Title: Compiz on VL 5.9 Gold
Post by: gondes on December 26, 2007, 09:17:06 pm
Hi,
Anyone has successful compiz installation on VL 5.9 Gold? I've followed M0E's How's to but emerald not working since no window decorator, no window sizing. Compiz runs fine since the cube can be rotated, and windows wooblying...
Thanks...

Thanks uelsk8s for quick reply,
I add it to .bashrc, relogin, but nothing's changed. Or, I put it on the wrong file ?
thx

Edit: This is the message when trying to run emerald :

Hi guys,
After many many many times VL installation, I finally found that the compiz problem is the VL 5.9 Gold itself. I just reinstall VL 5.9 RC2 and compiz running fine, ( well, there's a little error in Pkgfile of emerald-theme, which "name" parameter should be "emerald-theme", not just "emerald".) So, guys, because I'm not an expert in packaging, I hope somebody could fix this on VL 5.9 Gold.

Regards,

Gondes

I'm looking at the Pkgfile, and it seems fine to me... take a loook

Yes you right M0E, Sorry I didn't mention that I just do not update the ports because it takes time while after that if it doesn't work I have to install backward and forward (Final, RC3 and RC2).  :-[
On my other compy (desktop) VL Final even cannot pass the ./configure phase, it says "gtk not found"  ??? (If say so, how xfce could run ?)
I'll try to find what really make differences between the two (RC3 and RC2), and I'll let you know about it.

Thanks

While trying installing git, you can install fusion-icon by downloading fusion-icon from http://gitweb.compiz-fusion.org/?p=users/crdlb/fusion-icon;a=snapshot;h=82ce586187ded167c6e56ecde6dcb3f354909faf;sf=tgz
unpack and put the fusion-icon directory to /usr/ports/VL/fusion-icon, and edit the Pkgfile (Ctrl-M in vpackager) :

Quote
git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/crdlb/$name
cd $name

to

Quote
#git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/crdlb/$name
#cd $name
cd /usr/ports/VL/fusion-icon/fusion-icon

then click 'Build Selected',

PS:
you might click 'Ignore Md5sum'

Cheers ...

This is an ATI driver error. I have found no resolution for it yet.
I hope you do better

I don't have compiz-fusion running at this moment, but by memory...
If you right click the icon in your tray, there is a entry, you can switch from compiz back to xfce and it restores xfce for me.

Uelsk,
thank's for sharing your compiz.tlz, now compiz running fine on my  VL59 final. Can you put them permanently somewhere so other people can use them too... (Still wondering why I cannot compile them myself correctly ....).  :-\

Thanks again,

Does not work for me.
- Which version of ATI drivers are you using ?
- Could you please submit your xorg.conf ? I suspect bad config issue...

I am using the 8.42.3 drivers that come with 5.9 on my x300 mobility
I installed the drivers then installed compiz from slapt-get then when that didnt work i installed the xorg packages.
I also commented out the last line in /etc/profile.d/vasm.sh
here is my xorg.conf I didnt do any manual editing it is what was produced by vxconf

Thanks !  ;D

Indeed it works fine with latest ati drivers, automatic xorg.conf, last line in /etc/profile.d/vasm.sh commented out, and deluxe compiz packages (+ libwnck).

The only problem is that display is a bit slow, particularly scrolling down windows. I'll try vl ati drivers later...
[edit] same thing with compiz-fusion 20080108-i586-1vl59 from repos

and running upgradepkg *tgz in the folder I downloaded to

Uelsk8s

It work...but then the xfce taskbar become grey in color...strange.......

below is the screenshot I take......

I've had quite a couple of weird graphics related trouble on the same type of laptop, especially when using transparency. It happened with wbar and tilda, and with yakuake when not running KDE (the latter 2 only have trouble when transparency is enabled) . I've been told the 'ati' driver isn't all that it should be, there are a lot of bugreports for that chipset on the x.org bugtracker: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=mach64 . This doesn't necessarily mean that the ati driver is in fact the problem, but it's something to take into account. The driver uelsk8s is using is the proprietary one (fglrx). Unfortunately, we don't have to expect ati to ever produce a driver for old cards, so we'll have to do with the (reverse engineered) drivers provided by X.

I have the same problem as in the original post here. NO WINDOW DECORATIONS. I cannot resize windows either but wobbly windows are working. And I can enable 3d windows. I have window decorations checked.

I am running this on a Toshiba laptop with Nvidia GeFORCE FX GO 5200 graphics so it's not an ATI driver problem. I too installed as per the HOW TO but I have the most up to date ports.

