bios update [solved]
« on: July 02, 2009, 07:33:31 pm »

I have an old laptop and the bios only supports booting from hd floppy and cd.  I want to be able to boot from the usb since my flash drive is larger than my hd however I cannot find any support from the manufacturer for this computer.  I have tried searching through google and yahoo, but no luck there.  It's a Tangent model #979 with phoenix bios if anyone knows of a site that provides updates please let me know

Does not look like anything is out there.

Not even a whole lot of information about it

You should be able to point to the flash drive via LILO. Flash support wouldn't be dependent upon LILO, but rather the system itself.

If you can boot from a floppy, try Smart Boot Manager: http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/about.html

Don't know if it will be able to boot your USB device, but I have successfully used it on many systems to force CD boot.

It turns out vlinstaller does support the usb install and boot as long as your not installing from an iso on that drive, forgot that I had to do that because of questionable performance from the cdrom

I believe you can use any VL installation cd to boot to HD or USB. Boot from the cd and when the screen comes up that says "Press enter to begin the installation of <vl version>" or something like that, type at the prompt: "linux root /dev/sda1 ro" without the quotes and where /dev/sda1 is the path to your usb device.
