Install was pretty good (using the GUI installer). It needs to support using an existing user (which crashes the install at tht moment), but otherwise it looks good.

First mite on running - using VasmCC, any attempt to select the Hardware menu results in nothing being shown in the right hand pane, 100% CPU load, and a locked VasmCC. Has to be killed.

Mousepad is opening in some high resolution mode - /etc/skel/.config/mousepad/mousepadrc needs to be cleared, since the Mousepad window is too big to fit on a 1024x768 screen and can't be reduced other than by clearing the default rc.

More later...

Installer:
- clicking the little arrow on the left (to hide the sidebar) does indeed hide the sidebar, but doesn't seem to be able to bring the sidebar back up again.
- the vectorlogo in the credits list has jagged edges
- lilo > installing lilo to a floppy isn't possible anymore?
- lilo > In the dropdown menu to select where to install Lilo, I'd prefer the 'Sector' entry to read 'Bootsector of /dev/sdaX' or something similar (but that's probably just a matter of preference)
- nvidia installer gives errors (card is not supported by latest driver apparently), complains about the kernel and aborts. It would be nice if after a failed nvidia attempt the list of choices for drivers would come back instead of it picking a default.

Will test the installation itself later today

Here is a status update on the installer for those of you testing. As or revision 329
Quote
- Fixed typo in gparted module
- Fixed issue with user icon now showing up after first user account.
- ** NEW FEATURE ** Added auto-modifying of -cli lilo entry if the chosen label is too long. Added warning to user interface to warn accordingly
- Relabeled "Sector" to "Bootsector of" in LIlo setup
- Fine tuned lilo target options in the search for a floppy drive
- Fixed problem with read-only textbox in wireless network setup
- Fixed problem with status of root password being left behind as current
- Fixed problem with filesystem being reported wrong for ntfs partitions
- ** NEW FEATURE ** Added column to partition selection summary to include "Format Yes/No" value

This is just so people dont double-book bug reports.
Thanks for the bug reports... Please continue testing, you will see these changes reflected on the next beta ISO

-\EDIT/-

I think the bug with the left panel not coming back up once it's hidden is due to a bug in the gambas gtk component.
As a temporary work around, if you wish to restore the panel, click on the little arrow (handles) on the left panel and leave them so that they point in this direction "<"
Then, drag your mouse pointer along the left edge of the screen ( you should see your mouse turn into ->) then click-and-drag to the desired size.
hiding/restoring the left panel works fine after that

Tried hosted install and install from cd on a Toshiba A215

1. Both hang a looooooooooong time installing my intel sound card

2. Both lock up tight as a jug on the user password screen. Have to cold boot. It will boot but had to use passwd command to set the user pw.

3. Pkgtool doesn't work.

OK installed in shortly under 10 minutes, and a few more to do the post install configuration.

Previously I could only connect if I logged on on tui mode and then launched xwindows.  I see I can launch the application in XFCE on its panel to connect to network, previously this was automatic.
Generally it looks quite slick thought I think the panel being in two tone gray makes the clock difficult to read.

So first impressions very slick, though I am not sure why you have a two part install and configuration I am sure this will cause some confusion.

Fonts look good, artwork is a matter of taste, ie not quite mine.

A few things missing, no xscreensaver, xkill only via a terminal, no htop.

Also sound not automatically configured, have to do that manually post install.

This suggests a whole section of hardware detection isn't working on install.

Glapt doesn't update package lists, just freezes, works fine from command line

I think this beta despite what I have put above is fairly close to being right.

I've install it on a Lenovo and two Toshibas. Things that are common between all three.

Sound appears to configure but I can't get a mixer to open. Alasamixer or the one in the menu.

Abiword and Gnumeric won't due to missing gnome files

pkgtool doesn't work

liloconfig doesn't work

You really should do something about setting the desktop session when xfce isn't installed. That strange message about being logged in for only 10 seconds drove me crazy.

Can't connect to Internet.
FATAL: Module not found

Does not find my sound card.

Can't print. No device for USB printer  connection.

Installation does not ask for Internet connection. Had to go to netconfig.
Which after all entries did not make a connection.

I tried install as a dual boot with windows xp home.
The partitions where set up as ...
hda3 primary linux swap 542.87mb
hda1  Boot Primary NTFS 10569.49
hda2  primary Linux ReiserFS  8891.53

The partitions where already there from my install of Alpha .037. (Used gparted from gui but completed using text installer)
This was working fine.

