Title: Can't start the X server..
Post by: RTrev on August 01, 2007, 10:16:53 am
A friend turned me on to Vector, and I grabbed the latest live CD to try it out.  I can log in, but any attempt to startx or startxfce4 results in a fatal I/O error 104.. could not connect to X server.

I don't think my setup is exceptionally weird.  I've got an nvidia 7300 GT card with 512M on board, dual digital outputs, and normally run Twinview on a couple of identical flat panels.

Other Live CDs have no trouble with this setup.   My normal distro is Ubuntu, and I just get the nvidia driver, issue a couple commands, and Twinview is up and working fine at 1680x1050 (times two).

I could get the install CD instead of the Live one, install to disk, and try to get the 9631 nvidia-glx driver which works fine with this setup.  Think that might cure my problems, or am I looking at something weirder than that?

Thanks,
Bob

why dont we start by posting your complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Also, what happens when you run vxconf as root??
Does it pick up the card?

and maybe try editing your xorg.conf to use the vesa driver to get things started...

I would suggest just installing the nvidia driver on the live cd to test things

Most likely your problem is the nvidia driver

so if you know which driver makes your card tick, download it and install it, you may be able to get away.

you may need to slapt-get --install your kernel sources to be able to compile/install your nvidia drivers

Okay, thanks.. I'll log in with the live CD again and get that info.. experiment with the drivers, etc.  I do have a little problem, though, in that I have no way to capture or copy/paste any info for later posting here.. since I can't do anything much yet on the live CD in terms of browsing, etc.  Hopefully once I get the driver installed I'll be able to either report the problem as solved or at least get enough of X running to allow browsing back to here.  :-)

Noob warning: kind of new to Linux in general, so perhaps over my head with downloading sources and compiling.  Is Vector designed for folks with a bit more experience that I have?

Thanks,
Bob

Restart computer. Select linux-tui option from LILO OS Selection (menu with penguin logo). Log in as root, enter root password. At command prompt, type "vasm" without quotes, press Enter. Re-configure X server (video) through VASM:

1. select XWINDOW, enter OK
2. select XCONF, enter OK
3. probe for video hardware and mouse? enter YES

to exit:
4. select DONE, enter OK
5. select EXIT, enter OK

to reboot:
7. at CLI (command prompt), type "shutdown -r now" without quotes, press Enter

No joy.  It's weird.. it says hang on a second while it tests the X configuration, and then it says it's fine.  But startx always results in the fatal error 104.  I checked the xorg.conf, and it looked fine.. it had identified the correct PCI bus number, identified the monitor, etc.

I need to read the docs before proceeding.  I used "slapt-get --search nvidia" and it found one legacy driver, which I thought might be better than nothing.  But "slapt-get --install" with the exact info returned from the search says there's no such package found.

I think I'm in a bit over my head here, but will get the full docs and see what I'm missing on the package manager.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Of the many distributions I have tried, VL 5.8 SOHO is just about the only one to load nVidia drivers, where I get the green and white nVidia logo when I boot up. If youre using VL 5.8 Standard, you might try SOHO instead. You wont find a faster KDE-based system.

Okay, I'll give the SOHO a shot.  Gonna be a while though with my download speed.  :)  Thanks!

No joy with SOHO either.  So, the X server won't run, and it can't find my network connection.  I think, with my level of knowledge, that I'm pretty much hosed.   :'(

The motherboard is a Machspeed MSNV-939, with the NVidia nForce 4 Northbridge Chipset.  I don't recommend this board, as they claimed it would support 4G of DDR400, but they failed to mention that it would only support it at 333 MHz.  Good price though.   :-\

Thanks for the help.. but looks like this is going to have to wait a bit.  I'm looking for parts to set up a test box.. just a little thing that I can play with without hosing my main system.  I'll try Vector again once that's built.. and maybe, if folks are willing, I can explore what's going on while still being able to communicate with the world.  I think one almost has to have two machines available when digging beyond one's knowledge level into Linux; one as the test box and one to use for mayday calls.   ;)

Hope to see you again soon, when that test box comes together.

Thanks again,
Bob

Not really. You just need a hard drive large enough for two or three Linux partitions. You can then install an "easy" distro on one and do your testing on other partitions.

You're talking to a noob here, though, who can easily be put out of commission by something as simple as GRUB getting trashed by a new install.   ::)

My very first distro was Suse on an ancient PIII/450. Grub caused me a LOT of headaches, but I stuck with it and was able to get the system running. Found Vector Linux and I haven't looked back since.

