Title: Vectorlinux 7.2 final has been released
Post by: vector on August 28, 2017, 03:54:46 am
Hey gals and gents the final version of Vectorlinux 7.2 has been released and available for your installation pleasure. This release is mainly an upgrade  and bug fix release to our prior 7.1 release. The base and desktop packages have all been updated to their most recent stable releases. The kernel is the latest stable lts release for better hardware compatibility. The repo contains all the latest versions of the most used software in the linux community and much more if the system needs to be expanded. We think the base install covers most of the bases but one never knows. We have released this in both 32 and 64 bit versions and for the first time you get your choice of our light version, standard version or a live version. All of these versions are intended to be installed from a cd or dvd media unetbootin does not work so if you need to install from a usb stick you will need to manually copy or dd the iso to the usb stick. We also are not UEFI compatible so if using hardware that requires this boot mechanism you will need to change to legacy boot mode in your system bios settings. So  in summary choose standard or light for a full computer install choose the live to test hardware compatibility with our version of the linux kernel and note there is no mechanism to install the live version to your hard drive this is for testing only. The standard version is a full blown xfce desktop with all the bells and whistles with custom wallpaper and graphics. The light version is a very customized version of the icewm desktop and is intended for older hardware. I would like to thank our whole crew for making this possible been a tense couple of years for me and you carried on and did it.......woot!!

Download locations:
32 bit:
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.2/iso-release/
64 bit
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/VL64-7.2/iso-release/

you will find all the md5sums in these locations as well

Cheers,
Vec

Now that Vector Linux 7.2 is with us maybe an announcement on the webpage would be in order?

Installation hangs at gcc install.  I had to shutdown and I'm left with grub resque. Something I don't know about.

If the install does not complete, your system will be borked. Best course of action is to try another install. If the machine is low specced, try using the text installer by typing "install" on the first screen.

still runing vl  7.2 rc3.1  64 bit with nvidia vga card, already downloaded vl7.2 std final  iso long ago.....

is  it possible to update from vl72rc31 to vl72 std  final via gslapt command( mount vl7.2 std final iso, then set as source from gslapt)?

what's best commands to fulfill this task?

They're pretty much the same thing IRIC.  Just enable the 7.2 stable repos and do 'slapt-get -u; slapt-get --upgrade; slapt-get -i --no-upgrade kernel4.4 kernel4.4-modules kernel4.4-headers"
You will also need to 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' after that.

Yes, that file does not get updated... that's written at install time.  You're up to date though, so if you want to you can just ignore that.

Meanwhile, another old laptop no longer works due to VGA chipset problems... Gpg key file  is still at its hard disk,
copied the old ~/.gnupg/ folder to new home,
then
Quote
gpg -ao mypub.key --export <MY_KEY_ID>
gpg -ao myprivate.key --export-secret-keys <MY_KEY_ID>

Then imported them on the new system with:
----------------------
gpg --import myprivate.key
gpg --import mypub.key
---------------------------

end ed up no private keys,

Now I mount to this vl7.2 std machines, what's correct commands to import all keys(public and private) from this directory?

it looks fine so far...

Ralink RT3370 chip based rt2800usb Wireless Adapter takes too  long to get connected with wifi, often time out alot...have to press  lsusb, modprobe
 to make it work....
 how to fix up?
any coomands?

here'sw dmesg log:

ok....

just  installed nvidia 340.104 driver under kernel 4.4.89....
it's working fine,
any  commands to tweak more performance under xorg.conf?

I am not aware of any tweaks to xorg.conf which will increase performance of the closed source nvidia driver. Since it is working for you, my advice is to accept, and keep, the settings chosen by the installer.

There are a lot of variables associated with your USB wifi issue. With limited information, best we can do are educated guesses.

You have the correct module, the adapter does connect, so the system is handling the device as it should.

The obvious suggestion is to try getting a better signal. Can you get the radios closer together? Some times it helps to put the adapter on a USB extension cable and move it around.

They're pretty much the same thing IRIC.  Just enable the 7.2 stable repos and do 'slapt-get -u; slapt-get --upgrade; slapt-get -i --no-upgrade kernel4.4 kernel4.4-modules kernel4.4-headers"
You will also need to 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' after that.
now i still have another machine in vl7.1std 64 bit, could i  apply above commands to upgrade it from vl7.1std to vl7.2 std?

No.
That would be dangerous and is almost guaranteed to render that 7.1 box unbootable.  The upgrade will only work within the same vector version.

Meanwhile, another old laptop no longer works due to VGA chipset problems... Gpg key file  is still at its hard disk,
copied the old ~/.gnupg/ folder to new home on vl7.2 std machine,
then

====================================
    gpg -ao mypub.key --export <MY_KEY_ID>
    gpg -ao myprivate.key --export-secret-keys <MY_KEY_ID>
=====================================

Then imported them on the new system with:
----------------------
gpg --import myprivate.key
gpg --import mypub.key
---------------------------

end ed up no private keys,

Now I mount the old disk  to this vl7.2 std machines, what's correct commands to import all keys(public and private) from directory ~/.gnupg/?

According to all documentation I could find, and animated conversation with those directly involved with the gnupg project, the commands needed are as follows:
Code: [Select]
Not a typo. Seriously, "do nothing" was the only answer offered, and it was repeatedly reiterated. And yes, that's when transition from 1.4/2.0 to "modern" 2.1/2.2 was included.

I don't buy it, either. But just copy ~/.gnupg over and see if it "just works". When it doesn't, you can try posting back. The gpg and libgcrypt versions reported by gpg --version might help, but I doubt it.

It's very seriously scary to have so much data locked in for so many users with so little documentation available, most of what's there wrong, and most of all so little sense, or, frankly, ability exhibited by the GnuPG project. None of this would have become an issue at all if they knew what versioning or planning are at all, or at least had a vague idea of what "upgrade path" might mean.

Hope it works as advertised for you, because after that there is only straight-up guesswork and trial-and-error. Nothing else is available.

Web search indicates that GnuPG enforces private ownership of the folder and some files for security reasons:
