes using VL drearily miserable and totally unenjoyable. Since the problem shows even when it's the installer running during the install process, the unpredictable results of input can be downright dangerous. Only two clues to what the problem might be, both probably misleading but: 1) when display goes to framebuffer during boot, I see Tux twice. 2) Message "module drm/i810 does not support smp" and that module doesn't load.

I get the same problem in linux console after issuing 'init 2'. Problem might be very slightly decreased in text mode, or that may be my imagination. If there's actually a difference, it's a very, very small one.

Installing and running in this circumstance is just too depressing and aggravating. I've added the install to my normal bootloader. I'm willing to test and check whatever towards fixing this problem if asked to do so. I'll install an ISO designed to fix it if asked. Otherwise, no more installations for me until this issue is reported fixed; just too much time lost and such a joy killer.

Pls. do try Unetbootin to make image of iso to your usb pendrive,
then boot with that pendrive, should work fine wiith b0.50.

reboot kicks out cd..nice

creates ext3-71.12 gig, swap-975.61 meg, unallocated-3.45 gig (via gparted installed via gslapt after update)

smooth install, login/out as user and root, added additional user as root with vasm. login/out fluxbox..OK

same issue as nightflier posted and I confirmed in previous BO with solid color background choice.

reboot allows corrupt user to be deleted, replaced with new user

No volume on bar but easily added, root folder on lower user bar easily removed

media players not setup for use..um player has message box for smplayer with every open, could not play .avi, mp4 or dvd, etc with mplayer or umplayer(selected various drive options in preferences). previous bo49 did play media with some effort.

exaile played mp3 when alsa was selected in preferences.

wifi icon does not match volume after row size 30, no issue connecting to internet

will reinstall with advanced option

Just tried B0.50 in a 64-bit qemu virtual machine.
Installation went flawless using automatic mode.  I was unable to reproduce the user+passwords issue reported by roarde.
I did run into the same problem with midori as reported, so the package has been fixed and updated to the latest available version.  Build log here: http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/buildbot/builders/midori/builds/20

One minor little detail is that the 64-bit 7.1 ISO when booted, the message says "7.0".

Other than that, looks good to me, but bare in mind that my setup has no sound or real hardware for that matter, but on a VM it is nearly perfect.

Installed B0.50 (64-bit) yesterday. Flawless install.

CPU bug still present where CPU0 is MIA on boot.

Gnome mplayer doesn't work (never use it anyway).

UMplayer also doesn't work (never use it, either).

Exaile works very well.

bo50 32bit

Reinstalled selecting advanced and edited partitions then installed to first of two created partitions

equally easy install with logins/outs ok. attempted to use wrong passwords, root password for user, etc. but got the typical error for incorrect password.

@retired1af

update gslapt and then add libvdpau then try gmplayer..I was able to play dvd, avi and mp4 media samples with sound/full screen and actually works better than bo49.

Installed B0.50 in a 32-bit Virtual Machine.  The passwords issue is confirmed, and will be fixed on the next test ISO.

I have to say, that while I like the fact that whiskermenu is included by default, I hate the way the default desktop is configured.  I think we should be shipping a desktop as configured in the 64-bit edition accross the board, but use whiskermenu accross the board too.  Also, the bootsplash screens are way too different for a distro that's shipping both architectures... I would like to see more similarities in the end result for both architectures.

BO50 32 bit

added xfdesktop 4.10.2 and can now change to solid color, horizontal, vertical gradient background. turn on and off icons or switch to single image wallpaper. when chose list can add images to list which appear at random when item selected . not sure this is correct but better function than with the included 4.10.1 thus far.

The okular pdf reader may be a worth consideration as add on for the repository as it also reads ebooks and comics etc in addition to pdf. just a thought

loaded bo 51 64 on my paralegal's ibm desktop (over vector 7.0) and it loaded fine.  She had been complaining about difficulties in getting into the gui (she uses two monitors).  I used the advanced installer as I wanted to make sure it used the old partitions.  I forgot to tell VL 7.1 to NOT format the home drive but it didn't format the home drive anyway.  Apparently that's the default.  THANKS!  Thanks again.  And thanks a third time.

She loaded the kde stuff (like me, she likes Dolphin) and everything seems to be working great.  Her plan is to keep using bo 51 until 7.1 final comes out.

I tried the older cups program in the vl7.1 64 repository and that did not help.

Even though cups shows as running in the run level 4 services, when I click on cupsservice (paraphrasing) in vasm, it says that cups is NOT running and so I say to start it and then I get the error: check your cups installation or some such.  So she still can't print except  by putting file on dropbox so someone else can print it.

Other that this, she said it ran fine today.

B0.51 32-bit, installed without XFCE4:

Replaced network-manager with wicd. Looks like our package is affected by this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/993912

I applied the suggested hack to get it working:
Code: [Select]
/user/share/wicd/daemon/wicd-daemon.py:1067
change:
prop = misc.sanitize_config(prop)
to:
prop = misc.sanitize_config(str(prop))

Nightflier,

Srvset in vasm legacy shows cups running in user level 4

running cupsweb brings up a "cups is not running, launch it shall we?"

