Title: VL wallpapers
Post by: blurymind on September 06, 2006, 03:18:44 am
Nice way to spread the news about vector is vie wallpapers. Some guy is flooding kde-look and xfce look with pclinuxos, zenwalk and etc wallpapers. That kinda annoys me, because I dont oftenly see VL wallpapers there.
=============
if you want to make a wallpaper yourself, you can easily do so with teh gimp (http://www.gimp.org) and with these materials:

and fonts

I think maybe we could make it all fit together with one nice approach I saw today:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=35341

This tells me one thing: What if we made it all Liquid. That rocks! The letters are awesome! The Linux Power letters I mean...

Really like that... could we have something with Vector on your blue wallpaper like that Blurrymind? Would be great!
Just a thought, but if we could make the font of the menus also like this fluid lettertype, it would help the consistency a lot, don't you think?

Confirmed. It is the vision of how Vasm could look like by one of the writers at www.madpenguin.org.  AFAIK Hanu is busy writing perl scripts. Not making a fancy GUI. That is not important right now either.

Here's the page it was first seen:

I don't know about you all, But IMO, this should be the default wallpaper for Dynamite... or SOHO, or at least one of the releases...

I gotta hand it to blurrymind... He's good

Have to agree MOE, Blurryminds latest wallpapers look awesome! They are it!

Maybe you can make one for Standard to, with the text: Standard instead of SOHO...

Checking those fine ones I doubt if I should post anything.
Bravery.....
So, some "playaround"  - a bit more photo and oldmood centered -: salmonix.extra.hu (http://salmonix.extra.hu) Maybe a bit reserved... the berried is very grandma's - like the colours in the Chasse aux papillons of Joseliani.
Maybe I should change concept - more metallic.

so,what sign do you want me to add under the vector logo for the std edition?
"vector Linux"
 standart edition

or

"vector Linux"
 when choice matters

I can easily add that. :) I have the xcf file somewhere.
Title: Re: VL wallpapers
Post by: M0E-lnx on September 14, 2006, 12:50:38 pm
I'm not sure how necesary it is to have one for "std" and another for "soho" and another for "dynamite".

IMO, one should be enough... after all, the user gets to change it whenever he/she wants. There is already the existing wallpapers that ID each release (I believe).

If blurymind's wallpapers don't make to be the default VL wallpaper, at least should be shipped with every release, because they just look awesome.

thas a great one blurymind!  ;)

just one thing, if the wallpaper is going to be a final one it might be nice to upload a high res one as well (eg: 1600x1200) to your host because 1024x768 loses quality when used on high resolution desktops. i'm using 1280x1024 at the moment and that wallpaper does lose a lot of its appeal when it gets very streched.

do you have to redo it completely? cant you use gimp to scale the image? scaling a jpg image distorts it, but if you scale your original project it shouldn't lose quality i guess....

Damn! Blurrymind.. I think you're the Wallpaper God or something like that. Did you eat Cornflakes the last few days, or does it all happen when you dream it will?

Really like the drops to.. Maybe we can have a bundle of wallpapers packed with VL6, and at boot/install/first runtime you can chose. Wouldn't that be great? For everyone something different, because choice matters ( ;) MOE)  :D

Keep it up man! And contact a dev or someone, to include it if possible.

I dont know why,but the drawing of a rocket fits so well with this distro in my mind... btw, the original wallpaper is by dmitri popov (ist gpl too)... I just fixed the colors and added vl logo. ::) I got the original rocket idea from it.
Maybe the splash screen for the soho... with a silver-ish rocket...hmm

Title: VL Artwork Repository
Post by: JohnB316 on September 16, 2006, 10:24:34 am
In reviewing this thread (and inspired by blurymind's earlier post in this thread), I've seen so many great wallpapers and works of art. As a result, I've started an artwork repository at the main VL FTP site at http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/vl-artwork (http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/vl-artwork). It's empty at the moment. However, those of you who wish to create artwork for VL and want it to go into the VL artwork repository, please create an ssh key on your box using the following instructions if you haven't already done so:

========
For Linux:
1) Open a terminal.
2) Type ssh-keygen -t rsa at the command prompt. A public-private key pair will be generated.
3) You will be prompted for a passphrase. While not absolutely necessary, it's a good idea to have one.
4) The public key file will be saved in a text file located at ~/.ssh/rsa_id.pub.

If you need to use a Windows box to access the site via SSH, PuTTY is the recommended SSH client.

