My (significantly more humble) desktop: http://turkey.fvdh.net/~hanumizzle/images/vnavigator-gtk2.png

It shows VASM development underway...the navigator menu component is complete. My background image, made with my horrible graphical editing skills, is a picture of the scene of the abduction of Sita in a Vietnamese dramatic rendition of the Ramayan. The Juggernaut (Jagan Natha?) is quoted at the bottom appropriately.

(This is the page where I found the picture: http://www.ias.berkeley.edu/orias/SEARama/RamaOverview.htm)

My dockapps from top to bottom are: WPrefs, GNU Emacs (v22, CVS), terminal (a script I wrote as frontend for various terminal programs), Seamonkey, LyX, Audacious (which I never use), wmCalClock, and wmBlueCPU.

In the back you see my muzak collection. As you can see, my muzak collection is very diverse...

I just about finished re-installing SOHO, the old one was to b0rked, so here's a rather neat&clean screenie:

(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4812/screenshotnc5.th.jpg) (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotnc5.jpg)

As you can see, there are quite a lot of icons for audio programs on it. I just finished building them. The icons for StartJack,StopJack, Skale Tracker and Audacity have been Gimped to make nice icons.

The KDE is 3.5.1 from the testing repo, I needed a newer one because Rosegarden wouldn't get built with the default KDE (3.4.2).

The car is a an Eliica. It's a Japanese Electrical car with a 60 kW electric engine INSIDE each wheel (that makes 480 kW total, since it has eight wheels) It might not be very pretty, but I like to think it's the sportscar of the future.

Well, time to resurrect this zombie thread (I like to look at other peoples screenies too).

Here's my current desktop:
(http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/2616/screenieat4.th.jpg) (http://img108.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenieat4.jpg)

The wallpaper is a render of a "tesla roadster", an electric sportscar. I hope to own an electric car one day, when they're slightly more common and affordable.

what can I say? I am an eye candy addict.Very much... sadly I cannot distribute most of the walppapers, because they are not gpl. I also am interested in photography and usually browse flickr. ::)

last two wallpapers are gpl, so we can use them if you like them. :P

speaking of compositing...

I've been a diehard WindowMaker fan for ages (glad to see easuter on board as well), but I'm gonna try the latest Xfce 4.4 beta. I had a slightly earlier version and saw what the built-in compositing manager looked like, among other things like Thunar. (I'm too lazy to download and play with xcompmgr) To be honest, I was pretty impressed with what they did with it. I've been using Xfce on and off since the v3 days and it's interesting to see how far they've gone in terms of both form and function.

Since I signed up on linux.be and will eventually start posting once I am literate in Dutch, I need to have an 31337 desktop befitting of the user screenshots section, lol

you can edit it in any way you want with its layers sepparate. Now we have artwork repository and there is the xcf file of this wallpaper in it too!!  ;D everything is in a sepparate layer,so you can easily move it with GIMP.

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/vl-artwork/wallpapers/big_blue-vec.xcf

but If you dontk know much about gimp or dont have it,I will make a version of the wp,specially for you.=)
Thanks for having such interest in it.  ;D
Thanks goes to John, who made it all possible.  :)

well, the white-glossy style icons originated from mac OsX design (their design is inspirated from there) ,when the standart paper maroon folder icons came from windows (as a default design)... The blue icons are more kde-ish i think... dunno...I like the white theme. They are somewhat futurisic and while being very stylish and slick, these icons are good to get used to and give the desktop a certain feeling of milky softness.. :P Like a very kool interior of a spaceship, lol.

there is a kde window theme that does that.It doesnt use opengl...Kde uses a dirty hack to get transparency (i think the same as in the panel)....you can see that ,because when you have it in front of another opened window,it doesnt show it in the transparent area, instead it shows the background wallpaper behind everything (like a hammeleon,it copies the background image) and when you move the window abit, you can see how the trick is done  ::)

Here's how they implement dat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_(pseudo)#_XROOTPMAP_ID_and_ESETROOT_PMAP_ID_properties

I turned off the Xfce compositor. I like how it looks, but not worth it for the slight, but annoying lag.

Okay, the paranoia thing made some confused.
Check the picture at the left side of the terminal where it usually says "user this and that". I marked them out with black.  ;D
So I guess I'm a bit paranoid.  ::)

Addition: Well of course, I forgot to paint the username at the top of the terminal black.  ;D

I've started to play around with the Brazilian-made Techisa Desktop Environment (TDE). It is touted as a lightweight QT-based Desktop and on first impressions, it seems a very interesting alternative to XFCE. The downside is there are no translations yet, but then I might decide to start working on them if I still like it after a few days... ;D

That's what I have been trying to figure out. I can't find the source code of the latest version anywhere. I will try and contact the devs soon. Would be a real pity if this project isn't continued.

