Title: Vectorlinux 7.2 RC3 is released. One more push before final.
Post by: nightflier on July 11, 2017, 01:10:12 pm
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the dress rehearsal!  ;D  RC3 has a few little polishing touches, including a new kernel version, and a transition to the stable repositories. Assuming no new issues pop up, it will become "FINAL" in the very near future.

Get your ISO here:

Some issues which have come up during testing, that will remain the way they are:

- Transferring ISO to USB stick with unetbootin will not work. Just use dd or cp to write a USB stick.

- The ISO is not UEFI compatible. You will need "legacy" boot enabled in BIOS.

- Installing using USB 3 (blue ports) will not work. Only use USB 2 (black ports).

- The ISO is not "Live". It is used to install the distro to your hard disk.

- Automatic install will wipe your hard drive clean. If you want to preserve any data, use Advanced install.

It should be noted that if your keyboard uses USB3 ports, VL will not install. The ISO will boot to command prompt and at that point, refuse to accept input from any USB3 connected input device.

As I noted in the rc2 topic, I have not had mouse or keyboard once installed since B2 which I'm still using.  The USB ports are black. it is an older Compaq Presario that was loaded with xp when I got it, and that is gone now.

vincent2, if I understand correctly, you had to remove the memory card from a connected USB modem in order for VL to complete install. Then afterwards, I assume you re-inserted the card, and it acts as a thumb drive in addition to being a modem.

Your setup is somewhat unique, none of our devs have what is needed to duplicate your situation. However,  the issue you are describing is reminiscent of a problem we encountered earlier which involved NetworkManager and a particular combination of wireless/wired connectivity. Are you using NetworkManager to set up your Internet access?

Installed STD 32 RC 3.1 to my Toshiba satellite A100 via dvdrw

Unable to play video in smplayer ie avi or mp4 but do get sound

if by design what would I need to add and is that available in the repository?

They work on B2 but nothing later.  I've been installing the later releases to a separate directory.  The last one I installed was RC3.  I have downloaded RC3.1 and will install as soon as possible.

The problems lied on old buggy Asus
P5p41te-le  mother board, although updated bios to the latest already, still it can't Boot with memory cards in USB modem and USB car reader at all...the same memory cards with card reader can boot normally with Dell computers and biostar mb based PC s.
So Asus not that reliable, their technical teams have gone deaf at Taiwan, besides lying.
Vector users now should be careful with Asus line of products
In the end, I reformatted a USB flash pendrive and wrote rc31iso, at bios setting, lowered down overclocked intel e5700 a bit,220x16=3.52G,speed,installed rc31 on p5p41te-le mb system
Also installed nvidia driver latest.
Now run rc31 nicely...

A Taiwanese Brand now relegated as cheap mindless sweatshop products..
End user consumers be been fooled too Long, giving Asus too much  cash
Without services

Please. Enough with the corporate ranting about things you have no clue about.

ASUS products are just fine thankyouverymuch, and any issues installing to an ASUS product should be viewed as a PEBKAC issue rather than a corporate one.

When adding the orage panel clock to panel, one cannot set the background color

when you right click and select properties the option to check foreground and change color works but checking background and selecting a color has no effect.

I don't understand it!  I've installed STD RC3.1 but I have no keyboard or mouse when I reboot, either in GUI or text mode.  Everyone else seems to not have this difficulty.
I'm still using B2 to post this.  This is a Compaq Presario with USB keyboard and mouse with black connectors.
Is there something in that directory that could help solve this issue?

I feel pretty stumped myself.  :(

The one thing that comes to mind is that your setup may not load the initrd, and/or the needed modules do not get loaded for your input devices.

Brainstorming:

I think that booting from the DVD and pointing it to your root partition will not load the initrd.

Last time I used lilo, the configurator would copy the kernel of a newly added install to a directory in /boot on the partition where lilo was installed, then use it instead of the file in 'boot' on the installed system. If this sequence is not correct, you could end up with no initrd, or possibly an initrd not correct for the root partition.

I don't know your disk layout, or your risk tolerance regarding your system, so I hesitate to suggest any changes to your boot loader configuration.

Thanks, nightflier.
B2 is on sda1 with home on sdb6.  RC3.2 is on sdb1.
That makes sense.  I'll try coping intrd to sda1/boot/whatever and setting up lilo to use it.  I won't use lilo in rc3 as I don't want to lose b2 - again.

With two hard drives as you describe, it would be safe to install grub to /dev/sdb. Then you could try changing BIOS boot order to start with sdb first. If no joy, just switch back to sda and you're back to where you started.
Title: Re: Vectorlinux 7.2 RC3 is released. One more push before final.
Post by: StrayBit on July 16, 2017, 04:43:22 pm
Thanks again, nightflier.
RC3.1 doesn't have an initrd - at least in boot.  And, since I seem to be unable unlock the kernel in gslapt to make one, I'll try that.