Saying "no" goes back to menu.

Saying "yes" brings up (Paraphrasing) "Sorry, cannot launch cups.  Check your installation"

Running your suggestion as root produces the following:

Quote
vector://home/nicole
root:# /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start
cups: started scheduler.                                   [  OK  ]

Thanks Nightflier.

It (http://localhost:631) worked, sort of.  I could install printers.  However, they did not install properly.  Our hp laserjet 6mp installed as a different hp printer. Print test page produced garbage.  And the big xerox copier (accessed via wireless), using the ppm which worked with 7.0, would just print an error code.

I think I jumped the gun here a bit so I am going to let her try something else for a while.

For what its worth, switching to 7.0 did not solve the problem with the HP printers. In fact it may have made things worse as nothing happens when printing from libreoffice writer....Test page from Cups (localhost:631) prints fine but it blows up when trying to access Cups through vasm.  However it (switching to 7.0) did solve the problem with wireless printing to the big Xerox copier. I supply my own ppd for that new very fast xerox printer as it does not show on the cups HP menu.

I have a linux expert coming in the office tomorrow to see what he can do about the HP laserjets and will report if anything interesting comes of it.

I don't see an "hplip" on VL 7.0, except in vasm/cups (add new printers) and I don't know what to put in the blanks after going past the first screen.

I've always used hplip for my HP printers.  It's where the official linux drivers for many printers went.

the Cups web interface is pretty straight forward, but hplip also has a tool to add printers.
There is also system-config-printer, which is another UI for cups.  I find them all pretty straight forward.

I downloaded VL64-7.1-STD-B1.iso, put it on a usb stick with unetbootin.  It would not install on my Lenovo N586, a fairly new machine with 500G hard drive.  In both automatic and expert it stopped at "Preparing package Install."  This contrasts with VL64-7.1-STD-B0.51.iso, which installed via unetbootin just fine on the same machine.  I will download it again, just in case it was a bad download, and report if that fixes it.

Speaking of automatic, I think the loader should explain what partitions it creates.

Happy Thanksgiving! What better way to start the day than testing out a new beta? So far I've done two installs in a vm and one on real hardware.

VL 7.1 B1 is a huge improvement over previous releases.
All CPUs are up and running.
Setting XFCE4 background to solid color works as intended.
Checking a single box during install disables boot splash, for those who prefer it that way.

BTW, a new download of B1 on a different usb stick didn't help.  I don't see a place to tell it which partition is boot.  Just guessing, but that might be the problem.  More likely its the video card in the Lenovo.

PLS SUGGESTED WHERE TO GET  THE MISSING VLILOCONF PKG?

Did n't find "menu.lst"  file under   /boot/grub   at all,  how to edit  grub booting menu manually?

additionally, inside Thunar , right clicking mouse  to txz file, enter password,  installpkg  couldn't install txz at all in fact....missing link.....

So, though I don't understand this md5sum business, as Vincent2 suggests, data is apparently corrupted.  However, I see no need to download it again.  I have done so twice without success.

Downloaded VL64-7.1-STD-B1.iso and got the same md5sum as sledgehammer.
Downloaded VL64-7.1-STD-B0.51toB1.delta and applied it to B0.51. Different result, it matches the official posted md5sum.
Does look like the B1 ISO file is corrupt.  :(

to save your precious time, better Download VL64-7.1-STD-B0.51toB1.delta, only 106M.

then go to console:

xdelta patch VL64-7.1-STD-B0.51toB1.delta

you'll get  VL64-7.1-STD-B1.iso in that directory...

if B1 ISO ( uploaded to  http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/iso/) file is corrupted,  do advise vector to upload correct iso again.

I loaded the full B1 and it loads and works fine, so far (I am writing this on it), except that I can't get the wireless to work.   I downloaded the latest broadcom file from gslapt which didn't help, nor did downgrading to an older broadcom-sta.  Nor did sourceforge's broadcom for slackware 13.37.

Made an install from DVD. Smooth to the end. Booted from USB stick
made wih pkgtool which I have come to like. No lilo or grub needed.

For a quick look, sound and Int. con. works. Played only one solitaire game.

More later.

VL7.1 B1 32bit

installed via dvd-rw, gui installer with enter, advanced, existing, no issues

no splash option check box..nice

wireless connection and enable wireless toggle no issues

screensaver does not engage while playing dvd..nice

xfdesktop updated..nice

added xfce timer plugin..nice to have

root folder still on panel but volume added..nice

just observations:

firewall is not enabled by default, should it be?

browse removable media when inserted is not default, should it be?

as previously noted epdf does not show images but evince2 works fine should evince replace epdf?

Gmplayer stop button- when playing audio cd pressing stop plays the playing track from the beginning and grays out options except play, which will pause when pressed and make- previous, play, stop and next available again.
plays other media fine so far

umplayer still has a nag screen with each open but plays sample media fine

gnubg and xmahjongg from the repository have no menu icons,
no issues with pkg manager search or installs

looking good

lyx 2.06, being the latest stable version (and in the 7.1 repository) does not seem to work right.  Gives a "bug" error when trying to change margins or deal with multiple indexes.  Same version of lyx is on 7.0 but without these problems.

