i was surprised to see that we dont have blender in our repo.

Just when i wanted to try and learn to 3d  :'(

blurymind, blender is real easy to install, they have a tarball that contains a built & ready to go blender:
http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.44/blender-2.44-linux-glibc232-py24-i386.tar.bz2

Just untar it to your homefolder or something, make a shortcut on your desktop and you're ready to go.

I'm not sure what you mean with "I just wanted to learn 3d", but it's got sort of a weird interface if you're used to Autodesk Autocad and Autodesk Inventor like me. The other way around is probably true as well.
Expect a steep learning curve, there's sooooo many options, I doubt there's anyone who knows what they all do. It's jolly good fun to play with though ;D, even if you never make more than 50 frames of animation.

I have blender up and going on my vector box, just untaring the binary from blender.org. I am learnig to use it. Like Headeacher I am used to Autodesk apps and is not easy. There are great tutorials, like <a href="http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro>"blender from noob to pro"[/url]. But the app is geting realy great since the Orange Project. If you didnt yet, check the new tools since v. 2.43, I think Blender will be the best 3d app in the market one day, even better than the discreet tools.

PS: There is another "open movie project" going, like "Elephants dreams", called "Plumiferos", developed in Buenos Aires, have you seen it? Looks great and I think can give a big push to the gnu project. An entire movie developed with open source soft! Could be great if the movie have success.

Also,what 3d app do you think is best for a newbye,with an easy learning curve?

Is cad or 3d max a better choice?

I think cad is more user friendly, but keep in mind 3dmax have a lot more advanced features in rendering and textures, and it shares a few conventions with other 3d apps, and with the big brothers like "Inferno".There is a "new" open source app made in java called moonligth 3d, I didnt give it a try yet, and there is couple really easy but very simples, like swift 3d. It is nice to easily animate and have a flash exporter, and can import cad and 3ds. Keep in mind there is no really easy tool yet, I am playn with this since two years and still a noob, but may be I am just slow to learn  ;) Is true blender have a hard interface, but once you get it is great, really easy to find the tool you are looking for.