1) Use PuTTYgen to generate a key pair. The key pair needs to be SSH-2 (either RSA or DSA will be fine).
2) Click the Generate button in the PuTTYgen window and follow the prompts.
3) Once the key is generated, copy the key from the part of the PuTTYgen window marked "Public key for pasting into SSH authorized_keys file" and paste it into the body of an e-mail (plain text format, please).

Once you have generated the public key (whether via VL, another Linux/BSD, Mac OS X or Windows), e-mail it to me at johnb316 at gmail dot com as a file attachment (preferred). If you have to put the key in the body of the e-mail (the case with PuTTYgen), use plain text as your e-mail format. Since I get a fair amount of e-mail daily, format your subject line like this:

VLforumname - SSH key (art)

I need to see the word "art" in the subject so that I give you correct instructions for access to the repository.

Cheers,
JohnB

Dont you think its a good idea to post these instructions as a sticky thread in this artwork section? Hello. I hope that I may reply here and add an addition, rather than start a new post. I would like to say, first of all, that I have been following Vector Linux's each release for a long time, rather silently (although making a mention of it, to quite a few Linux fans). I have always been impressed with each release.

Now I'd like to make a contribute of a wallpaper. I am no Picasso, just one of those wannabe's :). I posted it onto KDE-Look. I hope that you like this one.

Masta,

I like that wallpaper too. If you can tweak the text so that it appears in the Denmark font face, it would be very helpful, since that's the basic font we use for our branding. You can find it here if you need it: http://www.grsites.com/exec/public/fontview.cgi?dir=d&fn=DENMARK

Thanks very much,

Thanks for the tip on the font. I did wondered about that when I was making it, now I know :). I didn't save the xcf of the original, so I ended up redrawing it. It doesn't quite look the same, but in some ways might look better (or worse). It is smaller in file size, that could be a bonus. I hope you like this new version. I am on my way to kde-look to update it.

Nice work |nick|

Observation: Maybe the VL logo should go on the bottom right corner, as the top left is by default populated with icons.

I've been working on a series of these. The better (my opinion) of the ones I have been working on are as follows:

When I can get a chance at a later time, I will upload some xcf files into the artwork repository. I Hope you guys and gals like these two.

blurry, I just checked out your rocket ship bg. Wow that so kicks!! I was thinking that you might put the "Vector linux because choice matters" in the lower left hand corner done in a pen font... sort of going with the engineering theme. There is some really nice art here. props to all!

Its actually a child's drawing,released under gpl.
I really admire the idea behind the small silver rocket in retro art design. I dont know why,but i've always pictured vector as one.
slackware's classics in the type of a rocket.

I will draw a vector linux rocket and if the design is good enough i will scan it.

If there was an alternative to the good old V 3d logo infront of the flat earth,I would deffinatelly pick a silver rocket with a V(L) logo on its one side and the slogan, circleing around it in small fonts. :o

I really love the latest wallpaper designs. They are indeed good additions to Vl's design department.  :)

It's the alien neon script-fu (alpha to logo) in GIMP.  Alien glow is another good one.  I just worked on a copy of the text, and used only the bands.

The GIMP is really cool!

i'm using big_blue-vec-1 for my desktop wallpaper. The logo is placed on the lower right where it doesnt detract from desktop icons-- that's important to me. By the way, on the toolbar, what is the wireless card with 5 red dashes under it, does that mean wireless is ready but unconnected?

Also, what exactly does "Because Choice Matters" mean? I'm sure it means many things to different people, but if some random person asks, how do I explain it. Does this saying have historical basis in Vector philosophy? I can see the slogan has meaning for Linux generally, but what does it specifically say about Vector, that Vector is yet another choice? I'm not criticizing, just wondering.

Suggestion: get out a math book, and tranfer some vector mathematics graphics to the wallpaper. Like maybe a globe represented in latitude and longitude lines, with a big wide arrow following the grand arc of aircraft travel. Or some cartesian system with vectors eminating from the origin. Or a big arrow coming in from infinity.

I've been trying to do something like that for a long time, but couldn't get anything worthwhile. I thought about using one of the 3D maths functions graph tools, but didn't find an appropriate equation. The old VL4 wallpaper was cool in this respect, but there is no original file to rework it and even the author is unknown.

I've always been a bit of a minimalist when it comes to my desktop, especially with VL. This screenshot of my IceWM desktop is something I've always loved. A really NICE graphic for the wallpaper, then little else to clutter the screen. It would be nice to have something similar out of the "box" for the new distro. ;)

What software did I use, or what procedure?

Just Gimp with the standard filters.

