I dont think they will until they produce their own OS

I would have thought they would expand the android platform to use in netbooks and stuff, but looks like they want a new thing from the ground up.

So long as they dont make another *buntu I guess.

Their new OS will get a LOT of attention just because of the "Google" name!

That they're working with TI and Freescale to have it run on ARM processors means new devices and apps in the realm between microcontrollers and general processors.   

I'd bet they will have a fairly seemless merger of Android w/ Chrome OS (COS?   Back to the future (DOS-1)

They can't merge android w/ chrome.
Android is strictly mobile platform good for pda/phones but somewhat limited for netbooks I would imagine.

I doubt the skype thing will ever come to life. At least not on the tmousa android devices, but it should be interesting.

Have you looked at Andriod at all ?   I peeked under the hood just a bit to see some *nix resemblance, but got bored because there are already enough Texas Hold'em games already. HAHA

ohh yeah... Ive seen android.

I plan on my spare time to learn some java so i can write something for it (of course this might not happen )
I got full root access on my G1 with android 1.5
Lots of useful tools including ssh and wifi tethering apps.

Lots of fun stuff.

I was wondering, being Google Chrome OS aimed to netbooks and oriented to internet applications. You think it will be also a good OS to work locally?

Doubtful. What Google plans on doing is using the OS to connect to the Internet. The applications will all be on-line within the Google Cloud. Very similar to the old "dumb terminals". Honestly, I don't see this going very far.

Yeah.. Looks like it'll be just a local interface for web apps, which means they will probably limit the hardware's capabilities at a local level up to some point, you know to keep you in the google cloud.

I can already see it featuring something like "Google Office" as front-end to their "docs".

I grabbed the link Nightflier posted at thread top, emailed it to about a dozen of my fellow Windows developers, many dedicated MS fans (who secretly *nix in darkened closets . All of them have > 15 years continuous experience, some going back as far as DOS with GW-Basic, and CPM.

To a person, their responses to Goggle's action can be summed up by one of the most Evanglistic MS developers I know:

" They are going to kill Microsoft pretty quickly. "

What you might not be considering is that the bandwidth of the 'net is going to continue to increase to the point that you won't know (or care maybe) if the apps and data are on a local drive or in a cloud. The other *big* factor will be what I call "tollware" ... you don't buy an OS or apps - you just get the pieces you need. One time, small fee, or continuous very small fee.  The model is moving from Microsoft's "Money Machine" to the cell-phone plan.

I am not a Microsoft basher - I owe them essentially *two* full careers - and I like all the OSes (well, ok except OS2 ...
but I think we are witnessing the start of a serious assault on MS.

In a way I think those a very valid points.

This is what they did with android. They gave it a linux kernel (somewhat limited) and put a local interface to their gmail. Most of their other services are still freebies as of now, but we have yet to see what happens next.

I still think it's good... anything to give M$ some competition.
