Title: VL64-5.9-beta2 is Released
Post by: uelsk8s on March 25, 2008, 10:52:20 am
The VectorLinux team is pleased to announce the second public beta release of VL64-5.9
This is our latest 5.9 release optimized for 64 bit processors. The developers were a bit leery as older hardware is our niche but a strong contingent of our community felt that a 64 bit version was in order so that all could realize the beauty that is VectorLinux. To that end we proudly announce VL64 to our product lineup. This is a true 64bit linux OS, that is based on BlueWhite64.  The build has excellent 32bit compatability with flash working out of the box. We have done our best to duplicate the look and features of the 32bit version. We have included the latest xfce-4.4.2 fluxbox and jwm Window Managers. Seamonkey, firefox, and opera browsers. Basically all has been recompiled from scratch to make 64 bit machines scream. We need to warn that this may be to fast for the average user so don't blame us if your PC goes up in flames. You have been warned! Those willing to expose their boxes to extreme heat can get the iso here: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/VL64-5.9/iso-release/VL64-5.9-STD-B2.iso

Survivors can post bug reports here: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5926.0

Thanks,
The VL Team

Oooh, a pleasant surprise - this was less than the 2-3 weeks quoted.  Either way, grabbed and will be testing shortly.  Most likely after my lecture this evening.

Time for another release, yet?

In a few weeks I should have a 64-bit computer. If not i'll attempt to bring it on my laptop (I suspect its a 64-bit laptop). Will give it a try then ;)

Is your laptop a recent Intel?  (ie, Core 2 Duo?)  'cause if so, yes, you're running a 64-bit processor.

32-bit is dead, its corpse is just still breathing, etc, etc.

It's a centrino. Generation before the cores. (These M processors i believe).

I just went and checked to see that that bloody Celeron 530 in my craptop is indeed a 64-bitter.
So, downloading a-go!

If it's an M-series Centrino, it'll still be 32-bit, sorry to say.

Doesn't matter. I just ordered a new computer. Problem solved ;)

I hate to sound impatient, though I am curious - are people still working on VL64?  It's been pretty quiet here for a while.

It hasn't been abandoned, if that helps any.  Computer time for some of the developers is a bit low, things like work picking up and so on.

Am I correct in assuming at this point we are looking at VL64-6.0 rather than 5.9?  I hope so....

Just out of curiousity, what are the major differences between a 32-bit distro and the corresponding 64-bit?  I understand a different kernel is required to take advantage of the different CPU instructions, but for the rest of the 32-bit programs, surely it's just a matter of compiling from source in a 64-bit environment, yes?

The kernel and apps have to be compiled for the 64bit system in a 64bit system.
All that VL64 requires to "Take Off" is some more volunteers with 64bit hardware to grab source and buildscripts from the 32bit repo and compile them on their 64bit system.

Check with the developers and make sure they are still going ahead with VL64 5.9.  I expect the project is or will be abandoned in favor of VL64 6.0.

will do but for now i'm in a good fight with the brand new laptop to install. The kernel doesn't support most of my hardware, can't even use the ethernetport

This was a no go. I got a new kernel supporting more hardware including the NIC. I fixed the sound using the latest alsa rc drivers, yet this was full of bugs and weirdness.
ATI drivers not installable, not even from their website. Kde would not compile, the older gcc caused troubles with linking pciutils. Wireless was not found.

list hardware please? Be as detailed on the list as possible, this way it is noted for the 6.0 build.

P.S.
As far as I know packaging has not been abandoned for the 5.9 build of the 64bit.

Dell studio 1537

Intel Core duo 2 P8400
memory normal ddr2
hd 320gb (all standard things)
Ati Mobility radeon HD 3450 (this will always be sort of a problem ... )
Uses a ICH9 for Sata controlling although only one harddisc present
Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet (hard to find out which nic it is, guess just chipset controlled?)
Intel Wifi Link 5300 (was introduced in the latest kernel I believe)
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Series PCI Express Root Port - 2A41            (this is the IntelĀ®  Cantiga GM45-chipset)

If this project is still alive, I will compile some programs.  What programs are not done yet, and I assume I will also want a 64 bit compiler/assembler, or should I install something like slamd64 and compile from there?

VL-64 5.9 was abandoned.   However there is VL-64 6.0, currently at alpha 0.9, which is alive and well  ;D

You can certainly run 32-bit Vector on a 64-bit computer. I have VL6 Deluxe installed on two 64-bit computers.

Of course, I'm sure those working on VL6-64 will be delighted to have another beta tester.  :)

Hey Granny!

How's VL running on the Turion? I have the same processor.

I haven't had any problems. VL6 is running great on all my computers, including the aging Celeron. If I do any beta testing for 64-bit VL, it'll be on my Athlon 64 X2.

Nice to have you back!

Hello all.  Do we have a place to retrieve a 6.0 64-bit ISO?  The above URL does not work for me.  I have a decent machine here and would love to test VL:

Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Hard Drive: 500 GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Motherboard: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO

I finally had occasion to install 7.0-64 on a powerful machine.  It's REALLY slick and chock full of awesomeness.  Now I just need to get my favorite pieces of software installed.  It looks like this will be mostly compiling from source, which can be tedious.  I hope others will grab that ISO.  Great job, VL team!