But there are some other variables (downloading texlive, installing styles), so the lyx bugs might not be related to 7.1.  When time permits I will try another lyx project in 7.1 to make sure and report if I learn more.  However, right now, the most obvious cause is something in 7.1 64 bit.  Nonetheless, it seems to me that lyx should either run or not run.  And it runs well on 7.1 for most purposes.

Package installation from Thunar:
The problem is due to my overzealous removal of scripts from vasm-legacy. I plead that this aggressive removal helps identify what needs to be done before vasm-legacy is replaced with the forthcoming new vasm (which is on hold so this release can be concentrated on). The needed scripts have been returned. Unless you're using this feature, no real need, but updating vasm-legacy to the latest in untested solves this problem. That's the only change in the new version, so most should probably just wait for the next ISO. Thanks to overthere for catching this, I'dve missed it otherwise.

vliloconf missing:
This is also an omission from vasm-legacy, but for now it's intentional. There's still some discussion on how bootloader configuration will be done post-install. Some users, mostly new to VL, were having problems with the scripts in certain situations. So they're absent until the method is decided on and the scripts can be edited and returned. So yes, for now reconfiguring the bootloader will be done by manual edit of lilo or grub configuration. :(
Although this was an issue known in advance, THANKS TO VINCENT2 FOR REMINDING ME OF IT.

One more thing of note is missing from vasm-legacy right now. There's no means to "automatically" configure terminal keyboard, x-keyboard, and locale. The main problem with the previous scripts was the naming conflict between x-keyboard and terminal keyboard layouts for many locales. I think there's a way to do it all at once, smoothly. If I'm wrong, this ability will return to vasm-legacy anyway with an additional step to choose terminal keyboard separately from x-keyboard. Top of the list, but may take the longest.

Observations

when I right click a text file in thunar at the bottom of the pop up menu are 3 options to- print a file, spellcheck a text document, imagemagick an image.

Is the print file supposed to print the right clicked text file? I get 0 but do not have a printer attached..would be nice if it did

Is the spell check a text document supposed to spell check the right clicked file? I get 0...would be nice if it did

I like imagemagick as a menu item and it works but odd to right click a text file for it.

I can confirm the issue with claws mail, clicking configuration/preferances for current account and apply causes freeze.
appears to open a second instance of something.

however if you click configuration/edit accounts/edit, it opens the same configuration dialog and you can edit and apply and click ok and close the edit dialog box and close app.

B1 64-Bit on Ivy Bridge with Nvidia GT 240:

Login screen: poking around with the mouse causes it to go unresponsive after a few clicks. Mouse cursor keeps moving and I can switch to another virtual console and recover by going to init 2, then back to init 4.

Desktop launchers: The ones for Internet sites need to be set executable.
"Vector-Docs" takes you to VL home page, the title is a little misleading.
"Vector-Tutorials" goes to opensourcebistro which seems to be limping along after an "injection attack". Any idea if it will stay that way?

On this machine only, I am still experiencing that my pointing devices go to sleep after about a second of inactivity. This applies to 32-bit as well.

/etc/slackware-version shows 13.37. We're past that, right?

Seem like there is a bug for xfce4-terminal, it crash when you want to set the encoding...it happen on 7.1 B1 32&64bit for me

https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10412

This is not happening to me on Slackware 14.1 32 bit, with xfce4-terminal 0.6.2. Maybe we should look at their build setup for this as they may be applying a patch...

EDIT: Just checked and nope, no patches...

Lyx 2.0.6 crashes a lot.  Loads and looks normal, but on indexing, lyx says "you've found a bug in lyx."

No sound on built-in speakers (Lenovo N 586).  Did not try usb headset.

Same hear (Happy New Year!).

During 2014, let's keep in mind the Pope's warning that unfettered capitalism is another form of tyranny.  Private monopolies (Skype, etc) are the cancer of capitalism.  If so, we can begin to heal jobless North America and jobless world.

About Grub2 bug im having an generic issue of Grub2 not accepting to install on an ext2 filesystem.
Reading about it i have found that this seams to be for all extX systems therefore id like to know what i should use.
Theres more here> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=861192

Edit: 2
Some suggestions (without reading all previously made threads)

A minor typo in the beginning fo vs of.
I'm guessing there's more to come from the installer as-well but.
When choosing partitions perhaps there are ways of bringing options of mount-points along side.
Along with the possibility of typing what name you'd like to mount a partition under.
In the text-mode installer there might be a favor in making the [tab]-key work as a step by step.
An option to hide your password when typing it, might have some beneficial situations for a user / admin.
And an warning if caps-lock is activated.

An help-option page to view an or get a better understanding of what certain option does.
Like what can happen if i disable animations or let startup stay default, whats the diff. between simple and advanced. (Guiding the user abit.)
Some user-groups might be added by default like lp if cups are installed for example.
First-time messages could be a feature under the install-process and or when window-manager is up and running.
Such as /var/mail/root and welcome screen information.