So heres the rundown.
First thing I noticed was it seemed to take longer to find installable media. But it did and I continued on.
Choose to use existing partitions and picked root for hda2 and of course swap for hda3
Also choose 'Detect and Setup Windows partitions for auto-mounting at boot.

Windows was detected and I left it to mount at /mnt/hda1 (I was really happy to see windows detected.)

Choose the Full install. All went well.

Boot Manager Config screen showed both Vector-hda2 and Windows-hda1. I left all settings at default and hit next.
This generated an error. (see picture attached.)
I clicked ok to clear the error message, it allowed me to continue with the install.
Created a user. (The box for User Accounts has been cleaned up nicely)

When left clicking on the next button I noticed it darkens to indicate it has been activated, but when tapping the touch pad on the next button it doesn't darken.  This may cause some to tap to often.

Restarted to finish the install but the boot loader fails.

I had to use the disk to boot the installed system

Got a screen that said Vector Linux was installed and proceeded to set up gui configuration.
New user screen looks good.  Lots of languages, very nice.
Also once signed in I noticed Vector had set up to the full resolution potential of my laptop 1400*1050

Used vliloconf to set up the boot loader and once again got an error.

Lilo detected operating systems are.
Win: Windows (/dev/hda1)
Linux: Linux (/dev/hda2)
Linux-tui: Linux Text mode (/dev/hda2)
Linux-gui: Linux Graphic mode (/dev/hda2)
hda2: Linux hda2 (/dev/hda2)

The only way I was able to complete the vliloconf set up was if I deselected windows.

Product test VL6.0 Beta 1

Under Settings.
-Appearance Settings does not change the appearance of anything. Not sure what the difference is between it and User Interface Preferences.
-Database access properties does not launch. (Missing libgtksourceview-1.0.so.)

Under Multimedia
hdspconf does not launch.  Missing libfltk.so.1.
Same with hdspmixer.

Under System
GSlapt does not launch (does not launch from appfinder either)
Xfce-taskmanager is in the menu twice. Once as xfce-taskmanager and once just as taskmanager.

Installed on VmWare Fusion as guest OS --running Leopard on Imac.

Had to use cfdisk to partition. After that I was able to install using the GUI without a hitch. Like it a lot (that is from the perspective of an off the street user with a very modest understanding of Linux). Out of box I was able to stream video from sites that I was completely unable to stream in other distros ( even in Mac OS Leopard).

Absolutely love the look and feel of version 6 but two critical issues:

1. Lose internet after rebooting. ifconfig after booting looks like this:

root:# ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:1b:2f:34:41:43
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:7 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:1742 (1.7 KiB)  TX bytes:1240 (1.2 KiB)
          Interrupt:16 Base address:0xac00

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

I'm no expert, but I think that's ok. But I have to run dhcpcd eth0 in order to get the net working.

Second issue, no sound. I have a new sound blaster audigy that I've found works only on about half of the eight distros I have installed. I have set the device to the sound blaster, ca0106, set the primary channel and played with all the settings I can find in volume control, but no luck.

try running alsaconf as root in a terminal, and then reboot

Did a hosted install last night.  The text based installer has a few improvements/tweaks and still functions well.  I'm surprised there is still no support for jfs partitions.

The installer correctly detected my Atheros chipset card and seemed to configure it.  vasm/vwifi saw it as wlan0 and allegedly configured it but in fact it remained non-functional.  I believe the ath5k module just plain doesn't work with the Atheros 5212 chipset regardless of distro, at least with a 2.6.26.x or 2.6.25.x kernel.  It would be nice to have a legacy madwifi package offered as an option which blacklists ath5k as part of the install script.

I've had several hangs with gdm.  The first time I booted I selected my session and language.  I wanted to look at the Actions menu and that hung gdm.  Ctrl-Alt-Bksp didn't work.  Nothing short of a reboot would get me out of it.  The next time I booted I looked at the Actions menu and then tried to set my session.  Another lockup.  The third book I set my session and logged in fine.  The fourth boot I changed my language/locale and logged in fine.  It seems that locks only happen when using both the Session and Actions menus, something you normally wouldn't do.

With language/locale set to French/France the menus are, as expected, in French.  However, with firefox-langpack-fr installed Firefox still comes up in English.  Not good.

