We have started work on the 7.2 development series.  The first alpha build is ready for installation and testing.  Please download and test.

About this build.

How to test.

We are looking for as wide a range of testers as possible.  All kinds of hardware setups.

Targeted test areas

We are especially interested in testing results on the following areas.

This is alpha.   It is far from the finished product.   Keep testing future builds to follow progress on your bug reports and thanks for testing

Notice to testers, there are three ways of installing this release:
- Burning ISO to optical disc and booting it from the optical drive
- Writing ISO to USB drive using the "dd" command
- Installing from ISO in a virtual machine

It will not work with Unetbootin.

we do not support the use of unetbootin.  on linux use dd

https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vinstall/wiki/creating%20a%20vector%20linux%20bootable%20usb%20stick (https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vinstall/wiki/creating%20a%20vector%20linux%20bootable%20usb%20stick)

this is a fairly simple task. however care must be taken or you can very easily destroy all the data on your hard drive.

here is the step by step process

1) download a vector linux .iso

2) open a terminal and cd to the directory where the iso is located

Code: [Select]
cd /home/directory/of/iso
3) insert your usb stick (1 gigabyte or larger) and find its assignment

Code: [Select]
fdisk -l
4) create the actual bootable usb stick

Code: [Select]
dd if=/directory/to/iso/nameofvector.iso of=/directory/of/usb
for example

Code: [Select]
dd if=/home/wigums/VL64-7.1-STD-B0.50.iso of=/dev/sdb
and thats it. once dd has run its course (which will take a couple minutes) you now have a bootable usb stick

Thank you all for testing and for reporting bugs.  I can't tell you guys how much the bug reporting helps.  As a result, here is Alpha build 0.1.1 which aims to fix a few of the bugs reported until now.

The ISO files and checksums can be found at the usual places.

Deltas are also available at the same location.

Make sure you check https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vl72/issues?status=new&status=open for a list of known bugs and file one for anything you find wrong that is not already filed there.

Thanks to you guys reporting bugs here is what we have been able to resolve so far.

Have fun and test.

Thanks

[ EDIT ]

Sorry guys, these things are getting built faster than I can type.  A0.2 is now available at the same place.

A couple successful tests on A0.2, real hardware:

Printing: It detected a network printer, and printed to it. I didn't have to do anything but select the printer. Don't know what mechanism it used, no printers are configured in CUPS.

Burned a CD, and a DVD, with Brasero.

It is unusual for me but I have been having problems with the screen on this version - it would tear (become garbage).  If I caught it early enough, I could log out and back in for some relief.  On one occasion, as I blindly finished typing, It got so bad that I had to power off as I couldn't tell if the computer was responding to my key strokes.  This was as a user.  I had these difficulties as root though not as bad.
(I did make a bug report on this)

I think this is an issue with intel video hardware.  Make sure you check your bug report frequently and provide more information if requested there

Update:
A0.3 is now available.  Please test and report back.  Most of the bugs that were filed at the bug tracker have been resolved.  Keep checking https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vl72/issues for the list of current known issues.

This is our best build yet.  This release features the LTS 4.1 version of the linux kernel.  Build A0.3 has 4.1.13.
A lot of work has been done to ship a functional and good looking default desktop that works out of the box.

Thanks everyone for testing.  Keep the reports coming.

Really impressed with how far along this is for an Alpha Build.

Other than
1. vasm-legacy fails when launched as normal user and then trying to go to super from within the program. (Launches fine when started as root)

2. Root terminal needs it's .desktop file re-written. If you check it in /usr/share/applications/gksu.desktop
It's trying to launch a terminal we do not have.

Had some weird screen behavior, but not sure of the cause of that yet.  A window of one program will become unreadable but toggle to another program and it's fine.

sledgehammer:

I visited "sledgehammer"'s account on bitbucket. If you recall creating the account about two years ago and can remember creating the repo "my-play-ground" as a test, then maybe you can try checking some other old email addresses of yours. If not, someone else has it. Pity the name is unavailable and the user isn't doing anything with the account.

