Title: VectorLinux 6.0 FINAL is here!!!
Post by: vector on February 21, 2009, 09:14:40 pm
The final release of VectorLinux 6.0 (code name 'Voyager') is now available. This release is a major milestone in the ten year history of Vectorlinux. With the unbridled enthusiasm of a community gone wild, we have forged our very own stable GUI installer and our repository now hosts over a thousand packages. VectorLinux is the fastest Linux desktop in it's class. We have exceeded our original goals of VectorLinux 6.0 and produced a beautiful, full featured stable desktop for a rocket fueled experience.

The main desktop is based on Xfce-4.4.3 with a custom theme and artwork again unique to VectorLinux. LXDE is installed as a secondary desktop option. Much work has been done on localization and we know users from all over the globe will find VectorLinux a stellar experience.

All the VectorLinux trademarks are included: DVD playback, Audio and Video Codecs, Multimedia and Java plugins are installed and working out of the box. The best of the Open Source world is included: Gimp, Inkscape, Gtkam, Gqview and Xpdf for Graphics; Firefox, Opera, Dillo and Seamonkey for Internet Browsing;  aMsn, Pidgin and Xchat for instant messaging; K3b and our very own vburn for CD burning; Mplayer, XMMS, Xine and VLC for playing most available media formats. The office applications are Gnumeric, Abiword and Scribus.

Wireless networking has been extended with updated drivers and firmware, Wicd has been employed to manage wireless and non wireless networking. Firestarter is included for firewall protection and there is added support for several webcam makes and models.

With all the improvements in installation, usability and hardware Support, we believe this release will finally give Vectorlinux the desktop recognition it deserves.

The Deluxe version, that includes extras like KDE-4.2, E17, OpenOffice, Skype, Realplayer, Playonlinux and Assaultcube for the gamers is available for high speed download or shipping. The Deluxe version has special graphics and themes that make it even more gorgeous than the Standard version. There is also a beautiful set of unique stick on Vector PC badges included with the shipping version. Order a copy today support the work we do and give yourself a delightful computing experience.

A special "Thank You" to the testers that helped during the development phase, especially with the installer and the language translations.

This notice was accidentally omitted from the release announcement:

We have worked very hard to make the GUI installer work on as many systems as possible. However, we know that it (like any gui installer) will not work 100% of the time.
If you have trouble using it on your system, please type "linux" at the cdrom boot prompt to run our traditional installer.

Thanks for that uelsk8s! Myself, I prefer the "traditional Slacky" installer. ;) I'm in it for the pain. LOL!

Congrats to Vector, and everyone else involved, plus the entire Community on this---the 10th Anniversary! Woohoo! :) And what a perfect way to celebrate it, eh? *dancing*

And here's to the next decade of VectorLinux! Long may our hard drives turn![/b]

Thanks one and all!

Sorry to spoil the party, guys, but did anyone manage to get X-server running?

I manully fixed "could not open default font fixed", but couldn't handle "could not open default font cursor".

I downloaded this last night and installed it this morning. Very nice!

I especially like the addition of Wicd. No more rebooting if wireless does'nt work on startup. Yes there are other ways to restart wireless but not for the other users in my house. This will be really appreciated.

This was my first try using the graphical installer. Only found a couple of display problems ( progress bar and Lilo install option partially obscured. Other than that very nice. Like EyesOnly I perfer the traditional installer but that is probably because of familiarity. For anyone new to Vector this is bound to be a great improvement.

After about four hours of playing around I am very pleased.

Thanks for all of the hard work!

Vanger:  No problem at all with X here.  Worked perfectly right out of the virtual box.

I'd suggest you post in the "X Rated" section of the forum and include specs for your video chipset or graphics card.  I'm sure we can get your issue sorted out.  Of course, if the fonts are really missing that would indicate a bad burn or corrupted download.

Seriously, everyone, congratulations on a great release. I certainly hope everyone is doing well in Vectorland. (Vectorville?) ;)

I just wanted to take a minute to point out something about the graphics.
We have worked especially hard to put higher quality graphics into the Deluxe.
This does not effect the performance (which I'm sure you will also find better in the Deluxe). We will continue this for future releases. So, if you want a VL that looks even prettier AND performs better than the free version go get your Deluxe today.

