Title: At long last a facelift!
Post by: vector on January 03, 2008, 07:04:42 pm
Having had a little extra time now that 5.9 is out the door Omasta and myself performed a little surgery on the main web site. From a aesthetics standpoint I think the old girl looks pretty good. There has been lots of chatter in various parts of the forum that a face lift was needed. There was also discussion that we needed a separate thread for web site related ideas so consider this it. If the moderators would like to move related posts here please do, so we have it all under one banner. So at this point we are open to suggestions but remember I'm not much of a html hacker so things like getting forum posts on to the web site are going to need some instructions and maybe even some code on how to accomplish this. If there are pages that need a rewrite than feel free and post on http://pastebin.ca so I can do the updates easily. Lagagnon also is involved in helping to maintain the site so pastes will be extremely helpful for all concerned. Thats all I have for now go look:  http://www.vectorlinux.com
and lets make it a fun and informative site for all.................. ;D

Cheers,
Vec

Looking better. Downloads page gives me this:
Quote
Warning: main(./mod/downloads/index.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /hsphere/local/home/vector/vectorlinux.com/mod.php on line 15

Warning: main(./mod/downloads/index.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /hsphere/local/home/vector/vectorlinux.com/mod.php on line 15

Warning: main(): Failed opening './mod/downloads/index.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php/PEAR:/usr/local/share/pear') in /hsphere/local/home/vector/vectorlinux.com/mod.php on line 15

EDIT: Also the "Submit" button doesn't seem to belong there. That's an administrative action and shouldn't be there like it's a public link.

EDIT2: "Account" button targets home page

Perhaps the vl pc and the cup needs to have a transparent background

Buttons on the top menu do not lead anywhere.  I'm getting the same error as Dweeberkitty.

Now that you're there, please, update the downloads page.  It shows only 5.8 versions.

I like the new design. It feels better than the previous one for sure.

I think the central column will look better if you add some space between. If you want to do that, edit the style sheet located at http://vectorlinux.com/themes/Pixel-Rave-Blue100/style.css, add

Code: [Select]
padding: 2px;

to the .type3 class, so it will look like this:

Code: [Select]
.type3 {
font-style : normal;
font-variant : normal;
font-weight : normal;
font-size : 12pt;
font-family : "Verdana", "Arial", "Helvetica", "sans-serif";
color : #000000;
padding: 2px;
}

Now that you're there, please, update the downloads page.  It shows only 5.8 versions.

I suggest to add a big download button to the Introduction.

To improve navigation, we can use a different color for a:hover, I like the classical blue for links. If you like the idea, replace the current A:hover line with

Code: [Select]
A:hover              {FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; COLOR: blue; FONT-SIZE: 11px; TEXT-DECORATION: underline;}
This is in the same style sheet: http://vectorlinux.com/themes/Pixel-Rave-Blue100/style.css

I will start to append to the same post, I will make a long monologue if not  ::)

I noticed some table headers are uppercase and some lowercase. This is not convenient. Also some uses the div tag to align to the center. Always use css, you can edit easily all the elements of the same kind at once. In this case, is .sideboxtitle
I suggest all uppercase and left aligned:

Code: [Select]
.sideboxtitle      {
FONT-FAMILY: "Arial", "Helvetica", "sans-serif";
COLOR: #2E70A5;
FONT-SIZE: 10px;
font-weight: bold;
text-transform: uppercase;
text-align: left;
}

But you will have to remove the div tags. Also you can avoid the use of    and use css instead:

Code: [Select]
padding-left: 5px;

It's really a improvement Vec.  I haven't messed with phpWebSite.  But if the system is template based, how about instead of us suggesting and leaving it up to you to make it happen (You sort of said it's not your cup of tea).  How about us creating templates and you sliding them under the hood to see how they look?  Shouldn't be too hard for us web master wannabee's to install local phpWebSite's on Xampp and tweak until we think we have something.

Great improvement!

I suppose the Downloads page should have 5.9 Gold with the same prominence as the previous versions, instead of directing the user to the (non-clickable) osuosl repo.

