Title: gambas/python/ruby
Post by: Windozer on December 17, 2008, 07:15:59 pm
Noticed the gambas thread...

looks similar to python, but simple, like ruby.

Anyone tried all three?

thanks,

Maybe no one has used all 3! I know I have only used Gambas, so I figured you didn't need my answer... ;)

Hey guys, thanks for the reply ... sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Well, OK, I've got too much on my plates already, so I'll report back here in a while with more. Here's the obvious things so far:

gambas - very nice if you've used VB or VBE or any similar MS IDE. Not as sophisticated as those, but still really useful.

Python - just like the combination of Serpent and Monty Python - flexible, powerful, yet crazy as a larch. I do most of my math and scientific coding in it. Just wish the modules/libs weren't so hard to remember.  If you're going to C, C++, or C#, Python is a good, but somewhat difficult start. It has a Zillion libraries and utilities. As Epic Fall Guy mentions elsewhere, and I second, the interactive version of Python (called IPython) is the best interactive environment going... and I've tried more than my share!

Ruby - clean, sweet, easy to use - surprisingly powerful. I've done a ton of scripting over the years - un/fortunately 99% on the MS platform - still have much to (re)learn about *nix shells, but I'd highly recommend Ruby as a starter programming language.  Ruby on Rails is REALLY cool for web stuff.

more as time permits... back to hacking...

I've been jacking around a bit with eclipse... of couse overwhelmingly bloated, but the python plugin is real nice

Interesting - there's so much to follow these days, it's impossible to keep up. Although I've not used it at all, the PyDev IDE looks very functional - do you think it would be good for general-purpose coding, or is it really geared mostly for eclipse?

The pydev is is really for python.. haven't used it for anything else myself... the eclipse IDE can do other languages. It takes all kinds of plugins

Wow, M0E!

the eclipse IDE has some big names backing it - the whole thing is java centric, but that plug-in Pydev seems like it's worth looking into further... I'll mess around with it some too.

thanks for the tip.

Hi people :)
I'm first time here and i like Vector Linux.
Vector interest me in first place becose have included Gambas.
I'm also author of small basic like language caled Aurel Basic.
Many people ask me why i  dont port ABasic to linux.
So i have plan make ABasic in Gambas.

My question is :
Is Gambas 2 included in Vector 6.0 Standard or only in Light edition?
I'm not expert for linux and not expert for Gambas but i will learn.(i hope).

Gambas2 is available at our repositories and can be installed in any vectorlinux edition (version limitations may apply... see your local repo for details ;) )

No... seriously...
the runtime package is included I believe, you'd have to install the IDE from the repositiries.

Thanks people...
Just one small advice.

Which version you can recomend me?
I see that light use only LXDE and i have 5.9 light but i can change resolution?
I do something wrong or bug?
And standard has Xfce which is better option , i think...

Thanks advance...
Aurel