It is helpful to have Bitbucket user names match forum names when they can, but not necessary. Create an account with a different name. In your first several posts, sign "sledgehammer" or "John" at the bottom of the post itself. People tracking the bug posts will learn quickly to recognize your Bitbucket username as being you.

Thanks for your reports so far, and for helping to make them even easier to follow.

Trying to load lyx on this little eee machine. Installed  libsigsegv-2.10-i486-1_SBo.tgz and texi2html-5.0-i486-1_SBo.tgz from slackbuiilds. Couple of library problems but they compiled. I am getting no killer errors. But texlive from slackbuilds.org wouldn't compile.  Stopped at following point:

Quote
checking requested system `zlib' library... ok
checking requested system `libpng' library... ok
checking requested system `freetype2' library... ok
checking requested system `gd' library... failed
checking requested system `pixman' library... failed
checking requested system `cairo' library... failed
checking requested system `poppler' library... failed
checking requested system `xpdf' library... failed
checking requested system `icu' library... failed
configure: error: some requested system libraries failed
vector://home/lawquest/src/texlive/texlive[/quote

I have no clue where to get the gd library.  Apparently it loads php5, but I can't find that either.

As far as AO 3.1 goes, it seems to work flawlessly.

The eee machine is 32 bit.  I installed gd 2.1.1-x86_64-1vl72, being the only one I could find in the repository, but still get the "gd" error on installing texlive.

The installer on the 64-bit version wouldn't run on my system.  I get adding X-files followed by a number multiple times and then it drops me to a command prompt.  The system is then locked up hard.  I wonder if this is because of my legacy  nVidia GeForce 6150 SE chipset.  That's a problem on a lot of new distro releases.  On Debian 8.1 it works, but only with a legacy version of the proprietary nVidia driver.  In their case I can drop to the text based install and then install the needed driver.  That isn't an option with VL 7.2, is it?

Edit:  I created a Bitbucket account and also reported it there.

A suggestion, a minor bug and a question:

Neither vi nor vim is part of a base install?  Really?  vi is the universal editor.  My not so humble suggestion is that it should be included.

Without vi you need to set visudo to use another editor.  Right now visudo hangs.  This is the minor bug.

The question:  do you want us testing the base install or do you want us to do a slapt-get --upgrade?

I just put two issues in the bug tracker. But on a more positive note, the "screen tearing" issue seems to have been resolved :), although I would like to see umplayer, xine, and vpackager re-included in the revised edition.

Hi guys!

I tried the 64-bit A0.3.7 first, but Brasero on Ubuntu Studio said it couldn't be burned to disc, even with overburn on. I then proceeded to try the 64-bit A0.2.3 Light. I sure hope this is the place to report bugs on that.

On this computer (http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-7730g-734g64mn-17-core-2-duo-p7350-vista-home-premium-4-gb-ram-320-gb-hdd-plus-320-gb/specs/) (yeah I still use that old thing) I don't get a graphical installer, it tries but it seems to hang on "loading X-Files"  and then attempts a TUI install. In older versions (not sure about this one) the passwords for users and root would be visible when added, since I had company I decided to not type them. I love the people around me, but they don't need to see my passwords and I don't want to know theirs.
[edit] It still does that, not sure if it's a feature or a bug  :P  [/edit]

Install went smoothly, Grub seems to be able to boot everything without tweaking, Kudos for that. After booting, I tried to make my default user/password combination, but found out I didn't know the exact syntax for 'passwd'. I tried loading the man-page, but it seems none of the man-pages work. Trying to do so results in erros about /usr/bin/nroff and /usr/bin/gtbl not being found.

That's all for now, keep up the good work!

@The Headacher, thanks for being (one of) the first to try that ISO. The errors about gtbl and nroff are caused by a missing "groff" package. Thanks for the report, you are now the official head tester for that version!  ;D

Those old Vista machines make great Linux boxes.

