Sound Modules not Loading
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:24:44 pm »

After I upgraded to the new kernel 2.6.27.29 my sound it bust which I have reported under
"Kernel" section in detail with no answer yet.

It seems that the sound modules are not loaded any longer. I have to do it now
manually every time I boot, about 25 modules with modprobe. Not really an enjoyable task.

Anyone having any idea why the modules are not loaded and how to correct it.

I'm told that the alsa drivers are built into the kernel-modules package for the 2.6.27.29 kernel.

So far I've done the kernel upgrade to an install of VectorLinux that I have on VirtualBox.  I used uelsk8's tutorial here...

There everything went fine.  I just double checked the sound now to be sure. I'll try an upgrade of the real thing tomorrow morning and let you know how it goes.

I did the kernel upgrade on my toshiba laptop.  All ok here.  Tested sound on Youtube and a couple games.
I was wandering if you ran the depmod -aq 2.6.27.29 command as root to update the kernel module dependancies. That's all I can think of?
Hope you find a solution.

Yeah... every time you upgrade a kernel, you must get it's modules to go with it.
alsa drivers are built against specific kernel versions and will not work on any other version... so if yours does not work even after installing the modules that go with your kernel, the answer may be to rebuild the alsa-driver package.

You should be able to find the alsa-driver.SlackBuild in your local src dir and run it as root

Yes I did run depmod -aq 2.6.27.29.

Can't find alsa-driver.SlackBuild.

Strange so I have upgraded kernels many times and never had a sound problem
and never run depmod -aq.

To get the modules in now I run it with the "!", like today !476 to !494. That way it goes
pretty fast. Still it's almost a joke. :D

I installed now a new kernel-2.6.29.6-smp and my sound is back as it was before switching to 2.6.27.29.
No more manually loading sound modules. :D :D

Still it would be of interest if somebody could figure out why my sound got bust with 2.6.27.29.