Thanks for the work

Love the download buttons. That's what most people are looking for. :)

Maybe it's time for me to get my vision checked, I can just barely read the text on the main navigation buttons. The second to last one.. MMS0? MM80? MMBO? .. ah: clicking on it reveals that it must be MMBD. Even that is a little cryptic, unless you know what you are looking for.

I agree.  Those buttons are goooooood!  They really bring us up with the times.  Download first...  ask questions later.  I like it.

Looking good. The text on some of the top buttons changes on hover though, was that intended?

Dont forget our slogan:

...discover the difference

I recall a reference to "difference engine" in the movie I, Robot. That's Isaac Asimov for ya.

This is a big improvement. I'd like to see the screenshot of VL 5.9 Standard Deluxe in place of the sort-of logo on the right. I'd also like to see larger type in the text with more space between the lines.

--GrannyGeek

I'm sure this might come in helpful to you, as I (at most times) can't see very well either. No, I'm not old enough and losing my vision, but try looking through a bowl of running water while reading a newspaper or walking down the street.....

anyways, most good browsers have a Zoom/Increase function for fonts and such. This has come in handy for myself in many web places. In FF it's View/Text Size/Increase, -- in Opera , also in View/Zoom/ pick something...
There's also keyboard shortcuts for these, see browser of question for those.

Hope this was helpful info.

I can agree that the screen shot seems a bit more of a professional appeal than the classic logo.

You can also press Ctrl in conjunction with the mouse wheel, or press the "glasses" icon (right of address bar) to access alternate View menu.

The fonts are better legible now, but I think all but all the headers and tables are too big, the size for <p> fonts are correct now.
Also, I noticed the css code for "Uppercase" the headers affected also the Titles in the main column (i.e. "New Release!! VL64-5.9-beta1" ). I like that text "Capitalized" though  ::)
If you agree, this css code fix it:

Code: [Select]
font span.type7 { text-transform: capitalize; }
Do you think a section for announcing new packages as the Arch one is a good idea? If yes, we should remove something, I vote for the "Links" section.

It is looking really good, congratulations for another good job :)

The little screenshot image is not a link...
It should be and it should lead to more screenies.

What ever happened with _someones_ idea (rbistolfi, maybe) of creating a php script for easy package searches via the website (web-interface)?  The test script that was posted was nifty and I think it would be an added feature for the website.  I'll see if I can find it.....

edit:
ahhh, yes...

it was rbistolfi.
Here's the original post: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3479.msg29113#msg29113

If the search tool is wanted I can update it and set it up to fit the new site style, just let me know. I have to add some features as search in a given vl version.
Also, I made some very minor modifications to the smf's SSI.php file to show the latest topics of a given board. We can set it to show the New Packages board.

Here is the code:

vl_SSI.php
Code: [Select]

You have to include it in the site theme template adding this code somewhere near of the top:

Code: [Select]
<?php include("path/to/smf/root/vl_SSI.php"?>
Then, in the place where you want to show the latest packages news, you have to put:

Code: [Select]
<?php
$limit
10//this is the numbers of new topics to show
$board_id 5//board_id of the new packages board (it is in the url, you can check the sql database too
ssi_newPackages($limitnull"echo",$board_id);
?>

I tweaked the original code to show just the subject, the original showed poster, etc.
If you want to apply special style to this section, I added a span tag to easy adding of css styles, for example, you can add to the current css:

Code: [Select]
span.vl_new_pkgs a { text-transform: capitalize; }
span.vl_new_pkgs a:hover { text-transform: uppercase; }

or whatever, and it will have effect just in the new packages sections.

One note, I dont have access to the vl forum root dir, so there is no way I can test it, so if you are interested in this, you will have to setup a test page before, so we will be not showing a buggy page to our visitors. Let me know if you need modifications or something.

in Opera , also in View/Zoom/ pick something...
You can also press Ctrl in conjunction with the mouse wheel, or press the "glasses" icon (right of address bar) to access alternate View menu.

And you can press 10 to increase the entire page in 10% increments, press 9 to reduce the entire page in 10% increments, and press 6 to return to 100% zoom.

