Title: We now have a chat room!
Post by: vector on June 09, 2007, 06:23:07 pm
I found a little chat room program for this forum software so i grabbed it and installed............. ;D
It's pretty basic but it works. Look at your top navigation bar you should see chat there as long as your using the boards default theme. I found that right clicking on the chat button and choosing to open in new window was the best so you could go on with your forum business and also see if someone came into chat. Have fun!!!
cheers,
Vec

wow, vec! that sounds like fun and an improvement to the already great forum!
A nice way to have more direct contact, looks useful if some people have and urgent problem and maybe someone on the chatroom can help.
Thanks!

Looks like the chat room was short-lived.

FlashChat looks nice  :)

Indeed, it does look nice. But do we really need 4 more chatrooms? now we have a total of 6 rooms (including #vectorlinux and #vectorlinux-admin). My suggestion is to cut down to 1 or perhaps two. otherwise we'll just drown in empty chatrooms.

the new flashchat is in you should see a chat button in the navigation bar of this forums default theme. Looks like ill have to do it manually for the other themes........:(
have fun!

If you are interested, the current Flash-based chat does not work with SWFDEC.

Is there any way to make this connect to #vectorlinux on irc.freenode.org?

IMHO, it would be a lot better, that way we can concentrate our efforts to help users better.

I know for a fact this can be done in Java, (But dont know any java proggramming).

Just a thought

i was about to say its a bit heavy, but when i saw you payed for it,just wanted to say how glossy and nice it looks. :)

This might be choppy internet, but am i the only one who gets kicked out of the chat randomly and prompted for user/pass? :-\

You are rigth moe, but I think is nice to have a chat integrated to the forum.

Right... nice and all, but it would much nicer if we could port users though this site to talk to #vectorlinux in freenode.
It would be much easier to keep all of our eggs in one basket, keep our small team of people who are willing to help new comers easily, And it would also be nice because user's dont have to look in 3 places for help, click on "chat" here, and you're getting the help from the same place.

They connect the web chat to the IRC channel on www.tvtorrents.com - #tvtorrents - guy that goes by Johan runs the thing.  Maybe he would be willing to help out or give a pointer or two.

For the record, I have never downloaded anything to which I did not have copyright permissions.  ;D

I agree with you, I have not java skills neither, but I can do a little inet reaserch and see what can I find.

--EDIT: After a while, no results. I found just one mod that works with http://irc.everywherechat.com/ but no one with freenode  >:(

Here is one that works with freenode http://www.jwirc.com/chat.html

dunno if it's possible to implement that or embed it into a page to connect just to #vectorlinux

...and it's also bloated and slow, compared to IRC.

Looks nice, but I cant find any reference to the source or the author of the applet. I will try to find it again later.

EDIT-- I get it now  :-[ I will take a look

Of course it does, but if we found a way to port it all the way down to #vectorlinux, then you can use any IRC client, and get the same thing...

I just wish I knew some Java right about now

looks like Arch Linux has a nice web client setup and working on freenode: http://archlinux.us/irc.html
May be worth a look.

Nice
<applet width="100%" height="700" code="IRCApplet.class" archive="irc-unsigned.jar,pixx.jar"
codebase="http://java.freenode.net/freenode/pjirc/">

EDIT:
As a matter of fact, if you go to http://java.freenode.net you can type in your nick and connect to any room in freenode..

This could actually be the path to something good

I just entered #vectorlinux from there... and it's fairly decent

and at the  bottom of that page can't help seeing this

I hate to say this, but that chat applet rots.

well, I think every java applet does. It will slow down almost every system a lot. But looks like is the only solution, if we want to integrate irc with the forum.
Anyway, a java applet is easy to integrate, we just need to paste the code on this page.

i'd say find the lightest client possible. Java is lighter than flash, but ajax is even lighter. A friend wrote a chat client in ajax, that integrates well with the forum (show how many users are in forum in the chat, integrate user accounts from forum in the chat)... the only con is that it doesnt use irc,so it cant be bridged with vecs irc channel.

http://teli.no-ip.org/ajax/client.html

note:
*this demo is not bridged to the forum.to see a fuller version, check garbagewars.com/forum  -->chat
*its on a slower server,so it might load pretty slow
*the server that it is hosted is a home vector server. My friend is willing to put it at google code as gpl, its extremely simple and light...but it has a few things to iron out or add.

I never said anything about google code, the code is not worth it
this piece of crap is free for the taking

The chat applet is not Java-based. It is Flash-based. Java isn't always that bad actually.

well, at least java is open source and well, flash isnt and i dont think it will be  soon...