HAL doesn't work for me.  Inserting a data DVD or plugging in a USB pen drive doesn't pop up a desktop icon, at least in Xfce.  I did a df and nothing was automatically mounted, either.  Using mount at the command line does work.

VasmCC worked for me, including the hardware tab.  I can confirm that gslapt won't launch from the menu.  It does launch from the command line.

Printing:  cups is installed by default but gutenprint, ghostscript, jplip, and foomatic-filters are not.  This will render cups useless for a large number of printers if not most.

In general 6.0 beta with Xfce isn't as fast as 5.9 with Xfce.

In installed 21 missing font packages from X.org.  It took a total of 18MB of space and did not adversely affect performance on my rather ancient system.  I don't see the logic in excluding these.  Some older apps depend on these fonts.

vxconf still doesn't work with my Toshiba Satellite 1805-S204 laptop.  xorg.conf-fbdev does work.

It's a beta but it still need a lot of work.

Did that but still no joy. The network connection still doesn't stick between boots but I've found that I can click on the network icon in the bottom right corner and then click 'connect'. Not ideal, but better than having to fire up the terminal and entering the commands manually.

Thank you all!

Install went absolutely fine, except that after reboot the text bit of the installer looked distorted and all over the place (difficult to explain... as if each menu is split in 2 or 3 boxes and they show up in different parts of the screen). This means I couldn't see the installer menus properly.
A few of the previous alphas did this on my computer, but not the latest ones.

By remembering the menus, I reached X configuration, and after that it was sorted.

Chose Portuguese language in GDM: worked properly.
But then chose English (United States) and it seemed to go from gdm to kdm by itsef. Perhaps gdm crashed and it reverts to kdm? Tried to choose "configuration" again, but a message showed up saying I wasn't running gdm!

More to come...

Got the sound working.

Got the Internet connection working.

And now the hammer!

Thanks to the tip of caitlyn I installed gutenprint etc. and was able to configure
my printer with the printer switched on. Put something into the print queue and it would
not print. lpq showed the queue.

Switched the printer off and again on and --the system crashed, showing a blank screen and
rebooted.

Loged-in switched printer on and crash again, this time w/o rebooting meaning the maschine
was switched-off.

End of my testing this version.

My printer and the USB connection works perfectly in slackware-12.1, same cups version et all.
And have to add worked for a long time in VL5.8, different cups version so.

HAL Magically started working for me.  I have installed lots of additional software but none of it should have affected HAL.  I have no clue what really changed to make it work.

On my install both AbiWord and Gnumeric work -- no missing GNOME bits after a normal hosted install.

I tried a session in Hebrew.  The Programs menu in Xfce correctly shifted to the right hand corner and everything worked right-to-left as it should.  Yofi!

Hi,
I've had problems with the installer. Rather than post a really long report here, I've included a link to an article on my blog at http://reddevil62-techhead.blogspot.com/2008/11/vector-linux-6-beta-and-sticky-gui.html

I have the same problem in 5.9 when using wicd AND the rc.inet* scripts.
If I change the scripts names, then wicd starts fine, and no need to press connect.

Perhaps the same thing is happening in 6.0?

This one went perfectly as far as installing Vector goes.
It was not able to set up a boot for my windows partition, however. This has been mentioned in an earlier post.
It does lock up when booting as gui, I need to use tui and startx to get it to launch. This is true on the toshiba machine as well.
Also wicd does not always appear on the panel. Running wicd-client in the terminal only makes it complain the service is not running. Sometimes re-doing autosetup networking in vasmcc is necessary to make it appear again.

One small thing Generate Report in System Profiler and Benchmark does not work...shuts down and no report, just an empty file.

Really appreciate what you guys are doing.  Would love to see Vector break into the top ten at Distrowatch. I would also like to suggest maybe including the symantic touchpad driver and xorg set-up during install.
Thanks Ken

Change which script names to what? Although I'm fairly comfortable with linux let's pretend that I know just enough about Vector to be dangerous  ;)

I reenabled my onboard sound card and now can choose between that and the sound blaster in volume control but still can't get any sound.

I found a fix. Though it is rather general, because I do not know exactly what font file or files are the ones that provide the fix.
I copied the entire usr/share/font file from my partition of vl5.9 and used it to replace the one in vl6.0 beta
(This alone fixes the problem and I can launch the x-server normally)
I then copied the usr/share/X11/rgb  text file from vl5.9 and put it into vl6.0 beta as it was missing.