Here's a screenie of my cleaned up desktop. The wallpaper still needs some more gimping (just noticed some things I want to change), but you get the idea.

The yin / yang is to remind me I should balance things, I have a tendency to go to the extremes (e.g. do nothing or do everything at once) The skull is there to remind of my own mortality, to encourage me to get the most out of every day. The flames are there to look cool ;D.

Inspired by retired1af 's transparency I decided to try it on my taskbar too, this is what it looks like when it's not cluttered with windows (rarely happens):
(http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6756/headacherlogoscreenieec0.th.png) (http://img441.imageshack.us/my.php?image=headacherlogoscreenieec0.png)
I got rid of the contents of the desktop because it looked crappy and I don't really need them anyways.

I've attached a 2nd screen to my old CRT, and I spent sometime looking for a nice wallpaper to meet my extended needs, and messed up with transparencies :)

I obviously don't work with this frame layout, but anyway, I think it finally looks pretty decent.  Not decent nor standard enough to be here (http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1334.0) though.

ratpoison, vimperator, urxvt with transparency, and urxvt with screen and irssi.

Title: Re: Post your screenshots !

There is no pager there.  If you mean that calendar on the corner, it's done by executing the ratpoison 'echo' command with a bunch of commands inside it.

The exact command as well as the wallpaper and some other screenshots can be found here: http://raimonster.googlepages.com/ratpoison

just about to play Metal Slug 2 with my cousing online (multyplayer) with Kaillera.
Xmame dropped kaillera long ago,so now I'm running
http://www.kaillera.com/files/mame32-067-414-ka09.exe     with Wine....
and its kaillera client works without a problem here on linux. I only had to set it up on windowed mode...
Oh and btw, It even picks up my joypad  ;D  and with sound, and almost no lag

(http://xs316.xs.to/xs316/07263/kaillera-wine.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs316&d=07263&f=kaillera-wine.jpg)

by God, Wine devs are good.

Wine also works on another windows emulator with kaillera's netplay capabilities:
JneS. So if you wanna play some old school NeS game with a friend somewhere on the other side of the world, get jnes and open it with wine (again,it picked up my usb joypad!!)

I am using VL 5.8 Standard Gold on an Omnibook 900 366MHz PII with 160MB RAM and a 6 Gig hard drive.  I use Icewm with ROX due to the fact that XFCE has trouble creating windows for some applications.

I decided to have a little fun with my desktop theme:

http://www.geocities.com/jmculv/screenvistatux.jpg (http://www.geocities.com/jmculv/screenvistatux.jpg)

I made some slight modifications to the Icevista2 theme for Icewm.  I found the tux trio online.  I have also aquired some Vista themed icons from Puppy Linux for further customization.

Thanks.  I have redone the GUI login (almost complete) to look like the Windows Vista Home Basic default login screen.  I'd post it too (just 'cause I'm so darn tickled by the looks I get at public hotspots) but I don't know how to take a screenshot of the GUI login screen just yet.

It is interesting to see how many different looks VL users can give to the same OS!

Here is a very different one of mine:

PekWM (minimalist window manager), pretty background (Lake Paltanen), fbpanel, xcdroast, Xfce Terminal:

Both PekWM and fbpanel are in the testing repository.  Note that fbpanel has a Vector Linux icon for the menu, a minor customization I did when I packaged that.  PekWM in the repository is also Vectorized, though I obviously changed the background from the standard VL Blue Rays on my system.

But I should probabbly add that I did upgrade the toolchain in 5.8 to get a fully functional Compiz-fusion build.
Compiz-fusion requires glib >= 2.4

Nice to hear that someone else is/was found of the old style XFCE when it looked more like CDE.

Now it reminds me too much of Gnome / OSX which just doesn't seem to work for me as well as Kde, Flux, etc.

Damn, I hated compiz for its dnome dependencies!! And now tht beryl and compiz are merging, we all would have to install gnome to run it? Not good...

playing chrono cross on psx- a playstation emulator which got ported for linux recently and it is rock solid.
Whats good about this emulator is that it doesnt need any settings. It doesnt use plugins, and it is compatible with almost all the games (if not all ) out there.