I do know how to zoom in every browser by menu, keyboard, and mouse. One of my chief irritants on the Web is type that is too small and looks crowded (as in not enough space between lines). I don't know how adjustable line spacing is through HTML. I believe that through Cascading Style Sheets the size of the type can be autoadjusted to be larger when the page is being viewed at a higher resolution. I have adjusted the default type sizes in my browsers, but of course the page coding can override that.

Remember that type that looks good to a young person will most likely look too small to those of us getting up there in years, not to mention people of all ages with less-than-perfect vision.

I'm happy to see the screenshot again, but it's too small. I'd like to see it about one-third larger with a link to a larger image, and I agree with M0E-lnx that there should be links to more screenshots.

With links below the logo and title at the top of the page, the links below MAIN MENU seem superfluous. I really like the Arch updates section, also new packages, and hope we can get something like that on our home page.

It's getting there!

Well, I was just trying to be helpful.  ::)

Ty Masta, that was useful :)

I think the better way of organizing the Introduction section is the text on top, and next the screenshot left aligned, and the buttons at the right, one on top of another.

I feel the screenshot png's should be optimized.  The file sizes are enormous!  They take a long time to load with my cable connection, I can't imagine what dial up people must go through. I personally like the quality of png's over jpg's, but more often then not you can get a acceptable jpg image with a much smaller file size over a optimized png. So that may be a option as well.

But overall, the main page is looking better every time I look at it.  Nice job  :)

Absolutely, I agree.  I remember looking through them the other day and noticed that often times that largest resolution images were the smallest filesize - by almost 5x times!

I wanted to give a spin to the download buttons, this is the first one:

Terrible I say --- BLUGH!!!  Just kidding ;D

I REALLY like it, but I think the text size and position take up too much screen space.  Maybe smaller font size; maybe split to two line; maybe centered under arrow.

hehe, obviously needs to be scaled down. The disposition of the elements bothers me as well, I needed some input, thanks.

I dig it!!  Great work!

Next you should make a stylistically-matching button for the 'purchase deluxe version' and vec will have to think about putting them up in place of the current ones ;)

Thanks Newtor, I thought about the same button but somehow glassy or golden for Deluxe. I will give it a try tomorrow.
Thanks for the input.

Well, I was just trying to be helpful.  ::)

Sorry I came across as ungrateful. It's better to jump in with something that may be obvious (but unknown to some) than to say nothing, assuming they already know it.

Interesting take. I like the arrow and the text, but the CD doesn't blend with it very well, maybe the color or sharpness of it, or something, I can't quite put my finger on why it doesn't seem to blend  :-\
I was thinking while looking at it, and wonder what it would be looking like, if the text were on the arrow, and maybe the CD in the background of it.. just an idea in which I hope helps get your artistic flow -- flowing  :)

No big deal, it's almost impossible to write something and know how someone else will read into it and take to it, as compared to how it was actually meant  ;) . I tried to think of that when I was typing it, so it didn't seem as if I was talking "down" to anyone (which I wouldn't normally do unless it was some jerk that really had it coming   :D ) and with that said, I apologize if it appeared in such way.
 It's all good  :)

I agree Masta, I think is the cd perspective, ty. I was just looking to the Tango icon set and I see one much better. I will give it a try.

I made some additions:

(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9149/g10243yn6.png)

I asked to Vanesa, "on which one would you click?" And she pointed "Free Download" with no doubt. I should add she doesn't speak English at all and "Free" or "Purchase" means nothing to her :(

That certainly looks nice comparing to the first idea(s), but I think the stars should go and maybe replaced with something else. The other thing is the red ribbon.. I look at red as sort of a warning light --red stop light, red stop sign, code red :) , Maybe a blue or green one might seem more fitting?

Keep it flowing though, much improvement since the start  8)

I believe it's better to stay away from reds and green as much as possible because there are those who are red/green color blind.  not many but some.
just a thought.

Actually, complete colour blindness and blue-yellow colour vision deficiency are indeed rare (1 in 30000 and 1 in 10000 respectively), but red-green colour vision deficiency is much more common, as in 7 to 10% of males, though much lower in females.

Perhaps the vl pc and the cup needs to have a transparent background