Assuming you managed to log in as root:
To change the root password, just use "passwd" and type the new one twice.
To change a user password, use "passwd nameofuser" - then same as above.

Thanks for the heads up Nightflier, I decided to reinstall because (here it comes) I am unsure how to handle Grub properly and I just installed a new version of Studio Ubuntu, which doesn't automagically get it right on that computer (it did on my other though). So rather than reading up on Grub I used the lazy approach and let VL do all the work :p.

Not having man available on my test install can easily be mitigated, but it seemed like something that should reported. Can I use the VLCore bitbucket, or should I use another one for bugs found in light?

Absolutely use the bitbucket bug tracker. Just make sure to specify it is for Light, and what version.

UPDATE:

Build A0.3.8 was completed yesterday.

I'd like to thank those of you who have tested before and invite everyone to continue testing.  We have been in alpha mode for the past 4 months and so far been able to squash most every bug that has been reported.  I'd like to start moving towards Beta soon, so everybody please download and test A0.3.8 and let us know of any serious showstoppers.  Otherwise, Beta1 will be here soon if nobody reports serious problems.

Ijust installed via USB/automatic and it went fine...
The charset is still nailed to US during login, so I need to use z instead of y within the german charset for my password.
The recognition of the screen takes time till DHCP is done.
I still need to 'germanize' the clock/date-tooltip to
Code: [Select]
%A, %d. %B %Y and 24h. (mind the Commata and the Point)
Timezone is Europe/Berlin, system time is eg. 16:45, local is 16:45, 15:45 is shown.
Screensavers keep saying, there was an error loading on screen »:0.0« as root. (Maybe this is no error?)

EDIT
GL-screensavers keep flashing
Code: [Select]
LibGL error: Failed to open drm device: Permission denied.
LibGL error: Failed to load driver: r600.
as user. (yes it's the Compaq CQ56 with onboard [AMD/ATI] RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4225/4250])

You really should not log in to the desktop as root.  This error is to be expected (and is sort of a security feature) when you log in as root.

Germanizing is no problem, I just would let you know, but the time shown is, even when I set HW-clock to local not correct.
I cannot change the charset to login with my password correctly and on every boot it is also set to english language again.
Recognition maybe not the right word, it takes time to detect, wich screen is where and how it is once set.
I see, trying to start a screensaver as root was a dumb idea, but it was set and I saw the error...

EDIT
damn, you're fast! ;-)

It looks like you are trying to use the broadcom-sta builder on 7.2.  That will not work.  The problem in 7.2 that prevents broadcom wireless drom working got fixed yesterday.  In 7.2 you should only need to modprobe wl
Title: Re: VectorLinux 7.2 Alpha Build - TESTERS NEEDED!
Post by: sidoko on February 19, 2016, 05:48:18 am
It did work for the A0.3.6 and I made it successful through all instances.
Now (on A0.3.8)  I did a modprobe wl and it didn't do anything, so I thought something is wrong. After updating the kernel on 7.1 I had the same problem and the wl-build solved it on both sides(7.1 on 4.0.7 and 'stock' A0.3.6). Now I just missed the restart (not only reload! what a fool I am...) and manually switch off and back on again to initialize the card. The wl now works fine.

The localization is still a problem I can only workaround with tricks. Before logging in, the keyboard is always set to en_EN, thereafter it is set however I did.

The clocksetting is now HW:UTC, TZ Europe/Berlin and it shows the right local-time, but my HW-clock is physically set to local, so effectively it shows the HW-time without regarding the TZ...

As a user, I don't get the 'Root Terminal' out of the menu, it just won't start. SU works fine!

I there a problem with OpenGL on my Mobility Radeon as mentioned earlier?

Thanks so far for your hard work and your continuing answers, I keep learning...