I was then able to boot to the window manager and beyond.

I have only made this change to the system that has the GeForce 6150 LE/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!, card.  I will try it on the others as well to see if it fixes any other problems.
I'm hoping it will also help with my resolution problem on the toshiba as it also uses a nvidia card.
Ken

Odd that this fix was only necessary on my systems with the nvidia card.

I installed beta 1 today using vinstall-iso from my VL6 a2 partition on my Celeron desktop. The CD drive on this computer is getting flaky and won't boot from a home-burned CD, so I have to use vinstall-iso, which precludes me from testing the GUI installer. Truth be told, I'd rather use the text installer anyway. Also, I boot to Level 2, the text login, and start XFce with startx.

I had no problems with the text installer, as usual, and this time I paid attention to things like typos and inconveniences. Early in the installation is this:
"say 'come on'whenever you are ready too:"
That should be "are ready to" because the following three choices complete the infinitive.

In Bulks Selection I think there should be an explanation that /dev/tlz is essential for compiling packages and should be installed by most users even if they think they'll never compile anything. I would fall in that category, except that over the years I've found that I have had to compile a program occasionally whether I wanted to or not.<g>

In Select Keyboard Layout I couldn't read the whole line for en_US and us_intl, which would make it impossible for me to know which one I wanted if I hadn't already done this many times. In Set Groups I couldn't see the whole line for any group. The right end is cut off. This makes it very difficult to decide what groups a user should belong to. I have the same problem in Add Partition--I can't see the whole name of the partition. The name will say /dev/hda instead of /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2, etc. When I actually am setting up the partition and its mount point, the complete identification is visible, but it's not on the Add Partition screen list. I've had this problem of having lines cut off for several versions and I wonder if anyone sees the whole line. My monitor is a 19" LCD with 1280x1024 resolution.

There is another typo in Set DNS Server where it says "helps to find another hosts by their Internet name." It should be "helps to find other hosts by their Internet name."

All my hardware was correctly identified, but my sound disappeared when I removed the Programs button from the XFce panel. I always ditch that "Start" menu in the Panel because the same menu appears with a right-click on the desktop. But when I removed it, the volume control and speaker icon also disappeared from the panel. Sound did not work after this. I ran the Sound part of VASMCC and got ALSA back along with the speaker icon and volume control and I was able to play an MP3 file with VLC. I'll take note of whether ALSA disappears again.

I installed Gimp-Help, Scribus, OpenOffice 3, and Inkscape from the Vector repos. Scribus complained that Ghostscipt was not installed and is needed for Preview and displaying what a font looks like in the font dialog boxes. I installed GhostScript and that took care of it, but I wonder why it isn't installed by default. I get messages about a bunch of missing Scribus plugins. I haven't had time yet to see if the plugins are there and if not, whether I can download them from the Scribus Web site or copy them over from my other partitions. Inkscape lacks several dependencies. I copied them over from my VL6 a.33 partition because I couldn't find them in the repos. This was the message:
inkscape: error while loading shared libraries: libcairomm-1.0.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Also missing were libMagick++.so.10, libWand.so.10, libMagick.so.10. Once I copied these from my other partition, Inkscape started fine.

Opera was using Flash 9. I haven't had time to check on the Flash version for Firefox and SeaMonkey. There are security problems with Flash 9, so I think VL6 should install Flash 10. I've been using Flash 10 on VL6 a.33 and it has been working including in Opera. On my VL 5.9 Deluxe computer Opera 9.62 can't work with Flash 10. If I need Flash, I use SeaMonkey for that site.

I hope to do more testing tomorrow.

Changed my mind and tested again.

Installed another kernel-2.6.27.7 and modules.

Printer now printing, no crashes. In fact all working nicely sofar.

An old problem reappeared.  I had set my hostname during install (like GrannyGeek, a hosted install with vinstall-iso) but found I had the default name and my machine was called vector.  I changed it again and hopefully it will stay this time.

My little experiment..

I copied the entire usr/share/font file from my partition of vl5.9 and used it to replace the one in vl6.0 beta
I then copied the usr/share/X11/rgb  text file from vl5.9 and put it into vl6.0 beta as it was missing.

Here is what happened...

