Title: VectorLinux-5.9-SOHO-DELUXE has been released!
Post by: vector on June 13, 2008, 01:52:00 am
We have released SOHO-5.9-DELUXE!  It has  been a year since our last SOHO release and from all reports this is our best yet. Starting from the ground up with our 5.9 standard release we have taken VectorLinux to a new high. This is absolutely the fastest KDE 3.5.9 desktop you will find anywhere with a optional fluxbox desktop for power users. The eye candy  is amazing  with four special themes to select from at installation time to a launch bar you have to try to believe. We have fixed most all the oddities and bugs found in the standard release and have made many improvements with our in house utilities. Everything is security updated and patched so no need to worry about homeland security. The amount of software available on this two disc set will simply amaze. We have games galore, more office like koffice and inkscape, server tools like apache. mysql and php. Plus the classics like emacs and all the rest. Guess what to make this even more exciting we reduced the price (we want you all to be happy!)
please go  to our new website for all the details and purchase information: click here for more (http://vector2.ecosq.com/products/vector-linux-5.9-soho-deluxe-edition)

That is in the works. I mentioned in another part of the forum that some things are in need of catching up to the release, and downloads are one of them. However, I suspect that will be available soon, so if you haven't been contacted as of yet, you should be as soon as the servers are populated, and ready (AFAIKO) .

Thanks for patiently understanding :)

Iwould like to purchase 5.9 SOHO. I would not wish to download iso because I was a victim of identy theft and paypal was the source. I filled out the order form to send check but it is for standard deluxe. How do I order SOHO?

Those that have purchased the download version, should receive a link. Those that ordered a Mail In physical copy, should have received an emailed copy of the receipt. That is all I know on that end.

Hello,
Is it possible to update SOHO 5.9 preview to the deluxe edition through updates?

Is SOHO the only release with  KDE ?

Thank you,
Carlton

I ordered my SOHO this morning. Very happy to support the efforts behind this wonderful distro. Thanks to all who make it possible - can't wait to get my own SOHO!

----

I believe PREVIEW was uninstallable. SOHO features KDE, but you can add KDE to Standard (XFCE-based) by installing via Gslapt. I'm fairly certain the SOHO KDE is more "tweaked to perfection" in comparison to adding via Gslapt (but I may be wrong).

Cheers,

LLL

Yes, the SOHO is a near perfected KDE desktop. I have tried just adding kde via Gslapt and it makes an ugly mess that is not very stable, does not work well, and is not pretty. SOHO is better than STD in my opinion because it uses the well tested STD base and fixes known bugs and as you said, tweaks it to perfection. This is really the best KDE desktop in existence I think. You will not find a faster, more user friendly, perfect desktop than 5.9 SOHO Deluxe. Congratulations to all of the developers!

No it's not possible to update the preview through updates. Just doesn't work that way.

Yes, SOHO is the only release WITH KDE,....

but it's not the only release that KDE can be installed into. By that I mean it comes with a Very Nice KDE installed, but say if you have Standard, you can install KDE into that, but it's not quite the same as the KDE in the SOHO.

I'm just curious if it uses 2.6.25 or 2.6.24?

Ok, I just checked the SOHO preview thread and it seems that SOHO 5.9 is using the 2.6.22.19 kernel. :-\
I'm currently using 2.6.25 in my current distro, so maybe I'll just try the standard 5.9 version and see how the older kernel works on my t60 laptop.

Am I limited to how many machines I install a Deluxe release to? Not trying to be a cheapskate here; I've donated $50USD in the past just because I've used 5.x.1SOHO since release and am still using 5.1.1SOHO on my older, "primary" PC. Just simply checking. :)

No soho for me this time, I see no way of paying from Holland without a creditcard. I have used it for 6 years now. For older machines I'll use VL-Light, and maybe Standard with KDE on this laptop, were Ubuntu is running right now,but that doesn't feel like home.

Vector, I sent an email to the address you specified with a proof of purchase receipt for the mail bundle.  A reply was sent back with a download link to the first disk.  Thanks for the quick reply.  I was able to login to the ftp site for the download, but the download has an estimated download time of anywhere between 8 and 15 hours.  Also, the download timed out at least once.  Any thoughts?

Seems it could be a possible bad link between your system and the server. But it could also be due to high traffic. These sort of things are a bit tough to pin down, sometimes.

I would recommend using a download application that supports resume. This way if you should get another time out, the application will try again, and pick up where it left off (the good ones do anyways).