Thanks to everyone in the community,  who have worked so hard to help us along the way .

Forgive me if this is an inappropriate place to ask..

Is there a estimated date for a final version of VL6 Lite?

Very nice. I'm offering my support to vector by buying the deluxe edition. Something I don't do for many things I can get for free. Vector certainly has a log of potential.

Was really surprised that gui installer went without any hitches.  Well done people.

Now, I'm back to trying to get my system to work - it didn't help that I picked up an outdated backup of /etc/hosts.  But we're working through this a step at a time and I'm looking forward to a system that works.  I'm getting some personal help which has shown me things I never even thought of.

I, too, will be purchasing the deluxe version. (Is that blasphemy!  ;D )

(emphasis mine)

Is the improved performance due to compilation and/or runtime tweaks to the same applications as the free version?  I've been looking at VL 5.9 Light, and will look at VL6 Light; would I get better performance "slimming down" VL6 Deluxe or just using VL6 Light?

My "testbed" system: 512MB VM, under QEMU on XP
My "real" system, if the testing continues to be favorable: ~1GHZ Pentium, 256MB, 40 GB HD.

I bought the Deluxe download version and stayed up most of the night downloading the ISOs and burning the CDs.

I used the old reliable text installer on my 1.3 GHz Celeron desktop. As expected, everything went smoothly, no problems whatever. I have a partition with VL6RC4 on this computer, so I simply copied over much of my home directory plus things I had installed in /opt and /usr/share, which is a very quick and easy way to be right where I want to be. What took me the most time was moving the multitude of non-Western fonts out of /usr/share/fonts to a /usr/share/moved_fonts directory I created that is not on the font path. I'm glad VL is better internationalized but I DON'T want fonts loaded I'll never use. So I move those somewhere else (thereby uninstalling them) and I also comment out a couple of directories listed in xorg.conf. There are also fonts installed that I simply don't like or that are Type III (but I have a Type 1 version of them in my font collection). I move those to another directory I've set up and if anything complains, I can simply put them back.

I'm sorry to say that I don't like the new wallpaper for 6 Deluxe. No problem--I replaced it with the VL6 matrix wallpaper. I wasn't able to use VASMCC to set some things up because THE FONT IS TOO SMALL! It's too hard on my eyes. So I exited X and ran VASM in the console and was able to actually see what I needed to.

Tomorrow I hope to install VL6 Deluxe on my laptop.

Great job, Vector and the rest of the crew! I LOVE IT!

In part, we have selected a different theming method, which seems to be more responsive than that chosen for the free version. There are other tweaks which helped to improve. The applications aren't exactly the same as the free version, although many that you find on the free are also found in the Deluxe. The Deluxe has a whole lot more included.
You even get a case sticker, how cool is that!?
As for comparing to the Light, there is a completely different approach taken in the light version. For much older , slower systems, you may want the light, as some thing in the STD (free and Deluxe) may not run as well on these systems. As far as I know of, the Light 6.0 is still being completed. So with that , I have not yet been able to compare the STD with Light.
I have done my personal comparison of the STD, free and Deluxe, on the same machine back to back. I hope this helps answer your question.

Masta,

I'm curious about this. Did you all compile the kernel itself differently, say doing something like altering the scheduler, for these various versions?

thanks

Question - were there any substantive changes to VL6 between RC4 and the final version?

Congratulations to the Vector team on the new release!

As far as I know of the kernel is still the same compilation. One thing that we try to do here in VL, is to keep as much usability in the free version as we do in the Deluxe. We do not hinder the free version in any way, like some other distro's are known to do.
As for the technical details on what makes it seem to perform better on Deluxe than Free.. well, All I can really tell you about it is that for one thing, even though the graphics are higher quality, they are smaller in file size, this helps a lot. The other thing I've noticed is the theming method that was chosen on XFCE's desktop, it just runs better as in more snapier.

