Post by: Lyn on August 12, 2014, 09:12:28 am
Can anyone recommend a combined Printer/Scanner that is known to work with Vector Linux, cheap to buy and run?

Almost anything from Epson should work.  My XP-200 printer/scanner/copier works perfectly and was inexpensive.  I believe I had to install a driver from the Epson website when I installed the VL 7.1 RC to get it to scan, but that's minor.

The page you want is: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=201984&infoType=Downloads&platform=OSF_O_LINUX
They are available as rpms or debs, so you'll need to convert the packages.  There's also an srpm so you can pull the sources out of that to build a VL package if you want.

I am ignorant re printers, but what about networked printers? Is a working lan the only thing you need to print with them? I think I would buy one of those.

A networked device would be my first choice. In my experience, they are likely to use a standard network protocol at least for basic features.

Depends on the printer. I've had great luck setting up Epson, HP and Samsung. Canon? Not so much. Drivers are an absolute pain to come by.

The Epson XP-200 I use has built in WiFi.  That makes things really simple.  Newer models from Epson should have the same capacity.