Keyboard map doesn't persist when altered.
The drop-down-menu for a couple of things are marked at the bottom of the list.
And if any disorder in screen-placement during install are there, the key information might not be visible.
So what im suggesting is to still have scroll-lists but have the marker centered, and lists revolving around the marker instead.
During first boot-promt i can also see a couple of dandy improvements like [F1-F6] or so delivering lots of different good options.
Such as keyboard-setup/ language, screenresolution, text or gui-install, kernel-options-lists, etc.

Overall id say that the gui now has alot going for it, and being well executed. A wast difference compared to the old one.
I have installed three times in advance mode gui and text.

One other topic that i have seen a little bit of is documentation and PR for the distro, that i think could be executed abit better.
Here are some points>
One of the most used programs of any desktopOS has got to be the browser from my point of view.
Therefore, that seems to me one of the most important bits to tweak, yet its all factory.
Some things that are usually found in most distros are, support, distro-pages and all such type of things in a well structured bookmark collection.
And of course a homepage that's useful and potentially brings a donation / purchase if people are impressed. Eg. the startpage! vectorlinux.com
Themes are also nice in bringing the top-brand-browser into the look and feel of the rest of the desktop.
The default behavior of browser-configurations such as security, shortcuts, misc adaptation to make use of all installed software.

A support-icon instead of for example screen-shot in the top menu. Also in the top menu, root terminal and filemanager craches from not being started by gksu or equivalent. Another thought from all the icons on the desktop is to make an extra drawbar / applet to only revolve around all distro-features.
A thing that could stay visible at first start and then hide away with the rest.
Enhanced menu-tweaks to rightclick-menus and adoptions of klipper/glipper as an option to integrate along gdm for all applications.

And for tonight, my number one feature!
I would like to see more intelligence at my fingertips when working in the terminal. (The computer is supposed to do the major work.)
So i think its a very nice thing that someone wrote a couple of lines of common things that are used.
But there's also a major potential in developing that part in the distro.

For one of my major favorites are "APROPOS" and the main thing about that is.
You don't have to remember every command there is in your head, and if you come back from vacation its likely a nice usable little thing.
But say that you would like to know, how can i edit something in VL-term and you type "apropos edit", there will be Zero answers.
Instead of perhaps $" nano, kate, geany, vim, abiword, emacs, leafpad, kwrite, and so on.
And links to more resaults of howto edit> graphics, html or whatever is suitable.

Also by having a few examples for commonly used task in terminal for each command and suggestions for related.
There is a bunch of time-saving aspects there even for the professional user. (quick answer to what your probably looking for.)
So by making small use of stuff already available, one can enhance user experience alot.

And as for the last wish apropose, id consider making a contribute, if that's of any interest.

What is my best option otherwise?
Reiserfs, Brtfs, ....... (Brtfs is still unstable as ive come to know right?)

Edit, i have excluded both of these options so then ...... fat32 or.....

better format it as xfs or ext4, while xfs can cater large volume data well

Thanks but ext4 is not an option im afraid. (all ext fails)
And im quite puzzled by the fact that editing by hand is no problem.
But from root execution of the software there's only read permissions even if its really writable.

Im going to either add what i want manually or make use of a live disto or so to make it happen.
And after searching about XFS and most other they are not compatible with Grub.
Using ext3 or 4 is depending on use of course limited as well giving kerneloptions like noatime and so...
(One could switch of ext3-options but then again, stay native ext2 and not have to address anything.)

If i cant find whats wrong about it, there might be a value in the Vectorians knowing this might be an patchable issue.
And again thanks for replying... =)

when booting with install disk or iso image,
pls chose  advanced install, then chose using partition tool to creat partitions  installing, or you can chose using existing partition and then pls  configure oone of partition  as your " / '-xfs or ext4, another /home xfs  or ext4, another 4G  patitions as swap swap.

WHO TOLD YOU THAT "XFS and most other they are not compatible with Grub"? i'm using xfs now with grub without any problem.
of course ext3, 4 both work nicely, but after install, install kernel 3.12.2 to your system for better performance...

@vincent2 about XFS you are of course right about that.... Maybe i was abit tired last night sens i looked at some old garbage-pages!
Checking some reasonable places like xfs.org is again supporting this. Sorry about that.
I might have a go again today when my eyes aren't crossed! lol

Im currently using a dedicated /boot partition for grub2
And beta testing 7,1 with kernel 3.10.20 so if i was to cook another kernel for it.
The testing process would be more or less useless.... unless they plan on delivering 7,1 with 3.12.2 kernel.

you should make test install together with other linux fans in your community, then you can can discuss and figure out problem quickly...no cafe house in your area can offer you free gatherings   for vector linux?

once you installed vl7.1 64 bit beta 1.1, do download latest kernel 3.12.6 from vl test repo. and install

http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/x86_64/

.....then "vliloconf" from console as root, or directly edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, thus boot into 3.12.6....

but now vl7.1 64 bit beta 1.1's still buggy, no vliloconf available, it's missing still.

the idea to stay with. kernel 3.10. series, mainly  caters the those corny old users in north america who 's no plan to update their hardwares in 2014...in the age of 3G and 4G modem, they 're still stick to corny gigantic broadcom wifi  card.