You may get different results than I do on my test machine, but I'm sure those results would show some improvement. I'm just telling my findings. I have been using the free version all throught on that test machine, while it was being built and tested. It has, since Beta stages, ran quite well. When it came time for the Deluxe, I noticed an improvement. I have not done the stop watch timing, nor have I looked at the resource loads or any of that. I just go by what I see and feel.
And the test machine is certainly SLOW to me since I have much faster systems that can run circles around it all day long. Anything that makes that thing feel a bit faster, I am sure to point it out.

Well done to Vector and the rest of the team for what looks like the ideal distro for me.

Title: Bootflag
Post by: hmhofman on February 24, 2009, 05:13:24 am
Great Distro.
I had it installed in VirtualBox for a while, but tried the final on a Acer Aspire 1306 last night (had a spare disk).
I had to install it twice though, because of the boot flag partitioning the drive.
It actually installed my wireless card (in OpenSuse 11.x, I had to install ndiswrapper)
Since I'm just a beginner in Linux (have quite some WinXP experience), some no-know improvements:

I'm looking forward to the LiveCD.
It's great demonstrating (vector) linux on a customer's pc.
It's easy checking internet availability on a 'broken' pc.

From what I can see, VL6 works great. It's fast, easy (I like the WLAN configuration), clean, GREAT!

Thanks for the info, Masta.  Once the Light version comes out, I'll give it a whirl.  XFCE is actually getting a bit too bloated for my taste, and I'm beginning to like LXDE.

Just FYI, the reason the non-Western fonts have to be loaded initially is so that someone who uses a language other than English gets a usable system at first boot.  Let's say you preferred Russian to English.  You do the install in Russian (now supported) and choose Russian as your default language at first boot in gdm.  Can you imagine what it would look like with no Cyrillic fonts?  It would be unusable.  Loading the fonts allows VL to "just work" for users around the globe.

There is a way around it used by some other distros that have better internationalization than VL:  when the installer language is chosen (and they usually have dozens of choices, not five) those fonts are loaded but not everything.  Some installers (think Mandriva, Red Hat) then let you choose additional languages to support from a menu during the install.  This allows only the truly needed fonts to be included.  Hopefully M0E_lnx and uelsk8s are reading this because that would be a great addition to the next version of the installer :)  Everyone would be happier.

Some of the international fonts also have really nice Latin (English) glyphs.  I use Miriam CLM Book Mono as my default terminal font for everything.  I will admit I was surprised (shocked, really) when Culmus Fonts became part of the default install.  I'm not complaining, though, since I use them anyway.

Anyway, the only app in the repo that looks for specific fonts and will have issues if you don't have them installed is PW, part of SIAG Office.  If you don't have that or any apps specifically designed for international use you probably can safely uninstall most any fonts you don't like with gslapt.

HTH,
Cait

My "moving fonts" saga wasn't a complaint that the fonts are installed, just describing what I do to cut down on the number of installed fonts. I appreciate your explanation of why they're there and I certainly wouldn't want non-English speakers to have to learn English just to install VL.

It takes a few minutes to remove the ones I don't want, but it's something I do once and never again. I don't remove the fonts from the system, just move them where the font system won't find them; I have plenty of room.

Today I installed VL6 Deluxe on my notebook. I used the text installer, as I prefer it.

No problems at all. I used the proprietary NVidia driver. The best news is that I got my wireless working almost right off the bat. I use fixed IP addresses and my ISP's DNS servers, as well as WPA, so manual setting up is necessary. I set up wlan0 with VASM and I ran VLwifi, but after that I was able to ping my router and get on the Internet. The interesting thing is that I didn't have to do anything for the driver. In the past I had to use ndiswrapper. The wireless chip is a Realtek 8185. lsmod shows that rtl8180 is loaded, so apparently it's working okay now. I haven't rebooted, so I don't know if this setup wil survive a reboot, but gettng it going was the easiest time I've ever had with this wireless chip. I'm using the wireless to send this.

Although I didn't like the looks of the default VL6 Deluxe wallpaper on the Celeron desktop, I do like it on my laptop.