My current setup is a dual boot system with XP and SOHO 5.8. It stays in SOHO 99% of the time.

You got any suggestions about how I can make sure my "daily driver" remains bootable while I work on my hot rod?  I don't have a floppy, so writing GRUB to that isn't an option.  I have a hunch that if I could get Vector to see my nic and to get X running, I'd probably never look back either.  But those two are show-stoppers.  I can't even copy/paste logs to show folks here.  Maybe I could get into Vector and mount another drive to use as the scratch pad for doing that, though.

Maybe a question here would help.. I've got a dual-core AMD with 4G of memory, two 74G Raptors, and two 500G Caviars.  Ubuntu, even with the full Gnome setup, boots in about 20 seconds, and OpenOffice, which I rarely use, will come up in about 3 seconds on the first load.  I wonder if Vector would actually give me much more speed with this setup?  I'm sure it would be perfect for an old or low-powered machine, but is it going to make a big difference with this machine?

BTW, saw a funny sig the other day: "Ubuntu, an ancient African word meaning Slackware is too hard to install."  <g>

If you're handy with the guts of a computer, like carefully removing IDE ribbon cables and power connectors, and you don't mind having one side of the computer case off, you could install a second physical hard drive in the box, and change the ribbon and power connector to use another hard drive. Both hard drives should be jumpered to be Master. Just be sure to disconnect the computer's power cord (mains) whenever you swap the hard drives. As a precaution you should wait at least 30 seconds, up to a minute, after removing the computer's power cord (mains) before tampering with internal parts. [Hint: You'll probably need a small flashlight to do this right. Look for an LED power light on the motherboard.] WARNING:You can permanently damage your equipment with this practice.

Did you try the vesa driver?

edit your xorg.conf
then find the line that says
Code: [Select]
Driver "nv" or "nvidia"Change it to say
Code: [Select]
Driver "vesa"
You may get crappy-looking video, but you might be able to go from there

My current machine is fairly new (P4/3GHz). I scrapped Grub in favor of LILO and it works well.

As for your X-Server issue, what resolution are you selecting when installing? Perhaps a lower resolution should be picked first, then modify once everything is up and running.

Thanks for all the thoughts.  I'll try the vesa driver, for a start, and try super-low resolution, and will see if I can mount one of my data drives to copy the log files to.  Maybe that will get us started.

As to the additional drive, I've got my 4 internal drive bays loaded, so it would be a hassle unless perhaps I could just disable one of them in the BIOS when I want to use the other?  Would that work for SATA drives?

Actually, I could probably do most of this off the live CD, no?  Just get far enough to know if it's something that can be made to work, before actually installing to a hard drive?

Anyway, let me boot up that CD again, and see if I can't get a log of the xorg startup, and I guess I'd probably need the kernal log to see why it isn't finding the motherboard nic?

Thanks all!
Bob

Okay, we're making some progress here!

I booted the Live CD, had X fail to start, mounted a data drive, and copied the log to it.  Then I changed the driver to vesa and X came up.  Also, for reasons I can't begin to fathom, it found my network connection this time so I was able to play a bit.  <g>  It looks really nice.  If I can just get Twinview working right on it, I'll be good to go I think.

Here's that log of the X failure... maybe you folks can make something out of it.. I'm not sure what's going on.

Thanks yet again!

Whoops, sorry.. that's what I posted above.  Guess I didn't make that clear.  Or do you mean you'd like to see it after I successfully get X running via changing to the "vesa" driver?

Okay, the Xorg.0.log file *above* is when it had the "nv" driver defined.  After changing that to "vesa" and issuing a startx command, which brought up X successfully, here is the Xorg.0.log that resulted:

I still dont see where xorg throws an error
Can you paste the error you get in the terminal when you start X?

maybe redirect the output to a file and then post the contents of the file ;)

startx > startx.log

startx > startx.log

I think we're having a failure to communicate to some extent here.  <g>

I first posted my Xorg.0.log file from the failure, after which you asked me if I could now post the file.  I thought you meant to post it again after I'd *successfully* started X with the "vesa" driver, since I'd already posted the failure log from the "nv" driver.

If you look back to the post just preceding where you ask me if I can now post the file, you'll see the error log along with the failure in it.

