Zoiper, Skype, etc (SOLVED)
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:27:12 pm »

I am lazy.  The phone is in the other room.  I need to make a call but don't want to get out of my chair.  Any thoughts?  I tried Skype a year or two ago and had all kinds of problems and finally quit.  I haven't tried Skype since upgrading to VL 6.0 but notice it still doesn't offer a slackware download version.  I just looked around a bit on other sites for a slackware version of Skype but so far no luck. See nothing in the repositories. I have heard good things about Zoiper but have never tried it.  Perhaps there is something else out there?

Any thoughts or recommendations (other than to get off my duff)?

John

You can download a .tlz for skype here.  It works just as well on 6.0 as it did on 5.9.

You can also try Gizmo. (Though I personally prefer skype)
I have some screencasts here.

Hadn't heard of Zoiper I'll have to check it out. Thanks for dropping the name.  :)

Thanks stretchedthin,

I made a trip to Wally World and bought a $29 Logitech ClearChat PC headset with microphone, downloaded Skype from the site you forwarded, installed it, and it works perfectly.  Have been calling people all evening.  Even got a Skype number.  Now, so I don't have to change everything, if I can just figure out how to forward calls from my home number to my new Skype number (it has a different area code) . . . . .  or, better yet, get Skype to use my regular phone numbers. . . . . Perhaps someday I can read up on that possibility.  Meanwhile, its great just as it is.

I was delighted to see the following in the Call Transfer section of the Skype webpage: "Note: this feature is not available in the latest version of Skype for Windows."