Next I'll put VL6 on the Athlon 64 X2 desktop.

Got the Deluxe, installed it, was pleasantly unsurprised.  :D

I mean to say ... the Standard free download edition is fantastic, as I expected, and the Deluxe is noticeably faster/has lots of extra goodies/etc. ... so it was no surprise to find out how well it works and how nice it looks.

You people are spoiling me.

Thanks to everyone who made this release possible.

I installed VL 6 Deluxe on my Athlon 64 X2 desktop. As with the two earlier installations, this one was perfect (text installer).

I used the ATI proprietary driver and at the end of setting up X, I got an error message that something incorrect happened and did I want to edit xorg.conf or run x configuration again. I chose to edit xorg.conf. The driver was listed as radeon and I changed it to fglrx. Then I did startx and XFce came up just fine. My glxgears results would indicate that the fglrx driver is indeed the one that is working.

So now VL6 Deluxe is on my three Linux computers and the fun can begin! Thanks again to the devs and everyone who worked on this.

Hurray for 6.0!

I've been vectoring since 5.8(RIP), and claim no level of proficiency
I recently joined forum after installing 6.0 gold.  I've been lurking a lot before
then, but now have an urge to utilize the community (see below)

I just purchased Deluxe in order to bombard customer support with
questions I didn't want to  dig through on the forum. CS is batting 0 for 3;
they are prompt with responses, but rtfm type answers don't take long...

Can someone instruct me how many kde apps (of the 55 on cd) that I need to
get a kde wm going?

PS sorry to be such a wet blanket, I really admire all of the work and ingenuity that goes into
Vector Linux.  I have a lot of respect for the community.  What it boils down to, is I want to
be part of sticking it to MS, but I'm running out of time to fiddle with Linux.  I've been going at it for three years in my off time and still can't achieve 2/3 of my goals to achieving MS freedom.  I'm near to giving up.

for a fully functional KDE4 desktop you need to install all 55 of those packages, and any deps they pull with gslapt/slapt-get

If you post the specific problems you are having in the proper, relevant part of the forum you may find that lots of people in the community can help you.  There is a forum section called "Migrating to Vector Linux" that may well fit the bill.

I know lots of people (myself included) who don't use Windows at all and don't feel like they are missing a thing.

Now if the installer works, I'll be happy.  :XD:  It bombs after the Windows drive mounting selection and I click the "full intall" button.    That was the Gold ISO download.  Thankfully all of my data is on another drive.  :D

Problem with De-Luxe download.

Just paid for VL6 via PayPal. Unfortunately it switched to German when I gave Switzerland as my country.
I couldn't find a download link so I supposed that it would be in the e-mail confirmation. Not so!

I have the e-mail confirmation from Elpern & Associates, Inc. but I can't find a way to get the download link.

Help would be appreciated, thanks

I have been using std gold 6 for a while and its really fast, stable and humdining!
Installed easily and faultlessly. (the only hacks now required are for 5button mouse and gb keyboard in xorg.conf).

I'm celebrating: I ordered Deluxe yesterday. I won't get the chance to install and appreciate it until Tuesday or Wednesday, but today I was marveling at how Vector is the only flavor of Linux I support financially. I confess that I distro hop; the grass always looks greener, and all that. But I keep coming back, to SOHO, to Light, and now to Standard, too. I really do not even really know why. Oh, wait a minute. I know: Vector Rocks!

I'll post my first impressions mid-week.

I'm a bit late to the VL6.0 party but loving it so far. It seems even snappier than 5.9 - is that possible? Great work team!

One question about the installers. I ran the text and GUI installers side-by-side on identical P3 machines and they took 35 and 60 minutes respectively to do a full install. The file copying stage took much longer under the GUI - has anyone else found that? Other than that the GUI install is nice, especially for new users.

Cheers
Andy

Hi, Andy,

Yes, your experience matches mine.  Worse, gslapt-notifier doesn't work after a GUI install.  It works perfectly after a text install.  Oh, and yes, slapt-update-notifier-daemon is running.