I tried what you said just now, and did startx > startx.log, but the log file ended up empty.  So, I jotted down the messages I saw on the console after it bombed:

Code: [Select]
Fatal Server Error:
Caught signal 8.  Server aborting.

XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

What I think I'd need to do is get the real NVidia driver, but I'm not sure.  Any thoughts appreciated.  And thanks!

There are two legacy GPU drivers. You could try both.

I don't think I need the legacy one, but that's the only one "slapt-get --search nvidia" showed me.  I think I need the current one, which supports the 7300 GT boards.  I notice that Vector is reporting my card as having half the memory on-board that it actually has, and that it correctly found the card at the "5:0.0" PCI bus address, but then bombed when it said something about X server ":0.0" being the problem.

Like I said, I'm a noob, so I'm not quite sure how to read those errors.  I'm also not sure how to even install a video driver, as the other distros I've played with simply offered to go and get it as an option if I wasn't happy with the "nv" driver picked by default.  Running dual-head I believe I need the actual current NVidia driver for this card in order to enable Twinview.  Maybe not, though, as I've heard of people running other forms of dual-head setups.   ???

I think you are right about the drivers, seems like the nv module is not compatible with your card and cant find proper modes. You can download the latest drivers from the nvidia website, pick the linux ones for 32 bits (even if you have a 64bits cpu, vl is a 32bits system). Copy the file to a temp dir of your choice and give it execution rights

Code: [Select]
chmod +x <name_of_the_file>
then you can run it as root with ./<name_of_the_file>
You will need the kernel sources in order to compile this drivers, I hope you installed them from the installer disk. If not you can find the package in some place on the disk or at the repo:

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/kernels/

Make sure you have the exact same version of your kernel. You can know your kernel version executing uname -r on a terminal. Once you have the package, install it as root with
Code: [Select]
installpkg kernel-src-2.6.xxxx-etc-etc.tlz With the kernel sources installed you can run the nvidia installer, is easy from here, just follow the instructions.
Hope this help.

Thanks!  Good info.. I'll work on that.  There is one small hurdle remaining, however.  That's that I've been running from the Live CD and haven't actually installed anything yet.  I'm a bit gun shy about the GRUB / LILO issues, and being able to use my "daily driver" again.  Someone else suggested above that they'd had a bit of a hassle with GRUB initially also.

I can just reinstall my current setup if I have to, and of course all data is on separate drives and multiply backed-up, so it wouldn't be a disaster, just a hassle.  I was hoping I could get far enough with the Live CD to ensure that Vector would work on my system, before taking the plunge and hoping that somehow the GRUB/LILO thing would work out.  I've never had "nv" fail on me before, so I'm not sure.  And the *way* it's failing seems to suggest that there's something about my hardware that's throwing it a curve.

One other concern I have is that Vector seems to only see a small portion of my 4G.  I know most 32-bit distros do this, but I've never been sure why since they should be able to address 4G of memory, no?  Is there any plan for a 64-bit version, or am I locking myself into the 32-bit world if I fall in love with Vector?

I *think* I hear you saying I need to actually install to the hard disk before I can get much further.  Is that right?  And, if so, got any hints to keep my current GRUB safe?

Thanks,
Bob

About lilo, there is no reason to have a problem with it, you can setup it easily from the install cd. I have no much experience with grub, but is because lilo works great for me ;)
About the nv driver, I was googling a while and looks like has problems with your card in xorg 6.9 Did you try it with 7.x?

I cant help you with that, but no, there is no plans to build a 64bits version of VL. This has been a topic for discussion at the community, you are invited to join to it, but looks like VL has not the manpower yet to maintain all the versions for both architectures, and our devs want to focus the effort on the current versions. Anyway, VL should work fine with 4gigs, as all the 32bits systems, 4gigs are right the limit. Looks like another problem to me, but is a problem out of my league  :(

The live-cd is currently a work in progress and is a way to try out the distro without installing it. But vl is designed to be installed in the hd, but all our gurus recommend the install version for a serious use. I think you need the installed version for the propietary drivers, but I am not sure, may be there is a workaround for this. I think there is a cheatcode which will allow you to install soft in a given location, but I dont know if this will work with a driver. One of our devs could give you better advice about this, I think Uel is the expert on this matter.
About grub, I have no experience with it, but you are absolutely safe if you install lilo in a floppy, and you dont touch the current mbr at all. If you pull out the floppy, your grub will be there as usual.