I drew a map, used the jigsaw filter to make it like a puzzle.  Cut a couple pieces out and set aside.  Used the map object filter to make it a sphere.   Used motion blur for the flying puzzle pieces.  The golden "V" is the same V from the "vl_shine_essentials" download.  I just desaturated, inverted the colors, ran the stretch contrast.  Then did a gradient map with gold.

Of course lot's of trial and error was in the mix as well.  ;D

(http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2549/vlwave2fajr6.th.jpg) (http://img251.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vlwave2fajr6.jpg)

The wave is based on a public domain photo (http://www.pdphoto.org/PictureDetail.php?mat=pdef&pg=5567) from www.pdphoto.org.  I kept moving the logo up and down ... not sure I've got it in just the right spot.  I also took some liberties with the saturation (especially greens and yellows) of the logo.

Here's the source (bzipped xcf, 3.6 MB): http://www.mytempdir.com/1306379
Title: Re: VL wallpapers
Post by: exeterdad on April 24, 2007, 04:04:01 am
incognu....

I really dig that paper!  I took it for a testrun and the softened background looks really good behind my icons.  Very easy on the eyes.  And with all due respect to the logo creator...  I like the colors of your globe.  It's glassy but not too bright.  Very classy IMHO.

Edited to add...

I meant to add that there are some pretty incredible wallpapers in this thread.  I wish I had that kind of creativity.  I wanted to comment on them the other day but they were posted before my time with this board.
Title: Re: VL wallpapers
Post by: incognu on April 24, 2007, 03:48:23 pm
Thanks, exeterdad!

I like the higher saturation in the "real" vl globe.  But, after I'd blurred and heavily reduced the saturation in the photo,  I felt the logo should be less saturated also to match the background.

The source included the unblurred original photo plus the fully saturated VL logo, if anyone wants to play with it.

[edit] Here's a version with the unaltered logo and the original (resized) photo:

Super Job!!
I really like this one myself.
I hope you don't mind, but I took that and went a few steps further with it, with the attempt to give it a more 3D look, and tried to give the text a look as though they are of molded gold pieces. Finally, I gave an additional light-glow effect to fit with the lighting on the objects. I hope that I didn't kill it's original beauty too much.

Sorry, I did it only in 1280x1024 resolution. It's possible to upscale it but Im afraid it would look crappy. :-/
Thanks for the comments so far uelsk8s, exeterdad, dweeberkitty and easuter.

1680x1050 wallpaper
(http://xs125.xs.to/xs125/08110/vlglobe179.jpg.xs.jpg) (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs125&d=08110&f=vlglobe179.jpg)
I accidentally deleted the original .psd file so I started to rework on this. I think the new version ended up not being as good so I just chose this used to be w.i.p wallpaper preview I took. Similar graphics style might end up being used in future VL website theming, without the metallic maccish factor.

Hope you enjoy.

Now that is a fun wallpaper, perhaps you could do versions of it with different parts of the globe showing, ie have  3 or 4 globes from different aspects....

I don't know virtually anything about gimp, but how would wallpapers following these ideas be?
1. simple but not plain blue background with the Vector logo, along with the text: "Stable, Quick, Vector"?
2. different OSs depicted as huge lumbering ships and Vector as a speedboat?
3. a twister filled with all of the different things in a standard Vector release such as KDE, OpenOffice, Konquerer, etc with the small end going into the logo, "How on earth did we get all this stuff into such a little package?"
4. an old computer, an Eee PC, or something: "I may be slow, but I can still run Vector as fast as the rest".

just some ideas, based on what I know of VL so far.

like I said, I'm not really good with gimp/PS, and things are a bit hectic here at the moment.

Anybody know where's the VL font? (with which the "when choice matters" is written)
There's a link on the first page of this thread but it's not valid anymore.
Thanks.

Everything is green and growing right now. The fields are fleshing out and I decided to go take a few pics outside the house last night. You can use them for wallpapers. I know, not exactly VL related except that they were downloaded to a VL computer using digkam on 5.9 SOHO  ::)

Oppsies! I guess PhotoBucket doesn't like to store my photos at full resolution. Here are the full unscaled images:

I just made a lilo bootsplash (http://boxstr.com/files/2864854_ys7GW/liloBootsplash5.bmp).

I'm curious if it would fit anyone else's configuration  :P

do you need a configuration mapped into it?

also, I am wondering about the DSL thing in there, not understanding that one, but reminds me of another distro...

No, I mean if the tech details and the OS's match. If someone else has the same laptop and OS's on it.