Like I said, the problem with the wl module was fixed yesterday, the next ISO build will have the problem fixed.  In the mean time, you can get the fix via slapt-get as root in a terminal
Code: [Select]
slapt-get -u; slapt-get -i --reinstall kernel4.1 kernel4.1-modules Reboot, and this will allow you to 'modprobe wl' when you log back in, and your wifi should work.  As for the localization stuff, you may find the 'vlocaleset' command handy.

As for the 'root terminal' not opening anything, this is a new bug.  I have filed it for you.
https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vl72/issues/92/root-terminal-from-the-applications-menu

You can file new bugs there yourself and we will get them addressed.  Thanks for reporting

Alpha 1 is built.

The kernel has been updated to 4.4.2 LTS on this one.  Please test your audio/video/usb/printing and everything to make sure it all works.  This would be our target kernel for the final release.

Please download and test.

Thank you

Thanks retired1af,

I also notice that, at least when I have the big tv screen mirrored to the laptop's screen that on reboot the system hangs up mid-reboot and says that it can't find a theme, i.e. that it can't find:

/usr/share/gdm/themes/fedorasomething or another/fedorasomething or another.  Clicking OK allows the reboot to continue.  Sorry about the 'something or another" but I can't recall the exact name used by the fedora theme folder.  Anyway, I looked in the theme folder and there is nothing close to "fedora" in it.

I find the need to click OK after inputting user name and password on the initial sign on screen (after reboot) inconvenient.  On earlier versions, after inputting username, I just pressed tab to get to password screen.  That was faster.

I probably shouldn't have said "need" as I think it probably works same as always.  But the graphic says to push the OK button after entering user name and after entering password and I find that something of a bother.  I preferred the old graphic which simply shows a blank box for username and password on one screen and assumes we know to move the cursor from one box to the other.

VL-7.2-STD-A1.2 is already running on my notebook ACER AO722.
The installation on a usb thumb drive lasted 1 hour and finished without errors.
I can use all the devices (usb, camera, sound, mic, headphones) and all the keyboard keys are functional.
I had to install the pm-utils package to be able to suspend but i can not find a workaround for sound on firefox video playback from the web.Html and flash video playback has no sound. The same soundless video if loaded on smplayer can be played with sound so the problem is neither on the hardware  nor on the driver side.

this is not meant towards you but rather to unetbooten. its garbage.

I dont see anything there that indicates what may have broken your gdm.

Can you boot to your text prompt by selecting the 'TUI' option on boot, then login as root and type 'init 4'

See if that brings up your gdm login screen.

Yes that brought me to the login screen. After that rebooted in default option did the same succesfully as well.
Reinstalled grub and the problem solved. I can now use gdm to login and use xfce4 which now remembers all the customization-localization i'd made.

Version A1.4 has been built is now available for testing.

On this build, look for the following:

* Linux kernel has been update to LTS 4.4.9
* Hibernate button is back to logout dialog.  Default settings hibernate to swap, so if you add a swap partition at install time, you should be able to hibernate your machine.

Downloaded & installed 7.2 64 a1.4.  GUI install failed when starting X with message  "Cannot display this graphics mode.  Optimum resolution 1440x900."  Tried adding several different framebuffer codes without success. Nvidia graphics. This problem has existed since at least 7.1 STD Final.  Installed using CLI OK.  Booted installed system using GUI - logged in, could not launch anything from the menu or connect to wi-fi.  Could launch programs and logout using desktop menu.  Rebooted using TUI, logged in, started xfce4, similar behavior.  Logged out, logged in as root, started xfce4, everthing OK.  Configured wi-fi, several other things, logged out as root, logged back in as me, started xfce4 as me, now things seemed normal..Repeated this process several times, no change.. System looks good and fast when I can get into it.

Thanks for the report Carl, I will try to reproduce your problem and troubleshoot around.

Thanks.  Would it be of help if I posted the hardware list for this machine and/or any of the log files?

Yes, definitely.