I did try running
Code: [Select]
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=0 && fusion-iconand I got this
Code: [Select]
* Detected Session: xfce4
 * Searching for installed applications...
Backend     : ini
Integration : true
Profile     : default
Adding plugin decoration (decoration)
Initializing decoration options...done
 * NVIDIA on Xorg detected, exporting: __GL_YIELD=NOTHING
 * Using the GTK Interface
 * Xfwm4 is already running

I then had to right click on compiz fusion icon and select compiz as my window manager.

But still no window decorations.

It's as though the Window Decorations and Resize Windows plugins are not present. Which of course they are or everyone would be having this problem.

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp &worked for my intel lappy.

and running upgradepkg *tgz in the folder I downloaded to

OK, I stupidly ran installpkg instead of upgradepkg and broke my x-windows. I could not recover using VASM. Fortunately I am still in the testing phase with 5.8 running on another partition so I just reinstalled.

Unfortunately this means I have to rebuild Compiz-Fusion and all of its components. Or do I?

Is the Compiz-Fusion package in the repository complete? I tried it before and it did not install due do to a missing dependency (orbit) which as far as I can tell is actually present.

I don't have time tonight but I will be back in a day or two with some errors for Uelsk8s and results from M-ake's suggestion.

That is a known issue with the orbit package name. It will take some time to fix all the packages which depends on it, I think. Perhaps we should start a thread to report all of them there?
If the package is installed just ignore that dep and be sure you install all of them, it should work since, afaik, the binary code is the same, just the pkg name has a problem.

I installed the new package from the testing repo
compiz-fusion-20080108-i586-2vl59.tlz
It threw no dependancy errors.

After the initial install it worked the same as compiz built with vpackager as per  the wiki how to. Still no window decorations.

run
Code: [Select]
emerald
emerald: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a decoration manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current decoration manager.

Restart. Run
Code: [Select]
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=0 && fusion-icon

 * Starting Compiz

It continues adding all of the plugins.
Code: [Select]

compiz (dbus) - Error: dbus_bus_get error: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
compiz (dbus) - Error: InitObject failed
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'dbus'
It continues initializing options including
Code: [Select]

then I get this

I then tried M-ake's suggestion
Code: [Select]
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp &and get these errors
Code: [Select]
compiz (core) - Warn: SmcOpenConnection failed: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

I updated my Compiz-Fusion after installing the Nvidia driver for my GeForce 6200, and now I can't even get Vector to load the fusion-icon app.  I get the following message, as others have gotten:

I've installed these other xorg packages that have been mentioned on this thread, but that does not fix the problem.  Does anyone have a clue as to what may be wrong?

Thanks for the reply, but I have pygtk, as well as the others.  It appears that I may not have the right VERSION for all those things.  How would I be able to check to see what version Compiz is wanting?  It's still too easy to break a Linux program.  Linux will never have popular success if things like this remain common!

Yes, I had installed Vector Linux's Compiz-Fusion package.  As for PyGTK, I'm not on the computer right now, but I'm pretty sure I recall seeing it noted as 'installed' in SlaptGet.  The NVidia driver I had installed was one I had downloaded directly from NVidia, as I couldn't get Vector to install the proprietary driver.  By the way, my X-server also crashes when I click on the Open GL properties in NVidia's setup program.

Thanks for the help.  I added another VectorLinux repository and was then able to download the pygtk package.  It didn't resolve all of my problems with Compiz-Fusion, however, so I ultimately decided to just re-install VectorLinux (I guess Linux hasn't progressed all that much, eh?)  It's a shame there is no way of finding out what versions Compiz-Fusion was looking for.  Anyway, I finally got it running, and all is well, EXCEPT I can't manage to get Compiz-Fusion to autostart with window decorations.  I've tried putting Fusion Icon in XFCE's autostart, as well as a script launching it, but I never can get it to autostart with window decorations.  It's really frustrating.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  By the way, could someone make a package for the XFCE panel applet that allows one to use GNOME panel applets?  This would be a cool thing to have in our repositories.

DarylO,

What video card are you using?  Window decorations were not showing up for Nvidia cards, but a fix was included in the package.  Glad you got Compiz-fusion working, you're on the right track now.

I'm using an NVidia GeForce 6200 AGP card with 256 MB of RAM.  I have window decorations now, but I don't if I put fusion-icon in my XFCE autostart.  I guess I should put some sort of delay in the autostart?  Does anyone have any ideas?  I did a search for Compiz-Fusion and 'autostart' in these forums, but I couldn't find anything.  So, I suppose no one on this forum cared to have it autostart?  That's really weird.  Mandriva 2008, by the way, does not use the fusion icon, and they have Compiz Fusion autostart, and it works flawlessly.  I never had any problem with window decorations in Mandriva.  What is it that Mandriva does, and could VectorLinux copy that technique?