The only way I could even get access to the files on the ftp site was through Windows Explorer, not IE7.  I even tried using Filezilla.  IE7 just kept asking for the username and password even though I repeatedly entered in the correct one.  Filezilla just gave me a similar incorrect password error.  I know the login info is right because it works in Windows Explorer, but I don't know of any ftp download programs that can resume downloads from Windows Explorer.  Guess I just need to be patient and wait for the mailman.  Well, thanks for the help anyway.

Just thought to try my Kubuntu pc.  Perhaps a linux os will have better luck downloading than Windows.

I heartily recommend using wget at the command line.  That way i you do get a timeout it will resume as many times as necessary.

I also recommend wget. In Windows, the Opera browser will resume downloads if the server from which you're downloading permits this. Firefox 3 is also supposed to do this. I don't know about Firefox 2.x, as I've never tried downloading a large file with it.

Ok, I bought the 5.9 SOHO release and installed it on my Dell 400 XPS desktop. I'm used to Zenwalk (another Slackware based distro) so it shouldn't take too long to become familar with the VL way of doing things.
I just need to install the nVidia drivers on my system and I should be on my way. The MacOS theme looks very nice.

During setup you can install Nvidia drivers. Seems that you're already onto a desktop, where you can download the latest drivers from Nvidia and install.

You can also install the included drivers, by dropping down into run level 3 (init 3), when you're done there, you can return to run level 4 (init 4).

either way should be a breeze :)

Yeah, I downloaded and installed nvidia's drivers and installed them. I'm currently having an issue with audio now. I fixed it once by selecting my Audigy card from within the alsamixer menu, but it forgot that setting after I rebooted my PC and now audio is just dead even after I select it from the alsamixer gui screen.
Is there an alsaconfig type program within VL?? The Alsa setup from the VL control panel doesn't even launch.

Thanks for the advice earlier.  I forgot that I had rewritten the mbr to Windows 2000 default.  To access Kubuntu I would have had to use a boot disk.  Luckily, I was able to use a pc at work.  It was using Free Download Manager.  It worked like a charm in getting the isos.  I'll try to remember wget after I finish installing Vector.  Might come in handy.

Thank you for all of the work that went into 5.9 SOHO!
I installed it last Monday and so far there was only one problem, but that was easy to fix. VL-hot did not work, but HAL does. Neither worked with VL 5.9 Standard Deluxe, though.

I have had problems in the past with other distros too, and I
believe it's a motherboard issue. It's a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9.

This is just a quick rave. I can hardly count the ways that I dig this release, but let me count a few: 1) It looks awesome. I can't even really figure out what's different, but everything just looks darn good. 2) K3B works. Don't ask me why, but on my desktop, k3b has always choked in the past. Not now. 3) The packaging guys are working wonders for me. For the first time, my scanner is supported under linux (thanks to a sane-backends update package). They also packed up partimage for me, so now I can backup my expensive partition. 4) It's faaast. 5) It hasn't hiccuped even once. There's a lot more I could say in praise, but for now these few comments will have to do. I've been distro-hopping for nearly a year, but I keep coming back around to Vector whenever possible. Thank you.

Installation faultless.
Disappointed to find that Gslapt has the "Mark All Updates" has been "Disabled by VL".  When will this be corrected?
Also the Gnome-Games package has been omitted.  Can this be re-instated, please?

Disappointed to find that Gslapt has the "Mark All Updates" has been "Disabled by VL".  When will this be corrected?

VL has a slightly different philosophy out there regarding updates than does Ubuntu and Windows. If you scan any computer forum around the world you will notice many of the posts are problems as the result of updating. Updates are good things when you REALLY need the new functionality provided by a major package upgrade or when there is a SERIOUS security hole. Most upgrades are neither. We suggest trying to get out of the continuous updating mode and only do so when you really need some new functionality or when a serious security hole is announced. Hence the disabled button.

The way I do things is to avoid updates unless necessary, and then every year or so I install the latest stable VL version, while keeping a seperate /home partition so I don't loose any data or settings. I have done this to a number of machines over 6 years or so and have never had any breakages due to updating....YMMV...

The SOHO 5.9 CDs came in the mail today. Thank you very much. I'm impressed, the desktop is excellent. It took just 30 trouble-free minutes to install disk 1 on my 1.8 MHz Celeron, Acer laptop. Even sound works straight off!