Well i dont have an issue running 3.10x but there's benefits of getting support for hardware.
Although that has to be weighted against using stable trouble-free versions of the kernel that the developers have knowledge about.

About grub and XFS
Code: [Select]
root:# grub-install /dev/sda3
/usr/sbin/grub-bios-setup: error: hostdisk//dev/sda appears to contain a xfs filesystem which isn't known to reserve space for DOS-style boot.  Installing GRUB there could result in FILESYSTEM DESTRUCTION if valuable data is overwritten by grub-setup (--skip-fs-probe disables this check, use at your own risk).

Now i will test it and see how it goes.. Preview is failing at this code-insertion so here it goes anyway..

About Linux users, where im living there has most definitely been an increasing number of linux-users.
But very few organized events apart from in Stockholm, Linkoping and a couple of major citys.
And being inactive for few years i haven't followed up on those bits yet.
The number 1 forum in Sweden is more or less dead, where i am a moderator.
So im guessing that all the people hang around at ubuntu forums and similar..... (no spyware for me)

I just loaded 64 B2, using the automatic option. I hope to try hata_ph's sflphone tomorrow after I reload VL 7.1 as an "expert.".  Nonetheless, I report that 64 B2 automatic loaded fine on my Lenovo N586.  The graphics are excellent.

Some additional information is needed to assist in deciding whether to choose automatic or expert load options.  For example, the user should be told that on selecting the automatic option his drive will be formatted into one partition, plus a swap partition and that if he wants both a root and a  /home partition he needs to select the expert option.

And don't forget to change 7.0 to 7.1 on the initial screen before 7.1 goes beta.

And keep up the good work!

It is possible to run the new installer from a running system.
you can get the pkg here http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/x86/vinstall-0.1-i586-1vl71.txz
it should work on 7.0 or 7.1 x86 or x86_64
you need to have an iso in / or in the root of any partition or in the cdrom.
you can start it with "vsuper vinstall" as a reg user or "vinstall urwid" from a root terminal, I would like you  to try both.
Let us know how it goes.

This is weird. Ran into the same issue I ran into with B1.1.

Slapped the B1 CD into the drive and it detected B2 iso on /dev/sda. Started the install (format root, leave home intact) and let the install fly.

Upon reboot, only B2 is visible on the grub menu as if the grub OS prober didn't detect the other partitions or operating systems. Once logged in, I'm able to manually update grub and it works fine after that.

Now, when you select the disable boot animation during install, what exactly is that supposed to disable? Because I'm still getting animated graphics during boot.

Had B1.iso in downloads folder of first partition, as root, copied to file system.

installed linked pkg via right click install pkg

Opened terminal and typed vsuper vinstall.

checked xfce and included splash

Smooth advanced install to third partition, boots as expected.

Then installed B2 via usb to partition 3, the option for B1 was available, I chose B2 for again smooth install.

chose lilo to sda3 and booted partition via boot manager.

You should not see the red X unless you are logging in another user, while a user is currently logged in. If this is the case, then you're running low on a resource somewhere. An idea to check this I think would be to ctrl+F2 , log in, run htop. Go back to F7 and then trying loggin in another user. When the issues start showing up, go back to F2 (while still keeping the new login running) and see what's hapenning there. Let me know. Thanks.

just an observation, the 1920x1080 wallpapers do not scale well on 1280x1024 perhaps 1920x1200 or larger would look more like expected. not an issue just observation.

You should not see the red X unless you are logging in another user, while a user is currently logged in.

The red X are on the cancel buttons of session, language and action. if I click session all I see is a list of underscores and the X on the cancel button. If I click language I can see the text for them and the cancel on the cancel button. if I click it and then click session or action I can then see the list..fluxbox..etc. it is a consistant text issue. it did not happen with the previous login screen.

just an observation, the 1920x1080 wallpapers do not scale well on 1280x1024 perhaps 1920x1200 or larger would look more like expected. not an issue just observation.

Oh those red X's :-) . OK got the picture now, thanks.  It seems like there may be a font selection issue in the configuration. I'm on it...

I notice some app are missing comments at the start menu...so I have update the desktop files for below packages to make it look more polish :)
all should be available at the 7.1 untested repo...feel free to test out the new builds

Quote
gkrellm-2.3.5
tuxcards-2.2.1
pysol-2.0
leafpad-0.8.18.1
epdfview-0.1.8

PS: same problem to vcpufreq so maybe the devs should update the desktop files as well...

BTW, when u look at the screenshot, you will notice there is a black line at the xfce panel. Reduce the panel row size to 23px instead of 30px (default) will remove the line. It seem it only happen to elementary-VL theme...it seem also only happen on 32bit only

I feel the xfce4-timer and weather plugins should be stock options. that would add 3530k but improve default customizability

http://files.myopera.com/dsl-o/albums/550557/Stock%20options.png

I like this wallpaper but changed to 1920x1200 from x1080 to get the essence at 1280x1024>

my default quick fix

http://files.myopera.com/dsl-o/albums/550557/B2Default1.png

Added package manager and leafpad to favorites list

Replaced root folder with media player next to volume on the upper panel giving volume control more purpose in that location.

