Title: take two minutes to support open formats
Post by: Triarius Fidelis on June 15, 2007, 11:13:06 pm
There is an online petition for one of my favorite news sources, Sveriges Radio, to distribute their podcasts as Ogg Vorbis. They have a major role in producing Network Europe as well, and I guess they are quite well respected abroad as such. Hey, I sent one email to Banns Radio asking them respectfully to drop WMA, and it succeeded (http://www.euroaudio.dk/sound/cc/0607/080607copcall.mp3), so none can say what we can do together.

It's really easy to sign. For 'Förnamn', put your first name. For 'Efternamn', put your last name. And for 'E-post', put email address. (Those who have an appropriate Postnummer will know what to do with that field.) There's a checkbox that says: "Ja, visa mitt namn i listan nedan", which is asking you if you want your name to appear publicly in the list below. (Email will not be revealed.)

That's all. 359 signatures so far. Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully, they are not a band but a news gathering organization.

However, they play music sometimes on at least their English radio broadcasts. Most of it is terrible, but there are a few gems like The Knife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Knife).

If the change to Ogg Vorbis goes through, it may hopefully be influential on others.

Jag vill gärna se det...

BTW, as you may already know I've been building aspell dictionary packages to improve VL language support.  So... if I build one for Sweedish can I count on you to test it, Hanumizzle?

Tnx,

Certainly. In fact, I downloaded it myself, not so much to build it as to use it to check those ambiguous -ar or -er plurals. (My dictionary doesn't have them. ::))

Hey guys, look at the list of people who signed the petition. It could very well be that Per Persson, Chair No. 5 of the Swedish Academy (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Academy) has signed. Hopefully, Göran Per-Göran Per-Nils-Göran Per Persson and P3r 90r4|\|330|\| will soon also weigh in on this matter.

Thank you!  I always feel funny packaging something I can't test.

Would you like your original post (the one asking for signatures) quoted in full on my O'Reiilynet blog or is that overkill?

Blurbs seem fitting, but perhaps not the whole post. Actually, you may want to reference the true original post, where I found out about the petition to begin with (link (http://linux.nu/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=9581&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0)).

Quote

"We reckon that Radio Sweden [should use] the open and free format Ogg Vorbis for their Internet broadcasts instead of the closed formats RealMedia and Windows Media. By using Ogg Vorbis, [it will be possible] for all to use Radio Sweden's broadcasts regardless what operating system they [want to??]* use."

Of course I leave it to your discretion.

* The original text used "de valt", which is a little different from what I wrote, but it doesn't make sense to me, even after adding 'ha', so I'll assume it's a typo.
