hi! i'm new to this, and i'm sooo confused X.x

i hadn't planned on getting involved in any messageboards, but, here i am~

my problem... is that i can't get into the GUI.

when i installed VL, i ended up with 3 boot options:

linux
linux-tui
linux-gui

i figured that the linux-gui option had a gui, but they're all just text... what do i do?~

Which VectorLinux are you trying to install ?
What type of computer system are you trying to install VL on?
Also, are you installing VL on a clean Hard drive or is there another OS on it ?

light VL [because i couldn't burn the standered because Roxio said my CD was too small for the ISO~]
Dell Lattitude C510/C610 - 1Ghrz PIII-M proccessor, 256 Mb RAM
a fresh-formatted 6GB harddrive. [formatted with fdisk in the installer]

Here's my best guess. A bad burn on the VL lite cd. Try reburning the iso at a slower speed, like maybe 8x. Also make sure that the burn process is Burn CD Image, not, burn iso. Let us know.

Do you see any error messages when trying to boot using "tui"?

If the only error is with X configuration, it should be possible to fix it. First thing to do is to log in as root and run "vxconfig". After that run "startx" to test your settings. It may take you a few tries to find a working solution.

and it couldn't find vxconfig... i ran vasm, then the XWINDOW setup~

it also said startx wasn't found~

My mistake, the command is "vxconf". Still, vasm should have gotten you there.

Sounds like your installation is incomplete and probably not recoverable. Problem may be either a corrupt download, or a bad burn, as flip city suggested.

I'd recommend scrolling down to the command line option, but either way is fine.

If the iso file is okay, burn again, but look for a "speed" option on the burn page of Roxio. It is usually a drop-down menu that defaults to "Max". Change it to 8 or lower.

i did the MD5checksum, and it said it was ok~

so i'll try to burn a new disk at a lower speed~

but i'm out of pennies to to buy anything~

good news~

i found a bigger CD-R, and i burned the full VL installer to it~

i'm currently installing the full version and i'm glad there's a GUI~
