Title: VectorLinux 7.1 final has been released!!!!!!
Post by: vector on June 27, 2015, 12:48:28 am
The VectorLinux team is proud to announce  the final release of VectorLinux 7.1! This release is the culmination of years of work to make our distro the standard which all others hope to achieve. We have successfully developed an easy to use installer that can be used in both gui and text mode depending on the hardware involved that requires very little user intervention to achieve a successful installation of the system. We have completely automated our internal package system so that all packages are constantly up to date and patched as necessary. The system is available both in 32 bit and 64 bit versions and features the latest linux 3.18.16 lts kernel. We use the latest Xfce as our gui desktop with Fluxbox as an alternate if the user is so inclined. The repo contains the bigger systems like KDE and thousands of other programs easily installed thru the tried and true gslapt/slaptget installer. We hope you find that the blend of programs included in the standard install to be best of breed and covers all the day to day tasks that a user expects of his/her system and maybe some unexpected extras. Lastly I would like to thank our small but very dedicated team of developers for making this a reality for all to enjoy!!!

For those adventurous enough to give our baby a try here are the iso download links:

64 bit (unetbootin, lilo) loaded fine on my Samsung RF511 and works great.  Internal wireless card worked flawlessly. Good work!

when i looked at the distrowatch and read "the brand new VectorLinux 7.1. A Slackware-derived distribution with Xfce and without systemd."      implies that slackware has systemd....does anyone else read it like that?

I don't think it's meant to. It's simply that a distro's inclusion or non-inclusion of systemd is something of interest to Distrowatch's readership.

(The opinions expressed about systemd in the Distrowatch Weekly discussion forums have been overwhelmingly negative. The debate about it has quieted down now, but it was going strong for weeks.)

eco2geek i do not believe its intended either, i know it was meant as a comparrison to give the reader an idea of what the distro is all about. to me it reads that vector linux its like slackware without systemd though. its probably not even a big deal anyway. just 1 of my ocd moments
Title: Re: VectorLinux 7.1 final has been released!!!!!!
Post by: overthere on June 28, 2015, 09:26:20 pm
It reads "A Slackware-derived distribution with Xfce and without systemd. ". I take this to mean that Vector is derived from slackware and uses the xfce desktop and does not use systemD. I looked for a list of distros that do not use systemD and Slackware and its derivatives appear not to at the moment. thus the mention appears simply to ensure that users are aware that this new release is not an exception. worth mention it would appear.

http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

However, I for one would prefer to see any further discussion posted in a new topic..jmho

Congratulations! I tried to copy several files, there's something wrong. VectorLinux do not recognize Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is a work in progress, but since it was not a show stopper for the release, it may get adopted soon.

there is currently no live iso. unfortunately the answer is no, you cant try it before installing. however a live iso is in the works
you can however try it in a vm like virtualbox or vmware

I noticed that the documentation that is included with it is for version 6.0, and version 7.1 won't fit on a standard size CD.

7.1 is great... installed it today after trying lubuntu/xubuntu/bodhi/puppy for daily usage... this version is a milestone, good and stable!  Different more modern than the old 4.0/4.3/5.9 versions but same stable feel.

Thanks, SmartDuck (webmouse)

Post by: vincent2 on August 27, 2015, 07:20:59 am
Bon Soiree!

recently upgraded to vl7.1 std  final 64 bit, for vital PGP applications it's quite buggy... email client such as  sylpheed and claws-mails kept crashing once  press "save" the config, trying to use the same email PGP keys under vl7.0 std 64 bit, that's doesn't work at all  although PGP plugins 're loaded and PGP keys 're imported as well, can compile email  with PGP and send, but never de-crytoed...

Vl7.1std  delibrately  LEAVEs the doors wide open for NSA surveillances  so far...

so far claws-mail on repo remains outdated 3.9.3 version.

wellcome the dedicated VL71 users  testing further on PGP flaws of VL7.1 std 64 bit.....

Vincent2 your input is welcome, including what you view as shortfalls.

The problem is being able to decrypt exactly what you are trying to say.

If in fact the programs do not automatically decrypt how does that leave anything
open in the wild?

You comment on VL7.1 deliberately doing anything without being involved as
a developer is not a statement you should be making.

The development team takes security seriously. At no point is anything done to reduce security.

