now what about the permission denied for the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.   is there away around it.  im in root when i try to get to it. 

Bigpaws is the best one to help you with your video problems but I think I can help with the question you have here.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log is a text file in your system directory.  It is where x makes a log of any errors that may occor, more or less. To the command line it is just an address.  You also need something in front of it to tell it what you want to do with that address.
example
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(cat is a utility that outputs the contents of a text file...see 'man cat' in the terminal for more.)

another example would be
nano /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(nano is a command line editor.  Outputs like cat, but can make changes to text files as well as scroll through etc.  see 'man nano' in terminal.)
You can also call graphical utilities like medit the same way, just try...
medit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

OK, you will need to copy to a flash drive as Xorg.0.log is a lot of typing.

the

That you probably figured out already.  The only trick is that your pendrive may not be called pendrive, it may not even show up in the /mnt/ directory in my experience it may show up under /media/.

Use the cd command to change the directory to /mnt/
type
ls (this will list the contents of /mnt)
plug in your usb drive
type
ls (check and see if your usb drive showed up and what it's name is)

didn't see anything.
do the same with the /media directory.

When you see your usb drive show up, then use that directory and name.
example
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log >> /mnt/LEXAR/xorg.txt
or
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log >> /media/disk/xorg.txt
or
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log >> /media/pendrive/xorg.txt

no it didnt seem rushed but it was very informative and thank you.  i used vi to get into the file and there is 909 lines to the read out.  i tried the cd /mnt and the /media and nothing new came up when i pluged in the flash drive and typed ls.  i tried two pen drives and a external hard drive that i used with 5.8 and none of them showed up.  ill keep on trying.  i even tried to put a blank cd in and burn it to that.  most likly did it wrong but at least i tried.

In all likely hood the devices (usb keys) are /dev/sdb or something to that effect.

Plug in a usb key and type dmesg. Alot of text will go by you only need to see the
last lines which should make a reference to the position of the usb key.

If you can find that reference the you can mount the usb key. Which means make the
device available to by used.

If the device name reference is /dev/sdb you could use this command.

as root in a terminal:

mount /dev/sdb /mnt/hd

Then you should be able to use the device.

The next command to get the log to it is:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log >> /mnt/hd/log.txt

The .txt is not really needed unless you want to
read the file in Windows.

To explain these

cat is short for concatenate. You can use the command to parse
text or to append to a file. If you use > that would add the test to
the end of the file you were writing to.

>> means to overwrite the file you are writing to.

You are jumping in with both feet. It can be difficult but when you
can run in Cli you will find more power than GUI.

Vi can be a real animal to learn, I use Vi as my editor and have not
mastered it. Easier text editors (if you want one) would be nano, pico
and mc (short for midnight commander, a powerful tool to use).

I do hope this helps explain a little better.

it did explain things better and i got the pen drive to work.  i was using hd as a name and forgot when i plugged in the drive befor that it always came up sdb1 till you said that.  i still wouldn't have got it to work because i would have never thought of the /dev/.  i did try and use nano and mc to figure things out but until recently i didn't know i had to put something in front of the thing i wanted to open  like nano or cat.

ok  like i said i got it to right to the drive but when i opened it it was all lumped up in the text file.  i really don't think you want it that way.  at the moment im trying to write it to the drive in nano instead of cat but its been 3 min and its still writing.  don't think that's going to cut it.  ill try other forms and see if i can get it to look better.

well here is the X11 file.  hope it helps you help me.  its 909 lines long.  if i knew it wouldn't have looked like this when i pasted it i would have done it yesterday.  in the txt file it was end to end and it gave me a headache to try and reed it.

In a console su to root and then type:

vasm

Try setting up the video card using Vesa and 16 bit color. That may get you
a working setup we can go from there.

still nothing.  i changed the bit rate and tried diffrent screen rezs.  i used startx and startx -- -nolisten tcp.

keep the ideas comming Bigpaws.

just an idea, would there be something in the shutdown readout.  i really cant read it because the screen turns to this weird setting when it comes out of what I'm calling sleep mode.  its almost looking at a negative of a picture with a lot of colors.

ok  took a break from it and now im playing with it again.  i tried changing setting again and now im not going to a black screen.  it starts to load and then goes blank.  it comes right back with readouts and tells me

fatal server error:
no screen found

waiting for X server to begin connections
giving up.
xinit: connection reset by peer (errno104): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error
then it goes to root and waits for a command. 

there is allot more on the screen but this is the last few lines. what is the command to write that to my pen drive.

went into vasm again and used the FBDEV default in Xserver and got a screen up.  its worked till i changed things and it wont start again and i get the same error screen. i decided to reinstall.  in the gui installer i get veclinux.tlz failed to install then X11.  i use the other installer it works but i cant add my users and i keep getting catching font failed during start up but i can get into the screen using the FBDEV default.  not going to touch it cause once i do it it wont start again and the only way i know to get it to is to reinstall.