Edit:  Opps!  That means I have to reinstall RC3.1 - but that is doable.

Post by: StrayBit on July 17, 2017, 07:06:21 am
As usual, lilo hung at 100% - left it overnight!
Trying grub...

Edit:  Unfortunately, this Presario does not listen to its BIOS boot order that well.  Even though it is supposed to boot from secondary master, it still boots from primary.  Will see if I can find a Smart Boot floppy...

.. so it sounds like the install, including grub, finished?
Title: Re: Vectorlinux 7.2 RC3 is released. One more push before final.
Post by: StrayBit on July 20, 2017, 07:49:13 am
Yes, Grub finished, but Lilo would not.  And I couldn't get any of the boot managers to work to be able to boot from sdb1.

It's a desktop computer? You could open the case and disconnect the data cable to sda.

You should know that if you're installing our bootloader to sdb1, you will also need to modify the bootloader installed to the MBR before you can boot off our bootloader.

This is typically done by adding an entry to that other bootloader to chain load into the bootsector you want to boot.  Not sure if you've done that

To sum it up, if you choose to install our bootloader to a bootsector (sda1, sdb1, etc) and you reboot without modifying the MBR bootloader, you will never see our boot options.

Thanks, nightflier.  I'll do that if all else fails.  With limited space, it will be hard.
I tried your suggestion, MOE-lnx.  Working with lilo
Quote
# -- Vector-RC3.1 on /dev/hdb1 --
other = /dev/hdb1
     label = Vector-RC3.1-sdb1
     loader=chain
     table=/dev/hdb1
yields
Quote

LILO version 24.2 (released 22-November-2015)
...
Boot other: /dev/hdb1, on /dev/hdb1, loader CHAIN
Fatal: open /dev/hdb1: No such file or directory
I've tried with hdb|hdb1 and without table.
hdb loader is grub.

Looks like you're doing this at the wrong place.
Why dont you back up and tell uswhich OS controls the bootloader installed to the MBR (the one that presents the boot menu first).  And tell us which bootloader that is.

Post your lilo.conf from your vector installation

Hopefully with that info we can point you in the right direction.

VL 7.3-STD-b2 is in sda1 with Lilo to sda MBR.
VL 7.3-STD-RC3.1 is in sb2 with grub in sdb MBR per your suggestion.  Used grub as lilo hangs on installation.
The reason for using sdb1 is that from b3 on, I have no mouse or keyboard after installation and reboot.  And I can't gslapt to unlock the kernel files to create an initrd - uh...
Would b2 initrd.gz work in lilo to bring up rc3.1?

What kernel is the working B2 using..the patched 44.27 came about that time, I think the current is 44.76 I am speculating that if the patched kernel started the issue it carried forward. for what that is worth.

RC3.1 uses kernel 4.4.76. Modules in B2's initrd would not be compatible with it.

How about posting your /etc/lilo.conf file?

That definitely won't work. Check the last section of lilo.conf, which uses outdated reference "/dev/hdb1".

I did a test setup similar to yours with two hard drives and used lilo. If you study the file below you will see that the configurator copied kernel and initrd from "boot" on sdb1 to the "/boot/tamu" directory on sda1 and use those for the boot.
Code: [Select]

Note that "vliloconf" needed some help. I had to let it run and fail the installation to MBR, then manually edit the file and run "lilo", but at least this illustrates what it needs.

And now that I think about it.. after editing lilo.conf, do you run "lilo" (as root, of course)?

Reason why I ask is that lilo should refuse to install with an erroneous lilo.conf file.

StrayBit

So just to be clear, you have VL7.2 B1 (not b2) 32 bit with kernel 4.1.18 on sda1 working well?

B2 32 bit had no keyboard or mouse and continued to current Rc 3.1?

the patched kernel offered as security update was 4.4.27 but you did not try it, instead you went with b2, which had no keyboard or mouse

If someone can confirm the B2 kernel was the same as the security posted 4.4.27 then the issue starts their.

if not you may try the update to a B1 install and see if you lose keyboard and mouse.

it is then the challenge to find what was changed in the kernel or modules that created the issue...

I install RC3.1 to sda2 with grub to sda2 and booted with dvd using linux root=/dev/sda2 ro

you could likely do the same to sdbx, I understand you did not install a bootloader...or installed to mbr

If you want to solve the lilo issue not completing during install try that after you get a keyboard and mouse. it is otherwise irrelevant.

sorry blablabla just my cent..I have two but I may need the other one.

nightflier:  When installing later images to sdb1, lilo would get to 100% and not proceed.  The reason I use sdb1 is that is what I know and do not know how to get that strange sequence of numbers except from reading lilo.conf.  I was unable to locate an initrd.gz in boot so could not use it.  And running lilo -v, as you say, produced error.