The crash for sylpheed and claws-mail will be looked into.

Bonjour!
Thanks!
NOw the issue 're figured out, "pinentry"  's necassary for  PGP decrption in mail clients. But  on VL7.1 , pinentry  package 's missing still...Have to go slackware repo to grab it, once pinentry  is installed, everything's back to normal and stable again  with PGP mail clients now......
same issue encountered before with vl7.0 as well...

once pinentry installed, claws-mail 3.12 version sorce code's compiled from source install, running  stable  now
(claws-mail 3.9.3 pkg on VL7.1 repo doesn't support TLS, ssl protocol when pkg's compiled), but if  modifying  configure seetings of claws-mails, press save button, claismail soon went crashed, pressing apply button everything's normal...

at least claws-mail 's lightweighted in comparison to thunderbird...

pls. do upload some PGP key management tools to vl7.1 repo  as well.

meanwhile, none of input tools (for japanese ,korean, hindi, laos, bangali, burmese, etc) such as "ibus-m17n"  and "fcitx"   available yet on vl7.1 main repo and test repo so far.....

there're ibus-m17n and fcitx on vl7.0  repo, installed  those don't wok on vl7.1 64 bit at all...

cmake on vl7.1 64 bit also isn't updated version

Title: fcitx
Post by: vincent2 on September 07, 2015, 01:40:26 am
in order to make fcitx working,
Below is the extra command needs to add to /etc/profile
Quote
# For fcitx
    export LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
    export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
    export XMODIFIERS="@im=fcitx"

Bon Soiree!

there's another  daunting bug  on vl7.1std 64 bit,run xfce4 desktop for a while, then open console to run programmes, kept complaining can't open display: 0,0...then no programmes can be launched again, have to log off, resatrt xfce4 again and again......

here's output of running gslapt:

#Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

where's gone wrong?

how to fix it up?

under vl7.0 std  and vl7.1std beta and rc never encounter such bug at all......

DO offer Fix commands asap on it!!!!!!!!!!!!

This does not look like a bug, but an access control issue.
Open a terminal and run:

Code: [Select]
$ xhost +
And check if that fixes it. You should research about the security implications of this command though.
This often happens after trying to run xapps as root, between other possible causes. We may have a bug around the x credentials (xauth is rejecting connections thinking you are not an authorized client).
I have seen this after network manager reconfigures network also.

i dont think so brother i am a developper and i run alot of distro's in virtualbox , vectorlinux run the black text from the linux distro but the distro itself wont load , not in 32bit and not in 64bit.

very strange other distro's works just fine ...

I'm not sure how you are testing this, but just for kicks, I just tried and my tests were successful.  Here is my setup

HOST OS:  Winderz 8 64-bit
VBOX VERSION:  5.0.10 r104061

Created the VM using these parameters
Selected 'Other Linux(64-bit)' for the OS Type
Allocated 756MB of RAM to it.
Dynamically allocated 8GB .vdi for disk drive.

No other settings were touched.
Loaded ISO image when it prompted for 'startup disk'.

Would you mind describing how this is different than what you are doing?

nothing wrong with the distro i dont think so , i have download it 4 times on 10mb/per sec lol
and why the hell must i burn for testing in virtualbox ... i never burn iso. all other iso work all .. but that i have always with vector distro so why in the hell load others and this one not haha tell me ...
if you burn the iso vector to dvd , that it than works i dont now , but it must work without burning two ..

i tell you why Slackware Linux is a  Linuxdistributie so it sucks

Due to a pile of Hardware-problems it took me this long before I could give it a swirl, but now that I have it running: Looks Mighty fine! =)
Minus: Not having a SAS/Sata Raid controller the notification on startup about the esas2r-driver not loading might be able to cause some panic in newbs... ;-)
And I get a short list of errors that I don't get the time to read. So far nothing that visibly influences the system.

What's slightly more annoying is the following: Network connection sets up just fine, but as soon as I take so much as a look at the network-manager it disconnects and won't re-connect 'till reboot. What's up with that?

On a side-note: Angband and Egoboo won't work on a bare install, so I think these packages need a stern look.

Ok, Angband works; Had to enable UTF8-support in the locale (WHY isn't that standard?!?!....)

Egoboo still refuses to create a binary....