1. I was able to boot my HP desktop AMD64x2 GeForce 6150, previously it failed at launching the x-server.
2. I was able to get wicd to auto-connect my internet at every GUI-mode start-up. This never happened before on either my Toshiba laptop or xplio laptop. (wicd still fails when I lauch in tui)
3. My xplio (a pentium 4 2.2ghz with Mesa DRI Intel graphics) was able to boot in gui mode without freezing up like it had been doing before.
4. I was able to get the full 1440x900 resolution my Toshiba w/ GeForce 7300 laptop is capable of.  Again, I was not able to get better than 800x600 resolution before.
5. I am now able to generate reports with System Profiler and Benchmark.

I am admittedly just a hack when it comes to this kind of stuff.  I only got the idea to try it because the error message from my xserver problem with my desktop said...

Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removing from list
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removing from list

So I just copied over from 5.9 all the fonts from the /fonts file and since xorg.conf called for usr/share/X11/rgb, I copied that over too.

I still have to test printing and individual programs/panel applets and the like, but I am 100% up and running for the basics on all three machines.

Could another tester confirm that they are also missing /usr/share/fonts/OTF and usr/share/X11/rgb from there burns of the .iso?  I don't want to keep posting my experiences if it was just from a bad burn..even though my md5 checksum was good.

Oh, could that someone, also confirm the /usr/share/fonts/TTF has about 60% of the fonts that the same file in VL5.9 had?
Thanks
Ken

Fonts rendered beautifully on Vl5.9.
Not on 6.0 beta 1 (or indeed any of alphas)
I have installed extra/cross copied fonts etc - but still they still look nasty.
It appears as though the hinting in xfce doesn't actually do anything.

Suggesions would be appreciated, or a fix.

Installed fluxbox 1.1 since I am familiar with it. No problems.

In /etc/fstab enabled "/dev/sda1 on /mnt/pendrive type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,fmask=111,dmask=0,quiet,shortname=mixed)"

mounted /mnt/pendrive and flashdrive is accessible or digital camera accessible with gtkam.

abiword and gnumeric opening flawlessly.

dillo showing black pages and therefore not much of use. I know this will go away once I have my working /home directory mounted.

Alt-F2 gives me a  'Run program' window in fluxbox.

I have no /usr/share/fonts/OTF or /usr/share/X11/rgb on my VL6 beta 1 installation. I can't compare the number of fonts in /usr/share/fonts/TTF because back when I installed VL 5.9 I moved bunches of fonts from /TTF to another directory I have for fonts I don't use. Some of those may have been installed from the 5.9 ISO.

For you guys looking for fonts, the best way would be to install some from gslapt. Due to lack of space on the ISO, only the fonts needed for the initial gui have been included AFAIK.

Mine still looks good with no additional fonts installed though ;)
Title: Re: Vector 6.0 beta1 feedback and bug reports

I got my four printers installed and working. However, this was after I installed foomatic and Ghostscript from the repos with GSlapt and rebooted. I don't understand why there isn't enough on the ISO to enable CUPS to work with non-PostScript printers. I know it'll be fixed in the final release, but why not in the betas?

I wanted to install J-Pilot for my beloved Sony Clie but it wasn't in the repos for VL 6. I downloaded a package from linuxpackages.net and installed it with installpkg. I haven't had a chance to sync yet, but the program does launch. I was missing two or three dependencies. I copied them over from my VL 5.9 partition and that seems to have done the trick.

I installed Flash 10 for Linux, replacing Flash 9 that's installed with the ISO, because Flash 9 has a security problem. Opera is now working with Flash 10, which it doesn't on VL 5.9 and early alphas for VL 6. However, Opera often hangs when I try to download a file. I use SeaMonkey when I want to download a file (or wget).

Alt-F2 doesn't work in XFce. I haven't plugged in a flash drive yet. I didn't have Caitlyn's problem with the computer name changing after a reboot. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi,
I did install additional fonts through gslapt, also copied some fonts from 5.9 including missing rgb file.
Its more a hinting problem really, in 5.9 I can see the hinting change as I change the setting in xfce which is not so in 6.0B.
Also I had to install the latest Nvidia driver after installation, as for some reason 3d accelleration was lacking on the included propietory one. The rendering is ok, but not beautiful as was the case in 5.9.

By nature, X will look for a manager, first looking for GDM, then if it doesn't find it, it will look for another, KDM, and even then, if it doesn't find that it will look for another ...
(not necessarily in this order).

So in short, yes, it will "default" to another manager if there is one installed.

