Title: [Solved] Tray notifier ?
Post by: t'web on May 13, 2007, 04:39:11 am
Hello;

Is theire an email notifier available for 'Vector Linux 5.8 Standard'.
Something that periodically scans your mailbox and displays the incoming messages ?

If you're using XFCE (default with 5.8-Standard), try right-clicking the panel (taskbar) and choosing 'Add New Item' - you'll see 'Mail Watcher' in the list of plugins.

Will it work with web-based email like Yahoo or Gmail?  Or do you have to use desktop-based email like Thunderbird?

Sorry for opening this topic again. But I can't figure out how to check my Gmail account via the Xfce4-mailwatch-plugin. They all say it is supported, but I can't seem to chose Gmail. The only available options are:
- IMAP
- POP3
- Maildir Spool
- Mbox spool
- MH Mail folder

No gmail... And if I search Google, there has to be a seperate choice for Gmail in there somewhere. Anyone found it?

I'm using the stock 5.8 Standard install with Xfce4-mailwatch-plugin 1.0.1

Gmail is pop3... You need to ensure POP is turned on in your account first.

Here are the settings you'll need to use in order to set everything up.

Thanks for the reply, but isn't pop3 just for retrieving/sending mail? Cause if I configure it like that, my mail will be forwarded to another application.

I just want to have it checked, and than go online if any e-mail has arrived...

If you look at Features, there has to be another option especially for Gmail to I think.

pop3 is just a protocol for "talking" with an email server; it does not have to transfer anything.  Thus, you can connect to a server, count the number of messages (i.e. new messages, read messages, etc..) and then disconnect from the server - this is all done automatically.  HTH.

It is correct that Gmail is checked using the pop3 protocol, but it is done over a secure connection (TLS/SSL)  If you are using the notifier released with the iso, you need to upgrade it from the repo to the latest one, which was built with support for such connections.

I really understand it now, but I'm still doing something wrong I guess
- Mail server: pop.gmail.com
- With standard Pop3 port: 110 > no go
After reading google manuels, they said put it to 995, I did > no go
My error log:
- Connection reset by peer
- Bad file descriptor

I have no option in the plugin to chose for 'secure connection', although 'unsecure connection' is grayed out. The newest plugin in the repo is perhaps in /testing ? The one I'm using is 1.0.1.

It's not a newer version, rather a re-build.

Good news, as I thought, in the re-build version is a seperate option for Gmail.

Thanks Joe!! You're my hero once again :)