Attached are the hardware list and log files from my 1st problem child install.

I did a new install on my other desktop yesterday - similar but newer hardware.  Both GUI and CLI installs worked fine, log in was normal.  But, network manager could not negotiate a connection with the network.  Have both cat 5 and wifi connections on that machine - could not get an address on either one.  Did not try disconnecting one or the other connections.

Did you happen to choose a home partition and not format it during install on that setup that does no have a working x??

Also did you verify the md5sums of the idk image downloaded to run the install from?

Re: 1st pc, no GUI install, x & wifi problems (I named this one 'play2')
ISO passes md5sum check.  Don't use a separate home partition.  All personal files are kept in a separate data partition mounted as /common, with symbolic links from login directory to directories on /common.  Don't think /common was mounted during install, added to fstab 2 days later.

I currently have 7 distros installed on play2.  Good news is that after SEVERAL DAYS of playing with it (TUI boot, root login, start xfce4, start wifi, then logout, relogin as me and start xfce4 and wifi) installation seems
to be normal.  Today, booting GUI, login as me, wifi autostarts, menus work, etc.  Have done more desktop configuration, installed thunderbird, gnucash, libreoffice, did some browsing.  Only change was insuring that xfce4 was preselected session before logging in.  Did this several days ago, didn't seem to make any difference then.  Today it's GREAT and FAST :).  System seems to have healed itself.  X can still die on login but works OK if I try again.

im probably going to hate myself for asking this but why 7 distros?
why not install 1 distro and play with other distros in a VM such as virtualbox?

Multiple distros on a drive is quite common when you are testing/playing with several releases. My single core laptop without hardware virtualization would choke on a virtual machine, but it has been a valuable tool for testing alphas and betas while still being usable for work.

Probably time to wipe out Win2K though.  ;D

Testing kernel 4.4.11 on my laptop, looks good. Wifi works with BCM4321, nvidia 340.96 built without any issues and runs well.

UPDATE
Version A1.4 has been built is now available for testing.

On this build, look for the following:

* Linux kernel has been update to LTS 4.4.9
* Hibernate button is back to logout dialog.  Default settings hibernate to swap, so if you add a swap partition at install time, you should be able to hibernate your machine.

[...]

Enjoy ;)

Cool stuff wigums! Thank you for telling us! ;-)
4.4.9? Nice, I tried on Xubuntu, but it was a mess...

I installed on virtualbox and on my Laptop, everything works fine, even the lousy bcm-WLAN-Card AND it hibernates so fast and restarting takes less than 10 sec.!! Well done work!

BUT, I have a little problem that resides anywhere since 7.1 and I can't find it:
I set everything up for german locale but I cant get the login to the right charset, it keeps its english preset.
To clearify in my humbly english, typing in Z and Y are switched, ü, ö and ä does not exist and the login environment does not save the language settings, every start is is reset to (english/canada).

I made the systems autologin as a workaround, but if I logout the problem pops up again, I realise after 3 denied tries to login and it is something else than secure... :-(

Where do I have to look to solve this little problem?

wigums:  I used to have at least 6 partitions that I could boot into (VL5.9, 6.0, 7.0, 7.1, DOS/FREEDOS, and win98 as well as a test partion).  Unfortunately I clobbered at least two of them installing 7.2RC.  (or was it Slack 14.1?)  Have been unable to play with Vector last winter and spring.

I take it you're talking about language setup here. Vasm-legacy has been updated to put locale setting back on its menu, but your version may not have that yet. That's OK; all versions will let you run it without the menu.
Set the keyboard up first:
Code: [Select]
su root /sbin/vkmapsetEnter root password when prompted, then follow the menu. There is a message that this sets only the console keyboard. That is incorrect, it sets both. I'll be fixing that in later releases.

Pick a locale and character set:
Code: [Select]
su root /sbin/vlocalesetSame process as above. I assume you're looking for de_DE.utf8, but there are other options.