(http://xs318.xs.to/xs318/07326/Screenshot-chronocross.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs318&d=07326&f=Screenshot-chronocross.jpg)

chrono cross is probably the game with best graphic design and music that i have ever seen (and i've seen lots of rpg games, believe me..) If you are interested in this game, check these:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3chxhtWoSGI
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0aoPQQsDYZU

The iso files are avaiable at (im not gonna give a direct link, but hint for google) emuparadise's tracker.Same goes for bios.
If you want to have good sound in the emulator, you should set the sound settings' latency and XA latency to a higher level (mine is 63 and xa- 42) and the sound is great. Also turn on frame skipping at graphics. :P

This means that pretty soon there will be a 3d object inside cube plug in... *blury dreams*... :P

Actually, I'm not sure this is what you're referring to, but they have a plugin where it displays the glxgears inside the cube too... it's pretty sweet ;)

And I have to say, This is way better than beryl./..

I was afraid of this merger, but now I think it really did good to the beryl community...
No Gnome deps and DE independent... what else could you possibly ask for?

I am, but its lots of work for one man. The webcomic i am doing is pretty well planned, but i need to sketch up,draw,edit,etc..it takes hours for each page. This month i dont have much time..only at saturdays and sundays. people want more, but i can't keep up the needed pace to make this popular enough.. Ora- desert sun, that is..
I am also writing another cyberpunk story, thats gonna be pretty different. Already made the chara design and story ,but i am pretty much in preproduction and there is too much work on Ora to think of the next thing. I love drawing, creating stuff with my hands, somehow transfer ideas to others in a fun way.
I think that drawing depends on one's way of thinking, not on tallent.Everybody who thinks he /she can, just can do it.It only takes time.
I don't earn a dine for it, but its lots of fun, and i feel like i accomplished something.

Oh finally I can agree with someone on this discussion! I felt so alone!! People think you need some kind of divine gift, a fate, like a enlightenment. So they avoid the study, the practice and everything that involves some kind of effort. Of course, always some help of Chaos is needed, but nothing happens by itself.

BTW, that magnify tool is a built-in? I didn't notice it before.

The book or the movie (or perhaps even both?). I'm a big fan of William Gibson's work. I recently bought some more books of his at a sale at the local library :). I forgot where I put them though, so reading them is rather difficult atm :-\.

I wanted Enlightenment again and since I had no idea in what order I have to compile all the packages for e17 I decided to take a look at e16
this is the default out-of-the-box look
(http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07382/main.png.xs.jpg) (http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07382/main.png)
well except GKrellm  ;)

so the thing that I noticed first where the 2 pagers and that bar on top, as you see I have Pidgin on the first pager and then go to the second and open Firefox and a quick pull on the top bar and...

(http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07382/splitscreen.png.xs.jpg) (http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07382/splitscreen.png)

SPLIT SCREEN  :o

ok I want to play some more with it so here is one last screenshot

(http://xs119.xs.to/xs119/07382/ontheedge.png.xs.jpg) (http://xs119.xs.to/xs119/07382/ontheedge.png)
and some cool animated effects

I know all those effects are nothing compared to Compiz Fusion but my poor old CPU and Videocard can't handle Compiz Fusion so all those effects running so smoothly is amazing for me.

tm, It looks like you're having too much fun playing with choice :D.  It would be interesting to see how e17 reacts on your "poor old cpu and videocard."  I think that their intensions were to add lots to enlightenment (eye-candy too!) while still trying to keep the low resource cost aspect.  I've used the slack v11.0 e17 package from linuxpackages on VL58standard with success ( http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=10599 ).

Cheers!

two years ago I found compiled packages and an automated script in this forum and I spend the whole winter with E17 and the Snow eplet  ;D and it was great but the next winter the packes where a new version and the snow widget had permanent trees and santa and everything else was a bit worse

so E17 with Snow constantly was as fast as IceWM

thanks for the package, I'll try it when I get back from school  :D

This is my desktop running the latest XFCE with composite enabled.

(http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5607/amunradesktopfo2.th.png) (http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=amunradesktopfo2.png)

However I would say that after I installed XFCE 4.4 the desktop seems a 'little' more sluggish even with the compositor window manager tweaks off....

Thanks a lot for your kind words, rbistolfi! :)

I decied to use that as a wallpaper since it's brutal and still fits very well with the Fluxbox style (color theme) i use now.
And of course because I like Scarface and Al Pacino as an actor.

The style and the wallpaper fits perfect. The wallpaper is indeed, brutal. My favorite Pacino movie is Carlito´s way though. I think is knowed as American way too, but Scarface is a classic.
I loved that fluxbox style, very nice.

Which one do you mean, Lagagnon? I try to use the same theme, now I use a theme called Clouds which can be found at http://tenr.de (http://tenr.de) under Fluxbox Styles. :)
The transparency is that by default.  ::) Hope this helps, Lagagnon. :) The Fluxbox styles over at tenr.de are the best ones out there, I'm sure you will all find what you are searching from there those of you who use Fluxbox.

