Title: [SOLVED] Lexmark printer support
Post by: jimwill on July 23, 2007, 06:02:56 am
I've been running VL 5.8 SOHO since it was released and am very pleased with it. Except I cannot print to my Lexmark X1185! to say nothing about using the scanner!

I can get the printer to do a reset with the provided drivers, but that's all, no print.

Has anyone managed to get lexmarks linux drivers (from their site) to install and work? What about the z600 driver I've seen mentioned in various places? Is it available as a package for vl?

If I can't get the printer,at least, to going then I'll have to abandon vl, and I don't want to do that!

Thanks Bigpaws. That works up to this point.

Try:
Quote
rpm2targz name-of-rpm-here.i386.rpm

Instead of the alien command.

The correct CUPS Lexmark drivers at their website for that printer will work but you need to use the rpm2tgz command to convert the .rpm file to a .tgz file. You then install the .tgz file with the command: "installpkg nameofpackage.tgz" (run as root in a terminal). Then you must reboot the machine (from my experience) and then get into CUPS (Printer Administration or point your browser to http://localhost:631) and you should see that LexMark printer driver in the list.

Please don't abandon VL, you would honestly be better off abandoning that printer  ;)

You should be able to get the printer working well. If you need more help after following exeterdad's and lagagnon's suggestions, let us know. I have a Lexmark X1270 all-in-one and the printer is working perfectly after I followed the steps posted on this forum before the reorganization wiped out older messages. I hear they are being restored. I do have a copy of the directions I followed, so let me know if you need them.

For the scanner, look at http://www.sane-project.org/ . Yours is listed as having "basic support" at http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-LEXMARK . The scanner in my X1270 is a lost cause, alas.

Woohoo! Got it working!  ;D

Thank you exeterdad and lagagnon!

Now I gotta go find out about samba sharing! :(
Can't get winderz xp to accept the network print - I'm sure it's something simple I've overlooked!

If'n one of you admin types want to mark this as solved, go right ahead!

( at least I get to keep vl on this machine now!  ;D )

Glad you got it working!  You'll find that printing and (ahem) Samba are among the trickiest things in Linux to set up.  But you've whooped one out of two!

You can easily mark it [SOLVED] by clicking the edit button on your first post of this thread.  Then modify the subject line.  :)

Aww- come on. Everyone deserves to be lazy or snooty occasionally!  ;D

Thanks again!