Moved the wifi indicator to the std location

Changed the menu icon

Reduced lower panel row size to 23 as mentioned by hata_ph

install completed without issue and booted as expected, unresolved login screen text issue otherwise login ok

observations..no boot splash ( did not check the disable splash box)...no pdf viewer

overthere,
I am attaching a file for you to test for me , please. Log in as root. Rename the existing file with .old on the end of it, and then insert this new StarFlash.xml file into /usr/share/gdm/themes/StarFlash/. Then log out, and check your menu text again to see if text has restored.

Let me know your results.

Thanks,

@Masta.....appears to revert to circles?

renamed starfish.xml.old and as root copy linked file.

logout= black screen with gray box, no text, box has button with blue back arrow. when clicked get the splash with brown eyed susan(flower) which has no text, but can log back in.

the issue appears consistent..click language then cancel and the text is normal and I can see the log in name typed, or options when clicking session and action.

has anyone else experianced this? perhaps my old hardware and not worth your efforts

overthere,
You should remove the new file, and rename the old file by removing the .old extension. This shows us the issue is outside of the theme itslef. Will dig deeper.

UPDATE: Attached a new file. Please log in as root. Go to usr/share/gdm and rename defaults.conf by adding .old on the end. Copy this attached defaults.conf file into that directory. Log out and test the menu text again. If no change is seen, reboot the machine, and check for change. Let me know the results.

Masta..thats progress

added the new defaults.conf and log out
get black screen with error box but can now read the text

can't open file /usr/share/gdm/themes/VL-seven/VL-seven.xml

Clicking the ok takes me to the flower login screen and it has text now.

Reboot from there brings same error box and clicking the ok takes me to flower login with text, same as logout

Created a folder named VL-Seven in /usr/share/dgm/themes and copy/pasted the content of StarFlash.

Then renamed the .xml VL-Seven. this gave error for /VL-Seven/StarFlash.xml so renamed back to StarFlash.xml

now can logout and StarFlash screen has text.

The remaining issue can likely be attributed to something else, the video card?.

Random lines of text may appear to be missing but gliding the pointer over the area or clicking brings it to view. I have this issue with word processing aswell and in previous B.iso's so attributed the login issue as a more severe version of that. however it remains after this fix.

Ie if I logout and click session, everything looks fine except fluxbox text is missing, click cancel and then session again and all is normal, or rather than click cancel just slide pointer over the area and it appears.

in this case though the box is gray and I can see the text but it is whiteish so in the word processor can not see as it is white on white.

anyway thanks for the fix, I now have text on the login screen.

There is no VL-Seven theme in the B2 iso.
I have went back to read through this thread and I see that you have used one to install the other, and I think this might be a part of the issue. There has been some installer code changed since those older iso. Please try using B2 to boot and install B2. This should fix a lot.

FIRST, download a fresh B2 ISO. Go from there.
Thanks again,

what are you suggesting?.
that it is not possible to download B2 using the browser on B1.1 and use unetbootin to create a usb install.
or that I can not install B2.1 using vinstall from B2
or that I must always format the partition with gparted prior to the installer formatting the partition

I agree there is no VL-Seven theme but that is what the error said so I created it and it worked.

sorry guess I should go do something else for a while

cheers.

OK..I booted puppy 5.7.1 and used gparted to delete all the partitions on the hd /dev/sda

then  in terminal typed dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

then in gparted created a new partition table

then created three partitions, 2 ext3 and one swap the first is boot.

classic linux setup

with nothing on it.

I am downloading B2 on another computer as I started prior to reading your second  post and will burn to cd and install.

right now I am going to listen to a couple of 78's on my refurbished new to me vintage 50's tube powered hifi record player. I have elvis-don't be cruel, somethings gatta give-sammy davis and bebopalula by I will find out when I get there

Well that was be-bop-a-lula by scatman crothers, there is a youtube vid-tops 1956 if your curious

Ok downloaded B2, checked sum and burned to cd
installed to formatted ext3 partition, advanced, existing, xfce4, smooth install

login screen same as before

try.xml exactly as suggested...same result as before

remove.old and add.old to default.conf and copy linked default.conf to /usr/share/gdm

this time no error logout to starflash with no text

reboot..error can't open file/usr/share/gdm/themes/VL-Seven/VL-Seven.xml... click ok
opens flower login screen....same as I posted before

logout a couple times same

but ok I will take the heat what did I do wrong?

will go download B2.1 and burn to another cd and install that to the other partition formatted ext3 currently empty.

Finally was able to download VL7.1-B2.1 32bit. My ISP is going from bad to worse.
I call it now Fraudband. They claim in the brochure to give 1Mb speed when in
fact the average is now barely 25 Kb.

Anyhow, my pet claws-mail still hangs on Configuration>Account preferences>OK

With Claws-mail mail will not go out at port 25. That's new.

