Title: gslapt no update
Post by: emamarro on December 25, 2007, 11:58:12 pm
Hi,I have another question..
Gslapt when trying to update archive connects regularry, I see the progress bar working but it shows "download rate 0 b/s" . The result is that I have not any other package to install :-(
I tried with different sources but I get the same or worse connection error

Here are sources I'm using:
SOURCE=http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/packages/
SOURCE=http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/extra/

Thank you
Ema

Here's a bump.  I have the same problem.  No matter what sources I choose, it seems like it take forever to update the package list (10-15 minutes to update 3 sources).  And then when its done and I run slapt-get --upgrade, and it can't resolve the host.  It is a mystery.

@emamarro and mithion: Open a terminal and enter the following commands:

Code: [Select]
su
(type root account password)
slapt-get --update

Post the output that you get from running slapt-get --update here. Don't worry too much at this point about how long the updates take. Rather, I'm more concerned about whether things are working as they are supposed to work. If slapt-get --update works correctly for you, you'll see output something like this:

Code: [Select]

The ibiblio.org sites are not the primary mirror for VL. I would suggest using the osuosl.org sites, as they are the main repository.

With that said, if you still want to use the ibiblio sites, try changing the URL in /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc as root from distro.ibiblio.org to ftp.ibiblio.org.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I tried with the OSUOSL website and I got similar problems.  Here's the new output.

Code: [Select]

mithion,
what does your /etc/resolv.conf file contain?
Title: Re: gslapt no update
Post by: mithion on January 31, 2008, 12:06:10 am
ok here's my resolv.conf file.

Code: [Select]
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
search gateway.2wire.net
nameserver 192.168.1.254

try adding an open dns server to it
Code: [Select]
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
nameserver  208.67.222.222
search gateway.2wire.net
nameserver 192.168.1.254

Ok, I added an open dns server.  It works perfectly now.  It connects with all the sources and does so in a blink of an eye compared to the 10-15 minutes it took before.  Thank you for the help.  My updates are now back up and running.   ;D

One more thing:  you should enable the patches repository in addition to packages and extra.  Without patches you won't get many upgrades.

I just have one final question on the subject.  I just noticed that when I rebooted my computer, the resolv.conf file got overwritten and the open dns server I had added disappeared.  How do I set it up so the file is saved as is and not overwritten each time I reboot.

change line # of /etc/rc.d/functions-network from
Code: [Select]
      dhcpcd -t $DELAY -h ${NETNAME} -d $DEVICEto
Code: [Select]
     dhcpcd -R -t $DELAY -h ${NETNAME} -d $DEVICE

Awesome, it works beautifully now uelsk8s.  And thanks for the advice caitlyn, I have made sure that the patches repository is active.  Thanks for all the help  ;D .

by adding -R to the dhcpcd command you are telling it not to update the /etc/resolv.conf file
you can find out lots more about the dhcpcd command by running "man dhcpcd" in a terminal
You can also do the same for most linux commands

here is my /etc/resolv.conf file
Code: [Select]
search xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
nameserver 212.72.130.20
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

but after slapt-get --update all I get is
Code: [Select]
root:# slapt-get --update
Retrieving package data [ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.8/packages/]...Failed to download: couldn't resolve host name
Sources failed to download, correct sources and rerun --update

should I remove 'nameserver 208.67.220.220'?

p.s. I'm on corporate LAN with proxy

here is my resolv.config:
Code: [Select]
# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
nameserver  208.67.222.222
search gateway.2wire.net
nameserver 192.168.1.254
you may try this one, but save your current one in case of troubles.

ps.

The difference between your old resolv.config file and the new one is nameserver  208.67.222.222 which already is on my file. So I think your file won't work with my network :(
Beside that nameserver 192.168.1.254 shows that you might be on corporate LAN too and you have "internal" nameserver serving your network. It is useless for my situation.

Will it work if I replace that string after search with IP address for my network's proxy?

I think I'll have to play with it.

Actualy It is not exactly 'my' resolv.config...
I took it from previous page and inserted instead of my old one...
And it works!!! So I think you could try to do the same.
I am connected through 2wire router.

ps.
What is LAN means???
I am sorry for my lack of knowledge...

Local Area Network - simply a network at home, office or wherever :)

I don't get it. It's not your resolv.conf but it still works on your machine?

I just replaced my old resolv.conf by that code.
