HAL won't reckognise my CDROM/DVD

Hi all vectorians.

I upgraded the backbone of my workstation just a few days ago.

The new set-up: AsRock M3A780GXH/128M (integrated Radeon graphics), Phenom II X3 processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM. This one should be flying - and it does. ONLY one thing bothers me, inserting CDs and DVDs does not bring up the 'What action to take' screen. Connecting a USB-stick, the SD card form my camera or my wife's iPod, the PC will instantly ask, what to do with this 'new' media.

I have tried to 'register' the cdrom through VASM, and it asks me (very politely) 'Excuse me, do you have a CDROM?' - Oh yes, I installed from the CDROM. Bu I had no luck.

Any suggestions ?

Sorry you are having troubles.  I have a couple questions.

Does this mean you installed VL via a cd? If cd then it can be detected and used and it is not a hardware issue, most likely?

During set up up a choice is given between vl-hot and hal.  If you selected vl-hot cd-roms and dvd's will not appear and you have to use the mount-devices icon on the panel to mount them.

Another way to tell if you are using VL-Hot to mount is that both a device icon and an unmount icon will appear when you plug in a usb drive.  With Hal only one icon appears.

I don't know if I have HAL or not, but on my machine, at the bottom of the screen, right next to the battery icon, is a silver rectangle icon.  I click on that to mount and unmount my cdroms.  My machine does not ask anything when I put in a CDrom.

Thanks for quick response.

I should have mentioned that I am running VL 5.9 SOHO with KDE desktop.

I did install from a CD, and in KInfoCenter, the CDROM Information is not empty.

During install I specifically chose HAL, because I wanted the system to auto mount CDs.
HAL is running 4 processes, and pen drives shows as one icon only on the desktop (no unmount icon)

OK, so much for the easy solution.

Can you use the mount-device icon (described by sledgehammer) to mount a cd/dvd?
If so, the problem is most likely with Hal for some reason.

Unfortunately, I am not an expert in kde.  XFCE, has a "Removable, Drives and Media" application in the settings menu, I don't know if KDE has anything like that.

I'm probably going to bow out, in favor someone a little more versed in your flavor of vector.

However, a simple thing to try would be to go to vasmCC -> Hardware --> Mounter and reselect HAL as your mounter of choice.