On top panel Folder /root : Failed to execute the preferred application for category "FileManager"
Failed to change to directory '/root' (Permission denied)

I like the login screen and layout.

B2.1 32 bit

downloaded on linux mint mate petra and burned to cd with brasero, sum checked

installed via gui advanced, existing, xfce /dev/sda2 lilo to partition

smooth install boots to login screen

the short version regarding the login

although I can login and out at will the name/password has no text and the popup is blank

if I click language and then cancel all is well

alternatively if I click action and touch the THIRD item and wait for a sec for the popup  then cancel all is well

otherwise I can type textless fake names and passwords and get the error message,

scroll the blank session dialog with white highlites and blank yellow popups

or the first two items on the action list with highlites and popups and cancel,

can do this for hours consistantly

if I choose/click the xdmcp item the dialog appears and I have to touch the cancel button to see the text, cancel brings me back to the same textless state but again pause and cancel and all is well

at first I was not stopping long enough on the third action item for it to work

not an issue for me I can login/out or click language/cancel when I want to change the session etc.

but if this is happening to others it is a problem that needs fixing.

overthere,
That eliminates an issue with an iso/usb installation and shows a consistant result. Good news there. I have installed B2 iso on this real hardware and in a virtual machine, but neither are showing your results, unfortunately. I did find a minor error in the gdm.conf on the B2 iso, and the the attached file from previous post has that fix. I do recall seeing the "no text" while typing username and password in, once.

I did not read anywhere that you had this issue with the Vl-Seven theme used in previous iso. That with eliminating the iso/usb install as an issue, points back to the GDM and theme. But nothing there is directing to the VL-Seven theme, that is a bit confusing. I am out of time today, but I have a plan which will have to wait until Monday though.
  Thanks asgain.

If no one else has the issue then hardly worth your efforts.

it is odd that touching the xdmcp item restores all the text and that the chooser dialog has the same issue. not sure how that relates to language but as I have lost confidence using the system anyway I am going to seek and destroy that  and see what happens

ya, bad logic but I am wasting time one way or the other.  :)

Today the mail went out at port 25 with claws-mail.

claws-mail still hangs with Configuration>Preferences for current account>OK=hang.

However, if I first do: Configuration>Edit accounts>close then Configuration>Preferences for current account>OK
there is no hang and when this window closes the Edit accounts is up again and can be closed.

Umplayer works with DVD and Gnome-Mplayer with audio CD.

Changing to another language in login window works so does changing to session to fluxbox and out of it.

Ok reinstalled B2.1 32

same consistant no text in login

If I click language then cancel all the text is in the dialogs and password box

If I click actions and choose xdmcp and ok the dialog appears but has no text

If I wait a moment then "no serving hosts were found" appears at the top and refresh appears on the refresh button

If I then touch the cancel button the word appears, same with help

but nothing appears on the open a session to the selected host button and just above there is an underscore to right of text box and button with underscore on the left that suggest text should be there.

If I click cancel I return to login screen with no text even though I had clicked language and cancel and had text when I chose the xdmcp option.

this is what lead me to believe it was related to the option but it is easier to say I am going to remove it than actually doing it without making the system suspect.

I think I will reinstall B1.1 and have a closer look at the xdmcp option as I did not try it...there was a random freeze as I recall on the login screen and just black dots for password. but the text was always in the session box, etc as I recall.

perhaps all for not as no one seems to have the issue but I am curious

will make a post about the previous xdmcp option and then stop posting about it.

Edit: the B1.1 xdmcp option responds the same way, cancel returns me to the login but the text is still there.
perhaps the dialog is supposed to have the underscores I do not know.

ok enough about my issue, sorry for all the unnecessary posts

As mentioned the xvkbd pkg in gslapt does not work

it does add a menu item with no icon

looked in /usr/bin and no xvkbd

added the app from 7.0 /usr/bin and made executable
 the menu item then works

remove pkg via gslapt removes the menu item only

keyboard works with launcher and icon available

I added so I could use the mouse and xvkbd to play cribbage in terminal as the BSD-games version is the only available crib for linux

I installed 64-B2 on a Dell Latitude D620 (unetbootin-usb-stick).  In the advanced install, when I finished partitioning, program would not go forward.  So I rebooted, and, using existing (from last install) partitions, it went forward and completed the install. I put lillo in the big drive (not in swap, root or /home).  After the install completed, on reboot, the machine would not finish loading VL 7.1.  Stopped at the first vector screen.  I rebooted with the install usb stick in the slot and it loaded fine.  But VL7 would not load unless the usb stick was in the slot.

So, figuring I put lilo in the wrong place, I reinstalled 64-b2 on the same machine, this time selecting the "automatic" install option.  Installed fine but, as before, VL 7 would not load completely unless I put the install usb stick in the slot.

Thanks vincent2, but its a bit beyond me.  I don't know which file to edit.  Its been a long time, somewhere around 5.6, since I fooled with lilo and at that time I think there were some lilo options in vasm.  I don't know which file to edit.

I will fool around with liloconfig a bit as time permits.  I really don't need that machine, but had access to it and wanted to do a bit of testing for the VL project.