Since installing the Multimedia CD I can't keep the kids off it, so I am back to the the 5.9 standard machine (surprisingly I'm going to miss Xfce but I'm not up to another install tonight).

I had a few problems with disk 2 (maybe due to my low tech skills)

1. Firstly I tried following the instructions printed on the CD about Autobooting. No joy there. I think you should change these instructions.

2. Install.sh didn't work. I had to :

Code: [Select]
su
cd/mnt/cdrom/MMBD_Data
vsuper sh install.sh

3. I have room, so installed everything but got a few error messages Everything seems to work but I thought I'd let you know anyway. This is from my scribbles, so syntax may be not quite right - the machine is somewhere in Wesnoth at present.

Code: [Select]
regex failed on [PACKAGE NAME: X11docs.tlz
and
Code: [Select]
: command not found
'h: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token '{
'h: line 3: config () {

and multiple times
Code: [Select]
sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libboost_thread-mt.so is not symbolic link
and
Code: [Select]
cp: cannot stat "/root/slapt-getrc.backup' No such file or directory and the results of this problem.

It doesn't seem to be causing any issues, the 13 year-old son and his friends (school holidays) are quite happily  playing with the games and drum machine. So you get a vote of approval there.

Thank you to all involved for the great distro, first impressions are very good.

Hi lagagnon.

Hello Shargols,
I'm short on know-how but I picked this up a few years ago and like Lagagnon says, never had breakages when 'updating'.

During installation I set up partitions like this on my 40Gb HD:

hda1   1Gb         swap
hda2   15Gb       /         bootable
hda3   24Gb      /home

The partitioning program only sets the size and type so further on in the install you get to choose your partitions and there is a screen asking if you want to choose more partitions. I always choose to make hda3 into /home.

When I upgraded from 5.9 Std to SOHO on this machine a few days ago, I set hda3 to /home as usual but chose NOT to format it. I also kept the same details for my user when I set that up.

When I logged in to the SOHO install for the first time, a screen pops up asking if I want to upgrade settings for a whole list of programs.  I choose to do this. but otherwise it is the same partition, content-wise, as previously.

Just in case I backup before the install.

Hope that helps

Looks like I got a "bad burn" case; When in TUI, VASM is all garbled.
On top of that: the ath5k module(needed for the wireless card in my laptop) is b0rked:
Code: [Select]
FATAL: Error inserting ath5k (/lib/modules/2.6.22.19/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath5k.ko): invalid module format.
Even tried re-installing Madwifi; no dice

Even ndiswrapper din't help me out here: This VL-version simply refuses to recognise my Atheros card.
Yes: I tried abut everything in the Wireless-howto, posted on this board.
Even tried a re-install; Same qualms.

Too bad, for it does look good overall...

That means: back to 5.9 std with this laptop, since that one worked.

Question, so the VL5.9 SOHO is not free? Believe it or not I'm still running VL5 SOHO on my old sony vaio laptop with 256mb of memory. So, if VL5.9 SOHO is not for free what would be my next option to upgrade VL5 SOHO? Any information would be appreciated.

Sorry warpman, 5.9 SOHO is only available from the CD Store for a very reasonable sum http://vectorlinux.com/products/vector-linux-5.9-soho-deluxe-edition

As a long-time SOHO user, I found it pretty awesome and worth the price. And the VL team certainly deserve our support.

If you don't want to spend, 5.9 Std is as good as 5.1 SOHO, just Gslapt OpenOffice and whatever else you need. I really enjoy using the new Xfce desktop and on this, my work machine, have just left 5.9 Std on, even though I have the SOHO version.

I'm afraid I'll have to conclude, the 5.9SOHO-discs I got are a typical case of a "bad burn"..
See: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=7008.0 and my previous post higher on in this thread.

SUSE Refugee:  ath5k modules only exist in kernel 2.6.25 and higher.  It's not in SOHO or Standard.  The older madwifi driver included with the kernel in VL SOHO should work for most any Atheros chipset.  My card is based on an Atheros 5212 chipset and it works just fine.

A bad burn or bad download is another issue, of course...

I got the CDs the other day and installed it. It seems I ordered the wrong set, I did not want SOHO.

Glad to see that in xterm 'Alt some letter' again gives special characters a feature unfortunately absent in the light version.

There is a typo in ./.fluxbox/menu. vasm is set to start from /usr/bin when in fact it is in /sbin. That causes an error: program not found.

:$ whereis vasm
vasm: /bin/vasm /sbin/vasm
