Title: SJVN: Linux set to dominate low-end PC
Post by: nubcnubdo on December 07, 2007, 11:03:38 pm
Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols foresees Linux making significant gains in low-end PC market, business and desktop.

And once all the buzz has died down it'll be business as usual. However since 04 things HAVE been steadily improving in linux desktop. Is it 'there' yet? Possibly, but I honestly can't see it. Its close, and it does what I want while looking spiffy on a machine that's only got a 140 watt power supply.

Edit: I think the keyboard's starting to wear out(cheap piece of junk) or I'm just not hitting the space bar hard enough.

I see the increasing usage of Linux as a kind of gradual process. In other words, there will be no discrete 'Year of Linux'. If and when that comes, we will take it for granted because the change from the year before will have been so small. To hope for such an event is silly.

Granted there's a lotta inertia in the computer industry, and SJVN's assumption that consumers and businesses are rational is, uh, presumptuous, Microsoft still seems to be unconcerned with the mega-tonnage of decent computer equipment it is leaving behind. And the low-end PC industry is probably going to continue and grow. I just can't see myself spending $1000 for two instants improvement in response time (which is more than offset by running Vista). What's more, I don't have $1000 for a new computer. I got $1000 for fixing my car, but not for a computer I don't need. What does Vista do that I can't do on Linux, or Windows 2000?

If it ever happens, you can't say we didn't see it coming.

In the UK the supermarket giant Tesco has started to sell low end Linux machines - something of a first as far as I know...

Typically both machines are out of stock...

Dialogue Box peers into the future — and the present's pretty good too, with Asus's new £200 laptop.

Linux boxes are being sold at the local 'wallmart' since a few years ago. They are, well..., I don't know where this guys buy those Pentium III for distributing. They are very cheap for us. They came with a proprietary Argentinian distro called Rxart. The license cost about us$ 20. The distro is quite good. Not like vector, but good :). I am amazed with the work on hardware support. They have support for winmodems, including the very bad usb adsl modems used here. They just work out of the box with minimal intervention of the user.
I am sure the system would be not of my liking, (based in debian, wizards for everything) but it is pro and very polished. I think is another probe that linux can be user friendly, and also a good business. The company developing all this stuff looks healthy and it is expanding the business in all Southamerica. I think I will buy it to take a deep look.

Thanks for the vid links Blurry.  Rumor has it that Santa Clause might be bringing me a low end laptop a bit after Christmas.  Low end is all I need as I need to be practical and use the PC for the more demanding things.  I'm having trouble accepting only 4 gigs of storage though.  :-\

Over the weekend I had my sister's machine to play with.  Her version of windows was horribly corrupted, and the on board graphics was dead.  So using the graphics card from my dead machine and using the ram from my dead machine I reinstalled Windows XP and dual booted it with the latest RC of Vector.   When I told her this she was mildly interested but her children were very interested.  Apparently amongst goth teenagers in Tenby (small town in West Wales) Linux is very very cool.  All my nieces friends are dual booting at the moment and arguing over the merits of Ubuntu and PCOS - I get the feeling my sister will find that she will not be able to get to her machine for all my nieces friends trying it out :-)  Maybe there is hope out there yet.

Are they hot? That is the essential question. (Popularity of the band Tristania in that scene would also help.)

Very difficult to say.... my tastes may not coincide with yours.... actually I think most of my nieces friends would fit into the sweet category..

Most of my niece's friends would fit into "there oughta be law" category.  :o

(Unfortunately, there is.)

How will Linux win the OS wars? From the bottom up!

Bring on the nieces!

How will Linux win the OS wars?  The nieces will start using it, that's how!  And they're sweet, who can resist that?  If pretty young girls and other cool kids like goths use Linux, it'll take over, except with the older "get off my lawn" set, many of whom don't use computers anyway.

Sorry, kind of in a weird mood today ... did one of you put cannabis in my breakfast flakes?

Seriously:  nubcnubdo, I read that article.  Some very good points.  It looks like the PC platform is going to be around for a while, and if MS keeps putting horrible bloatware like Vista, people could be open to alternatives.  Now that we're starting to get some traction with pre-installed Linux, things could start to go somewhere.

As much as I hate to admit it, Ubuntu seems well positioned as the distro to do this.  I'm not an Ubuntu fan (for some not very objective reasons) but it seems pretty popular and a lot of people seem to like it.  The name has quite a bit of recognition.  I've even met some people who haven't heard of Linux but who have heard of Ubuntu.  Go figure.

I just want to make it abundantly clear that I was joking about the Pink laptop.  :)

The Economist: technology predictions for 2008
Quote
1. Surfing will slow: The internet is not about to grind to a halt, but as more and more users clamber aboard to download music, video clips and games... surfing the web is going to be more like traveling the highways at holiday time. You'll get there, eventually, but the going won't be great.
2. Surfing will detach: Internet will doubtless be as popular among mobile-internet surfers as among their sedentary cousins.
3. Surfing — and everything else computer-related — will open: Rejoice: the embrace of 'openness' by firms that have grown fat on closed, proprietary technology is something we'll see more of in 2008... Since the verdict against SCO, Linux has swiftly become popular in small businesses and the home, largely the doing of Ubuntu 7.10. And because it is free, Linux will become the operating system of choice for low-end PCs. Neither Microsoft nor Apple can compete at the new price points being plumbed by companies looking to cut costs.