Cait

This is sort of off topic, but as good a place as any to say that ditching gslapt-notifier is one of the first things I do when I install VL 6. I hate having that icon in the system tray. It reminds me of Windows Updates, which also "favors" you with an annoying icon. (I turn off Windows Automatic Updates, too.)

I run Gslapt every day anyway, so I don't need gslapt-notifier. It's a useful feature for those who want it, but I wish the option to disable it were a bit more obvious.

[nic],

Just a quick question. Are you running VectorLinux on your eeepc 900? Someone I know is wondering of VL works on the eee 900.

GrannyGeek,

I installed it on my eeepc 900, but some things weren't working.
ethernet adapter didn't work and also the ssd cardreader.
I managed to make the wireless connection work with the madwifi-nr-r3366+ar5007 driver. If u want you can get it from http://users.telenet.be/nicdm/packages/madwifi-nr-r3366+ar5007.tar.gz (http://users.telenet.be/nicdm/packages/madwifi-nr-r3366+ar5007.tar.gz).

A the time I tried VL 5.9, maybe 6.0 will work even better.

For sure. VL6 comes with a lot of drivers for the components that are used in most netbooks.

Thanks for the report, [nic]. The fact that you got it working is encouraging, and I think there's a very good chance that the problematic things will work with the increased hardware support in VL 6.

My friend is currently using Kubuntu and is very happy with it. I doubt he'd be willing to remove it and give VL a try, but the next time someone wonders whether VL would work on an eee, I'll say "it's been done."

Man you guys rock!!!  I been vectoring on and off for a couple of years.  Vector Linux has been my old standby, if nothing else works, Vector will.  I guess I finally got a clue and have switched my main distro to VL.  6.0 is clean and I like the new tweeks in VASM.  Whole distro is really clean.  Only complaint is it didn't turn on netwrking upon first boot.  VASM networking stuff wouldn't turn it on either.  Had to do it from the command line.  But no biggie.  Since thats all I had to do to VL.  I'm really happy.

Hi Peeps,
Long admirer of the polish of VectorLinux Desktops. I have just recently purchased the standard deluxe set (download). Read the readme text on how to add the 2nd cd to the GSlapt repo in preferences but not sure if I am doing it right or working right - when I tried to install wine from the CD it said there was not enough space (assume it was trying to install on itself - the CD) any help appreciated so I can try Enlightenment (E17) and KDE 4 etc.

Best regards,
swarfendor437

PS I thought MegaMario was on one of these versions - should I have purchased SOHO instead?

As far as adding a cd in Gslapt so that it can get packages from it, the path should be /mnt/cdrom/packages. There should be a way to add new repos in the Gslapt preferences. You just add the cdrom like another repo.

Installing Wine: "not enough space" sounds like your root partition doesn't have enough space on it. All packages installed by Gslapt are installed to the root partition. Check your root partition and see how much space you have left on it.

Megamario is in the VL 5.9 repos for sure. I don't know about the 6.0 repos. You might be able to run VL 5.9 apps on VL 6.0 (somebody correct me here if I'm wrong). Here is the ftp site you could put into Gslapt if you want to try it.

ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.9/packages/

Hello, wrong place to ask this type of questions, but anyway try to enter   file:///media/cdrom0/packages/     as package source and if not    file:///media/vectordlxcd2/packages/   maybe will do it, i had to enter that on another of my computers to make it work, good luck!

Otherwise you could always look at the uppermost part of thunar and draw your own conclusions about what source name you should use ;)

Just wanted to drop a note to the developers of VL 6.0

ROCK ON VECTOR DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok flash back to the 80's. Over all VL 6.0 has been great. I still test other distros once in a while, but even with flashy graphics, and the Debian spin, VL keps on trucking. Things work mostly, and if they don't there are folks like Moe and Big Paws that walk folks though the glitches that just happen with any OS. My younger kids haven't been able to break it, but they do try, my teenager has broken it but thats what he gets. He decided to go back to Ubuntu, but he needed to log in as root to fix something, and found out root doesn't exist! Only SUDO. LOL

Good job guys.

