I have had trouble trying to install X on my system (6.0 Light Final built on March 31, 2009).

It is a laptop (model n30n3-15, apparently sold under various brands, no brand on this one); its video card (S3 Inc. 86C380 [ProSavageDDR K4M266] ) )  should work with the savage driver.

After using the configuration tools, I just get an unresponsive black screen (xorg.conf tries to use the savage driver).

The solution I found so far it is to choose the vesa configuration (xorg.conf-vesa); video is slow.

Is there anything else that I can do to use the savage or any other accelerated driver?

The new Puppy Linux (4.2) live cd can boot on that computer and X runs with the savage driver.  So it is not a case of the driver not working on this particular card or computer.

Huh

What can I do to understand why in one case works and not in the other?

you could try the xorg.conf file from puppy and see if it will work on your Vectorlinux install.
if it does maybe you can help us get it working out of the box in VL

uelsk8s, thanks for your reply and suggestion.

the xorg.conf from puppy, activating savage, doesn't seem to work in VL.
It throws me to a black screen and hangs.

I attach the corresponding log (named
Xorg.0.log.failed.with.savage.in.VL.txt).

And I also attach the log of the sucessful Puppy session (named
Xorg.0.log.good.savage.puppy.txt).

The savage drivers seem to come from different builds:
this is teh Puppy one:
# ls -la /usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/savage_drv.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 135220 2007-11-28 20:48
/usr/X11R7/lib/xorg/modules/drive
rs/savage_drv.so

This is the savage in VL:
# ls -la /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/savage_drv.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 137780 2008-03-20 06:58
/mnt/sda1/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dr
ivers/savage_drv.so
