Title: TLZ mime type icon(s)
Post by: blurymind on November 18, 2006, 08:25:58 am
I noticed that vec 5.8 doesnt have an icon for the tlz packages,which is really a pitty.

I think that its rellatively easy to create one or more icons for this mime type,if you use another set for a base... But it would be also nice if we had one special icon that is pretty different and stands out from the other package icons.

Here is my idea of how the Tlz icon should look like:

-It should have a colorful scheme,such as the tukaani's logo. Think tropical,colorful..
-Should be glossy and  cube-ish, (like a box)
-We can use other icon sets for base.

I e-mailed a link to this thread to Lahrzu, the genius behind getting the tlz archives into his own distro and into ours. I'm curious to get his thoughts on this. ;-)

Cheers,
John

coconut tlz icon WIP (work in progress)
(the two coconuts are on sepparate layers,so they can be used over other icons)

Dont forget: Everything is on a sepparate layer,so it can be easily used/removed/edited.

(I uploaded a xcf file at the artwork repository)

Excuse me for being a skeptic, but why is it a pity?

the default packaging standart mime type... has no icons? It's not a pity,its a gap in the design department. IT should have an icon,atlest for ease of the user to recognise it faster among a pile of other files. :-\

I made the coconut icon from scratch. It took me 2 hours. My idea of the coconut is that its hard to break+it suits the tukaani  :P

well,if some of these icons are picked up,I am willing to make different size versions specially for thunar. ;)

hey guys. I added more detail to the texture of the coconut+more hair.
(updated the xcf file at the art repo)

I am open to any more suggestions to make it look better. =)

I would say to add the half coconut to the first icon on this page.
I think that would look the best

Maybe a combination of the first and second attempt. I'll explain...

The flaps on the box should be open (like in the second attempt) and maybe inside the box, the little text that says .tlz
Or have the little text box right above the contents of the box (second attempt)

blurymind,
yes thats it,   for me anyway.
Larhzu was in irc earlier and said he didnt care much for the rainbow behind the tlz, and that he wanted something that showed the compression more.
said the box was more representative of a package, so I said maybe you could somehow show the box as being sqeeezed, kinda like zip uses the clamp or something.

First, thanks blurymind for these icons; they're great!

I'm using KDE, and I just right-click a tlz file, select properties, general tab, and click the edit file type button.  I'm not sure how you would do in something else (I think you use xfce).  ???

Come to think of it, I may have added a new mime type for tlz in KDE Control Centre > KDE Components >File Association ... sorry, it's been a while since I set it up.

well, how does one associate icons with mimetypes in xfce4? Does anybody know at all?

really minor question here...but why are we going with the cconut thing for the icon again?

lol... it represents a hard to break vesel that has something sweet inside...and its less predictable and dull. You are all thinking in the box,while you should be thinking out of it like me,and stop imitating all the common things.  ;)

anyways,i thought it's hopeless,so i gave up on the icon thing. I think that nobody is concerned about tlz icons for vec 6 and you will all will be probably stuck with a blank sheet icon for that.  ;D

thanks,but it seems most people wanna stick to the box thingy.
well, i made box combo icons. Its pretty easy to take some other tar icon and just put "tlz" sign in front.
So devs,if you wanna keep it to the standarts , why dont you at least make an icon fro tlz yourselves and include it. The blank sheet icon for vec's official packaging standart is just screaming "unpolished distro" to the users

the tlz memtype icon is setup and being used in 5.9
if you want to fix it in your 5.8 you need to add this:
Code: [Select]
  <mime-type type="application/x-compressed-tlz">
    <comment>tar archive (lzma-compressed)</comment>
    <comment xml:lang="bg">Архив, формат tar, компресиран с lzma</comment>

    <comment xml:lang="zh_TW">tar 保存檔 (lzma 格式壓縮)</comment>
    <glob pattern="*.tar.lzma"/>
    <glob pattern="*.tlz"/>
  </mime-type>
to the /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml
then you need to run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime"
finally you need to have an icon called application-x-compressed-tlz.png in the mimetypes folder of the icon set you are using.
I think /usr/share/icons/Vista-Inspirate_1.0 was the default on 5.8

You must not have tried a 5.9xx for a while Blurry.  :)
Here's the icon (in the largest size) that's currently the default for .tlz

btw,if you want me to, i can better the icon (remove the noise and pixelisation), but only if you are going to use it  :)

here's a quick try:

(needs a bit of cleaning)

and a futuristic take (just a doodle):
(http://xs122.xs.to/xs122/07486/tlzuy.png)

for best quality,i can remake the icon in svg format.