Chuck

I tried to tell him that but he wanted a root account that he could log in to. Plus the VASM was really missed when he broke the X server

I know that feeling! One of the reasons why I settled on VL years ago, was that it has that nifty little "TUI" boot option and the vasm tools that I could use to fix X, and other stuff that I managed to break.  ;D

Wish that when my kids are older, I will have the same discussions...... That would be nice.

Root is something I actually miss with Pardus. And assigning permission for package manager and network to a user is not a way I like. (Further very happy with it for two years).

Typing this from VL6.0STD and it works great. It's a laptop Acer Aspire 5050, Everything works.
I would have liked to test it with My AA1, but it is stolen.... I doubt between Samsung NC10 or asus eee 1000 HE (Every disadvantage has its advantage, mr Cruijf would say)  ;)

Some questions:
Should there be speed improvements with a 64 bits version? Or only trouble improvements?
I read there is an easy way to localize the system. But what if your language (dutch) is missing. How can I add it? It isn't in GDM, so now xfce is dutch. Sorry. I only need to localize programs like FF (waiting til 3.010 comes out of testing) and Openoffice (installed via Gslapt off course). didn't know gooo is that much faster than standard ooo. Nice extra (shouldn't that be mentioned somewhere in the frontpage? It's definitaly a flavour of VL, to choose for gooo over ooo).

The new Vector 6.0 that comes with the Vector badge and advertises KDE and XFCE; does it come with KDE installed, or do you have to install it off a separate disk? I purchased the 5.91 SOHO some time back, and just love it!! KDE is a must for me. I need the functionality. In short, if it comes with KDE, I will buy it.

IIRC KDE4 is in the second CD and KDE· can be installed from the repositories. We can help you to install those, its pretty easy.

I'm brand new and don't know much about what you are talking about half the time. How ever I'm trying put Linux on to a Presario CQ50. Somewhere someone stated that he put VL 6.0 on to a CQ50. I would like to dual-boot and would like some kind of reassurance on how to put it on to my hard drive (Already partitioned) and that I can still use Vista should I need to. Help is very much appreciated.

Hello, welcome to Vector Linux.
Ubk, you probably should start a new thread under Portable VL if you are still having problems.

Or you could message Thunderheights from his post on this topic
http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=7380.0

As for dual booting with Vista, I do it with my Acer notebook. It works well. Just leave Vista on, if your HD is already partitioned then Vector installer will find the partitions and ask where you want to install. Make sure Windows has the first partition. Like Thunderheights, I found VL 6.0 picked up everything quite well. I always use the text-based installer though.

Follow the tutorial at:

I think I love all your versions, but now the Xfce edition - more than the other ones (my PC likes simplicity).

I am very impressed with the current VectorLinux 6.0. Even if I am running folding@home with 100% CPU use, the OS stays responsive for web browsing, video playback and word processing. It is clearly the most efficient and fastest Linux distribution that I have used. The only distribution that is even close for speed is Yoper and that one requires much more work to set up flash, video codecs and other essentials. The stability of Vector is excellent under load.
I did hit some initial hiccups with the installation. The CUPS server did not start on reboot and I had to start it manually. Xsane is not working with my scanner but that is not an issue limited to this distribution.
Any software not in the distribution - clamav, klamav, spamassassin - was easily built from source code.
Vector Linux 6.0 is a great OS and continues the progress of the distribution.

Just as a quick comment, the xsane issues were resolved with uninstalling the xsane, sane-backends and sane-frontends packages and reinstalling from the Sane site source code.

VL6.0 Deluxe CD Set:

While using GSlapt to install KDE from the Second CD I receive a dependency error asking for MySQL which is not on the Second CD. Where do I find MySQL and why is it missing?

Once again many thanks to all the developers who managed to put up such an excellent piece of work.
Would it be possible however to have gcc-4.4.5 instead of the currently distributed gcc-4.2.3 in VectorLinux 6.0?
The reason for this is that I'm having some incompatibility issues with some software.
Thanks very much in advance for any feedback.