B2.2 32bit

both text install and gui install do not kick cd, and  reboot. hear click then monitor posts system halted and flashing cursor.

however with previous usb install notice that cd was opened so compromise perhaps would be wait for key press(enter?) giving time to remove cd and close door or just hit enter to reboot if usb, with notice to remove install media and press key.

both installs advanced, existing, xfce, lilo to partition.

both boot to login and logins ok with my exception no text till click lang and cancel.

observation..leafpad moved to accessories and now has discription with others..

B2.2 32-bit
Used http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/x86/vinstall-0.1-i586-1vl71.txz (http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.1/x86/vinstall-0.1-i586-1vl71.txz)
From running 7.0 Light.

From package's slack-required, already had pygobject and pygtk. In 7.0, "python.setuptools" is called just "setuptools". Installed that and urwid.
Tried, discovered it also needed pyparted. Installed that. Noticed also that package install needs git, which was already installed.

Never did get urwid to work, whether from root terminal or console session.

Ran "vsuper vinstall" from an X-session, and it behaved exactly like booting the CD and pointing the installer to an ISO on a mounted partition, to wit:
Process ran normally, hung after "installing bootloader". I did this twice, once with lilo to bootsector, once with grub to bootsector. Same result both times. Would not boot, no initrd in TARGET's /boot. Don't know enough grub to fiddle with it. Commented out the initrd in lilo.conf and reran lilo, which got the system booted. Followed the slack-type README in /boot to generate a generic initrd, put the initrd line back in lilo.conf and reran lilo. This worked too, but of course it didn't pick up what was necessary to get bootsplash up.

I see no sdb1 or anything similar in VL 7.1 B2's /etc/lilo.conf.

As I may have mentioned, this boot business is not a problem for me as I use 7.0.  I just reported it.

Uelsk8s

I load 7.1 with a usb stick and can't figure out how to copy the iso to root.  With the usb stick in, program can't find vinstall.

Also, I can't download the iso to that Dell laptop as it apparently does not have an internal wireless card and 7.1 won't light up my little external wireless card that normally works on all computers.

Neither my Epson nor my Brother printer is detected.  :'(

I installed Slackware-14.1 and both printers are detected and I can
print with both. Just for info.

Installed B2.2 (VL64), was able to log in (once).  System went unresponsive after about three minutes (I attempted to install Opera, got a GLIBC_2.14 error (didn't take a picture), and then couldn't do anything else.  Rebooted, selected at GRUB, and got the attached picture output.

I think the idea is if you have an existing system 7.0 or 7.1 installed,  you can copy the new iso file (ie:via usb or from download folder) to the existing  filesystem or / as root, and then either install the vinstall pkg to that system and run vinstall as discribed to install the iso in /, or if you have an iso image installed to usb via unetbootin and boot the usb, it will see both the iso on the partition and also the one on the stick (ie:if older) and you can choose which one to install.

this is handy if you have an installed system and are installing to a second partition but if you have a unit with no os or replacing existing system then direct install from cd or usb is logical.

Let's say I'm not sure I like the new XFCE.

VL7.1-B2.4-32Bit

via dvdrw, gui install (enter), advanced, existing, lilo to partition.

kicked  cd/dvd drawer then flashing cursor, held power button to shut down.

boot, no splash (did not check box)

same issue at login, no text, documented

login/out fine, create new user

observation, adding wallpapers to /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce lists wallpapers on wallpaper chooser list and clicking loads wallpaper like the mate chooser. The default wallpaper should be in this folder.

The current plan is to stick with kernel 3.10, since it is an LTS release.

I used advanced and kept my home partition - but used the same user name as I had in my 7.00 install - initially I didn't format it.  It didn't work in as much as the XFCE desktop would not load.  Hence a fresh install

Ran into that as well. I chalked it up to the massive change to XFCE once I did a full install.

Which comes to something that should be checked for. One of the main reasons I loathe reformatting /home is due to the changes and customization I tend to do with my desktop. Up until Beta 2, I've been able to tell the installer to leave /home alone and everything has worked fine. With the XFCE changes, I ended up having to copy the few items I didn't want to loose and do a fresh install, including format /home. I hate formatting home! Whatever happened to the installation and first boot checking for compatibility issues and making configuration changes on the fly? I realize this is Beta territory, but we should have feature locked before the first beta was released and we should be fine tuning in preparation for release.

Seems we're taking steps backwards instead of moving forward, and it's making me very uncomfortable.

I completely agree with retired1af that the option to avoid reformatting the /home partition when upgrading VL is crucial.

On this point, I suspect that if I were to install lyx, etm (and perhaps other programs that are hard or time-consuming to reinstall) as non-root rather than root (root install is normally the easiest) and followed my usual practice of not formatting /home when upgrading to the next version of VL, I could avoid reinstalling those programs as well.  That would be very nice.  Heck, I could even then install and work with a new beta version pretty easily.  I don't know where the cut-off should be.  Some programs, like python, qtpy, setuptools, etc should probably always be root. I guess this is something that each user will need to decide for him/herself.