Exterdad, thanks for your feedback. :) I'm currently using a sort of similar landscape wallpaper but I will go back to the one you are talking about. It fits so perfectly for my taste. I've always liked landscape pictures and hmm... how should I put this... Naked chicks!  ;D

A little addition...

The thing I almost every day do is searching for new wallpapers and Fluxbox styles, I'm obsessed with this. :D

Okay, I'm in a good mood today. I will copy the links here for the wallpapers I found today so that everyone can use them if they like. :) Almost every picture is 1600x1200, hope this doesn't matter.
You will find that Screenshot 2 picture here as well, that is the Summerstorm one, 1600x1200. :)

If we include a wallpapers package then I think we should include all the wallpapers that we have used from past releases - maybe with the version specific details removed, or maybe not?  I think it would be a nice gesture to those that worked so hard to create them and a nod to the continuity of the work of the contributors to Vector.

Do you think I should put up a wallpaper package with the wallpapers that I currently have on my box? :)

I agree, it would be a very nice gesture for the people working with making the wallpapers for Vector and also a tap on the back so we will still get high-quality wallpapers.
I could quite easily pick out a good range of perhaps 15-20 wallpapers that I use myself right now, most of them are either 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. I have on my drive about a 250-300 wallpapers to choose between.

Any thoughts on this idea?

Currently our "VL" wallpapers that are in usr/share/wallpapers/ are part of our "vlart" package.  It contains much more than wallpapers.  It also has VL specific icons and logo's in it as well.  So messing with that package might not be such a good idea.

I see no harm with creating a additional wallpapers package that dumps more wallpapers into usr/share/wallpapers/ as well.  That way the VL ones aren't touched, and the user can decide whether or not they want your wallpapers installed.

Personally I'd install a package if you made it.  You seem to have a good eye, and a broad enough taste to suite various people.
The wallpapers that come with VL by default are nice.  But many of them are used in random screen savers (which is the way I have my screen saver).  And the wallpapers are starting to get a bit stale.  I like things stirred up a bit.
I often find myself zoning out staring at my screen saver.  Great stress relieve  :D

I think VL wallpaper collections are a good idea, though we might want to set up some guidelines to avoid inappropriate content. I packaged my lava themes a while back. It's in the 5.8 repo, but IIRC, they were version-agnostic:

I absolutely agree with you, Joe, on this topic. I wouldn't included naked women in the wallpaper package due to inappropriate content as an example.
And no political, religious or any other message in the wallpapers I would package.
I would make them from a beautiful-point-of-view, just plain beautiful.
Joe, you can perhaps give some guidelines for the content? I'm open to listen to what is required in order to make a wallpaper package.

Thanks for the nice words, I try to make a package that would be suitable for all users. :)

Please, give comments all VL users on what you think.
I have now made a rough selection of 20 wallpapers which I'm thinking about making into a package.
The package size is now around 6-7MB, is that too big or can I make it even bigger?
Additional wallpapers of 30 perhaps or even 40?

What about breaking them up into categories?  Scenic, Sci-fi, art, music etc.  Not suggesting that is what you call them, just trying to get my point acrossed.  That way a user can have a reasonable download targeted a bit better to their taste.  Someone who is after the "Kansas" or "lightning" type wallpapers might not dig "Scar face" or "Mega-death" (just a example) that much.  :D

I just wonder what is all the fuzz about wallpaper. Most of the time most is covered by some windows be it a terminal or some application. Case in point I just have a most beautiful girl in a beautiful pose as a wallpaper. Can I enjoy it? No!! She is always covered by some window. So unless I do nothing with my distro, just enjoy he beauty of my wallpaper I might as well shut down the machine and hang the picture on the wall and look at it.
My own backgrounds, say wallpaper, are in strong plain colors changing by the hour as set with rclock.

I also have not used jackEQ for much the same reason. As for VLrc1.7 it's doing very well on my laptop I just need to get a linux-friendly wireless adapter as my TRENDnet adapters (PC card and USB) are problematic.

I like to think of it as compressing ;D. To be honest though, I didn't pay a lot of attention to clipping, since I'm mostly interested in dirty sounds it doesn't really matter if it clips a little. I wasn't going to record anyways, I just wanted it to sound "right".