Java is lighter than flash too...and there are a few very good java clients that are free and will do the trick.

Ops! Sorry, I thougth you was talking about the one moe suggested to replace the current. We are looking for an irc client that can connect with #vectorlinux at freenode.

I would think something like this would do the trick http://paste.uni.cc/16305

All that is is a ripped version of arch's interface.. that one would connect to #vectorlinux

that code works from here! I guess we could use it embebed on the forum, should be something like

Code: [Select]
elseif ($_GET["action"]=="chat") {
echo '
//moe´s html goes here

}

in the smf index.php, what do you think?

So far CGI:IRC is the lightest-weight web client I can find: http://cgiirc.org/ - I'm just not sure about freenode support but it sure seems like it'll do it without any problems.

yeah, but -i was reviewing this- we need to deal with the smf code, may be is better idea to give the web chat a look like the default theme and put a link in the forum.

Glad to see this discussion.  I logged into the chat room once and it ran slower than molasses running uphill in the wintertime.  I logged out again.  Of course, since it's just an IRC channel I can use xchat and not go in through the browser, but... a fast browser-based interface that doesn't use Flash or Java sounds great to me.

Perl is good for you  ;D

Dang.. I can't access that from my work comp. (damn proxy filters)

But I guess it would be good, so long as it can be embedded in a page here at the forums, that way the proxy wont block me either ;)

The first thing I thought was:

The second thing I thought was:
"There's no way this can have decent real time performance."

And that's unfortunately true... :(

sorry, moe, I have no permissions to change things, and I have no authority to make a decision, so, the only things I can do is give my opinion and offer my tiny skills to you and the others members of the community.  :'(

So, is your suggestion a java based one? Keep in mind there is no way to have a web client so good as a desktop or console irc client.

A twist to that solution is to point the link to a web based jirc hosted on this server. The advantage of that is we can make a setup to have #vectorlinux on freenode.net as default irc server. The html provided by moe has a feature to do that.

So, is your suggestion a java based one?

It would run on the client side, so it may work better.

The editor I now frequently use instead of Vim, jEdit, is also Java-based and it works quite well.

I can see your point and is well taken. A little thing still bothers me with a java client, the user with no big resources will experience a heavy slowdown on the system, once the vm is launched and all the things needed are loaded into ram, everything works well, as you said. But until the app is launched, the system is almost locked (at least in my experience). I can leave with that, but may be others can't.

You could add the code I suggested to a page that's themed like the VL Forum, and that way, the user doesn't even need to click another button, the code assigns a temporary nick "Guest##" to the users that way they go straight into the chat room

That java applet is great!
Nice work on that!  ;D

BTW, is anyone else having trouble getting nickserv to identify passwords? I can't get it to identify mine when using the applet. :-\

Sweet!... it works great and also looks really kool.

It's good for newcomers. Some people believe it or not are new at IRC too, but there are some of us who spend lots of time on IRC, so this would allow them to get faster responses right from the forum.

I know nothing about IRC.  And don't think I would of bothered to install and set up a client just to chat.  So I'm sure there are many other people with the same feelings.  This way there is no excuse.

Once again, great job!

Guess what, I can't use it with Firef0x either. Might have to do with me updating it yesterday though. Works fine in Konqueror :).

Since we have this now, shouldn't we get the other (flash) chatroom removed?

I hate chat rooms, so I won't be there. But it's good that we have it for those who like it.

well, I was looking into this, I tested the thing in several boxes and browsers, it didnt work once on firefox. Looks like some builds of 2.0.0.4 are not java friendly. I was unable to fix the problem, so, if anyone have a clue, please post it here and i will follow it. Some problems with Adblock and others ff extensions has been reported, and you need java > 1.1. Some troubles also has been reported using % in the w and h attributes of the applet tag, wich is the current on our chatroom.
Anyway, I think the chatroom is for those who dont have a client working at the moment for any reason, or for those who are not used to irc. It works well most of the time. Just for the record, if you have an irc client and you want to join the channel, just type /server irc.freenode.net, and then /join #vectorlinux
happy chating...and vectoring, of course  :)

Heh....
Just goofing off; Entered the room with "BOO!" when only V3©to® (appears to be a regular member, not Robert) was in and he immediately logged off...
Like I scared him away.

"waiting for www.vectorlinux.com"

The web site menu now has two links, "chat" and "chatroom". How about changing "Chatroom" to "IRC"?