Sorry, I overlooked the current driver, and I see GeForce 7300 GT is on that driver's list of supported video cards.

Consider the risk of borking your system with a dual boot versus the inconvenience of connecting a spare hard drive to your system, without physically installing the spare hard drive in the computer. If you dont have a spare 10 or 20 GB hard drive, now would be a good excuse to get one. Hook up the spare hdd as master, place it on a stack of books beside the computer, or whatever, and test VL on your computer. If it works, you can commit to installing VL on your machine. If it fails, you disconnect the spare hdd, and get your computer back, intact.

If you decide to try the spare hdd, glean some pointers from this post:

f you're handy with the guts of a computer, like carefully removing IDE ribbon cables and power connectors, and you don't mind having one side of the computer case off, you could install a second physical hard drive in the box, and change the ribbon and power connector to use another hard drive.

Ah, thanks for that.. i was thinking that perhaps Vector couldn't support the current driver for some reason.  Not knowing much about this stuff, I thought maybe the kernel was too old or something.

You know, I read that post but I guess the gist of it went over my head the first time around.  Great idea.  Actually, though, see what you think.. would this work as well..?  I have two SATA 74G Raptors, which I set up with the initial idea of running RAID-0, but subsequently changed my mind about.  Once I settle on my distribution, then I'll use them both either as RAID-1 or just put /home on one and everything else on the other.  But the point is, I have a "spare" SATA drive already installed, and having had a bad experience with PCLinuxOS/2007 and SATA drives, I'm inclined to perhaps just unplug the current sda and make the other one sda.  If it all blows up in my face, I just plug back in my current sda.  Should accomplish the same thing, no?  Plus let me test for compatibility with the actual drive I'll be using.

Duh.. thanks for the tip, and thanks to the original suggester of this idea..

One point to keep in mind. New computers like his don't come with IDE drives. They come with SATA drives. So things that used to work in the past have to be modified for present conditions. SATA drives don't use "master" and "slave." Also, new computers generally don't come with floppy drives, so suggestions to boot from LILO on a floppy are also obsolete.

VL, once installed, can be started from the CD quite nicely.

I'm a bit gun shy about the GRUB / LILO issues, and being able to use my "daily driver" again.  Someone else suggested above that they'd had a bit of a hassle with GRUB initially also.

You don't have to install LILO or GRUB right away because you can start the installed system with the VL CD. At the first screen's prompt you type:
linux root /dev/hdb1 ro

Of course, you change /dev/hdb1 so that it points to the partition on which you installed VectorLinux.

So if you want to use your "daily driver," you'd just start it as you do now. If you want to use VL, you'd boot with the installation CD and use the command above. This way of starting VL gives you time to fix up the boot loader to your liking and to ask for some help if you're not sure about something.

I use LILO. I've never been able to get my mind around GRUB, even though I've read many explanations.

32-bit operating systems can't address the full 4 gigs of RAM. The limit is about 3.5 gigs. We just had a little discussion of this on the forum recently and someone explained the mathematics of it. However, VL should see much more than a small portion of your 4 gigs. My main desktop has 3 gigs and VL sees all of it.

As for a 64-bit version, I'm sure that day will come but not in the next version. You can follow the discussion starting here:

Hey, that sounds like an even easier way to go.  I presume that during the install I'll have an option to just not install a boot loader at all, based on what you said.  Then just use the same CD I installed from to boot it with your command line.  That sounds perfect.. I don't even have to open my box each time I want to switch back and forth.  Thank you!

Yes, when you get to the LILO INSTALL part while you're setting up VL, just choose SKIP. I use VL Standard and have never seen the installation CD for 5.8 SOHO, so I don't know if the boot loader part is the same. But whatever it is, just skip it and use the CD to boot after VL is installed. And one other thing: when it tells you to remove the CD and reboot once the basic system is installed, leave it in because you'll be booting from it.

Well, I'll be darned!   ;D

Armed with all the information you folks so generously provided, I installed the Vector Gold VL5.8 to my second boot disk, went and got the NVidia driver I needed, installed it, got Twinview enabled and working, mounted a disk with my .mozilla directoriy and copied it over, and I'm up and running in Vector Linux!

Haven't rebooted yet except the first time for the install, so will make sure everything is still working once I do, and then I think I'm ready to begin the learning curve and figure out how to start customizing things the way I like them.  Then live with it for a while and see how it feels.

You folks are GREAT at helping out newbies!

Thanks,
Bob
