Title: Problem with install of Vector Linux
Post by: 93EXCivic on July 20, 2017, 12:34:55 pm
I am installing VL 7.1 Light on an Asus Eee Pc (model 1005HAG). I have had issues with the login information. First time I tried to install it, it hung up during the install setting passwords. Second time, I did not create a password in order to avoid this problem. However after rebooting after the installation, it is asking for a username and password. If I enter the username I created and try to go past the password since I did not create one, it says the password is incorrect.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

I saw this thread http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=18986.0 and I tried the suggestion at the bottom and that didn't work either. How do I login as root as suggested in that thread?

Does the install finish or does it hang?

If it finishes, you can reboot using the install media and pass this argument
Code: [Select]
linux root=/dev/sdXN ro vga=normal 2
change the root argument to point to the partition you selected for /

That should get you to a text prompt where you can log in as root (and if you didn't setup a password, just press enter)

Also,
7.1 is rather old.  You should probably try the 7.2 RC's which have more updated software and bugs on the installer have been fixed

Just want to second M0E-lnx's opinion, and send you here for new isos: http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.2/iso/

Don't worry about them being in the "untested" directory, this is just where we store the files. These images are under constant tesing.

Ok thanks. Should I just download the newest of the isos for VL Light?

Yes, go for RC3.

Is there a good how to video or something on installing programs on Vector Linux? I used the sudo apt-get install.

The command line package manager in VL is named "slapt-get", and it is inspired by the debian apt tool. However, there is also the graphical utility "gslapt", which you will find on the system menu. The GUI app is the easiest one to use.

I saw the Gsplat GUI app but had no idea how to use. Is there a tutorial somewhere?
I am trying to install Firefox and Anaconda.

Sorry for the stupid questions. I am not the best with computers but I am attempting to learn a bit of Linux and Python. Right now it is kind of like drinking from a fire hose.

Any new advanced task can seem overwhelming at first, no worries.  :)

Gslapt is fairly straight forward
Start by clicking the Update button in the upper left
Type a program name or keyword in the search field and press Enter
Find the program in the list and click the box to the left of it
Select Install from the drop-down list
Click the Execute button and follow the prompts.

You won't find Anaconda there though, that is the Red Hat installer program.

Ok so I am having the following problem when I start up my laptop.

What password is it asking for? I have tried the standard password, root password and network password.

I am assuming the update button on GSplat won't work unless I am connected to the internet.

Also how do I go about installing a Red Hat installer program?

Those images indicate that the wicd daemon is not running. Supplying any password will do no good, as it won't get passed on to that service.

To troubleshoot, open a terminal and become root by issuing command "su" and enter root password. Then use:
Code: [Select]
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wicd startand see what messages appear, if any.

It is correct that Gslapt does little good without an internet connection, so you need to address that first.

Red Hat installer.. assuming you mean the Red Hat Linux package manager? It is not used in VectorLinux, as it is written for Red Hat Linux and derivatives.

Ok so it says Wicd appears to already be running. If this is not the case, the remove /var/run/wicd/wicd.pid and try again. When I try this, it says no such fille or directory. Maybe I am using the wrong command?

So is it impossible to install Anaconda on this machince with Vector Linux. I was hoping to use it to learn a little python programming.

Also is there a media player available for Vector Linux which plays Flac music files?

To see if wicd is actually running, use command "ps ax | grep wicd"

Anaconda is the system installer used to install RH from the install media. That is all it does. It is like the Vector installer, it is used once and is not available afterwards. If you want to learn Python programming, look to the Raspberry Pi PIXEL, which is aimed at exactly that purpose.

I tested FLAC with both smplayer and gnome mplayer, they both played a test .flac file without any issues.

My apologies, I just realized we were talking about two different animals.

The "Anaconda Python Data Science Platform" can be downloaded from their web site: https://www.anaconda.com/download/

I tested the 32-bit Python 2.7 installer. After downloading it, I ran command "sh Anaconda3-4.4.0-Linux-x86.sh" and followed the prompts. It installed to ~/anaconda2. Executing ~/anaconda2/bin/anaconda-navigator brought up the UI.

Looks like an impressive package, hope this helps.

I am getting the following message when I use that command.

4213 ?     S.     0:01 /usr/bin/python   -0/usr/share/wicd/gtk/wicd-client.py-t

4337 pts/0    S+     0:00 grep wicd

Is there any way to install gnome player without gsplat if I cant get it working? Also does the Spotify Linux install work on Vector Linux?

One thing at the time, we need to get your network up. According to your previous posts, the wicd daemon is not running, and you can not see the wicd pid file.

Let's make sure:
open a terminal
become root by command "su" and entering your root password
type "rm -f /var/run/wicd/wicd.pid" and press Enter
reboot

Be sure to learn "tab completion". In this case you'd type:
rm -f /va[Tab] and it will fill in the rest (/var/)
continue something like this:
rm -f /va[Tab]/ru[Tab]/wic[Tab]/wicd.p[Tab]
If it does not auto-complete, press Tab again to see if there are several choices to choose from.

So it is saying no such file or directory when i hit enter after that command.

Does the computer have an ethernet connection, or is it wireless?
