Title: VectorLinux 6.0 Documentation now available
Post by: lagagnon on March 02, 2009, 07:09:43 pm
Revised documentation for VL 6.0 is now available online here:

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/docs/vl60/

Many changes and improvements reflecting new features in VL6.0 are now fully explained. Unfortunately these docs were not ready at the release time of 6.0 Standard or 6.0 Light B2. However, it is relatively easy to have a local version of these docs (if you wish) on your own computer by following the methods below:

For getting a local version of docs on your VL 6.0 Standard computer
==========================================

as root in a terminal:

1) mkdir /usr/doc/VLHelpCenter
2) cd /usr/doc/VLHelpCenter
3) wget -r -np -nH --cut-dirs=2 http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/docs/vl60/
4) exit
5) cd ~

then as your normal login in xfce create an icon link on the desktop:

1) right click on any desktop icon
2) choose "Desktop, Create Launcher"
3) give the launcher a name, e.g. Docs
4) the command will be "opera file:///usr/doc/VLHelpCenter/index.html"
(substitute "opera" for your preferred browser)

For getting a local version of docs on your VL 6.0 Light B2 computer
=========================================

as root in a terminal:

1) rm -r /usr/doc/VLHelpCenter/*
2) cd /usr/doc/VLHelpCenter
3) wget -r -np -nH --cut-dirs=2 http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/docs/vl60/
4) exit
5) cd ~

the already existing desktop icon will now point to the VL6.0 docs and the VL5.9 docs will have been deleted.

I realize not that many people actually read documentation, being as VL is so easy to use these days ;-) , but enjoy nonetheless...

Hi, Larry,

I started reading through some of the docs and, from what I've seen so far it looks like you've done a fantastic job.  Thanks for you hard work.

One really minor quibble:  You gave the minimum hardware resolutions as 800x600 or 1024x768 depending on version.  I think Vector Linux is very netbook friendly.  Most any version works at 800x480 (Deluxe definitely included) or 1024x600.  I think I'd use those as minimums, which are lower than 800x600 and 1024x768.

Just my .02.... and it should be taken as it is meant:  a minor point on what, IMHO, is an outstanding job on your part.

All the best,
Cait

Thank you so much for these updated docs. I really appreciate your work and am happy to have a place on my computer to learn some of the things I don't yet understand.

Excellent! I'm updating the "Light" section and putting it into next ISO.

Excellent work Larry.

I might suggest you add one more entry to the troubleshooting section.

You installed it via the GUI installer and X fails to start.
have then run the fonts scripts in /var/log/scripts

When I try to launch it I get the error message:

You tried to access the address file://localhost/usr/doc/VLHelpCenter/index.html, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelt and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

When I loaded Vl6.0 I didn't format my home directory.  Here is what I get when following instriuctions (I think I followed them, except since I already had a VLHelpCenter I renamed it VLHelpCenter-old before following instructions)

However, when I click on the new Icon I created, I get instructions on how to install and use Vector Linux 4.0.

Here is the information:

John : the methods I outlined above work perfectly here. You definitely must have made a mistake with one or other of the commands. Remove the bad docs with "rm -r /usr/doc/VLHelpCenter" and start again.

Either that or your icon is pointing to the wrong place.

Being as you are Welsh and I am Canadian yes, the correct spelling is centre! And the fact that VL was initially a Canadian distro it should be Centre. However, all past versions of VL had the docs in a directory labelled ...Center, so I kept it that way for consistency.

cheers...Larry

Thanks lagagnon.  Works great! (Actually, the original Vector-Docs icon now points to "Welcome to VectorLinux 6.0")