The command "blkid" will give you the UUIDs of your partitions.

If your last install to sdb1 completed when you selected grub as bootloader, there *should* be an initrd.gz in the boot dir on that partition. Now, as you want to use your lilo on sda, there is no need to install any bootloader. Re-install to sdb1 and select "none" for boot loader. If the installation finishes and you can see the kernel and initrd in sdb1, we can proceed to setting up your lilo on sda.

This actually raises more questions than it answers.

I just ran an install on a VM and it clearly creates an initrd in the /boot directory.

Straybit did say
"Reinstalled VL7.2b2 (32 bit) with/out boot loader.  Started from CD - reached login screen - NO keyboard or mouse.
I still have b1 usable."

 "linux root=/dev/sda5 ro 2"

even if straybit got RC3.1 to boot it would have no keyboard and mouse, he has not had one since B1.

Alright, that makes sense. You can install using an older version disc and a new iso, but booting into the new install from the old disc cause problems. I just tried that and got no kb/mouse.

You do need to either configure your bootloader to use the proper kernel, or boot from a disc the same version as the installed system.

It took me 3 tries to get a usable disk burned - I had to use W$10 to do it!
Amazing!  Used the text installer, as usual.  Lilo completed (WOW!) as did the rest of the install.
My only issue with the install was in setting the time zone - had to keep tapping the up|down key to see where I was in the list.
Many, many thank-yous to all of you for putting up with me through all of this.
I have a dvd/cdr that I also thought could write dvds  - apparently not.  I'll have to open the case and see what it is.  Unfortunately, it is NOT listed in ftab!

So, is your issue resolved now?  Fully working installation?

Your initial problem may have been with the hosted install (running the installer from a working Linux and selecting our ISO as an install source.)

May need a small tweak, but shouldn't affect too many users (not a lot of people are installing this way, and that provision is mostly there for development purposes rather than installing the OS)

Yes, it's working now.  Next step is to run gslapt to get the other applications i want: seamonkey, etc.
Apparently launching the install from the b2 disk is what caused lilo to freeze, no initrd.gz and, as nightflier found, no kb|mouse.
Thanks, again

Orage

with the xfce desktop panels, one can right click on the panel and select  panel/ add new item.

the dialog appears with options, select orage panel clock, the clock appears on panel.

Right click on the orage panel clock and select properties.

the clock properties options at the top of the dialog include check boxs to toggle foreground and background color. with a color selector.

checking the background box should change the clocks background, and one should be able to select a color more closely matching the panel background.

I have the panel semi transparent and wallpaper color blends but the clock background remains the image of the default panel. When it works, one can more closely match the panel color and orage panel clock color.

at one time it was transparent but of late the background color is the only option to match the panels color.

will try grip again as suggested

Thanks very much

yes, enabling compositing in window manager tweaks does allow transparency in the panel preferences/appearance

so far have not gleaned much from googles on the subject, could it be a gtk issue?

You're right, launcher is there, but pidgin is not included.  :o

The orage background issue is layers deep into xfce configuration, and not something that is likely to be addressed before release. However, a solution may be available, so keep hacking at it.

One solution is to go to settings/appearance/style and select something other than the default elementary-VL style

this allows one to change the orage panel clock background color but changes the overall style...xfce-flat is perhaps the most similar

Yes I agree that orage transparency is an upstream issue and applies to any distro using xfce.

However selecting a background color for the orage panel clock appears to be related to the default theme in vector linux named elementary-VL and is not associated with the transparency bug

Although I would not consider it reason to postpone a final release, as one can simply select any other available style, it should be confirmed and addressed in the next release.

I have not found a reason for this but have switched style from elementry-VL to several other onboard styles and the default is the only one that prohibits selecting a background color in orage panel clock properties.

I checked a few other xfce distros and although the transparent issue exists there was no issue changing background color.
Title: Re: Vectorlinux 7.2 RC3 is released. One more push before final.
Post by: overthere on August 04, 2017, 02:52:41 am
Another solution for orage panel clock background color. especially if you otherwise like the default style.

It appears that the problem with elementary-VL for the orage panel clock is caused by the usr/share/themes/elementary-VL/gtk2.0/apps/xfce-panel.rc

Adding a # in front of the line as shown below will change the panel color to a flat grey but allows then the orage panel clock background color to be changed in the clock properties

The top few lines of the elementary-VL xfce-panel.rc are as follows

Code: [Select]
style "elementary-panel"
{
xthickness = 1
ythickness = 0

# bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "Apps/xfce-panel/panel-dark.png" # Disable for normal panel backgrounds.

This change would only be required by those who would like to use the orage panel clock and desire to change the background color of the clock, while keeping the default style.