LOL. I should get my wallpaper framed. (small version here, contains a certain rude hand gesture (http://www.tartareandesire.com/interviews/images/darkthrone4.jpg))

Wanna tell me about the cyberpunk plot? I have a nominal interest in that genre. I even liked Johnny Mnemonic, though I won't admi...errr...nvm
The book or the movie (or perhaps even both?). I'm a big fan of William Gibson's work. I recently bought some more books of his at a sale at the local library :). I forgot where I put them though, so reading them is rather difficult atm :-\.
I like gibson too. Neuromantic being one of my favorite books.

The cyberpunk idea has changed a lot from the time i started it. At first i wanted to make a twisted version of "the wizard of oz" with the bermuda triangle/plane crash,etc... after a while i thought of another story about a boy that lives at an abandoned planet and gets to know that he is not alive anymore, and the motherbrain computer has turned him into AI software that exists inside a special server, called "EDEN".He has turned into a somewhat interacting with the outside world hollogram.. The boy then wants to get his memories from the past (the time when he was alive) ,which are stored on that machine, but another AI prevents him from accesing them... and so on
Its a short story, which stretched too much  ::)

it will turn into a great comic if i start drawing it. Unfortunatelly i can't get enough time for that and i doubt it will get me much success. Curently Ora- desert sun is still the focus of my spare time.

drawing in artrage2.5 (running on wine 0.9.50) Everything works.Tablet pressure sensitivity works as well. This app kicks so much ass, I've never used so well organised gui/features application. The guys who made it are pretty smart and the emulation of real materials is good too...
Corel painter, and the others who do that thing have stoneage interface, compared to this.

blury, IYHO, what would be a good tablet that provides good functionality for a good price?  I ask because my wife has been devoloping her photo editing skills for a couple years and I DO believe that the addition of a tablet to her arsenal would benerfit her greatly - it's just that I haven't a clue in that department.  Any help you can offer is great!

....um... I guess by "tablet" I assumed you meant something like this: http://tinyurl.com/38e2vj

or did you mean an actual Tablet PC?

well, people say wacom's are the best. I personally have tried a genius (cheaper brand) and now i have a wacom (worked hard the summer to buy it).
Dont look to buy bigger.Size doesnt matter.Big tablets are uncomfortable to use.Genius is not a bad brand, but it has its cons:
*the pen works on normal batteries, which you have to change, while wacom's pen's batteries are recharged by the surface as you draw (no need to change...ever)
*genius might have more pressure sensitivity, but it actually wears you off,as you have to press the pen harder...this wears off the wrist quickly and makes it uncomfortable to use...when as with wacom you dont have to press it.It runs smoothly..

I have a wacom graphire 4 classic XL (6x8,a5)
http://www.computerarts.co.uk/__data/assets/image/394082/art117revwacom450.jpg

I think it was well worth it
If you want to buy something cheaper, and if it is going to be for photo manipulation (not actual drawing), I'd suggest you try the volito series.I hear good things about them.

Thanks for the info, blury.  I've looked into the couple wacom models you've recommended and although the graphire seems like the better model, the volito sounds like a good place/price to start.  The only problem now is how does a person in the USA manage to get one of these things :D.  Seems the volito(2) is not being marketed/sold in the USA (from what I can tell) so I'll have to look down some other avenues; I guess the power source could be a concern as well.  Thanks for the good start... I got some investigating to do.

Cheers!

well, graphires are better than volitos,i think...easier to find too.I saw a graphire almost like mine for 80$ in ebay...but it was for the us only.. I bought mine for 300$  :( (you can imagine how hard it is to find in my country, i had to wait for them to ship it to mee,and that wasnt cheap too)
volitos are a newer model though

its cool alright. The main reason i bought it instead of genius mousepen:
Quote
Wacom tablets use a patented electromagnetic resonance technology. Since the tablet provides power to the pen through resonant coupling, no batteries or cord is required for the pointing device. As a result, there are no batteries inside the pen (or the accompanying mouse). This allows for more slender pens, and gives the pen-and-tablet combination a long and essentially maintenance free lifespan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacom

the graphire brand is marketed to the bobbyists and has been discontinued (mine being its last model) . Im kind of sorry i didnt save more money to buy a intuous model. ::) Intuous has more pressure levels and tilt-detection.

Uel,  Here's a screenshot of me viewing your screenshot.  :D  Wish my hardware was fast enough, I'd post a  "screen movie" of this so you can see the snow coming down.  It's actually a good match for the wallpaper and the kids DIG it.

One without cube

For those not familiar with the snow plugin for compiz, it's pretty neat as each snowflake has a mind of it's own as they come down.  Some even get bigger like the are coming towards you. Pretty realistic effect.  Not something I'd normally use, but "Tis the season".

I dont think my hardware is good enough for that either... I always wanted to do the video thingie, but the lightest video capture program is still heavy when you run it along compiz here