If I could get you to switch languages again in that order, see if the "crash-and-switch" happens again (that's just my nickname for that :) ) And then try other languages, back to US/english, and see if it's just that or all... ty.

I'd love to switch to 6.0 cause its fast, but the font hinting doesnt seem to work(either changing config files or via xfce) and I do love a great looking font. I have checked through most config files for x11 and xfce and all seems ok. Any ideas?

A couple of bugs more :

kdm session manager has openbox-gnome and openbox-kde, but both fail to start.

I installed ratpoison, and unlike previous VL versions ratpoison.desktop is not already there, so I had to create a ratpoison.desktop file in /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions . I restarted X but when I click on the session changer button, everything seems to hang.... could anyone confirm this? it's very strange....

-----EDIT-----

I see vl6 is running gdm, but kdm files are there too (confusing) . I created a file in /usr/share/xsessions and everything went fine.  Now the question is:

Why we don't stick with a desktop manager, and make it default for many versions? wm packagers will have to redo all wm only to change the path where they have to place their XYZ.desktop.

Title: Re: Vector 6.0 beta1 feedback and bug reports

The reason for switching to gdm AFAIK is because it supports changing language and locale in the GUI easily, either for a single session or as the system default.  kdm does not.  This functionality is critical to multilingual and international users.  Previously you had to set a whole slew of variables (LANG, LANGUAGE, LINGUAS, LC_ALL) in a couple of different places.

I honestly don't see the point of keeping kdm once the issues with gdm are solved.  xdm is still there as a fall back.  That's what Zenwalk does and this is one place I'd like to see VL follow their lead.

Great explanation cait. Now the change kdm->gdm makes sense to me.

If we have xdm as a fallback, I'd vote for removing kdm too.

Beta 1.2. GUI install completed without problems. One item - problem with rxvt-unicode. The description was not fully visible. When installing 1.1, the install failed on rxvt-unicode, so I chickened out and didn't attempt to install it.

As some others have reported, I'm seeing problems with font rendering. Thought at first it might be my freetype 2.3.7 build, but on checking, I find I'm using the same version (built from the same build script) under 5.9, and I'm not seeing the same problems there.

The difference is really noticeable in things like Seamonkey.

But, at least here, gdm seems much slower. Is it my imagination?

Tried Beta 1 on an aspire one.
As mentioned before, something about the resolution (1024x600) screws it up. I got a message saying "display not supported" or something to that effect and ended up choosing 800x600 from a list.

But not everything is visible in the installer (to the right), which renders it unusable.

I'll give it another try and see if hiding the sidebar makes any difference.

By mistake I originally posted this in the beta 1 announcement in Distro Releases. I attached a note there requesting that any comments be made here in Distro Development.

I tried to sync my Sony Clie using JPilot. No luck. No error messages at the command line when I launched JPIlot as root or user. I discovered that pilot-link wasn't installed. So I installed that with G-Slapt but I had the same results.

I've been using the instructions posted by Joe1962 for a few years and they've always worked. I also added a 03-local.rules to /etc/udev/rules.d, as required for VL 5.9 and presumably later, which I got on this forum from derrell. Tomorrow I'll reboot the computer and see if things go better. But for now, I can't sync my Ciie, which is a major problem for me.

UPDATE: I tried to sync with the Clie after a cold boot today. No luck. I've started JPilot at a terminal as root and as user and the Clie reports that it couldn't make a connection. JPilot reports nothing, nor are there any error messages at the command line.

I realize that Palm devices are getting very long in the tooth and I don't care if pilot-link, jpilot, and whatever else is needed are omitted from the ISO, but I hope we'll have packages in the repos we can install if we want them.

Here is my system Toshiba Satellite 2805-S301 PIII Coppermine 256 meg memory 40 gig partition for install of VL 6.0. I tried gui install and text install both failed. The gui will install the system but does not honor the added user. after booting into the system messagebus fails on boot and there is only the root user. So I say no problem I'll create the user but ther is no useradd command or groupadd command so I cannot add a new user. If I try to update the system using VASMCC I get a failed error that gslapt is broken.

When using the text installer it progresses through the install of the files then fails with a cannot expand the file error and offers me a choice to retry. Saying check the partitions or drive size. I tried letting VL format the partitions and I also created and formated the partitions myself. oh BTW I do not use a seperate home partition just a root and swap partition. Just another note VL 5.9 will install fine.
